Anders Krohn tops Indy Lights session
Anders Krohn and Conor Daly set the early pace in practice for the March 27 race on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street circuit. Both competed in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear last year on the racetrack.

Krohn, driving the No. 9 Liberty Engineering Racing Special for Belardi Auto Racing, had a quick lap of 1 minute, 9.0371 seconds in the hour-long session. Daly had a best lap of 1:09.1544 in the No. 77 Mazda Road to Indy/Sam Schmidt Motorsports entry.

ANDERS KROHN (No. 9 Liberty Engineering Racing Special, first): "It is a great start with a new team and a new series - it was a lot of fun out there. I know it is only practice but it is good to see we are in the ballpark. I think we have a lot of improvement in the car -we can do much better in the turns. Both myself and the car can improve. I am glad we started so well we just need to stay at the top tomorrow during qualifying and for the race. It was fun today. A good start for everyone, that's for sure. The Firestone tires were great - the last lap I ran was my fastest - they were very consistent the whole run."

Audi test next version of R18
Audi R18 testing at Sebring
Audi has put the next stage of its R18 project to the test: The latest version of its new diesel race car, which will appear in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, was test-driven for the first time in the USA.

The "Evolution 2" Audi R18 is the result of the findings of previous test drives and wind tunnel testing, with a particular focus on improved aerodynamic efficiency and cooling of the interior of its V6 TDI engine. It clocked up its first test kilometers on a proving ground in Florida last week, as the 12 Hours of Sebring were held.

The Audi R18 made its first public testing appearance after the 12-hour race in Sebring. Since then, internet forums have been abuzz with comments and discussions concerning the new, enclosed LMP1 race car. The comments on the photos and videos of the vehicle range from "magic" to "looks like a stealth airplane" and "sounds like a jet."

California ethanol producer files for bankruptcy
The Pacific Ethanol subsidiaries that own corn-to-fuel plants have filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, the latest setback for this once-booming alternative-fuel niche.

Pacific will continue managing the plants, and its subsidiaries, Kinergy Marketing and Pacific Ag Products, are expected to continue their marketing and selling operations.

“We have worked well with our creditors to develop a plan that we believe allows us to continue operations and meet our commitments to our customers and vendors," Neil Koehler, Pacific Ethanol’s chief executive and president, said in a statement. "We are unwavering in our vision of being a leading producer and marketer of low carbon fuels in the Western United States. While the market environment for the ethanol industry has been challenging over the last several quarters, we remain confident that a restructured company will grow and prosper as the demand for low carbon fuels increases.”

FIA bans movable wings in the rain
FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting has confirmed that the newly-introduced DRS (Drag Reduction System) will now be banned during wet practice and qualifying sessions. By reducing drag along the straights when deployed, the adjustable rear-wing is predicted to increase speeds by around 10-12 kph (6-7 mph).

The decision to prohibit use of the device during rain-hit races was made prior to the start of the season, but Whiting has opted to make further changes to the regulations amid safety concerns at a meeting with key F1 personnel on Thursday.

Honda Improves Pit Lane Safety with Refueling Interlock
American Honda and its Honda Performance Development (HPD) subsidiary today unveiled a unique refueling safety interlock system designed to reduce the potential for pit fires and injuries resulting from drivers leaving their pit boxes with refueling equipment still attached in the IZOD IndyCar Series - a cause of many fires in the past.

HPD has developed a new, inter-connected system that includes a fuel-probe sensor and corresponding electronics in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and Gearbox Control Unit (GCU). The system prevents first gear from being engaged in the "paddle shift" system while the refueling hose is still attached to the car in the pit lane.

F1 tire fears subside as Sutil says two-stops possible
(GMM)  Despite all the fears of four or possibly even five-stop strategies in Melbourne, Adrian Sutil on Friday said the tire situation in Melbourne is not so bad.

F1's new official supplier Pirelli has copped a barrage of criticism for the extreme degradation seen in winter testing, but the tires did not wear so badly during the three hours of practice under cool and cloudy skies as the 2011 season finally kicked off.

"They need at least a lap to get up to temperature, but I did a long run without any problems, because there are so few fast corners," said Force India driver Adrian Sutil, according to Auto Motor und Sport.

Tacticians had travelled to Australia this week expecting at least three pitstops, and possibly four.

Fontana adjusts to one NASCAR race
For the first time since 2004, NASCAR will make only one visit to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

Some drivers said they think it's the right move. NASCAR fans have been critical of the racing at Fontana: not enough passing, not enough action, not enough excitement.

There was a time that not only did NASCAR visit Fontana and Southern California twice a year -- with the Camping World Truck Series and the West Series in addition to the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series -- but the defunct CART Series, IndyCar Series, AMA Superbikes, International Race of Champions and the Rolex Sports Car Series would make yearly stops at Auto Club Speedway.

Grand Prix is St. Petersburg's Super Bowl
Does the IndyCar St. Petersburg Grand Prix bring in a Super Bowl's worth of tourists like some folks say? We checked the numbers. It's a big deal. Folks who follow IndyCar racing will tell you that about this weekend's Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Schumacher, Vettel happy with Pirelli tires in Melbourne UPDATE
Sebastian Vettel in Australia
World champion Sebastian Vettel believes he has come to grips with one of Formula One's stickiest problems - rubber. Tires have become the talking point of the sport ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. The new Pirellis were criticized by some drivers during testing in Spain as being quick-wearing and difficult to manage.

They forecast cars would be dipping in and out of the pits more than ever and strategy in the stops might become more important than the ability to drive. Combined with new controls to move rear wings and give the cars an energy boost when needed, many felt they were being over-worked. But, at least as far as the tires are concerned, Vettel says the news is not all gloomy.

Firestone agreeing to return to IndyCar after they announced they were leaving left many people dumbfounded on what caused them to change their mind.  When in doubt, follow the money......

Randy Bernard confirmed our suspicion.  "I feel like I failed the negotiations because although they agreed to return the cost of the tires went up so much. It nearly doubled."

Australia GP: Friday Quotes

Ferrari

Fernando Alonso "Nothing new yet and what else would you expect? These two free practice sessions have not actually revealed the real relative strengths of the teams: this morning Red Bull went well and in the afternoon it was McLaren's turn, with us and Mercedes always in the mix, while Williams and Renault also seem competitive. There are so many teams who could be in with a chance of going for the win and therefore it's obvious that it will be necessary to have a good Saturday, without any mistakes if you want to start from the front row.

Today, we concentrated mainly on analyzing the behavior of the Pirelli tires, which seems a bit different here to what we saw in testing, partly because the track surface has very different characteristics. As far as strategy is concerned, we will need to be very flexible during the race, because at the moment, we know too little about the tires to be able to say with certainty on which lap it will be best to stop. From what we have seen today, maybe we can do ten laps on one set of tires, or maybe thirty! I am happy with the way the car is going: at the start there was a bit of understeer and we still are a way off from having perfect grip at the front, but it went better than I was expecting. We wanted to show that Japan was in the thoughts of all of us at Ferrari, which is why we ran with a sticker dedicated to the people of a country that has brought a lot to Formula 1 and where our sport has a great following."

Australia GP: Alonso says pole still wide open
Fernando Alonso says are several teams that could challenge for the pole at this weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari appeared to pick up where they left off in 2010, filling the top spots at the end of the afternoon's practice sessions at Albert Park. But Alonso said he could not yet rule out Mercedes, Williams or Renault ahead of Saturday's qualifying session.

"Nothing new yet and what else would you expect?" he said. "These two free practice sessions have not actually revealed the real relative strengths of the teams: this morning Red Bull went well and in the afternoon it was McLaren's turn, with us and Mercedes always in the mix, while Williams and Renault also seem competitive.

Australia GP: McLarens 1-2 in practice 2
Jenson Button tops session 2
Were they sandbagging? After a mediocre preseason, McLaren finished 1-2 in the second practice session for the Australian Grand Prix as Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton were the only men to break through the 1m25s barrier.

Whether or not McLaren's pace is a true measure of the overall picture remains unclear however, for Red Bull's drivers, who dominated session one, were instructed not to use their adjustable rear wings for much of the session.

In the end, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber on the Option tires, could do no better than 4th and 5th behind Fernando Alonso's Ferrari, which ended the session third.

Early morning showers today should be cleared in time for first practice in about 30 minutes, although a dry track is not certain, with all running from second practice later today right through to Sunday expected to be in dry, mostly sunny conditions.

Today, skies will remain cloudy for the majority of the day, with ambient temperatures reaching a high of 18°C. Tomorrow, the skies will clear to be only partly cloudy, with temperatures rising as a result to 20°C. With a negligible 10% chance of rain, a dry day's running is all but assured.

FIA lengthens rear wing overtaking zone
The FIA has tweaked the moveable rear wing regulations ahead of the first race of the season to increase the chances of the new system boosting overtaking.

The area in which the wing can be deployed during races has been extended beyond the 600-metre zone originally penciled in to incorporate the entire pit-straight at the Albert Park circuit. If a driver is within one second of the car in front when he enters turn 14 he will then be able to activate his rear wing two turns later at the entrance of the final corner. In total the distance between the activation line and the first corner will be just under 860 meters.

GM and Chrysler sue car-hauler UPDATE A dispute between an auto hauler and the automakers whose cars and trucks it delivers spread Wednesday.

Chrysler Group LLC announced it is suing Georgia-based Allied Holdings Ltd. in Canada to force the hauler to return 700 new vehicles being held at Allied facilities in Windsor, Ontario.

GM filed a similar suit in Detroit on Tuesday.

Chrysler's lawsuit was filed in Ontario Superior Court, Chrysler said in an e-mailed statement.

""We have re-sourced the business to other suppliers and are working to ensure a smooth transition," said Katie Hepler, a Chrysler spokeswoman.

Chrysler won a court order for immediate access to 200 of the vehicles, Hepler said, and "has recovered these vehicles."

Most Ky. Speedway Upgrades Nearly Complete
Kentucky Speedway's facelift should be complete well before NASCAR's top series visits the track for the first time in July.

Officials said Thursday the major parts of the ambitious expansion project will be done by late May, well before the green flag drops on the first Sprint Cup race at the 1.5-mile tri-oval located about halfway between Cincinnati and Louisville on July 9.Gov. Steve Beshear toured the facility on Thursday and struggled to put the six-month overhaul in perspective.

Smaller restrictor plate for Talladega
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will be using a restrictor plate with openings of 7/8ths of an inch when the series travels to Talladega Superspeedway for next month’s Aaron’s 499.

That’s slightly smaller, by 1/64th of an inch, than the openings of the plate that were used in this year’s Daytona 500.

Daytona and Talladega are the only two tracks on which the plates, which reduce the amount of airflow into the engine, are used.

The use of a smaller restrictor plate at Talladega is not unusual, due to the track’s slightly larger size – 2.66 miles compared to 2.5 for Daytona.

Teams competed with a 15/16ths of an inch openings in the plates in the last Sprint Cup race at Talladega last October. During practice for that race, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin turned laps of 201 mph.

Barcelona, Day 2: Filippi breaks the 1”32 mark
The first test sessions of the 2011 Auto GP season has just ended in Barcelona, giving two clear indications on what to expect: first of all, given the tight gaps between drivers, the fight for both the overall and the rookie title promises to be really hard. Secondly, the steady technical development going on from the last months of 2009 is paying dividends, and made the Auto GP package one of the most interesting in international motorsport. The best overall lap time by Luca Filippi in Barcelona, 1'31"933, is indeed the quickest time ever posted at Circuit de Catalunya by a racing car apart from F1 and GP2, clearly showing that Auto GP is the car to beat in the one-make series panorama. The Italian driver posted that time in the morning session, when cold temperatures made the track quicker, while in the afternoon heat made the circuit slower, with the team focusing on development and race simulations.

Behind Filippi was again Giovanni Venturini, the Durango rookie showing a really natural talent in finding the limit very early and then a special ability in lapping on it steadily. Venturini closed the day ahead of another Auto GP rookie, Jon Lancaster, who already learned how to make the most of new tires posting a good 1'32"334. Just one tenth adrift was Adrien Tambay, taking DAMS back in the high area of the classification ahead of SuperNova's Adrian Zaugg. The performance by the South-African driver was really good, as he was the only one to improve in the afternoon session, the slower one.

Sunny and warm conditions, ideal for testing, greeted Alexander and the Fortec Motorsport team on their arrival at the two day test which began on Tuesday morning.

Day one, Rossi and Fortec focused on the base line set up of the track. Paul Ricard, a very diverse testing circuit, and while Alexander is a veteran to it, he’d not experienced this particular configuration in his past runs here. Rossi got to grips quickly with lay out and began working with team to fine tune car set up. Jeremy Mayfield files appeal
Jeremy Mayfield has reiterated claims that NASCAR Chairman Brian France disliked him and that NASCAR either fabricated the results of a May 2009 drug test or should have known the likelihood of inaccurate results, according to Mayfield's appeal in his long-running federal lawsuit against NASCAR. Filed late Tuesday night with the U.S. Court of Appeals, Mayfield's appeal challenges the May 2010 ruling in favor of NASCAR and asks that the case be re-opened, allowing more time for investigation by the parties and proceeding toward trial. NASCAR has until April 25 to respond to the appeal, and Mayfield will have two weeks to respond to NASCAR's brief. The appeals court - the Fourth Circuit, based in Richmond, Va. - will not hold hearings from June-August, so the earliest the appeals judges would hold a hearing likely is late September, with a decision on the appeal not coming for at least another month. Kanaan turns cheek to Marco snub
After badmouthing Kanaan, Marco Andretti has to now show he can win races on a consistent basis.  Mario Andretti thinks he is F1 material.  We're not so sure.  Ditto for his teammate Danica Patrick - the days of making excuses that they need more experience are over.  Time to start winning.
Tony Kanaan has reacted after Marco Andretti spoke out on his RACER.com blog about what he reckons to be an inaccurate perception that Marco and his teammates could struggle to refine their setups this year following Kanaan's departure from the team. The rumor in the paddock was that Hunter-Reay and Kanaan carried the team with their ability to help setup race cars.  Marco Andretti denied that saying a lot of the team's setup were his, while Hunter-Reay was good on the street circuit setups.

Asked by reporters following the announcement of his signing with KV Lotus Racing whether he was insulted that his former team would suggest that he perhaps was not as much of a team leader as had been generally perceived, the Brazilian replied, "No, I turned the page. I have a lot of work to do with KV. I've got to thank them for everything they've done for me. I won a lot with them. I have to say I had my time there. If they have something to say, they can say it."

From the dumb and dumber club
As IndyCar prepares for its opening weekend in nearby St. Petersburg, Florida, a Tampa Bay-area woman faces several charges after authorities say she passed out while she and three children waited at a Burger King drive-thru.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office reports that employees called authorities Tuesday night after watching 27-year-old April A. Musson fall asleep in her car. Children -- ages 1, 3 and 5 -- were also in the vehicle.

The sheriff's office says deputies found an oxycodone pill and marijuana on Musson, and she told them she had smoked marijuana earlier that day. Musson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, child abuse, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. She was being held on $7,150 bail.  The children were turned over to their father.

Addition of Cannon a major coup for KV Racing
Kevin Kalkhoven has spent a lot of money on racing and deserves to finally start winning
Kevin Kalkhoven has spent a lot of money on racing, first on Champ Car (he bought the series along with Jerry Forsythe), his Champ Car team, the Champ Car Panoz DP01, and then on his 3 and 4- car IndyCar team without a single win to date.

All that is likely to change in 2011 with the hiring of respected race engineer Michael Cannon (formerly with HVM and before that with Forsythe Racing for AJ Allmendinger) and Tony Kanaan.  The addition of these two should raise the level of the whole team, including drivers Takuma Sato and EJ Viso.

Both Sato and Viso, as well as former KV Racing driver Mario Moraes, have shown spurts of speed, but inevitably crashed more than they finished.  Perhaps because they were trying to carry the car.

With Cannon onboard all three drivers should have better chassis setups on race day and now with Lotus backing the team may be ready to get its first win.  And it cannot come soon enough for Kalkhoven as well as co-owner Jimmy Vasser

Reader not happy with Sebring's focus
Dear AutoRacing1.com, I would like to thank all of the Sebring staff for their hard work. It is greatly appreciated.

Sebring is a track steeped in history and fan loyalty. For my family, it started in 1970, when my father was recently stationed at McCoy AFB in Orlando. He was able to bring my two older brothers down to witness Steve McQueen and Mario Andretti. Many years later I myself was old enough to make the annual trip to see Hurley Haywood in 1980. This track and the racing was an experience that led to a bond between father and brothers. We reached out in our adulthood to see races around the world, but it has always been this track and race that has been special.

Last year my 76 year old father rejoined us, one last time, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of taking his sons to their first race. This is a memory we will all cherish.

I hope you have read this email so far and will indulge me a little more.
