Bourdais: Blame IndyCar drivers, not aero kits
Sebastien Bourdais
Sebastien Bourdais has a message for IndyCar Series fans: Don't blame the new aero kits for the mess in the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Blame the drivers and the long off-season, he said Monday.

"It was the first race after a very long off-season, and everybody was too impatient, not focused and no in the rhythm of racing at such a high level," he told The Star. "The aggression level was pretty high. It was like the season finale not the season opener."

Ferrari Rules Out Turbo V12 Engines But Will Use KERS Boost
2015 LaFerrari XX
With the demand for higher fuel economy standards without sacrificing power, many companies are dabbling with different solutions. Some are toying with the hybrid route while many are opting for the tried and true method of turbocharging. Ferrari has dipped its toe in both pools recently, but fear not: the mighty V12 isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

A source close to Ferrari told Autocar that the speculation claiming future V12 engines found in the famed automaker's most hyperactive hypercars won't see turbos affixed to them. The reason this is even being talked about is because of the recent 488 GTB, which replaces the naturally aspirated 458 Italia with a mid-engine turbocharged V8. It's the first time in a while this configuration came with a turbo, so it’s a natural step in logic to think that the V12s would be next, but they won't be.

'No change' after Pirelli's China buyout - Hembery (Update) UPDATE Chinese chemical fertilizer and tire company ChemChina (Beijing) has recently made a bid for Italian tire manufacturer and official F1 supplier Pirelli.

The Chinese company is partnered with Camfin S.p.A. (Cam Finanziaria SpA). However, the approximate bid of over 7 billion Euros may fall short of what may be needed to appease minority investors.

Unfortunately for them, the ChemChina deal appears to be the best (and only) offer on the table. In order to take Pirelli private and off the stock market, a 90% stock holding would be required. This is the challenge ahead that could stymie the effort.

Wolff: 'We have the weapons at our disposal'
Smug Toto Wolff knows Mercedes has been holding back on its secret pieces and more power.  Can Ferrari respond?
Mercedes' Toto Wolff says that the team are fully locked on to bouncing back after their loss to Ferrari in Malaysia, and says the team have the wherewithal to do so. Sepang was the first race that saw Mercedes defeated on merit since 2013, and understandably left the team somewhat shocked after Ferrari's long run pace caught them by surprise.

However, after adjusting to the fact that at least one team appears to have significantly cut their long-standing pace advantage, Mercedes are going into the Chinese GP weekend all guns blazing and determined to take back the top step of the podium.

"We left Malaysia with plenty to think about," said Wolff. "It may have been a good result for the sport - but for us, it was a wake-up call. This is something you cannot afford to happen often and, although we had two cars on the podium, we have been looking very carefully at every area where we could have performed better."

Tesla hires Red Bull Racing's former chief mechanic
Kenny Handkammer
Tesla made a big new hire today, signing former Red Bull Racing head mechanic Kenny Handkammer to become the California carmaker's new Global Director of Service Training.

Naturally, Elon Musk took to Twitter to talk about it, and what he says is interesting:

"As everyone has experienced at one time or another, the dealer-service experience can be very hit-or-miss. Musk clearly sees Handkammer as a change agent. F1 is about speed and efficiency in doing everything.

Buescher to drive #34 at Texas
Chris Buescher
Front Row Motorsports announced Monday morning that Chris Buescher will drive the team's No. 34 Ford this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.

Buescher, a NASCAR XFINITY Series regular, is scheduled to make his third career Sprint Cup Series start for the Bob Jenkins-owned team in Saturday night's Duck Commander 500 (7:30 p.m. ET, FOX). He'll be pulling double-duty, driving the Roush Fenway Racing No. 60 Ford in Friday's O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 (8:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1) for XFINITY cars.

Buescher is the fourth driver in six races for the No. 34 team. David Ragan began the year, but hopped in as the interim driver for the injured Kyle Busch in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Toyota. That move set off a chain of driver swaps, putting Joe Nemechek behind the wheel at Atlanta in the season's second race.

NASCAR penalizes #31 car for tire violation (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Richard Childress Racing has appealed the penalties NASCAR levied against Ryan Newman's team for allegedly manipulating tires.

NASCAR this week said tires taken from Newman after the March 22 race in California failed an independent inspection and had been altered to intentionally release air pressure during the race.

Crew chief Luke Lambert was fined $125,000 and suspended for the next six races. The suspension also includes the All-Star race in May. Lambert was also placed on probation through the end of the year.

Tire technician James Bender and engineer Philip Surgen also were suspended six races and placed on probation through Dec. 31.

Mercedes expects to beat Ferrari in Shanghai
Hamilton has won three times in Shanghai
Hamilton has won three times in Shanghai
Lewis Hamilton

Malaysia was a tough weekend. It always is with the heat - but with car problems on Friday, rain during qualifying on Saturday and a race which didn't go to plan on Sunday, this one was particularly challenging. I think ultimately we made the best choices we could - but there is always room for improvement and we've been working hard to analyses everything for the next race in China. Shanghai is one of my favorite locations - simply because of the fans. I don't know how, but from the moment we land at the airport they know we're there. It really is amazing to see the support we get. The circuit itself is a different challenge to Albert Park and Sepang - but it's one I really enjoy and it suits my driving style quite well. I won the race last year and have only finished outside of the podium places twice, so the target is definitely to build on that and get back to the front.

Audi ready to battle for World Endurance Championship title
Audi's R 18 e-tron quattro
Audi's R 18 e-tron quattro
Ingolstadt - Audi is ready for the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). On Sunday, April 12, at Silverstone in the UK, the chase begins for the World Championship title that Audi won in 2012 and 2013. With two new R18 e-tron quattro cars and six successful drivers, Audi Sport Team Joest will be battling for the first victory in the new season.

A newly designed hybrid sports car, some 10,000 test kilometers, an Audi team-building and fitness camp in February and an initial meeting of the teams at the official FIA WEC Prologue on the last weekend in March: "Audi is ready for the 2015 season. It’ll be tougher this year than ever before," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "At the Prologue at Le Castellet, we met with our opponents for the first time in the 2015 season and were able to see that everyone is thoroughly prepared - even though nobody put their cards on the table there. Our aim is to win again at Silverstone, like we did in 2012 and 2013."

"The first two races of the season have seen varying fortunes for Sahara Force India. After scoring points in Australia, it was more of a challenge in Malaysia where Nico and Sergio showed their fighting spirit and enjoyed plenty of TV airtime as a result.

"Both weekends were valuable learning opportunities for us as we work hard to improve the VJM08.

Jorda agrees with Bernie, Woman should have their own league
Carmen Jorda
Most sporting events have categories for both genders: football, tennis, Olympic sports to name only a few. But not in racing. While several women involved in motorsport have suggested that creating a separate series for female competitors is the wrong path to take, newly-signed Lotus development driver Carmen Jorda reckons such a step would in fact be progressive, as she explained to GPUpdate.net in Malaysia.

"It's not fair that women have to compete in the same championship as men, because we're never going to become World Champion, and I think women deserve that chance," says the 26-year-old Spaniard.

"In every sport you can think of, tennis, skiing, or whatever, it has women and men championships. So they should think about it. I think this could have a real future. I really would like to see a Formula 1 women championship."

Monisha Kaltenborn: F1 lacks direction
Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn says Formula One lacks a clear direction in order to be able to implement change.

There are often discussions about changes in F1, with Bernie Ecclestone describing the sport as “an old house” which he’s always trying to repair. While Kaltenborn is happy with an ongoing dialogue between Ecclestone and the teams, she says F1 needs to identify a clear future direction to understand what fans want and whether it can be successfully implemented.

Andretti Formula E: Long Beach report
Jean-Eric Vergne came home 2nd yesterday at the Long Beach ePrix
French racing driver Jean-Eric Vergne has brought home the Andretti Formula-E Team's third FIA Formula-E Championship trophy today with a second-place finish and his fourth successive FanBoost gain.

Friday shakedown was resumed for the sixth round of the all-electric racing series which took place at the iconic road racing location of Long Beach, California. Modified for the Formula E event, the 2.1-km track featured seven turns and utilized the IndyCar start/finish line adjacent to the Marina before heading off in a clockwise direction past the Rainbow Lagoon. The track then turned right onto South Pine Avenue before re-joining with the more familiar track configuration. The cars then passed around the grounds of the Convention Centre before a final right-hand hairpin brought them back across the start/finish line to complete the lap.

Tesla Brings Home Record Q1 Sales, Waiting For a Profit
Elon Musk's Tesla sales picking up, but the company is still bleeding money
Tesla's record first quarter comes with sales numbering 10,030 and a celebratory sales ban from West Virginia. Today, the House of Musk (Elon, that is, not body odor) said sales during the past three months were its highest ever, adding that it saw a 55-percent year-over-year increase. Tesla also said it would release sales three days after each quarter instead of waiting 40 days to publish them in its required 10-Q SEC filings, although it still refuses to give out monthly sales numbers like every other publicly-traded car company.

So where does Tesla Motors go from here? The company expects to sell 55,000 cars this year, including in that number sales of the still-not-on-sale Model X that is still running about prototype guise. That 55K figure is way, way up from the 31,000 cars Tesla moved last year. Since Model S production began in July 2012, the company has sold 66,798 of the electric sedans worldwide through March 31. Only 1350 vehicles were purchased on a lease last year; the rest were straight cash or finance.

Allison disagrees with Horner on Wind Tunnels
James Allison
Ferrari's technical director James Allison has called Christian Horner's proposal for a wind tunnel ban "extremely foolish".

The Red Bull boss recently suggested the idea as part of measures to reduce costs in the sport, whilst believing a reliance on CFD (computational fluid dynamics) is the future of F1.

Allison though doesn't believe CFD is at an advanced enough stage to become the sole development tool.

"That would be an extremely foolish direction for the sport to take," he said. "The reason I say that is that we all are fortunate to receive money from our backers, who back us in the hope that we will then put a car on the grid that will do them proud.

Buemi wins pole (update)
Sebastien Buemi set fast time in qualifying for the Long Beach ePrix
Sebastien Buemi stole pole position in the closing seconds of qualifying in Long Beach narrowly edging out Daniel Abt and e.dams-Renault team-mate Nicolas Prost.

Championship leader Nicolas Prost set the early pace to sit in provisional pole position in qualifying group two but was eventually eclipsed by the late runners in the final minutes of the session.

Abt looked set to start from the front of the grid with a quick lap following a red flag to clear the stricken Trulli car of Liuzzi but Buemi kept his cool to clock a 56.853s. The Swiss driver picks up three bonus points and has the best possible view down into Turn 1 as the lights go out later this afternoon.

Alexander Rossi and Racing Engineering complete a positive final GP2 Series test program in Bahrain
Rossi happy with final GP2 test before season starts
Bahrain International Circuit was the backdrop for the final pre-season GP2 Series test, with all teams attending the three day session ahead of the first race of the season. Alexander Rossi completed a strong and positive second test with Racing Engineering, and the three days showcased the strength of the series, with the top drivers just tenths of a second apart, and highlighted the caliber of teams competing in the 2015 season.

The first morning session was met with high temperatures and a dusty track, and saw most teams utilizing the time to develop the setup of their cars rather than place indicative performance times. Alexander completed ten laps with a best time of 1:42.801s which placed him in P8 by lunchtime.

Hockey tape, aluminum would solve IndyCar problem
IndyCar's flying wing parts fractured the skull of a spectator.  If they ever kill anyone the insurance companies could shut the sport down.
As the result of a woman being injured by a piece of carbon fiber that flew over catch fencing and hit her in the head during the St. Petersburg IndyCar race last Sunday, I assume the series’ brain trust is working on what to do about it.

If they aren’t, they should be. This is a bigger problem than they think it is.

They have two choices: 1) Close their eyes, bury their heads and pray it never happens again, or, 2) come up with a solution.

I think I can help. But first, here’s a quick recap.

Judge dismisses Panther Racing suit against Rahal, IndyCar
John Barnes, one of the people who supported Tony George's split of IndyCar racing that resulted in the destruction of the sport, gone from the IndyCar paddock for good
A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by Indianapolis-based Panther Racing Inc., which claimed it lost a $13.1 million sponsorship with the Army National Guard because of bid-rigging and other improprieties.

The Panther Racing team in February 2014 sued Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, IndyCar and others after losing the sponsorship. Judge Tanya Walton Pratt of the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis dismissed the suit on March 25.

The Brownsburg-based Rahal team sought the Army National Guard sponsorship in the fall of 2013, but Panther Racing appealed to the U.S. Government Accountability Office to keep the contract it had held since 2008. The GAO denied Panther's appeal, leading to the lawsuit. All military sponsorships are reviewed annually.

Panther Racing's suit, which sought unspecified damages, accused IndyCar of breach of contract, contending Panther had exclusive rights to provide Fan Village access and benefits to the Army National Guard, which was a requirement of the contract.
