Penske uncertain on full-time Ambrose return
Penske and Ambrose
Roger Penske expects to see Marcos Ambrose back on track later this season, but is giving no guarantees as to when the former champion will return.

The weekend's Barbagallo event saw Penske meet face-to-face with Ambrose and the V8 Supercars team for the first time since the driver stepped down from racing duties in March.

Ambrose's fill-in Scott Pye has now completed two events aboard the #17 Ford, having taken over the seat on an indefinite basis while the team builds.

The Untold Story of Randy Lanier, Indy 500 Star and Drug Smuggler
Randy Lanier in 1984 - CART IndyCar driver
Randy Lanier in 1986 - CART IndyCar driver
On October 15, 2014 60-year old Randy Lanier stepped out of the Coleman federal penitentiary in rural Florida, a stranger to the world.

"For the last 27 years I have lived in prison cells with a Natural Death Sentence hanging over my neck like a hangman's noose," Lanier posted on his Facebook page. "Life Without Parole."

"This morning Oct 15 I walked out of federal prison a Free Man."

Free is a relative term. Lanier checked into a mandatory halfway house, where he will spend months reintegrating into society. Still, outside of the prison walls, he finds wonder everywhere he looks, quotidian things that most take for granted. The smell of fresh air, unscented by the sweat of jailhouse criminals. Squirrels playing in the trees, and the trees themselves. There were no trees in the prison where Lanier lived, and he finds profound joy just touching the bark and the moss.

Does IndyCar Really Need The Grand Prix Of Indianapolis?
Running a 2nd IndyCar race at Indy on the road course is boring and detracts from the 500 during May. The 2nd race at Indy should be a 400-miler on the oval as the season finale. The series needs another oval event.
The month of May has always been magical when it comes to IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500. The entire month is devoted to testing, tuning, and hyping one of American motorsports biggest, most prestigious staples. But with last year’s inclusion of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, held on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course, IndyCar began to overdo it.

Granted, IndyCar is more at home on road courses as opposed to ovals. But to hold a race at the same facility in the same month as the biggest race of the season takes away from the prestige of the 500. As NASCAR demonstrates, it’s one thing to hold a non-points event (Sprint Unlimited) at the same venue as their biggest event (Daytona 500) a week before. But the Grand Prix of Indianapolis is a points event and it does go towards the overall championship.

Foyt drivers Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis

Sato
TAKUMA SATO ON:
  • The circuit: “It is unique, simply as it is Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It has a long straight so we trim out the downforce level which is unique as not many other road circuits do in our calendar. And because of that, there are quite few overtaking opportunities and that’s great for racing.”
  • Why he likes it: “IMS did a good job to make it fun to drive by combining fast and technical sections together. The track layout is quite a bit different from F1 days but still one-third of the track is the same, so it reminds me of the USGP and my special memory here. It is a good feeling.” (Sato finished third in 2004).

NASCAR's reason for not throwing yellow flag on last lap at Talladega
On the final lap [of a race], NASCAR's stance is to 'let 'em play". When NASCAR Senior Vice President Steve O'Donnell joined SiriusXM NASCAR Radio he acknowledged that while Sunday's decision in the Geico 500 [at Talladega Superspeedway] was indeed "a judgment call," fans prefer to see races end under green flag conditions.

"It's going to be a judgment call," O'Donnell said. "We've stated that we're going to make every effort to try and finish a race under green conditions - that's what the fans want to see. But we have to be obviously mindful of what's occurring on the track. It's a split-second decision. I think if you go back to Daytona, where we saw a driver hit the wall at what we thought to be fairly hard and wanted to dispatch our emergency crews quickly, we elected to throw the caution. If you look at yesterday, if you saw the circumstances that played out with Carl [Edwards], when we initially saw him get loose, he was down on the apron. As we made that quick decision, it was 'ok, he's clear we can go'.

Profits down for American Honda
Honda does not seem to find any longer in North America the profits it used to make. That being said, it still managed to sell more cars here than anywhere else on the Globe in the fiscal year that has just ended.

The Japanese carmaker got its biggest revenues from mainland Asia. The operating profit in North America fell 31% to $1.67 billion in the fiscal year that ended in March, and turned North America for Honda into the second profit gainer, after Asia.  The key markets of China, India and Thailand, but not Japan, led for Honda to see an increase in the operating profit by 28%, up to $2.32 billion.
