Busch bolts to victory in Fontana  Those who know the history of the Royal Purple 300 also know that Kyle Busch’s victory Saturday at Auto Club Speedway was all but a foregone conclusion.

Busch finished 0.834 seconds ahead of Nationwide Series leader Sam Hornish Jr. to claim his sixth win at the two-mile track and the ninth straight for Joe Gibbs Racing, extending the record for consecutive victories for a Nationwide car owner at a single speedway.

With his third trip to Victory Lane in five starts this season, Busch also extended his own record for career wins in the series, pushing that number to 54. The six wins at a single track ties his personal best; Busch also has six NNS victories at Charlotte. More ...

Hawksworth wins after Munoz and Chaves crash
Indy Lights winner Jack Hawksworth gets his trophy from Firestone's Joe Barbieri
Jack Hawksworth, who earned the 2012 Star Mazda Championship, won in his Firestone Indy Lights debut for Schmidt Peterson with Curb-Agajanian Motorsports after leaders Carlos Munoz and Gabby Chaves tangled while battling for the lead.

Munoz, the Sunoco Pole Award recipient in the No. 26 Dialy-Ser-Andretti Autosport car, was battling Chaves in the No. 7 Schmidt Peterson with Curb-Agajanian car entering Turn 1 of Lap 11 when they made contact. Hawksworth made his way around the scene to take the lead, which he held the remainder of the 45-lap race.

Lorenzo Leads The Way as Final Pre-Season Test Begins at Jerez  Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo kicked off day one of three of the final pre-season test of 2013 at the front, leading the MotoGP field by over a second in the time sheets. Following a successful team launch yesterday, today’s first day of action was a disappointing affair for the MotoGP riders with black clouds, heavy rains and a waterlogged track hampering testing efforts. Despite the adverse weather Lorenzo managed to achieve 33 laps whilst working on the wet set up of his YZR-M1, achieving a competitive set up fairly quickly.

Valentino Rossi’s first day in the official 2013 colors of the Factory team were similar to Lorenzo’s, the Italian working on his wet set up. Rossi was able to find a good pace but ended the session needing to reduce rear tire wear in the wet to last race distance at a fats pace. More ...

Brabham dominates Pro Mazda race in St. Pete
Brabham (C) a happy winner on the Podium
Third-generation racer Matthew Brabham produced an impressive performance to score a clear victory in this afternoon’s Allied Building Products Grand Prix of  St. Petersburg, Round 3 of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.

Brabham, 19, who was born in Boca Raton, Fla., and raised in Surfers Paradise, Australia, had set the pace throughout practice with the #83 Team Andretti Autosport entry but qualified only eighth after the gear shift lever broke off in his hand midway through the 30-minute qualifying session. Undeterred, Brabham, who won last year’s Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, earning a MAZDASPEED scholarship to graduate to Pro Mazda this season, was on the move almost as soon as the green flag waved. He leapt to sixth at the start, only for his progress to be delayed almost immediately by a full-course caution following a first-corner incident which eliminated Colombian Juan Piedrahita (JDC MotorSports). Saturday morning in St. Pete  It is rather overcast this morning in St. Pete with rain a slight (30%) possibility. Humidity is up as well. Things to watch for today include whether the Chevy teams will continue to dominate, if Simona de Silvestro can continue to show incredible speed and prove she is the best female driver we have seen to date, if James Jakes can continue to beat his teammate Graham Rahal, and what effect the change in weather will have on lap times. Ana Beatriz and Josef Newgarden just got together on the first outlap. More later......

NASCAR Bristol TV rating  UPDATE Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Food City 500 from Bristol Motor Speedway earned a 4.6 final rating and 7.5 million viewers, up 5% in ratings and 3% in viewership from last year (4.4, 7.3M), and up 7% and 4%, respectively, from 2011 (4.3, 7.2M). The race earned at least a 5.0 rating each year from 2001 to 2008, peaking with a 6.3 in 2005. The Bristol race also ranks as the first Sprint Cup telecast since the Daytona 500 to have an increase in ratings. Leimer lights up Malaysia GP2 feature race
James Calado (ART Grand Prix ), Fabio Leimer (Racing Engineering), Stefano Coletti (Rapax)
It’s been a long time coming. After a hit and miss season in 2012, Fabio Leimer finally snatched a win for Racing Engineering in this morning’s feature race at Sepang International Circuit. The Swiss came out on top after race long pressure from poleman Stefano Coletti.

As soon as the lights went out, Leimer made a blazing start from P4 on the grid and came to Coletti’s side on the outside of Turn 1, but the Monegasque driver retained the lead from the Swiss. Behind the battling pair, James Calado muscled his way past Felipe Nasr to take third, but the Brit ran a bit too wide shortly after, which allowed Mitch Evans who had just disposed of Nasr to take advantage of Calado’s mistake. Hamlin apologizes for Logano bump  Denny Hamlin apologized on Friday for making two mistakes involving former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate #22-Joey Logano last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. The first mistake was bumping Logano too hard on lap 349 in retaliation for the way the Penske Racing driver raced him earlier. The bump sent Logano into a spin when he was battling Jeff Gordon for the lead and ruined any chance he had of contending for the victory. The second was for attacking Logano personally after a post-race shoving match between the crews that began when Logano approached Hamlin at his car. On the first mistake, Hamlin said he was trying to send Logano a message with a tap after Logano pinched down on him too hard earlier. "I felt bad, and really if you could watch my in-car camera you could see how frustrated I was to see he had damage to his car,'' Hamlin said before the first practice at Auto Club Speedway. More ...

NASCAR Aims To Improve Southern California Presence With More Hollywood, Hispanic Fans  The Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series head to Auto Club Speedway in Southern California this weekend and the region is “crucial to NASCAR's present and future,” because even though Fontana might not be L.A., “it's as close as NASCAR gets,” according to according to Jeff Gluck of USA TODAY. NASCAR “knows this, certainly -- it has an office in Los Angeles where efforts are made daily to connect with the entertainment industry -- but the drivers and fans need to be fully on board, too.” The remaining date “cannot be allowed to fail; it's simply too important.” More ...

Klock Werks Kustom Cycles in Mitchell alleges that Bowyer failed to pay about $31,000 for customization work done on a motorcycle in late 2008 and early 2009. It's seeking the money plus 18% annual interest, along with attorney and court fees. F1 V6 engine costs a "disaster for the majority of competitors" says Purnell
Tony Purnell
In an exclusive column for Pitpass, former Jaguar Racing team principal Tony Purnell says he believes that the switch next year from F1's current 2.4 liter V8 engines to 1.6 liter V6s is "a disaster for the majority of competitors" because it will double their powertrain costs to an estimated £17m (€20m).

Purnell will be writing a series of monthly columns for Pitpass with each one focusing on a key point at the heart of his vision for building a better version of Formula One. It is fittingly entitled 'Making the good better.'

The V6 engines have faced severe criticism from F1's boss Bernie Ecclestone and Ron Walker, chairman of the Formula One Promoters Association, which represents the race organizers. Purnell's complaint should perhaps be taken even more seriously because of his background and experience with motorsport technology. More ...

Cassill to sue BK Racing  UPDATE BK Racing co-owner Ron Devine has responded to the lawsuit filed by former driver Landon Cassill, alleging that the team failed to pay him $145,000 in guaranteed 2012 base salary and an additional $60,000 for other services rendered to the team. "He had some things he wanted us to agree to that we weren't willing to do," said Devine. "One of them was (agreeing) that he was the number-one, full-time starter. We had three drivers (who) shared the rides last year and we were set to do that again. We have aspirations of putting a third car on the track (in 2013). We're trying as hard as we can to get the (No.) 73 on the track, but we're just not there yet. "We were not prepared to run three cars& and when I went to the other two drivers and said they would have to share the ride, they were fine with it. When we talked to Landon, he didn't want to do that. We were trying to work something out with all three of the drivers where they could share the (monetary) pool, no matter who was driving the car," he explained. "Landon didn't want to do that. I understand that he's young and wants to run every week, but we felt that for the size of our team, it was better for us to have a stable of three (drivers) and share the ride. Devine said the dispute over Cassill's 2012 pay was not a factor in his decision to part company for 2013. Attorney Adam Ross has been hired to represent the team, and Devine said he is crafting a response to the suit that will be filed in the near future. Godfather Motorsports More ...
