Statement from Richard Childress, Chairman and CEO of Richard Childress Racing
Richard Childress
Richard Childress
"I'd like to thank the Appeals Panel for taking the time to hear our appeal today. While they decided to reduce the penalties to the minimum penalties for a P5 violation, I am disappointed that the entire penalty was not overturned given the facts we presented.

"In order for the team to move forward, and focus our efforts on the upcoming races, Luke (Lambert), Phil (Surgen) and James (Bender) will begin serving their suspensions this weekend at Bristol. Veteran crew chief Todd Parrott will fill in as crew chief for this weekend's race.

"We are still discussing our options and have not yet determined whether to appeal the penalties to the Final Appeals Officer."

No 2nd car for Herta at Indy
Robin Miller reports for racer.com that the 99th Indianapolis 500 field has been reduced by one without turning a wheel. Jay Howard, scheduled to run a second Honda-powered car for Bryan Herta Autosport, won't be trying to make his second Indy starting lineup after all.

"The funding didn't come through and so we'll just be running our one car," said Herta, who is campaigning rookie Gabby Chaves (TOP) in the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series.

NASCAR Texas TV Rating (Update)
UPDATE For the first time in 14 years televising NASCAR, FOX slipped under a 3.0 rating for a Sprint Cup race. NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Texas drew a 2.9 final rating and 4.8 million viewers on FOX Saturday night, down 24% in ratings and 23% in viewership from 2013 (3.8, 6.3M) and down 28% in both measures from 2012 (4.0, 6.8M). Last year's race was postponed due to rain, earning a 2.4 and 3.8 million in its scheduled Sunday afternoon window. Excluding rainouts, the 2.9 rating is easily the lowest ever for a NASCAR Sprint Cup telecast on FOX (dates back to 2001). The previous low was a 3.3 for last year's Richmond race. Of the 18 lowest rated NASCAR telecasts on FOX, 13 have taken place on a Saturday night. Again excluding rainouts, the 2.9 is also the lowest rating in the history of the spring Texas race (dates back to 1997). The previous low was the previously noted 3.8 in 2013. Prior to moving from Sunday to Saturday in 2011, the race had never dipped below a 4.7 rating. Sports Media Watch

Verstappen not for sale - Marko
Verstappen
(GMM)  Max Verstappen is not for sale, Red Bull driver manager Dr Helmut Marko insisted on Thursday.

The hype around the 17-year-old sensation is now swirling, particularly after his spectacular drive in China that ended with Renault engine failure.

Unfortunately, Renault cannot rule out more of the same problems at Toro Rosso and Red Bull in Bahrain, given the nature of 'flyaway back-to-back' race weekends.

Max Verstappen - True brilliance at 17
Max Verstappen

First and foremost, I would like to kick this piece off with an apology. I would like to apologize to Max Verstappen for doubting his credentials, I thought he was going to come into Formula One and be about as disciplined behind the wheel as a mentally defective Hyena. Alas, that has been far from the case. In the three races that we have seen he has put in the best drives, considering his very brief motorsport career, that I have been alive to witness. So, sorry Max, you're brilliant, truly brilliant.

The reason I chose to write this piece is essentially to admit how wrong I was about this boy -  I can actually say 'boy' because he can't even legally go out and buy a few cans of cider. Verstappen is incredible behind the wheel. I read Martin Brundle's fantastic piece on Sky Sports F1 about Verstappen after the Chinese Grand Prix.

Kyle Busch to meet with media (Update) UPDATE Kyle Busch, injured in an accident during the Daytona XFINITY Series race, met with members of the media at Joe Gibbs Racing on Wednesday afternoon. Some notes:
  • Busch says the accident was the hardest hit of his career.
  • He left the racing surface at 176mph and impacted the wall at 90mph.
  • The crash was so hard that his helmet and chest hit the steering wheel.
  • He says he knew instantly that both legs were broken.
  • Busch took the blame for the accident, saying that he was being too greedy trying to win the race.
  • Doctors have not given him a timeline to return to racing. They are pleased with his progress and believe he is ahead of schedule.
  • He would like to be able to return to racing by Daytona in July, but is not sure that will be possible;
  • Busch would like to be Chase eligible upon his return, but believes it could be hard to get to the top 30 in points.
  • Busch will need additional surgery. He has one scheduled for December to remove screws and plates in his left foot.

"I think some foreign media are more sensitive about the topic than local media," she added. "I was just told by my employer to stand on the podium, and that's what I did."

Audi R8 LMS ultra (Sebastien Loeb Racing)
Ingolstadt - A new challenge with changed regulations: four Audi customer teams -- including the 2014 runners-up - will start the new French GT Championship season at Ledenon next weekend (April 18 to 19).

The Audi teams with a total of seven sports cars will be meeting two other marques in France. A modified race format promises additional suspense. Video: The Unforgettable Silverstone ELMS Press Conference
The least popular driver at the end of the European Le Mans Series’ 4 Hour season opener at Silverstone happened to be one of the pilots who won the race. Greaves Racing’s Jon Lancaster completed the final stint for the team in the lead, but earned the position after knocking Tristan Gommendy’s Thiriet by TDS Ligier from first place and trading paint with JOTA Sport’s Harry Tincknell, who incurred contact from Lancaster and was later driven off the track by the former GP2 competitor.

Boos from the fans during the podium celebrations gave an insight into how the public felt about Lancaster’s tactics, and in the post-race press conference, Tincknell and Gommendy took wildly different routes to express their frustration with the young Englishman.

Bahrain GP Preview: Mercedes AMG
Lewis Hamilton should win most of the races this year
Lewis Hamilton in a good place right now because Rosberg can't beat him and Ferrari is still not quite fast enough to beat him consistently

Lewis Hamilton
I was really buzzing after the result in China and I have to say a big thank you to the team for the amazing job they did all weekend. As always, though, my thoughts have been completely focused on the next race from the moment we left the circuit on Sunday. It's been a great start - but for me last season showed that you can never feel too comfortable and that's even more the case this time around with Ferrari right there with us. I don't actually have the best record in Bahrain compared to other circuits. Last year was my first win here and it was definitely one I'll remember after a great fight with Nico. That's what I love about racing and it's a special feeling to come out on top in a battle like that. I'm in a good place right now. The momentum is with me, so the target is to carry that on and hopefully repeat last year's performance.

(GMM)  Mercedes' race drivers were dealing with very different dramas in the quick-fire hop between China and Bahrain.

For championship leader Lewis Hamilton, it was the manner of his celebrations on the Shanghai podium that drew negative attention.

Anti-sexism campaigners objected to photos depicting the reigning world champion spraying champagne into the face of an uncomfortable-looking podium hostess.

Video: Watch IndyCar tire guy get clobbered by out-of-control car at NOLA (Update) UPDATE The IndyCar crew member who got knocked upside down in Sunday's race at NOLA Motorsports Park knows he was fortunate not to be hurt beyond bruises and a cut leg.

But Todd Phillips also did everything right to save himself when his Dale Coyne Racing car came sliding through the pit box. He was alert, and he got his feet off the ground before being struck.

"I'm glad I jumped," he told The Indianapolis Star on Tuesday evening. "If I'm planted (on the ground) it gets real ugly real quick."

Bristol NASCAR Goodyear Tire Notes
Teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same Goodyear tire codes at Bristol this week -this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires these teams ran at this track last August.

Bristol is the only track at which NASCAR teams are scheduled to run either of these two tire codes - unlike on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, on which teams generally do not run inner liners in their tires, teams are required to run liners in their right-side tires only at Bristol.

Air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. Goodyear Technical Bulletin.

Richard Petty and his special edition Mustang
Richard Petty and his special edition Mustang
When Ford launches a new Mustang, expect it to take over the SEMA show. Last year's edition of the aftermarket bacchanal in Vegas was rife with varying takes on Ford's latest iteration of its venerable pony car, not the least of which was a certain GT built by Petty's Garage.

Buoyed by popular opinion, Ford teamed up with the King's operation and decided to churn out a limited series of the cars, available for order at your local Ford dealer on a first-come, first-serve basis. Limited to a total of 143 cars for 2015-100 Stage 1 examples and 43 Stage 2 cars-the Petty's Garage Mustang GTs churn out 627 horsepower courtesy of a Ford Racing/Roush blower bolted to the Coyote V-8.
