Afternoon update from Barber (Update) UPDATE
It appears, Firestone will introduce an improved rain tire beginning at Toronto.
Quick update here from Barber.

IndyCar moving up the start of today's qualifying session was a good move from the perspective that it did allow them to avoid the rainy weather, which started in earnest shortly after Helio Castroneves won pole. Although, it should be noted that both Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud said they wished it had rained for the Firestone Fast 6, as they believe their chances to win pole would have been better.

Speaking of rain tires, Firestone is going to change the compound of the wet tires to make them softer. This will apparently occur without changing the thread pattern, rather by making the tires 'grippier'.

Hamlin's victory was the 100th for Toyota in the NXS since joining the series in 2007. The Virginia native started from the pole and led 248 laps (of 250) en route to the historic victory for Toyota.

Saturday morning update from Barber (Update)
Rodolfo Gonzalez
UPDATE
Rodolfo Gonzalez's journey to the Verizon IndyCar Series was "a little bit longer than I expected," though the race craft gained along the way should prove invaluable when he debuts in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

"From when I was little I had two aims - either try to get to Formula One or IndyCar," said Gonzalez, the native Venezuelan who will drive the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda. "When I first went to Europe I was 10, 11 years old and we were living in a small trailer in England crossing the country racing go-karts.

"Whenever I won a race or had a podium, my prize from my father was to go to a little pub near where we were staying and have a cheeseburger, and they always had the (Indy car) races on TV. We would turn up after driving four or five hours after racing and have a cheeseburger and the Indy car race would be on TV.

Toto Wolff fails to realize he's helping destroy F1
Toto Wolff fails to realize that his engine technology is destroying F1 as a sport
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff doesn't believe the current formula of F1 racing has 'failed' despite the prospect of earlier-than-planned tweaks being introduced to improve the show.

The current generation of V6 hybrid power units have been praised for their technological advancements and relevance to road car gains, but have been criticized for the expense of development - which has in turn filtered down to smaller, customer teams - and for detracting from 'the show'.

Indeed, F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his particular dissatisfaction with the current format and has pushed for a return to V8 engines generating a more 'marketable' - and noisier - 1000bhp.

F1 engine politics is destroying the sport
There is much talk going on at the moment in F1 circles about engine regulations for the future, with a suggestion that there might be a compromise with different engines being used by different teams in 2017. This would mean a revival of the old pre-2014 normally-aspirated V8 engines, with their KERS systems, for the smaller teams, while the bigger teams would go on using the newer and more interesting V6 hybrid turbos. Getting such a change through the decision-making process would not be easy because the engine manufacturers are not going to agree to anything that would lead to them being beaten by older engines, but there is no doubt that this could be a way to provide the struggling small teams with cheaper engines. (AR1.com addresses the real problem with F1 in this article)

Richmond adds more security near catchfence
Last year a NASCAR 'Bubba' decided he was going to sit on top of the catch-fence and watch the race
Last year a NASCAR 'Bubba' decided he was going to sit on top of the catchfence and watch the race

Richmond International Raceway officials have added metal barriers and more security personnel in an attempt to avoid a repeat of last fall's fence climber. A spectator disrupted last September's Sprint Cup race at the 0.75-mile track by climbing atop the catchfence separating the main grandstand from the track.

Track president Dennis Bickmeier told USA TODAY Sports that "bike racks," movable metal barriers, have been placed along the track concourse in front of the fence from end to end to keep fans away from the area.

Additionally, Bickmeier said more security officers - he didn't provide a number - will work the fence area during on-track activity to guard against fans approaching the fence. Bickmeier also said new "No Trespassing" signs have been posted in the area. USA Today

Hamlin wins Xfinity race in Richmond
Hamlin celebrates his dominant win
Hamlin celebrates his dominant win
Domination must be contagious.

Six days after Joey Logano led all 300 laps in a NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Bristol, Denny Hamlin led 248 of 250 circuits in winning Friday night’s ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

The only two laps that spoiled a Hamlin no-hitter were Brian Scott’s dive bomb off Turn 4 to lead Lap 154 by inches and Elliott Sadler’s contrarian fuel strategy, which allowed him to lead Lap 226 during a cycle of green-flag pit stops before Hamlin, on fresh tires, roared back past him on Lap 227.

Manor 'not worthy of F1' - Villeneuve
Villeneuve says Manor Marussia should be a GP2 team
(GMM) Jacques Villeneuve has joined Bernie Ecclestone in admitting his opposition to the Manor team.

In Bahrain last week, when asked if he is happy the former Marussia team resurrected itself over the winter, F1 supremo Ecclestone admitted: "Not particularly."

Now Villeneuve, the world champion of 1997, has admitted he also doubts Manor belongs at the pinnacle of motor sport.

"No, of course not," he told the Spanish sports daily AS, "when their car is five seconds off the pace.

"This team is not worthy of F1. It is better for them to be in GP2 or the (Formula Renault 3.5) world series and maybe they could even do well.

Honda move may have blown Alonso's career - Villeneuve
Not renewed by Ferrari after they signed Vettel (was not his choice to leave according to AR1 sources), and with Hamilton at Mercedes, Alonso was forced to go with a back marker team that could afford him - McLaren Honda
(GMM) Fernando Alonso might have blown his chance of ever winning a third title by switching to McLaren-Honda this year.

That is the claim of 1997 world champion, who said Spaniard Alonso's "early years at Ferrari" was the best driving he has ever seen in formula one.

But he lost patience with the Italian team last year, and is now trailing the field with the burgeoning McLaren-Honda project.

"Leaving Ferrari was clearly a mistake," French Canadian Villeneuve told the Spanish sports daily AS.

"He could have spent three or four more years with them and then retired or gone to McLaren if he wanted to win with them as he did in 2007," he said.
