Repsol Honda Team heads to Jerez wounded
Marquez won Jerez in 2014
After a difficult start to the 2015 season, this week MotoGP commences its European leg at the GP of Spain in Jerez.

The team were hoping to be boosted by the return of Dani Pedrosa, who underwent surgery after the Qatar GP and missed Austin and Argentina GPs. In the operation, performed on the 3rd April, doctors completely removed the layer of fascia - the casing around the muscle that gives it form and shape - which was causing problems for Dani. After three weeks of recovery Dani is feeling an improvement but together with doctors has decided to rest until Le Mans - on 17th May - to give his arm more time to heal. Hiroshi Aoyama will replace Dani for the third race in a row.

NASCAR In Advanced Talks With DraftKings for new video game
NASCAR is in advanced negotiations with DraftKings to join the daily fantasy sports operator's slate of games, and a deal could be announced in the next few days, according to industry sources. Financial or structural terms of the pending partnership are not yet known.

But sources said the sanctioning body over the last several months has explored an entry into daily fantasy and talked with several parties before undertaking more serious talks with the Boston-based DraftKings. Officials for NASCAR and DraftKings declined comment. Among the details still likely unfinished in the DraftKings deal is the level of revenue sharing between individual race teams and NASCAR.

Silverstone boss: F1 is becoming a boring procession
In F1 today, the drivers should not be up on the podium, the engineers who designed the car should be. F1 is no longer a sport, it's an engineering exercise. Engineering is not a sport.
Note:
These opinions mimic those of AR1.com President Mark Cipolloni who recently penned
The Fundamental Problem with F1 and IndyCar today, which talks about the need to strip away much of the technology and put the 'sport' back in racing.  The heroes of the sport are now the engineers, not the driver. Lewis Hamilton in a Marussia Manor would run next-to-last and his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg dead last.

Though ticket sales for July's British Grand Prix already look set to break all records, mainly thanks to some canny deals offered to race fans, Silverstone managing director Patrick Allen fears that the sport is losing its way and in time the historic circuit could become an endangered species.

"If I can predict, before I get out of bed, that Lewis will win by four seconds, followed by Rosberg, Vettel, Raikkonen, Bottas and Massa, and that's every race, then the product isn't good enough," he said, according to the Guardian.

The 2016 F1 season will kick off April 3rd
Drivers next year won't be posing for their opening of the season photo shoot until a whole month later
Announcing the move Australian GP organizers said the April 3rd date was to "condense the season, which finishes in November 2016".

Only once before has the Australian Grand Prix been held in April, that was in 2006, when the event was moved to avoid a clash with the Commonwealth Games. That year the race took place on April 2, the third round of the season.

The last time the season got underway in April was 1988, when Brazil hosted the opening race, which was won by Alain Prost, thereby kick-starting a season which would see McLaren win all but one race.

McLaren vows to stay independent as it pushes to boost sales
McLaren plans to stay independent to take advantage of its nimbleness as it competes with other supercar makers such as Lamborghini and Ferrari.

"We're very quick to move. Our product development life cycles are very efficient," Jolyon Nash, executive director of sales and marketing, said in an interview. "In an industry like this, those are great advantages."

The automaker is famed for its Formula One racing team and is one of the few global luxury auto brands that is not part of a larger group, which provides financial resources and helps lower costs. Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche are owned by Europe's largest automaker Volkswagen Group, while Fiat Chrysler Automobiles controls Ferrari and Maserati.

Mosley proposes F1 budget cap with rules freedom
Max Mosley
(GMM)  Max Mosley has urged F1 teams to rethink the idea of a budget cap -- with an added twist.

In 2015, the issue of spiraling and unmanageable costs is high on the agenda, and not just following the collapse of Caterham and Marussia.

Three bigger teams - Force India, Lotus and Sauber - reportedly only made it to the Melbourne grid when Bernie Ecclestone fast-forwarded some of their due income.

Fundamental problem with F1 and IndyCar (Update) UPDATE A reader writes,

Dear AR1:

I enjoyed Mark Cipolloni's recent article, The Fundamental Problem with F1 and IndyCar Today.

Here are a few suggestions I have for IndyCar at least bullet-point style:

  • Consider the use of production-based engines with US available stock blocks
  • blocks would have base heads with certain parts of engine free for development and rev limits set quite high
  • allow turbo for smaller engines and natural big ones but bhp to be 800plus. This will allow tuners to develop almost any manufacturer engines.

France says NASCAR open to shorter races
Are shorter races on the horizon for NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series? NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France was asked about NASCAR's comfort with 500-mile events and the length of time it takes to complete those races during an open question-and-answer session with the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) last week.

"I think generally speaking, we want to see shorter events... not in every circumstance," France told the group, "... It's no secret that attention spans, especially with the millennial fans, are changing, and we all know that. But what we like about it from our standpoint is it makes the actual racing event better because there's no lull in between the beginning and the end, or there's a lot smaller lull, so teams have to compete."

Big day for Rising Star Racing at Barber
Josef Newgarden celebrates his first career win.
Birmingham, Ala. (26 April 2015) - The boom of the confetti guns surrounding Josef Newgarden in victory lane signaled the close of an incredibly successful day of racing for Rising Star Racing on Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park.

Neil Alberico opened the day with a big win in Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tires competition to take his third victory of the season and grow his lead in the championship.

A few hours later, it was a similar sight as Spencer Pigot scored his second Indy Lights win of the weekend to grab the championship points lead after breaking through to take his first win in the category in Race 1 on Saturday.

And to close out the day, young Newgarden pushed his No. 67 CFH Racing Hartman Oil Dallara/Chevy to his first-ever Verizon IndyCar Series victory on to score the third Rising Star Racing victory of the day.

Rising Star Racing was formed in 2014 with dual goals: to help further the careers of talented and deserving young open-wheel drivers and create corporate sponsorship opportunities to support those drivers into the future.  Sunday's results were an excellent demonstration of what can happen when talent meets opportunity.

Michael Waltrip says David Ragan not yet a done deal for MWR
David Ragan
David Ragan
Michael Waltrip told FOXSports.com Friday that no deal has been finalized yet that would allow Michael Waltrip Racing to hire David Ragan to drive the team’s No. 55 Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starting next month.

A rash of injuries and illnesses has gotten the traditional NASCAR "Silly Season" of driver-team swaps off to an early start this year.

Ragan began the 2015 campaign with Front Row Motorsports, but since the second race of the season has filled in behind the wheel of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. That's because the car's regular driver, Kyle Busch, has been sidelined with a compound fracture of the lower right leg and a mid-foot fracture of the left foot, both suffered in a crash in the season-opening NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Boles reaching out to community
Doug Boles making the right moves, but must do more
Congratulations to Doug Boles, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for being pro-active and getting out of his office to tour Indiana and speak to various community and business groups as a way to boost IMS and its events (including the troubled Brickyard 400.) Tony Hulman used to do the same. This is a very good return to a very good idea and that personal relationship-building is something the Speedway very, Very, VERY much needs. And, in recent times, hasn't done. Or, at least, hasn't done enough.

I hope, leading up to the 2016 100th running of the Indy 500, Boles will expand this outreach. And instruct his staff to follow his example, across the board, in all their constituent and customer relationships.

Good afternoon from Barber
Will Power's #1 Verizon Chevy needed some repairs after the morning warm-up
The sun is finally out here a few minutes after noon at Barber MotorSports Park with the temperature about 75 degrees. Other than Will Power's brush with the cardboard Firestone signs, the morning warm-up was pretty routine. I did ask some of the Firestone engineers if Power might get some sort of bonus for the extra advertising, and they didn't seem to find the same level of humor in the comment that I did.

Also, about Power's crash: he had to replace his back wing , and his car is in tech right now as I type.

Anyway, we're hoping for a safe race today, as always.

Barber Event Summary (Update 3 - Tire selections) UPDATE #3
Sebastien Bourdais and KVSH Racing will start today's Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama on Firestone Primary 'Blacks'.
Below, are the tire selections for today's Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Nine drivers including all of the top-6 will start the race on the Firestone Alternate 'Red' tires. Sage Karam starting in the twelfth position is the lowest-placed starter on 'Reds.'

Seventh-place starter Sebastien Bourdais is the first driver on the grid using the Primary 'Blacks', which all 11 of the slowest qualifiers have opted for.

What does this all mean?

Well, we imagine that the drivers starting in the back will pit soon after the window opens for a three stop race (around lap 12 by our math) and shed the 'Blacks'. Further, the drivers at the front of the field are looking at a three-stopper as well and should the first stint stay green, expect them in around laps 26-28.

The Biggest Meatball in racing meets the Biggest Track in NASCAR
Talladega Superspeedway, known for its extraordinary one-of-a-kind racing, is now delivering a new menu item that is just as anticipated as the action on the track - "The Big One" Meatball.

Fans coming to enjoy the GEICO 500 and Winn-Dixie 300 on May 1-3, will want to sink their teeth into this "softball-sized" meatball that's being sold at concession stands in the Gadsden and O.V. Hill South Grandstands along the frontstretch. "The Big One" Meatball has a center of blended Mozzarella and Pepper Jack Cheeses mixed with smoked BBQ Pulled Pork and a little house BBQ sauce for an extra kick.

It is then covered by a layer of Ground Beef, rolled in a panko bread crumb and parmesan mix before being deep fried to a golden brown. It's topped off with a dollop of BBQ sauce and a spaghetti garnish. This mammoth meatball, like Talladega Superspeedway, is the biggest of its kind and weighs in at over 1 pound. TSS

Some teams get inspection penalties at Richmond
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Director Richard Buck sent a memo to teams this week about receiving warnings and penalties if they did not get through inspections in a timely fashion. Tommy Baldwin Racing's #7-team with driver Alex Bowman will be penalized 15 minutes of practice time next week at Talladega Superspeedway for failing to pass pre-qualifying inspection three times.

Two Sprint Cup teams received warnings for failing to get through qualifying inspection twice. Those teams were the #98 car of Phil Parsons Racing (driver Josh Wise) and the #32 car of Go Green Racing (Joey Gase). NASCAR also stated that seven Xfinity teams will be penalized 15 minutes of practice next week at Talladega for being late to pre-qualfying inspection.

Pedestrian Bridge Connects Barber Museum to Infield
IndyCar drivers join Mr. George Barber for the ribbon cutting (Photos by Joe Songer)
Verizon IndyCar Series drivers joined Barber Motorsports Park founder George Barber in a ribbon-cutting event to open a 460-foot pedestrian bridge that connects the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum with the infield of the road course.

The project follows last year's $4 million addition of the Barber Proving Grounds - a wet/dry skid pad that can accommodate events at the 830-acre facility while the 2.3-mile, 17-turn road course is in use. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, which last year was given the title of world's largest motorcycle collection by Guinness World Records, annually draws more than 250,000 visitors from around the world.

Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park was all about having a good time.

There was plenty of racing on the track--nine practice sessions, qualifying races and final races in total--but even more activity off the track.

Formula E series could race at Indy
Speedway President Doug Boles will consider any racing series, even swamp buggy racing, before considering a 400-mile IndyCar season finale at Indy
The all-electric Formula E race series has been so successful in its first year that some insiders are talking about its open-wheel race cars competing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and perhaps even filling the grid of the Indianapolis 500.

That conversation is being fueled by the similar look of Formula E and IndyCar race cars-both are designed and built by Dallara-and the quality of drivers migrating to the world's newest open-wheel series.

IndyCar team owner Michael Andretti's participation as a Formula E team owner and race promoter is revving up speculation. Andretti has quickly become one of the biggest boosters of the new series, which staged its first race in Beijing in September and its first U.S. race in Miami in March.

The Beijing debut drew 75,000 fans, and the Miami race drew more than 50,000, making it a sellout. Sponsors jumping aboard include Tag Heuer, DHL, BMW, Michelin, Renault, Julius Bar and Rimac Automobile.
