Telitz wins exciting U.S. F2000 race
From left, Franzoni, Telitz and Eidson
Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing's Aaron Telitz passed both Jacob Eidson and Victor Franzoni in the closing laps to win today's Cooper Tires U.S. F2000 Powered by Mazda race at Barber Motorsports Park. It was the second career U.S. F2000 win for the Wisconsin native and first of 2015.

Franzoni was able to get ahead of pole sitter Nico Jamin, who stalled in a gravel trap after the start. Franzoni would then lead 18 of the 20 laps with Eidson and Telitz in hot pursuit.

IndyCar update from Barber
Indy Lights qualifying ran under cloudy conditions with rain threatening the entire time.  It was sunny early this afternoon with clouds moved in. The forecast still looks like rain for Saturday.

So it was pretty quiet here today with no IndyCar activity except for technical inspection of the cars.

A CFH racing team member told me that there is a Chevrolet part that is supposed to be attached to the side pod but because one of the Chevy teams does not have the part, no team will be running this part.  And of course, no winglets (Rabbit ears) or a replacement for the winglet this weekend. We suspect we won't see it back on the cars at all - too fragile. Lucille Dust reporting from Barber

Pigot wins Indy Lights pole
Spencer Pigot

After 40 minutes of almost constant shuffling of positions at the top of the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires pack, Spencer Pigot and Juncos Racing claimed the pole position for the first of two races that will comprise this weekend's Legacy Indy Lights 100 at Barber Motorsports Park.

The honor came as some kind of redemption for Pigot, who won last year's Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, along with a MAZDASPEED scholarship to graduate into Indy Lights, and seemed to have the pole within his grasp one week ago on the streets of Long Beach, only to be edged in the dying moments by Jack Harvey.

Horner: We're going to need eight or nine engines (lemon Renaults)
Sebastian Vettel smiles every time he's reminded he no longer has a lemon Renault engine
Red Bull's Christian Horner reckons both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat will need around nine engines if they're to go a season without facing a penalty.

Currently Ricciardo has used three engines and will use his fourth at the Spanish Grand Prix in just over two weeks time. Meanwhile Kvyat has enjoyed better reliability and is on his second.

Each driver is allowed just four complete power units per season - though this looks likely to increase to five - before they incur a 10-place grid penalty for each new unit.

(GMM)  Force India has come up with a proposal to spice up formula one.

Sporting director Otmar Szafnauer thinks the races would be more exciting if more of Pirelli's four compounds are being used throughout the field.

Currently, the F1 tire supplier selects two compounds to take to each race.

"Pirelli has four different compounds in its range," Szafnauer told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

France says NASCAR open to Chase spot for Busch
Kyle Busch
Kyle Busch
NASCAR chairman Brian France isn't sure if Kyle Busch will be granted a waiver to be part of the championship chase when he returns from injury, but said Thursday the sanctioning body would like to "accommodate" him. He'll miss his ninth race this weekend at Richmond International Raceway, but has indicated he'll return to racing this season.

The only way he'd be eligible to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship is if NASCAR grants him a waiver, and he wins a race that would qualify him for the 16-driver field. He'd also have to be inside the top 30 in points. Those are the rules under a Chase system France altered last year. It gives him more flexibility to grant exemptions to drivers who miss races.

Senna's Toleman-Hart up for sale for over $1 million
Senna's 1984 Toleman Hart
The Monaco Grand Prix, 1984. Rain so heavy that the street circuit has more in common with a water park than a race track. Young Brazilian prodigy, Ayrton Senna - taking part in his first season of Formula One and his first street race - starts a lowly 13th on the grid, in a Toleman-Hart.

The Toleman-Hart is a good race car, but it's up against formidable opposition - McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, Renault, Williams, Brabham, Ligier and illustrious others. And while Senna's talents are becoming more defined with each race, today he’s trailing the big guns of F1 - Prost, Lauda, Mansell, Piquet, Arnoux, Tambay, and Rosberg, to name but a few.

Darby leaving NASCAR (Update)
UPDATE John Darby won't spend a lot of time talking about the details of his departure from NASCAR. Yes, he's leaving. But the hows and the whys are not something to be talked about as much as his three decades in the sport. Darby had served as the Sprint Cup Series director for 12 years before being replaced by Richard Buck prior to the 2014 season. A former racer before becoming a track official in Rockford, Illinois, Darby spent more than 25 years working for NASCAR and was the director of what is now the Xfinity Series from 1999-2001 prior to his promotion to run the sport's top series.

Calling himself a "blessed individual," Darby is in his final days at NASCAR with no job on the horizon. "I think I'm going to take a month and sit on a beach and figure out what I really want to do next," the 59-year-old said in a phone interview Wednesday. So was he fired? Was it one of those mutual "parting of the ways" or what?

Obama fails on promise
President Barack Obama missed the key ingredient needed to make electric cars mainstream
President Barack Obama missed the key ingredient needed to make electric cars mainstream
President Barack Obama promised to put a million more hybrid and electric cars on the road during his tenure, but new research shows drivers are trading them in to buy sports utility vehicles (SUVs). So far, Obama is still more than 800,000 electric cars short of meeting his 2015 goal.

Edmunds notes that when gas prices were $4.67 per gallon in October 2012 it would take five 5 years to make up the price difference between 'a Toyota Camry LE Hybrid ($28,230) and a Toyota Camry LE ($24,460)."

Scott Dixon passes Bobby Unser for 5th
A humble Scott Dixon has paid tribute to his Target Chip Ganassi crew after moving into a clear fifth on the all-time IndyCar win tally at the weekend.

The 34-year-old Kiwi broke a career Long Beach Grand Prix duck, defeating Team Penske stars Helio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya and Simon Pagenaud to record his first win of the season.

The victory was his 36th success across CART and IndyCar Series competition, drawing one clear of the legendary Bobby Unser.

Only AJ Foyt (67), Mario Andretti (52), Michael Andretti (42) and Al Unser Sr (39) are placed higher on the official win tally, which includes all championship races from AAA, USAC, CART, Champ Car and IndyCar from 1905 to present.
