Alexander Rossi leads the way in Sakhir

Alexander Rossi

The final GP2 Series pre-season test session opened today at Bahrain International Circuit on a dirty track. There was one change in the drivers’ entry list compared to last week as Vittorio Ghirelli joined Trident in car 22. Pirelli provided every driver with five sets of Hard compounds and two sets of Soft compounds for the three days of testing.

Stoffel Vandoorne was the first driver to feed onto the track as soon as the lights turned green, but it was Jolyon Palmer who set the early pace. The first half of the session was pretty quiet as drivers waited for the track to get cleaner. Kimiya Sato was the first man to set a lap time inside the 1m42s with Daniel De Jong first and then Julian Leal bettering the Japanese’s time to snatch the top spot.

Wilson tops almost all others in Coyne's Honda
Justin Wilson in Dale Coyne's Honda almost beat the best time of the 2-day test.  Wilson coupled with new engineer Mike Canon looks like a winning combination
LAT Photography
Considering the cold, misty conditions that impacted the last two days of Verizon IndyCar Series testing at Barber Motorsports Park, Justin Wilson reckons that when the series goes back there in late April for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, "probably half the things we think we learned will get thrown out the window."

Nonetheless, Wilson did a solid job yesterday afternoon and was second-quickest today in the No. 19 DCR Honda at just .0038 of a second behind Team Penske front-runner Will Power.

He said that he plans to take the result with a pinch of salt, but is still pleased at how he and a whole new cast of characters at DCR - led by new engineer Michael Cannon - are getting along ahead of the season opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 30.

IndyCar grid penalties for unapproved engine swaps gone
AR1.com thinks there is another reason behind this rules change.  IndyCar wants speeds up and records broken, so manufacturers are going to have to push the limit more and engines are bound to explode more often because of it.
NBCSN IndyCar reporter Jon Beekhuis has said that the grid penalties for unapproved engine changes in the Verizon IndyCar Series will no longer be in effect.

Instead, according to Beekhuis, unapproved engine changes will result in a points penalty for the Manufacturers Championship, which is contested between engine suppliers Chevrolet and Honda.

Beekhuis revealed the news during tonights edition of the "Trackside" radio program on Indianapolis 1070 The Fan, which is hosted by fellow NBCSN reporter Kevin Lee and Indianapolis Star writer Curt Cavin.

However, Beekhuis also mentioned a caveat to that rule.

If, as a team, you show negligence to the engine lets say you put the wrong radiator shutters or something on or you blow it up [on purpose], they will put you at the back of the field, Beekhuis told Lee today at Barber Motorsports Park.

IndyCar sound vs. New F1 sound
Both are turbocharged V6 engines.  IndyCar has no clue how to play in the international arena.  If they did, how many F1 race promoters would now ditch F1 for an IndyCar race in a heartbeat given the sound of the new F1 engines.  And imagine if IndyCar had gone with screaming V10 or V12 engines as recommended years ago.  Given how strong CART was before Tony George destroyed it, and given screaming engines, it would be game, set and match at this point.

United Fiber & Data gets it
For Men, being the visual creatures that they are, sex sells
Last week, new IndyCar sponsor United Fiber & Data announced the UFD Grid Girls.  These 6 women will serve as the spokesmodels for James Hinchcliffes #27 UFD IndyCar for the 2014 season.  Although the exact details of their involvement for UFD and at each race havent been detailed, its fairly safe to assume their duties.  Having attractive women in tight clothing serving as models for a product at a race track is not a new concept.

Facing facts here, racing is still very male dominated in sport.  Men care about fast cars and hot women.  Well, if you are catering to the audience at hand, beautiful women are the way to go.  There's a reason there are a lot of ladies in bikinis straddling low-riders on the cover of hot rod magazines.  The two things just go together, right or wrong.  Men like looking at pretty things.  Period.

New IndyCar tire rules, chassis upgrades announced
Verizon IndyCar Series teams will now have the ability to receive credit for new Firestone tires left over from the race event allotment for each entry.

The new tire allotment regulations will vary depending on the type of event. Here’s how they break down:

For street course races, one set of new primary (black) tires remaining can be carried over to a future street race and added to the entry’s allotment.
Additionally, any remaining new tires from an entry’s event allotment may be added to the entry’s testing allotment. Remaining new sets of alternate (red) tires will be returned to the entrant as primary tires (each entry is permitted 54 sets of primary or wet tires for their 18 days of testing through the end of the season and carryover tires must be the correct spec for the circuit).

Power Paces Final Day of Verizon IndyCar Series Open Test at Barber
Will Power
For the second consecutive day, Will Power topped the time chart as Verizon IndyCar Series wrapped up a two-day Open Test at Barber Motorsports Park.

Power, driving the Chevrolet-powered No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, recorded a lap of 1 minute, 7.0608 seconds. He posted a best lap of 1:07.6492 on March 17. Power recorded 62 laps in the session that was delayed because of cold temperature and an intermittent mist in the morning.

"Coming back to Barber, hopefully we found a happy place," said Power, who's won the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber twice in its four years. "Obviously the temperature will be a lot different, and I think that brings out imbalances in the car. It was so cold today and there was so much grip that I think it was hard to get good reads on changes.

Bernie Ecclestone signs deal to host F1 grand prix in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is set to host a Formula One grand prix in the 2015 or 2016 season after signing a deal with Bernie Ecclestone.

"We're going to Azerbaijan," the sport's ringmaster told the Daily Mail. "The people out there are talking about holding a race in 2015. That may be a bit soon – unless it's at the end of the season; that's a possibility. But 2016 is more likely."

The newspaper said the deal to host the race in Baku, capital of the oil-rich, former Soviet nation, had been facilitated by Ecclestone's friend, Flavio Briatore, the former team principal at Renault.

Russia is scheduled to stage its first grand prix in Sochi, host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics, in October, part of a growing trend away from the sport's traditional circuits in Europe. The Guardian

IMSA to Review Safety Car Procedures, On-Board Camera IDs
IMSA could be set to make changes to its safety car procedures, while also planning to implement a new on-board camera ID protocol in the wake of Saturday’s caution-filled and controversial Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

The second round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship featured a race record-tying 11 full-course caution periods, totaling more than five hours of the around-the-clock endurance classic.

It included a final yellow for a stopped DP car with 51 minutes remaining. The caution lasted 30 minutes and set up a dash to the checkered flag for the second consecutive race.

According to IMSA’s VP of Competition and Technical Regulations Scot Elkins, they were unable to alter the safety car procedure during the event itself but are exploring potential changes to the regulations to ensure increased green flag running time in the future.

IndyCar Teams can carry over tires
Verizon IndyCar Series teams will benefit from new regulations regarding Firestone tire allotment written into the 2014 series rulebook. Each entry will receive credit for new tires remaining from its race event allotment.

We thought, "What happens to all those tires that are left from an event?" INDYCAR president of competition and operations Derrick Walker said. "Firestone worked with us to get this into place."

  • After a street course event, one set of new primary tires remaining may be carried forward to a future street course event and added to the entry’s allotment.
  • Any remaining new tires from an entry’s event allotment may be added to the entry’s test allotment. Remaining new sets of alternate tires will be returned to the entrant as primary tires. Each entry is permitted a total of 54 sets of tires (primary or wet) for their 18 test days through the end of the season, and the carryover tires must be the correct specification for the circuit.
Example: An entry receives credit for its three sets of tires remaining from the March 28-30 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to carry forward one set of primary tires to the April 11-13 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and two sets for a future test day.
  • Teams may carry forward two sets of tires from the Barber Open Test to a future Open Test or a team test.
Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., which hosts the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama on April 26, is hosting spring training March 17-18. The next Open Test is April 30 on the reconfigured Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in preparation for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10. Auto Club Speedway will host an Open Test on Aug. 27 in advance of the 500-mile season finale under the lights Aug. 30.
  • With the exception of superspeedway events, entries completing five or more laps during practice Session 1 will earn an additional set of primary tires for the event.

Team Penske Cars Lead Shortened First Day of Barber Open Test
Juan Montoya locks a wheel trying hard
Juan Pablo Montoya's goals for the two-day Verizon IndyCar Series Open Test at Barber Motorsports were simple: learn, discern and apply.

The scheduled seven hours on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course were cut in half because of a chill and mist in the morning of day one, but Montoya and teammates Will Power and Helio Castroneves made the most of their combined 154 laps. The test day was especially effective for the newest member of Team Penske.

Montoya, driving the Chevrolet-powered No. 2 Verizon Team Penske car, was .0678 of a second off the front-running Power's best lap of 1 minute, 07.6492 seconds. Castroneves was third on the time chart at 1:07.7214.

Chevy drivers meet with media at Barber open test
Mike Conway
MIKE CONWAY, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET:
“So far it’s been very good.  Really enjoying working with Ed Carpenter Racing and the whole group of guys there.  I know a few of them from before that I worked with.  Still it’s good to get back together and work on a program for the season.  Preseason testing has gone well, but still need to keep working hard.  Obviously we are trying to learn as much as we can once we are allowed on track over these next two days.  That will be our final prep then really for St. Pete.  I’m looking forward to all the races ahead really.  I think we still have a little bit of time to find maybe, but we are working hard to find that and hopefully we will get that over the next two day and looking forward to the season ahead.  I got a good few races last year which I was fortunate to get and then obviously really happy to get all the races I’m getting this year with Ed Carpenter Racing. Really thankful for that and can’t wait to get going.”

BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK HAS BEEN GOOD TO YOU IN THE PAST.  TALK A LITTLE ABOUT RACING AT THE TRACK:
“I love the track as opposed to when we first came here in 2009. It’s more of a track I’m used to with the European style of tracks being quite fast flowing.  It’s good fun here.  It’s always very testing on the tires and the car. It’s always some parts of the circuit compare to other it’s a bit of a give and take sometimes with set-up.  It’s always good to get that going.  It’s a fun place to come to and I think one of the best tracks including all the facilitates and the cool museum they have here. It’s always good to be here.”

He raced successfully in many types of cars, on every type of track, and he possessed a work ethic that earned him rides based on his ability and his competitive nature. Gary will best be remembered by Indianapolis Motor Speedway fans for the manner in which he carried the Bettenhausen family's passion for the Indianapolis 500 and how he drove every lap at the limit when he was competing at IMS. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary's wife, his family, and his friends."

Austin Dillon still needs sponsorship for some races
The chosen one
Companies that want in on Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon bringing the iconic #3 back to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series still have a chance. While brands such as Dow, Cheerios and American Ethanol have stepped in to fund most of the season, there is still inventory available, RCR Chief Marketing Officer Ben Schlosser told Newsday on Friday.

"We still have a few races open toward the back half of the year, but we don't go public with exactly how many races are left," said Schlosser. Schlosser added that RCR is talking to both current sponsors and "a few interested parties" outside the current sponsorship group to fill out the schedule. Unsold races in NASCAR don't necessarily equate to problems finding sponsorship. Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. currently has almost a third of his season unsold -- because car owner Rick Hendrick has made it clear he's not discounting the price to sponsor Junior. Newsday

Human error caused final caution at Bristol
A long and bizarre day came to an unusual finish Sunday night when the caution lights were accidentally turned on from the flag stand and rain then prevented an attempt for a green-white-checkered finish. A person in the flag stand leaned on the manual override switch, turning on the caution lights on lap 499, according to Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. Six seconds after the lights were turned on, the flag man - seeing the lights on - waved the yellow flag, according to NASCAR's review of the finish. Pemberton said that the flag man can wave the caution flag without a call from series officials in the tower if they see a proper reason. The rain then arrived before the race could be restarted, giving Carl Edwards the victory.

The caution snafu did cause NASCAR to change the finishing order. NASCAR went back to when the caution lights flashed and froze the field. Pemberton said NASCAR only had to adjust three positions - placing Denny Hamlin sixth, Jeff Gordon seventh and Kasey Kahne eighth. Pemberton said NASCAR will work to make sure the incident is not repeated. Motor Racing Network

Isn't it time for someone to reward Sage Karam's talent
Sage Karam in the No. 02 Ganassi Ford
Some guy with a Twitter name of @JeffJustJeff posted the following during Saturday’s Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring sports car endurance race: "@SageKaram has thoroughly impressed me. Get that kid a full time ride."

Another guy named @DonMedia posted: “How in the name of all that is sane can @SageKaram NOT have a full time #IndyCar ride?”

I have to say that I have wondered the same thing ever since Karam put together that Firestone Indy Lights championship run last year.

Okay, so I’m not the world’s greatest authority on the matter. Neither are @JeffJustJeff and @DonMedia.
