Carlin Teammates Jones, Chilton Lead the Way with New Indy Lights Dallara IL-15
Ed Jones
Ed Jones and Max Chilton led the way for European powerhouse open-wheel team Carlin as the Dallara IL-15 and turbocharged 2.0-liter Mazda MZR-R engines made their official track debut today with a pair of practice sessions for this weekend's Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season-opening Mazda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Presented by Peninsula Pipeline.

Jones was fastest in this morning's opening practice session with a time of 1:07.1401 (average speed 96.515 mph), which was already faster than the existing race lap record of 1:07.2141 set by Sebastian Saavedra in 2009. A heavy rain shower precluded any activity in the scheduled afternoon session, so Jones' morning time remained as the fastest.

Andretti Autosport, Road to Indy St. Pete report
Matthew Brabham
MATT BRABHAM
NO. 83 ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT MAZDA

- Came away P5 in the IL15's first official practice session of the 2015 Indy Lights Championship
- Ran 17 laps in the morning session with a best time of 01:07:9134

"It was a day of ups and downs really. This morning was okay - it was only my second day in the car, so to get out there and come away P5 was okay. Obviously I want to be P1, and we're still working towards that. We made quite a lot of setup changes from the first session to the second session, it's just unfortunate that the second session got rained off and canceled. We didn't get to try those changes but we'll go into qualifying and see how it goes tomorrow. Having a lot of fun so far - it's good to be back in St. Pete."

Andretti Autosport -- St. Pete Practice report
Ryan Hunter-Reay
RYAN HUNTER-REAY
NO. 28 DHL HONDA

"There was some promise in our early speed; the DHL Honda was up at the top of the time charts there for the first couple of runs, but as the session went on we just didn't get the most out of the car. We need to do some changes to react to the balance that we now have. On our new tire runs we had yellow flags in the corner so I had to slow down. I think at best we could have been P9, P8. A lot of the front runners ran three sets of tires instead of the two sets that we ran. Hopefully with our changes we can move forward tomorrow."

First day of NHRA Four-Wide Nationals Qualifying cancelled due to weather
The first day of qualifying at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals was cancelled when persistent rain throughout the day followed by cold temperatures and a rising dew point plagued the zMAX Dragway facility.

Qualifying was halted before any of the action even began, and neither of the Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaros, driven respectively by Greg Anderson and Jason Line, were allowed a pass before Mother Nature had her say.

Qualifying will continue with two sessions on Saturday: one at 1:15 p.m. and the final session at 4:15 p.m., before the fields are set for final eliminations at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 67 HARTMAN OIL CFH RACING CHEVROLET: ABOUT THE SEASON-OPENING WEEKEND AT ST. PETERSBURG: “It’s great to be here always. First off, it’s the first round. I’m very excited to be back and racing again. It was a long offseason for all of us. We’ve done a lot of work, all the teams have. For us, we’re a new group with the merger of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing. There’s been a lot of work merging both teams. It’s nice having a teammate and having Luca (Filippi) this weekend.  It’s been fun working with him and working both sides of the garage with having two cars. I’m having a good time. We just need to find more speed. We were good at the start of the session but didn’t finish well. We just need to find speed.”

Late afternoon update from St. Petersburg (Update) UPDATE The 2nd session for the Indycars is over and no one went out on the wet track.  New aero kit parts are in short supply and no one was going to risk it.  The times would have been meaningless anyway since the rest of the weekend should be dry.

03/27/15 The second practice session still has not started as officials attempt to dry the track.  The rain has stopped but the skies are still threatening.

City takes step to replace Irwindale Speedway with outlet mall
'Last year Irwindale seemed on the verge of driving the Sriracha plant out of the city over pungent smells before the hot sauce company owner and politicians cooled down and patched things up.

'But the industrial town of 1,500 now looks poised to lose another of its well-known features after the City Council voted to approve plans to demolish the Irwindale Speedway to make way for a 700,000-square foot outlet mall.

Chevy dominates opening practice in St. Petersburg
Will Power
Will Power
The first practice session of the Verizon Indy Cars began under threat of rain, but it was just a threat, the sun was in and out of the clouds throughout, and the temperature was a cool 77 degrees. It was interesting to watch the times with the new aero package, they were dropping consistently, with Juan Pablo Montoya getting down into the 101's early, along with Will Power.

There's a good possibility that this will be the only dry practice session today as the rain seems sure to arrive this afternoon. There were a couple of spins as the drivers tested the limits of adhesion on this street circuit, but all was well thanks to the forgiving runoff of the St. Petersburg circuit. The first practice session was very clean with no real situations to speak of, and the rain never came.

Noon update from St. Pete
At 12:30 PM Eastern time the IndyCars finally made it onto the track with their new aero package, however, rain is coming.  We think they will get this session done in the dry, but there is a very high chance that the 2nd practice late this afternoon will be rained out.  So far the lap times are all over the place as drivers and engineers figure out the best setup with the new aero kits.  Much more news later..... Mark C. reporting from St. Pete.

'Big Bill' tells the story of the man who started it all in NASCAR
'Big Bill' France Sr.
'Big Bill' France Sr.
You can't mention the sport of NASCAR, all of its ups and downs, all of its success and popularity or where it is today without focusing first on its founder: Bill France Sr.

Before there was Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson or Darrell Waltrip. Before there was Dale Earnhardt Sr., 100-thousand seat tracks overflowing with fans and skyrocketing success. Before there was Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano or Chase Elliott, there was Big Bill, the 6-5 giant of a man with a huge frame and even bigger dreams.

France had a vision of making NASCAR the biggest thing around. When he founded the organization in December 1947, it may have been hard to imagine the popularity and success the sport would garner. It quickly became a staple of the South with its colorful characters, big-time sponsorship with R.J. Reynolds/Winston and rapid fan support.

Williams handed $10,000 suspended fine in Malaysia
Felipe Massa
The Williams Formula 1 team has been handed a suspended $10,000 fine after Felipe Massa used a set of tires outside the permitted times during first practice.

Each driver is given an extra set of prime tires which can only be used during the first 30 minutes of the session before they must be handed back.

Massa was still seen to be using them after the 30-minute mark, but the FIA accepted no benefit had been gained and therefore applied a suspended fine which must only be paid if a similar infringement is committed this season.

Ecclestone lets frustration show in Malaysia
Ecclestone watches as the sport he built plummets. The fabulous F1 'scream' is gone and the boring Mercedes 1-2 parade is locked in for years, their advantage protected by the token based engine freeze.
(GMM)  Bernie Ecclestone cut a frustrated figure on Friday.

Speaking to reporters in Malaysia, the F1 supremo refused to accept the blame for the axe of the German grand prix.

The 84-year-old said organizers simply would not pay the right price.

"It's funny how these people dig up all this money for things like the Olympics, swimming championships, European athletics and god knows what else," he said.
