Acura Facing Stiff Competition In IMSA Prototype Class
The first three races of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship have reinforced one thing about racing in the Prototype class: competition is really tough.
Heading into its debut season in the WeatherTech Championship at the beginning of this year, expectations for the two-car Acura Team Penske program and the new ARX-05 Daytona Prototype international (DPi) race cars were high. And with good reason.

Newgarden won in the rain at Barber but hardly anyone saw it - on both Sunday (first 22 laps) or Monday's finale
Final TV ratings from last weekend. NBCSN delivered IndyCar another home run with a rating so low they don't bother reporting it - when it gets less than 300,000 viewers we assume they equate it to a test pattern. The NBCSN broadcast personnel always do a good job, but hardly any sports fans watch NBCSN so the ratings will always be minuscule, sending sponsors running for the exits. The new IndyCar TV contract should have gone to ABC/ESPN with ABC/ESPN hiring the broadcast team away from NBCSN. That would have been the best scenario for IndyCar.
NASCAR Richmond TV rating (Update) UPDATE The final ratings are in. 3.03 million people watched Saturday night’s NASCAR Cup race race, down 31% from the 4.4 million last year and down 43% from the 5.4 million in 2016.
04/23/18 The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Toyota Owners 400 from Richmond Saturday night garnered a 1.7 overnight TV rating on FOX, down 37% from last year's 2.7 overnight and down 45% 2016's 3.1 rating. The NASCAR tailspin appears to be accelerating.
Amazon will now deliver packages to GM vehicle owners
Amazon packages can now be delivered to more than 7 million Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles
Starting today, more than seven million owners of eligible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in the United States can enjoy the convenience of having Amazon packages delivered inside their vehicle using Amazon Key. In-Car Delivery comes at no extra cost for Amazon Prime members with an active OnStar account and is available in 37 U.S. cities and surrounding areas, with more cities to follow.
“Partnering with Amazon to leverage our embedded in-vehicle connectivity gives Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac owners the option to conveniently receive deliveries inside their vehicle parked at home, work or near other locations in their Amazon address book,” said Alan Batey, President, General Motors North America. “This is another example of how we provide customers with technologies that add value and enhance the ownership experience.”
Driving an IndyCar in the rain is very very difficult
With NASCAR's popularity waning, perhaps we will see more NASCAR journalists report on IndyCar races. Christian Koelle of Frontstretch writes:
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to cover the Verizon IndyCar Series in Birmingham, Alabama. For roughly 13 years, I have attended and covered nothing but NASCAR racing so it was definitely a different experience.
Then along came Mother Nature to intervene and add an extra level of unfamiliar territory I had never seen before, at least in person.

'What They're Saying' from Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama postponement
Josef Newgarden in good position to win again at Barber
JOSEF NEWGARDEN (No. 1 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, 2017 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama winner, 2018 pole winner): "It's tough because we have so many people that come out here to watch us. We want to put on a good race. We want to put on a show. So calling the race, running around behind the pace car not running, it's tough, it's tough to do that. But I think it was the right thing in the end. When we started the race, the conditions were OK. You could run at that level of rain. Then, it intensified right before that first caution. I think when the caution came out, it got to a point where it was just too much.

Persistent rain showers today at Barber Motorsports Park forced Verizon IndyCar Series officials to postpone today’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama following the completion of 22 of a scheduled 90-laps. The race is scheduled to resume tomorrow at 12 p.m. EDT.
The race ran for 22 laps, including two red-flag periods but the conditions were just too bad to restart the race a third time. Several drivers spun in the wet conditions, and Will Power damaged his car when he aquaplaned in the pit straight and spun into the inside pit wall.
Young Mexican Patricio “Pato” O’Ward was in a class by himself this morning for Andretti Autosport, making light of treacherous conditions as he swept to victory in the Mazda Grand Prix of Alabama Presented by Cooper Tires.
Only Victor Franzoni, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, aboard Juncos Racing’s Soul Red Dallara-Mazda IL-15, was able to keep O’Ward in his sights. Last year’s winner of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires finished a strong second, 5.8325 seconds adrift after 30 laps around the tricky Barber Motorsports Park road course. Colton Herta finished a distant third for Andretti Steinbrenner Racing.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Parker Thompson displayed peerless form this afternoon in the first of two races that will comprise this weekend’s Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Alabama Presented by Cooper Tires at Barber Motorsports Park. Rookie Jordan King put up some very respectable times on Friday
Saturday has dawned sunny and cool here at Barber Motorsports Park in the rolling hills just east of Birmingham, Alabama. The comment up and down the paddock is why can't the weather be like this tomorrow. It is an absolutely gorgeous day as the sound of internal combustion engine explosions resonate out the exhaust pipes and echo off the tall trees surrounding the circuit.
It truly is the 'Augusta; of IndyCar and yet the local media largely ignores this event. No front page headlines and very few stories. It's the best kept secret in motorsports here in Alabama. I guess if it isn't Talladega (just east of here) or Auburn footballs, they don't care.
On tap this morning is the third practice session for the IndyCars at 10:50 am Central Time, as well as Pro Mazda and Indy Lights qualifying.

The pair, as they did yesterday, went toe to toe for the best part of an hour and a half with the young tyro prevailing in the first of two 250km races this weekend.
