Weekly NASCAR cheaters report  UPDATE #3 MWR Statement: Executive Vice President of Michael Waltrip Racing Cal Wells: "NASCAR indicated we were running a part, a radiator pan, which had not been officially submitted for approval. We accept NASCAR's ruling and will not appeal because we cannot debate whether the part was submitted, only whether or not the part needed submission. This gives us a clear line of sight on how parts need to be submitted for approval. We will work diligently with NASCAR in the future on all new parts to ensure this does not happen to MWR again."

04/21/10 NASCAR has issued penalties to the #13, #47, #00 and #56 teams that compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as a result of rule violations committed at Texas Motor Speedway last week. Robert "Bootie" Barker, crew chief of the #13 team, and Frank Kerr, crew chief of the #47 team, have each been fined $75,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 20-2.3A (unapproved added weight); 20-7 (all engine cooling system components must be approved by NASCAR prior to being used in competition); and 20-7.3A (radiator mount; failure to submit components) of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rule book. Greener engines need to be geared to smaller teams - Norbert Haug  Formula One's next generation of engine regulations need to be geared towards protecting the smaller teams rather than boosting the major players, according to Mercedes boss Norbert Haug.

"I think now we have the best teams, and it is good to have a variety of cars in the field, but we need to support the independent manufacturers to make sure that we have a bottom-up plan, rather than a top-down plan," Haug told Autosport. "We need the independent manufacturers and we need to have Ferrari. We need to find a good solution and still, Formula 1 needs to be technically driven.

"I'm very positive about the process and we can achieve it together. It has been possible in the past and there is a good constructive atmosphere between Jean Todt and the teams." He added that the future was likely to be about smaller, more environmentally-friendly engines.

"We can discuss green initiatives, but Formula 1 needs to be technically driven," he said. "We need to be mindful that we are building the cleanest cars we can. The engine will be downsized in 2013 because the fuel consumption has to go down, and we need to cut carbon emissions. But we must not think that a 700bhp engine is going to be the greenest car ever, because that's not great." ESPNF1

Rain-delayed Texas NASCAR Race draws solid crowd  The work week in the state of Texas got off to a sluggish start Monday as NASCAR fans showed their passion in support of the rain-delayed Samsung Mobile 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Despite being run on a Monday – which traditionally leads to spotty and disappointing race crowds – the TMS Nation came out in full-force as media and NASCAR estimated the crowd at 92,200 for the Samsung Mobile 500. Although Texas Motor Speedway annually attracts a crowd in excess of 170,000 for this April event, the attendance for Monday’s race was tremendous considering it being run on a weekday and starting at 11 a.m. CT. How impressive? The Monday crowd would have been a sellout or near sellout in terms of seating capacity at nine speedways (Auto Club Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kansas Speedway, Martinsville Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway and Pocono Raceway) that play host to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. The total also would have been approximately 10,200 more than capacity at the new, and venerable, Cowboys Stadium. More ...

Bad publicity good for Korean GP?  Korean GP boss Yung Cho-Chung believes the recent negative press surrounding the race has helped spark interest.

Track designer Hermann Tilke was last week forced to deny a reported comment expressing his doubts the venue would be built on time.

En route to last weekend's Chinese Grand Prix, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone was given a guided tour of the facilities as they stand, and was delighted with progress.

Yung, CEO and president of race organizers KAVO, is adamant the inaugural event will go ahead as planned on October 22-24, with the circuit now 79% complete. More ...

Heidfeld, Glock, came close to DTM race seats  (GMM) A couple of formula one drivers came within a cloud of volcanic ash of racing in this weekend's season opener of the 2010 DTM championship.

Because Mercedes' Paul di Resta and Gary Paffett were delayed in Shanghai due to the ongoing European air travel disruptions, the German marque feared the pair might not be back to drive at Hockenheim.

Mercedes' F1 reserve driver Nick Heidfeld, who was among the first to leave China, and his German countryman Timo Glock, were lined up as potential replacements. More ...

Ecclestone says Schumacher criticism not fair  (GMM)  Bernie Ecclestone has defended Michael Schumacher amid criticism of the seven time world champion's lackluster return to formula one.

The 41-year-old German's comeback with a three-year deal at Mercedes was the talk of the pre-season.

But his new form hit a low in China last weekend, when he was trounced by his teammate Nico Rosberg in qualifying before finishing a minute down at the finish in the sort of slippery conditions in which previously he would have thrived.

F1 chief executive Ecclestone said the criticism of his performance so far is not justified.

"Anybody who criticizes Michael is wrong.  He deserves better," the Briton said in a joint interview with Mercedes' Norbert Haug.

Haug agreed: "No, for sure he doesn't deserve that." More ...

Alguersuari back in Europe after 50 hour voyage
(GMM)  It took them nearly 50 hours, but F1 drivers including Jaime Alguersuari and Mark Webber are now back home.

Toro Rosso's Alguersuari, who travelled with Virgin test driver and countryman Andy Soucek, lost count of how many times they landed at airports to change plane and destination.

"We feel like we've been around the whole world," the Spaniard told the EFE news agency.  Mark Webber's return to his UK home took him 44 hours.

The F1 cars could soon begin their journey back to Europe, with McLaren confirming they are "likely to be freighted to Bilbao within the next 24 hours".

Many of the sport's personnel are not so lucky.  Williams' PR Claire Williams, the daughter of Sir Frank Williams, has been told by British Airways in Hong Kong that there may be no flights until May 5.

Sepang circuit in need of repairs
Sepang Pit Lane
Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia’s 12-year-old Formula One venue is in need of “a major overhaul and refurbishment” to the tune of 180 million ringgit ($56 million), circuit boss Razlan Razali said on Tuesday.

Sepang is a favorite among many drivers and the track, which features several high-speed corners and two long straights connected by wide hairpins, is considered one of Hermann Tilke’s most interesting designs.

However, the circuit is starting to show its age.

“Unfortunately, after three to four years, the track was not very well-maintained,” said Razlan, the chief executive of Sepang International Circuit. “There are areas of the grandstand and the paddock where it leaks during a storm. We experience power trips and mechanical and electrical woes. We need a major overhaul and refurbishment.” More ...

Luca Montezemolo resigns
Luca di Montezemolo
Fiat SpA Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo is resigning his position, the automaker announced in Turin, Italy, today.  Vice Chairman John Elkann, a great-great-grandson of Giovanni Agnelli, who helped found Fiat in 1899, is expected to move into the top position.

Montezemolo has been chairman since 2004 and he steps down a day before Fiat is to present its five-year business and product plan as the automaker continues to work with partner Chrysler Group LLC.

Montezemolo will remain on the board and continue as chairman of Ferrari, one of Fiat's brands. The 62-year-old started his career with Ferrari in 1973 as manager of the Formula One racing team.

In a press conference in Italy today, Montezemolo explained that the reason for his resignation "was that he had completed the assignment given to him by the core shareholder in May 2004," the automaker said in a statement.

F-Ducts - how they work  Racecar Engineering had a great article on the famous F-Ducts in F1 right now, that have a major impact on the workings of the rear wing, and were the focus of some pre-season controversy when McLaren debuted their innovation, now being copied by all the other teams.
When McLaren's F-Duct system first appeared in pre-season testing it was hailed by many as a true stroke of genius, a classic example of out-thinking the regulations. With the basic idea being that the driver is able to alter the airflow over the rear wing, without infringing regulation 3.15 (below), and in doing so gain a speed advantage on straights.

3.15 Aerodynamic influence : With the exception of the cover
described in Article 6.5.2 (when used in the pit lane), the driver
adjustable bodywork described in Article 3.18 and the ducts described in
Article 11.4, any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic
performance :

*Must comply with the rules relating to bodywork
*Must be rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car (rigidly secured means not having any degree of freedom)
*Must remain immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car.

This speed advantage appears to have given the team the upper hand at the Shanghai circuit, Racecar decided to investigate the theory behind the new system.

NASCAR Wrestling With Identity Crisis Amid Challenging Economy  NASCAR is "wrestling with an identity crisis," as it is unclear if the sport can "appeal to both the chardonnay corporate crowd whose trackside condos at fancy new circuits fueled NASCAR's recent growth and the diehards whose unabashed passion for racin' and wreckin' built stock-car racing in the first place.". Most sports "would love to have NASCAR's problems," as it "still routinely draws more than 100,000 fans for races." But '09 attendance fell around 10%, and empty seats "have pockmarked this year's races in Atlanta; Fontana, Calif.; and even venerable Bristol, which saw its 55-race sellout streak, dating to 1982, end in March." Since '05, average viewership of Sprint Cup races on network television "has fallen a remarkable 25%." The economic downturn "has hit hard" for NASCAR, as corporate sponsorship "has tailed off, car manufacturers have pared support, and a chunk of NASCAR's blue collar fan base can no longer afford a weekend at the track." But perhaps "worse than the bad economy, NASCAR has managed to make auto racing a little boring." The "feuding, aggressive drivers who gave NASCAR its personality seem to have lost their edge, blanded by their loyalty to corporate sponsors and by NASCAR's not unreasonable focus on safety." Driver Clint Bowyer: "I've got Cheerios for a sponsor. I have children at home who are buying our products in the stores and watching us race. I can't go out and act like an idiot on the racetrack." Gregory notes NASCAR also is "clearly suffering from Johnson fatigue," as driver Jimmie Johnson has won four consecutive Sprint Cup Championships. Meanwhile, NASCAR Chair & CEO Brian France indicated that NASCAR is "considering changing its points system, which currently rewards sustained excellence over the 36-race season rather than giving huge bonuses to drivers who win races" Time Magazine

But although Brundle argues that the "brutal and sometimes unfathomable penalties" of the recent past have now been eradicated, he thinks the stewards are now being too lenient.

The former McLaren driver, a full-time commentator for British television since retiring in 1996, wrote in his BBC column that Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton should have been penalized for their pitlane stoush in China.

"They both received a reprimand, but what does that mean?  How long does a reprimand last and how many are you allowed to collect before a real penalty?" said Brundle. More ...

Ross Brawn vows to help Schumacher  Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn has vowed to do all he can to help seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher rediscover the form that made him one of the most feared drivers in Formula One.

The 41-year-old once again failed to impress at the Chinese Grand Prix yesterday, finishing 10th after starting ninth on the grid at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Schumacher was involved in one of the more thrilling battles during the race with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton but signs that he no longer possesses the fear factor on the circuit were highlighted by Hamilton referring to the tussle only as 'exciting as racing with any other driver'. More ...

Andretti Autosport is much improved in 2010
Andretti Autosport's Hunter-Reay was dominant on Sunday
Bob Heathcote/AR1.com
A quarter of the way into the IZOD IndyCar Series season, four different teams are represented in the top five of the championship standings.

The third different and most recent race winner, Ryan Hunter-Reay, isn't surprised at all. The field is deep with road racing talent, and is equally broad in oval experience.

"That's what I love about IndyCar," said Hunter-Reay, who guided the No. 37 IZOD car to victory in the 36th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 18. "There is no series in the world that goes from a road course like we just did (Barber Motorsports Park on April 11), to a street course, to an oval. That's what it's about; you have to stay on your toes.

"The talent that you bring to it has to be diverse, and that's what I enjoy about IndyCar." More ...

Latest F1 news in brief  Antonio Liuzzi has called for the stewards to enforce penalties on cars that hold others up in qualifying, after he was knocked out of Q1 in China.

With 24 cars on the track in the first session of qualifying this year, drivers have to time their lap to perfection to ensure it is not ruined by traffic. In his exclusive column for ESPNF1, Liuzzi questioned why the stewards were not taking action against drivers who block others' fast laps, as they had done in previous seasons. More ...

Ferrari hits back at media after Massa-Alonso reports
(GMM)  Ferrari has hit back at reports that said Felipe Massa was unhappy with Fernando Alonso's pit entry overtaking move in China.

In a website entry headlined 'False polemics', the Maranello based team said the Brazilian driver's comments were "taken out of context" in an attempt by "some news outlets" to "create bad blood" between him and Alonso.

On Monday, we reported 28-year-old Massa's comments to the Brazilian media when he said he ran onto the grass to let the charging Spaniard through in order to avoid "an accident".

But the Ferrari report said the incident "won't change anything at all regarding the relationship" between the pair, with Massa and Alonso "travelling back to Europe on the same flight".

Team boss Stefano Domenicali suggested after the clash that Massa might be upset.

"I have to say that Fernando, he is a racer, and I have to say that Felipe behaved very, very well," said the Italian.

"It is not easy, and I can understand what could be his (Massa's) feeling, but this episode has not changed our philosophy and for me that is the most important thing," added Domenicali.

The veteran Italian reporter Pino Allievi said Spaniard Alonso's aggression could have been a turning point in his relationship with Massa.

"(It was) an abrupt way of reclaiming the team leadership with an unexpected and chilling maneuver," he wrote in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Typical of someone who, behind the peaceful exterior, hides the killer instinct of a champion," Allievi added. More ...

Busch dominates Nationwide race  Kyle Busch has completed an impressive drive for five -- and a long NASCAR doubleheader. Busch won his fifth consecutive Nationwide race at Texas Motor Speedway on Monday, joining two-time series champion Jack Ingram and Dale Earnhardt as the only drivers to win five consecutive races in NASCAR's second-tier series at the same track.

Only about an hour after finishing third in the rain-postponed Sprint Cup race earlier in the day -- 501 miles over 334 laps -- Busch led 153 of the 200 laps in the 300-mile Nationwide race, that was originally scheduled Saturday. More ...

Long Beach: A beautiful day for a race
A happy Ryan Hunter-Reay
Adriano Manocchia/AR1.com
It was a windless, cloudless, matchless 71-degree Sunday of bright images and ironic story lines in Long Beach's most sacred sporting event that once again cast the city in a glistening light of gladness. It was a day when the 29-year-old gentleman with the hyphenated surname, Ryan Hunter-Reay, whose six-race deal with the Andretti Autosport team expires in less than two months, methodically emerged victorious in a Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach competition that made up in ambiance and weather for the 65,000 spectators what it lacked in drama.

It was a day when the boss of the big show, Jim Michaelian, was actually caught smiling as early as 9 a.m. - "the sun is now out and there's no threat of rain" - and still was joyful six hours later when he said after Hunter-Reay had received the checkered flag, "I couldn't be more delighted how smoothly everything went and how Long Beach's greatest assets - it’s wonderful weather, its picturesque downtown and its panoramic ocean vistas - were showcased both to a national and international television audience."

Following McLaren's highly disruptive start to the 2009 season, Lapthorne joined the company a year ago, having previously acted as Chairman for British telecommunications company Cable & Wireless. However, his exit this week comes as unexpected.

"We had a full list of issues last April," the 66-year-old explained to The Times. "Ron and the team have been brilliant in working through them and, with the road car company poised for a spin-off, my job's done."

Parts confiscated from #13 and #47 teams  UPDATE The long steel pieces also were installed in an unapproved mounting location, according to the tags on the parts which were on display in the NASCAR hauler. "We'll know a lot more how NASCAR views these pans next week," said Michael Waltrip Racing Executive Vice President Cal Wells, whose organization builds the cars for Ambrose and Papis. "We'll have to wait and see. NASCAR likes to have parts submitted if you have got something new or different. I believe there was some confusion on what should or shouldn't be submitted. & In this particular case what we designed was a modular piece that holds a radiator, the pan up front and the duct work and a host of different things. There's no intent to do anything around the rules. We'll see what they decide to do." SceneDaily

04/17/10 NASCAR confiscated the lower radiator pans from Max Papis' #13 Toyota and Marcos Ambrose's #47 Toyota during post-qualifying Sprint Cup Series inspection. The pans are considered "unapproved ballast weight mounting" according to Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby and is in violation of NASCAR Rule 20-2.3 (added car weight). Darby said the violation could carry a penalty. The piece confiscated on the #13 Toyota was 45.2-pounds, while the #47 Toyota's pan weighed 25.7 pounds. One crew chief who was observing the steel pieces in the NASCAR hauler after they were confiscated said the pans "should weigh a couple of pounds at best" and be composed of one-eighth inch aluminum. Frank Kerr, crew chief of the #47 Toyota said it was the same radiator pan the team has used all season. "We asked the inspectors when we first put it on the car at California if it was 'OK' and they said it was 'on the edge, but OK.' There hasn't been any question about the piece until now." FoxSports

Massa unhappy with Alonso after pit entry clash
(GMM)  Felipe Massa was not happy with his Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso in the wake of Sunday's Chinese grand prix.

With Alonso facing the prospect of queuing in the pitlane for service behind the sister Ferrari, he overtook the Brazilian on the pit entry road, forcing Massa to take avoiding action on the grass.

Stefano Domenicali said afterwards that he only saw the incident later in a video replay, but Italian reports say the team's boss threw his hands into the air when he saw the pass on the pitwall live.

The Italian said it had been "just a racing incident", and played down suggestions of "problems" between the Latin pair.

But Brazilian reports said Massa was visibly upset with Alonso as they emerged from their cars in parc ferme, and reportedly only raised his eyebrows before refusing to comment when asked if he thought the Spaniard's move was rude.

And he told Brazil's Globo: "Alonso put his car next to mine and, when I saw him, I knew that we could have an accident.  So I thought about the team and it made me lose more than three places.

"Of course I'll talk to him," Massa, 28, added.

Alonso, now three places ahead of former title leader Massa in the drivers' standings, played down the incident.

"If he was not my teammate, there wouldn't be so much talk about it and for me it was a normal move and it definitely won't compromise our relationship," he said. More ...

The Samsung Mobile 500 will be broadcast live on FOX while the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 will be shown live on ESPN2

04/18/10 Rain will delay the start of the Samsung Mobile 500 today at Texas Motor Speedway. It was raining 30 minutes before the scheduled 3:16 p.m. EDT (2:16 p.m. Central) start, and it likely will take nearly three hours to dry the track because of the cool conditions.

The delay could put in jeopardy the NASCAR Nationwide Series O’Reilly Auto Parts 300, which is scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT following the Cup event. The National Weather Service predicts a 45 percent chance of rain today, decreasing to 30 percent after 7 p.m. EDT.  The priority today would be to get the Sprint Cup race completed.

Hinchcliffe takes first GPLB Indy Lights win
James Hinchcliffe
James Hinchcliffe had some fancy new shoes with the word "stop" and "go" on the left and right foot respectively. It seemed he only needed the right foot today though as he won the Indy Lights race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, essentially unchallenged.

Hinchcliffe took the early lead and was barely challenged at the start, with all kind of shuffling and dicing going on behind him, including an amazing rear-snap/slide by Junior Straus that he caught and brought a loud collective "Ooooh" to the crowd, with a superhuman save, and still making the turn-in for turn one, and getting by Tonis Kasemets a couple of turns later.

Tonis is putting in a strong performance this weekend, having never ever caught the scent of an Indy Lights car.

Eng edges out Palmer in race two

It was almost a perfect weekend for Palmer, who instead had to settle for victory in the opening race and second in race two.
