Mark Miles Tied To Ballard's Shady $32 Million Electric car lease deal
Mark Miles in hot water?
The proverbial s_ _ _ hit the fan at tonight's Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee of the Indianapolis City-County Council when the subject turned to Mayor Greg Ballard's no-bid, $32 million lease agreement with Vision Fleet, a completely untested, heretofore non-existent company until the administration entered into the corrupt, one-sided agreement with the company without consulting with the council. The criticism of the deal came from both sides of the political aisle. The harshest criticism came from Councilor Aaron Freeman (R), who lamented that a copy he obtained of the contract the city entered into with Vision Fleet was redacted more than a CIA report on the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden. Freeman crowed that even the contact person and address to which notices were be to addressed in the event of conflict was redacted.

Ford's latest recalls include first on new F-150, Edge
Ford Motor Co. launched four recalls covering 591,000 vehicles today in North America, including the first on the redesigned F-150 and Edge and the ninth on the 2014 Escape.

The largest of the four affects 518,313 vehicles: the 2013-15 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ and the 2015 Edge. It’s limited to Northern states where road salt could corrode bolts attaching the steering-gear motor. If the bolts crack, the steering system could default to manual mode, making the vehicle harder to control, particularly at low speeds, Ford said.

Gibson undergoes surgery to remove kidney stone
Tony Gibson
Tony Gibson
Two weeks ago, Tony Gibson, the crew chief to Stewart-Haas Racing's Kurt Busch, thought he had successfully passed his second kidney stone in 33 days, an ailment that kept him from working the #41's pit box during the rain-delayed race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Not so fast. Upon further review, the stone hadn't been passed. Three days after he successfully directed Busch to his first win of 2015 at Richmond, Gibson tweeted Wednesday he was undergoing "little surgery" to have the stones officially removed. NBC Sports

NASCAR tracks could lose more seats
Executives from Speedway Motorsports Inc., which owns eight tracks that host NASCAR Sprint Cup races, suggested Wednesday that they might reduce seating capacity at some of their facilities. SMI reduced seating capacity last year by 41,000 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and 17,000 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

When asked during a conference call with investor analysts about any further reductions, SMI hinted more could be made. "In my thoughts, we probably have two or three or maybe even four of our speedways where we have some extra seats, and we are working on some plans to adjust that excess capacity,'' said William Brooks, vice chairman and chief financial officer and treasurer for SMI.  NBC Sports

Jeff Gordon to drive Indy 500 pace car (Update) UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I can't believe NASCAR is allowing Jeff Gordon to drive the pace car at the Indy 500. No one involved with NASCAR at any level is allowed to even utter a word that would acknowledge that IndyCar even exists.  Is something in the works? Bill Gerken

Dear Bill, IndyCar is doing its best to give their arch-enemy NASCAR maximum exposure. Talk about kicking the existing IndyCar fan base in the teeth. Mark C

NASCAR to steal IndyCar's thunder with Jeff Gordon driving the Indy 500 Pace Car
IMS for Chevy Racing
Jeff Gordon will put a unique spin on his own Memorial Day weekend double next month, driving the pace car May 24 at the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 before competing in the Coca-Cola 600 later in the day at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Gordon and Indianapolis Motor Speedway made the announcement Wednesday during a break in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series testing.

"Indy is hallowed ground for racers like me and I couldn't be more thrilled to drive the Corvette Z06 pace car around the track that helped drive my success over the years," Gordon said in a release provided by Team Chevy. "The Indianapolis 500 is one of the most celebrated races of the year and an event I always dreamed of racing while growing up in California and in nearby Pittsboro. I've won five NASCAR races at IMS and the track will always be a special place for me, so to be able to participate in such a historic day will be something I remember for the rest of my life."

Former FIA President Urges F1 To Consider Free Rules Option
Max Mosley
Max Mosley
Former FIA President Max Mosley said that F1 teams "should be given almost total rules freedom to design their car in exchange for signing up to a budget cap," according to AUTOSPORT.

Ahead of a crunch meeting of F1's Strategy Group in May, F1 chiefs are "trying to find ways to keep both big money manufacturers and the smaller outfits happy."

Cost cut efforts in recent years have failed. The idea of a budget cap has been around for several years, but recent plans for a universal introduction were "rejected last year following opposition from the big teams."

JGR hires familiar super-sub for Kyle Busch
Boris Said
As many a NASCAR wheelman will attest -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. being amongst the foremost -- Boris Said helped them learn the abstract art of hustling -- and racing -- a lumbering 3,400-pound race car around the road courses of this nation.

A journeyman sports car racer for nearly two decades, Said became something of a NASCAR road-race hired gun before Jack Roush -- appreciative of what Said had done for him and his road-race program -- helped him set up a highly competitive satellite team back in 2006. Said ran well for the next few years before the money, as it often does, ran out and the opportunities started to vanish.

F1 'has become boring' - Glock

The 33-year-old German drove for Toyota until 2009, when the Japanese giant suddenly pulled out.

He raced on with Marussia until 2012, but was ultimately a victim of the ever-growing 'pay driver' trend.

McLaren to keep same car concept in 2016
(GMM)  Next year's McLaren car will be an "evolution" of the current MP4-30.

Last year, the famous British team finished the season just fifth best, despite having clearly the best engine in the field in the form of the Mercedes.

Behind the scenes, team boss Eric Boullier now admits, things were just not working.

"There has been a huge change in overall culture and philosophy," he said on Wednesday.

Hamilton ready for Vettel-like title run
Hamilton looking to win 4-straight titles with superior Mercedes
(GMM)  Lewis Hamilton has issued an ominous warning to his rivals.

The reigning world champion has won three of the four races so far this season, leaving his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg trailing in his wake.

Niki Lauda says the German, Rosberg, needs to hit a metaphorical 'reset' now and start his 2015 campaign afresh, but veteran Jenson Button says that is not easy to do.

"When your teammate beats you for two or three races on the trot it hurts," he said.

TORONTO, ON (April 28, 2015) – Move Motorsports Management (Canadian formula car series promoters) and Lincoln Electric Canada (manufacturers of advanced welding equipment and consumables) jointly announced today a sponsorship agreement of the F2000 Canada Championship.

"We are thrilled that Lincoln Electric has deepened their relationship with us," stated series promoter Jason Sharpe. The competitor that suffered some bad luck in the first race of the weekend but managed to overcome it and compete in the second will be awarded a Professional Fabricator's Accessory Kit valued at over $400.

As May looms, IndyCar takes center stage...for a limited time
The Indy 500 is still big, about 50% as popular as the Daytona 500, but still the biggest thing IndyCar has going for it. With boring quiet non-screaming engines, the crowds at the other events are there to enjoy the atmosphere of the event, but the racing does not make new fans because they do not leave the track 'thrilled' i.e. their socks knocked off.
Teams and drivers of the Verizon IndyCar Series will take to the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this Sunday, officially kicking off the month of May at the iconic oval.

Over the next four weeks, hundreds of thousands of fans will enter the facility for various practice days and races. The second-annual Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 9 will see the Indy cars take to the road course in the infield, with the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 scheduled for May 24.

Then, after a month of being at the forefront of motorsports Web sites and publications all over the country, IndyCar will fade from people's consciousness for another 11 months.

You see, hidden behind the pageantry and historic tradition of May at Indianapolis is a huge problem in open-wheel racing in North America.

No one cares.

IndyCar Barber TV Rating (Update) UPDATE Last year's Barber race drew 400,000 viewers so this year's 0.25 rating (300,000 viewers) represents a loss of 100,000 viewers, a 25% drop as IndyCar and its boring quiet non-screaming engines appear to be losing fans at an alarming rate now....not unlike F1. The visceral experience 'thrill' is gone.

04/27/15 The TV rating for Sunday's Grand Prix of Alabama from Barber Motorsports Park shown live at 3:30 PM on NBC Sports Network was a dismal 0.25......as the NBCSN noose around IndyCar's neck continues to tighten.

The sad part is that it was a fantastic race that hardly anyone saw. AR1 has said that all IndyCar races need to be on network TV, but the powers to be in IndyCar prefer to feed at the NBCSN money trough.

IndyCar Long Beach TV Rating (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 NBCSN earned a 0.30 U.S. rating and 368,000 viewers for year's IndyCar Series race from Long Beach, so this year was down 7%.

04/24/15 The 0.32 TV rating last Sunday for IndyCar's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on NBCSN equated to 344,000 viewers, about 1/3 of what watched the St. Petersburg season opener, which of course was on network TV (ABC).

04/20/15 IndyCar pulled a 0.32 rating Sunday on NBCSN for the Toyota GP of Long Beach. Although slightly better than last week's 0.27 for the NOLA race, given there was no Masters Golf Tournament on TV, and NASCAR was rain-delayed, the 0.32 means the noose continues to tighten.
