Lopes: "If the weather was different, we'd be having a different conversation"
Drivers were losing control on the straights in the wet
The inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana had one culprit that consistently played havoc with the weekend schedule: rain.

But it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the fans and corporate sponsors who made the trip to NOLA Motorsports Park for the Andretti Sports Marketing-promoted race.

In a wide-ranging conversation with Andretti Sports Marketing president John Lopes, the weather was cited as the single biggest issue of the track's inaugural Verizon IndyCar Series weekend, and also the thing that brought out the resolve from those who were on site at the race.

AJ Foyt Racing Notes - Long Beach Grand Prix
Sato won Long Beach for AJ Foyt Racing in 2013
Sato won Long Beach for AJ Foyt Racing in 2013
AJ Foyt Racing is the only team to have competed in every race (274) since the Indy Racing League began in 1996. This race will be the team's 275th start, Sato's 89th, and Hawksworth's 20th  in the Verizon IndyCar Series. Driving for Foyt, Sato won the event in 2013 to become the first Japanese driver to win an IndyCar race.

TAKUMA SATO ON:

  • Long Beach circuit: "The Long Beach track has a great balance of layout. It has both high-speed and low-speed corners and heavy braking followed by good straights which means there are a few over-taking opportunities for drivers. The track is a little on the lower side of grip-level but it can evolve a lot over the weekend as it rubbers down in the consistently good weather. The venue has a fantastic atmosphere and great restaurants downtown or nearby. It's just one of the best street courses I've known from many aspects."

IndyCar: GP of Louisiana TV Rating
The Grand Prix of Louisiana IndyCar race live on NBC Sports Network Sunday afternoon pulled in a 0.27 TV Rating. Since the race was such an embarrassment for the series, it's probably good no one was watching. A Driving-In-The-Rain 101 class is desperately needed by the big boys. The support series drivers can show them how it is done.

This was a first year event so there is no ratings to compare it to from last year. By comparison, the NASCAR Xfinity Series pulled in a 0.71 rating on FS1 8:30 pm FRIDAY for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 350.

Fiat-Chrysler Sued Over Incorrect Axle Ratio in Ram 1500
It appears Ram Trucks may have delivered a few bum steers. According to a report in Automotive News, South Carolina resident and 2014 Ram 1500 Big Horn owner Robert Besley has filed a lawsuit against the maker for delivering his vehicle without the optional 3.55:1 rear axle he paid for.

After owning the pickup for nine months, Besley was informed by Ram that the Monroney was inaccurate and that his truck was not equipped with a 3.55:1-ratio axle, but instead with the standard 3.21:1 rear end. A simple $50 option, the 3.55:1 "heavy duty" rear axle is intended to permit better low-speed grunt and towing, the ostensible downside being a slight reduction in fuel economy in comparison to vehicles equipped with the 3.21:1 ratio.

Ford Patents 11-Speed Automatic
In a world where eight-speed automatics are common, nine-speeds are available, and 10-speed transmissions are in the works, Ford's application for a patent on an 11-speed automatic transmission has an air of inevitability about it.

Unlike Ford's 10-speed automatic, which is being jointly developed with General Motors, the 11-speed appears to be a Ford-only effort. The application indicates a design that uses planetary gearsets, which are not used with dual-clutch configurations, so this is likely to be a conventional, torque-converter automatic. We don't know yet which model the new gearbox will appear in - or whether it will be produced at all.

The outspoken executive last month appeared to flirt with rivals when he dropped a not-so-subtle hint that it would be "technically feasible" to join forces with either Ford or General Motors.

Marchionne and members of the Fiat-founding Agnelli family are now said to be actively pitching the idea to GM -- the preferred suitor -- unnamed sources have told Reuters.

Coyne on NOLA: We Could Have Won
Carlos Huertas could have won in New Orleans but he crashed in the rain like so many of the other IndyCar stars
A rain soaked weekend in New Orleans resulted in a very ominous water stream during the race that affected the fortunes of the Coyne crews.  The No. 18 car of Carlos Huertas was poised for a possible strategy aided win on Sunday as the Verizon IndyCar Series and Dale Coyne Racing made their competitive debut at NOLA Motorsport Park.

The Dale Coyne Racing team, again, showed their expertise in timed race strategy.  Carlos Huertas was running second in a race that would only see 3 more green laps.  This gave him an excellent chance to win the race.

"We had an extra 5 laps on eventual winner James Hinchcliffe," commented Coyne.  "However, starting from second behind Hinch, Carlos spun on the turn 13 stream of water and took himself back in the grid and gave James the extra caution and shorter race distance that he needed to get to the end on fuel.  We had enough fuel."

Miller: New Orleans fans deserve better
Tony Kanaan goes swamp buggy racing with his IndyCar.
Robin Miller of Racer writes, Here are some sad facts about Sunday's inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana:

Between the French Quarter Festival and the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival, there were more than 200,000 people in and around New Orleans over the weekend. The first IndyCar race in Louisiana may have drawn 8,000, if you count crew members, parking lot attendants, corner workers and the alligator outside the main gate.

Locals said the wettest weeks of the year in New Orleans are in mid-April or the first week in May. It rained out qualifying on Saturday and, after a morning-long monsoon Sunday, the race started an hour early and became a timed event.

Final thoughts from NOLA
The fans patience was tested this weekend. However, spirits were not dampened at NOLA Motorsports Park.
A few final notes from NOLA Motorsports Park.

By now, we imagine you've seen the race and know the results. It was by any measure a difficult weekend for the series and there are many issues that need to be addressed going forward. Look for Brian Carroccio's NOLA Postscript sometime this week to cover a few of those subjects.

One thing that was encouraging being on-site was the passion of the fans at NOLA. Their patience was certainly tested throughout the weekend, and there were parking issues and such that you usually get from a new event. However, none of what happened seemed to dampen their enthusiasm. Hopefully, the series can address some of the issues that happened both on track and off and put on good shows at the track for years to come.

I also had the pleasure of meeting NOLA track designer Alan Wilson and his wife Desire today. They currently live in Utah near Miller Motorsport Park and made it back to New Orleans for the weekend. You likely remember Desire for her career on track, which included two South African Formula Ford championships in the early 1970s, and starts in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring. She attempted to qualify for the 1980 British Grand Prix and ran in the 1981 non-championship South African Grand Prix.

Urrutia wins Pro Mazda Race 1

Rosberg accuses Hamilton of spoiling China GP
Hamilton - "I didn't do anything intentionally to slow any of the cars up.  I just focused on myself." Of course Hamilton is lying because on the last pitstop he went 2 laps longer than Rosberg and during those 2 laps his lap times dropped by over 1-second per lap.  He had plenty in hand.
(GMM)  It was after the checkered flag flew that the real fireworks began in China between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Rosberg, beaten in Shanghai, re-fired old tensions with his Mercedes teammate by accusing Briton Hamilton of deliberately spoiling his race.

Rosberg had been heard during the race asking strategists to push Hamilton's pace, as he fended off the increasing threat posed by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Indeed, Hamilton was even told on the radio to speed up.

But Hamilton told reporters afterwards: "I wasn't controlling his (Rosberg's) race, I was controlling my own race".

Rosberg turned to his teammate and responded: "It's interesting to hear from you, Lewis, that you were just thinking about yourself, and necessarily that was compromising my race."

The German - notably grumpy all weekend - did not hide his fury, while Hamilton told television reporters afterwards: "I'm not really sure what his problem is.

Distortion of Larson's inside tires show low tire pressure
The biggest topic of conversation over the past few weeks in the NASCAR garage has been tires -- more specifically, teams altering tires. Starting at the end of the 2014 season, NASCAR began taking tires from select teams as their post-race inspection process. The practice began again this year starting with the third race of the Sprint Cup Series season at Phoenix International Raceway. The rumor in the garage has been team are poking tiny 0.001- to 0.002-inch holes in the sidewall of the tire to bleed air pressure, allowing the tire to reach optimal pressure sooner and maximizing grip.
