Sebring Update UPDATE See race report on our home page.

03/21/15 Down to the wire! Nerves are high for a lot of teams right now, but the NASCAR debris yellow did not come out with only 5 minutes remaining.

I just spoke with Jordan Taylor about the Wayne Taylor Corvette DP and the difficulties today with brakes. Jordan verified that was really the main problem with the car, however, even though late in the game, they solved the problem and the car is great now. They are cautiously optimistic in the final hour but need a miracle. Wayde Alfarone reporting live from Sebring

Sebring Hour 11: Corvette DPs 1-2 with 1-hour to go
Barbosa takes over from Fittipaldi in the No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP

The 12 Hours of Sebring has 1-hour to go and Ricky Taylor has taken the Wayne Taylor Corvette DP into 2nd place behind the No. 5 Action Express Corvette and ahead of the Ganassi No. 01 Ford now driven by Scott Dixon.

Ricky Taylor is turning lap times slightly faster than Joao Barbosa trying to get their car unlapped so the France Family owned series can throw a NASCAR yellow to bunch them up for a close finish.

The No. 5 Action Express Corvette has now lapped the field with former IndyCar driver Christian Fittipaldi at the wheel ahead of Joey Hand in the Ganassi Ford and just 1-second behind him the Richard Westbrook Corvette DP.

Corvette DPs run 4th and 5th at the hands of Richard Westbrook and Dane Cameron.

Even Mercedes can't save German GP
Not enough German fans want to buy an expensive F1 ticket to watch the Mercedes parade around 1-2 to save the German GP.  The thrill of the F1 engine scream is gone and interest in the sport has plummeted.

(GMM)  Mercedes offered to help keep the German grand prix alive in 2015.

On Friday, the FIA revealed that it has removed the scheduled July 19 date from this year's calendar because Bernie Ecclestone and a German circuit "did not reach agreement".

Earlier, as F1 supremo Ecclestone discussed the crisis with the financially embattled Nurburgring as well as the potential substitute Hockenheim, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said: "As far as we are able to, we will try to help.

"It is an important grand prix for us."

On Sunday, the British newspaper The Observer said Mercedes was willing not only to pay half of the potential loss in 2015, but also promote the race.

Twelve Hours of Sebring Saturday Notebook
Hoping for a better result than they had in the Rolex 24 At Daytona season opener, where they were the first car to retire after completing just 42 laps due to transmission woes, the Claro/TracFone DeltaWing team began the weekend with high hopes. The team qualified in the top 10 for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida and was feeling confident before a broken left rear suspension led to an early exit.

Drivers Katherine Legge, Memo Rojas and Andy Meyrick were encouraged by the car’s performance as the weekend progressed, as the coupe came to grips with Sebring’s 3.74 miles of bumpy concrete and asphalt. Rojas started the race and experienced throttle issues on the pace lap, which led to a quick stop in the pit box to adjust the electronics. Following another stop early in the race, Rojas rejoined the fray 10 laps down and began to come back through the field. Handing over to Legge at the two-hour mark, the team had gained two of those laps back before incurring the suspension damage on lap 60.

Sebring Hour 10: Fittipaldi leads in the No. 5 Corvette
The No. 5 Corvette pits and Fittipaldi takes over from Bourdais

The 12 Hours of Sebring has hit the 10-hour mark. The sun has set on Sebring, and the atmosphere has become electric! The sights are unnatural and beautiful, the smell of fuel and brakes. Yet, as you look around, there are signs that the end of the race draws near. Some teams are fighting harder than ever to chase the win, for others, the fight is over.

The No. 5 Action Express Corvette has now lapped the field with former IndyCar driver Christian Fittipaldi at the wheel ahead of Joey Hand in the Ganassi Ford and just 1-second behind him the Richard Westbrook Corvette DP.

Corvette DPs run 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Sebring Hour 8: Bourdais stretching Pruett by 3-secs per lap
The No. 5 Corvette, now at the hands of Sebastien Bourdais has stretched the lead to over 1 minute

We have reached the 2/3rds point of the 12 Hours of Sebring and IndyCar driver Sebastien Bourdais is taking former NASCAR driver and now sports car ace Scott Pruett to school, driving 3 seconds per lap faster than the Ganassi Ford driver. The level of talent difference between the IndyCar drivers and sports car drivers is striking.

If not for caution flags the No. 5 Action Express Corvette would have lapped the field.  With no recent caution flags Bourdais has now stretched the lead to over 1 minute as he buries Scott Pruett.

Corvette DPs run 3rd, 4th and 5th at the hands of Michael Valiante, Jordon Taylor and Max Papis.

Sebring Hour 7: No 5 Corvette back in front
The No. 5 Corvette is back in front

The Ford was no match for the Corvette and the No. 5 Action Express car, now with Joao Barbosa at the wheel has taken the lead over the Ganassi Ford No. 01 with Scott Pruett at the wheel as the 12 Hour grind has reached the 7-hour mark.

There's a lot of pit action at this time. It appeared Max Angelelli was going to take over the Wayne Taylor Corvette from Jordan Taylor, but, last minute Max took off his helmet, Jordan made the stop, took on fuel and tires but opted to stay in the car!  Meanwhile the #38 car of Performance Tech Motorsports came in for tires and fuel as well. Strategies may soon become more apparent as we approach the final 4 hours of this 12 hour endurance race.

Sebring 12 Hours: IndyCar ace Scott Dixon takes lead at halfway mark
Another IndyCar driver, Scott Dixon, is showing the sports car guys how it's done

Scott Dixon leads overall in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley-Ford from Joao Barbosa in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP.  Once again we're under caution, good news for some teams that have been struggling early on with problems. At one point the number 10 car of Wayne Taylor Racing was down 2 laps after a 4+ minute pit stop where they changed front brake rotors. This yellow has helped them tremendously by bringing them 1 lap closer to the lead lap.

At this point the fast car/driver in 2nd place overall after this caution is Barbosa in the number 5 Action Racing Corvette. Things could change drastically after this shakes out because the Ford appears no match for the Chevys!

Other class leaders at the six-hour mark included Tom Kimber-Smith (No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports, PC), Patrick Pilet (No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR, GTLM) and Cooper MacNeil (No. 22 Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT America, GTD).Stay tuned for more live action from Sebring.

Bourdais' teammate Fittipaldi has now taken over the #5 and is in the lead

The No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP, now in the hands of Christian Fittipaldi is back in the lead of the 61st running of the 12 Hours of Sebring. The no. 90 Corvette DP that led because of pitstops at the 4-hour mark is running 2nd.

The no. 52 Oreca leads in the PC class and runs 5th overall.

The Porsche 911 RSR now in the hands of Bryan Sellers leads GTLM and runs 13th overall while the No. 007 Aston Martin led GTD but not for long because soon thereafter they were passed by the No. 23 Porsche 911GT.  Wayde Alfarone reporting live from Sebring

Q&A with Mario Andretti
Mario Andretti
Mario Andretti
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - The legend of world champion pro racecar driver Mario Andretti endures two decades after his retirement, and that was apparent here Friday afternoon, March 20.

For nearly two hours Andretti, 75, visited with fans and signed autographs at Sun Valley Tire & Auto Service, 8337 E. Highway 69, as part of the "Salute to Heroes" event, which will donate its proceeds to programs and services for military veterans through the U.S. Veterans Initiative.

The two-day gathering concludes today, March 21, with activities scheduled at 1 and 6 p.m. at Prescott Valley Event Center.

On Friday, a Firestone Indy car, a Bigfoot monster truck, a local fire truck and an Air Force F-16 cockpit simulator were scheduled to make appearances at Sun Valley Tire, and yet Andretti, an American icon, was the main attraction.

By late morning, some 50 to 100 people stood in a single-file line on a bright-and-sunny first day of spring for the chance to get their photo taken with Andretti, shake his hand and receive an autograph.

Sebring Hour 3: Bourdais pulls away at will
IndyCar driver Sebastien Bourdais pulls away by 1 second per lap after every caution

For Action Express Racing's Sebastien Bourdais it's like taking candy from a baby.  The IndyCar driver continues to lead with three hours now in the books at the 63rd Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, following yet another caution flag.

Cautions tighten up the field and each time Bourdais extends his lead in the No. 5 Corvette DP by around 1-second per lap, clearly showing that sportscar drivers are no match for the talent of an IndyCar ace.  As long as the car survives the grind, last year's winners won't be beat.

The No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Corvette DP of Michael Valiante and the David Heinemeier Hansson-driven No. 1 Tequila Patron ESM HPD ARX-03b maintaining second and third, respectively.

Sebastien Bourdais, in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP, leads the 63rd Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring at the two-hour mark, with the race now under its second full-course caution.

Ozz Negri (co-driving with John Pew and Justin Wilson) was trying to pass Bryan Sellers in the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR going through Turn 14, Negri clipped the curb on entry and spun into the tire barriers, with the car incurring significant left side damage and probably done for the day.  Negri told AR1 that he is fine.

Meanwhile, the No. 57 Krohn Racing Ligier JS P2 Judd and No. 16 BAR1 Motorsports Oreca FLM09 collided on pit lane. The No. 16 car was issued a drive-through penalty for a pit traffic violation, per IMSA.

AR1's IndyCar Notes
The Verizon IndyCar Series teams had their hands full earlier this week at Barber Motorsports Park
The two test days earlier this week for IndyCar Spring Training at Barber Motorsports Park, were some of the more intense testing days we remember. Many of the teams, both big and small, clearly had their hands full with the new body kits, some of the teams were even taking time to figure out how exactly to assemble their cars. And when we say, how to assemble we don't mean whether to run more or less wing, more or less camber, etc., we actually mean how to assemble the car.

Surely, the teams will figure it out soon enough. But there was more head-scratching in the Barber garage area than we've seen in previous seasons.

Longtime tire supplier Firestone is also likely to have its hands full early on. Remember, we reported Monday that Firestone essentially brought the same tire to the Barber test as they ran last season largely to provide them a baseline with what exact impact the kits will have on the tires. And a Firestone engineer we spoke with told us the numbers were "way off." We took that to mean that the impact of the aero kits on tire performance was greater certainly than before, but possibly more than expected.

New Audi R18 e-tron quattro even more efficient
Will Toyota again eat Audi's lunch in 2015, or will the R18 e-tron Quattro be their redemption?

Audi is starting the 2015 season with a thoroughly revised R18 e-tron quattro. In the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and in the Le Mans 24 Hours as the season's pinnacle event, Audi is going to compete with a hybrid sports car in the 4-megajoule class.

A twofold quantity of hybrid energy, fundamentally revised aerodynamics, the next step in lightweight design and a lot of detailed work characterize the fifth generation of the Audi R18. "The possibilities of the revolutionary regulations that have been in effect for LMP sports cars since 2014 are far from having been fully used. The rules harbor so much potential that there is room for future developments," says Jorg Zander, Audi Sport's new Head of Engineering.

Sprint Cup purses down as NASCAR shifts money to XFINITY, Trucks
Sprint Cup Series teams appear to be racing for just a little bit less money in 2015 as NASCAR has quietly increased the purses for its two national developmental series while Sprint Cup purses have dropped by a tick this year. NASCAR Chairman Brian France said last year that NASCAR would consider giving Xfinity (formerly Nationwide) Series and Camping World Truck Series teams a bigger portion of the new television deal that went into effect this year. That is what NASCAR has done, although it won't say by how much. It never announced the change, but it did confirm to ESPN.com that that was the case when asked about the change in the purses after the first four races.

FIA confirms F2 revival as official F1 feeder category
The FIA has confirmed its plans to revive the Formula 2 category in an effort to establish it as the primary feeder category for the Formula 1 World Championship.

During a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) it was determined that Formula 2 would be re-introduced to bridge the gap between F1 and F3, with the intention of establishing it as the most direct route on the way to Formula 1.

Plans for the Formula 2 series came to light when it was included in the FIA's new superlicense 'points' guidelines in January and though the WMSC doesn't give much away in terms of regulations of structure, it has invited promoters to begin submitting tenders.
