Tan Controls Rescheduled Mazda Road to Indy Pro Mazda Race
Weiron Tan
This evening's rescheduled Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Grand Prix road course perhaps wasn't the prettiest - other than through the eyes of Malaysian Weiron Tan, who held on to score his second win of the season for Andretti Autosport and vault from sixth to third in the championship standings.

Frenchman Timothe Buret, driving for defending champion team Juncos Racing, claimed the fastest race lap en route to his second runner-up finish in the last three races. Californian Neil Alberico extended his championship lead by a few points by finishing third for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing.

Scuderia Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has underlined Ferrari's quest to get back in front of Mercedes, saying that the team expects to make a major step forward at the Spanish Grand Prix thanks to a large batch of car updates.

The Italian is certain that Ferrari hard work will continue to pay off, having already seen a major step forward compared to last year's performance.

GP of Indy: Dixon tops 2nd practice (Update)
Scott Dixon
Scott Dixon led a contingent of six Chevy drivers in the 2nd practice session for the 2nd annual GP of Indianapolis to be run this Saturday. Sebastien Bourdais and Helio Castroneves rounded out the top-5.

All six Chevy powered cars were in the 1m10s bracket.  Penske teammates Will Power and Juan Montoya were 2nd and 3rd behind Dixon.

Graham Rahal was the fastest Honda in 7th place, 0.45sec off the pace as Chevy continues to eat Honda's lunch.

Indy Second Practice Report
The Honda teams continue to be out to lunch on the road courses
In another display of Chevy power -- or at least the superiority of the Chevy teams -- Scott Dixon set the pace for the second round of practice for Saturday's Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Will Power was over 1/10 of a second behind as second-fastest.

Once again, 8 of the top 10 spots were Chevy powered, with Graham Rahal (7th) and Takuma Sato (8th) leading the Honda charge. Ten of the bottom 13 cars on the speed chart were Honda powered.

Rahal admitted that every Chevy car was faster in the trap speeds (over the Honda cars), and that the Hondas were difficult to drive. Describing a search for "drivability" he listen in envy as Will Power talked about the Chevy aero kit that was allowing drivers a very fine level of tune to suit driving styles. "You find you're sideways more than you're pointed straight."

Statement by Dan Gurney on the passing of Denise McCluggage at 88
Denise McCluggage (AutoWeek) was a true original, the way she wrote, the way she talked, the way she behaved and the way she lived her life, nothing was ordinary.

We have been friends ever since she and her great friend Phil Hill picked me up at the airport in Paris in 1958 to drive south to Le Mans together where we all were scheduled to race.  Denise was a pioneering racing lady who was not intimidated by famous men on the track, be it the Nurburgring, Sebring, Riverside or the Targa Florio.

She amused generations with her witty observations which she shared in her writings over many decades. I see her in my mind's eye laughing with old pals, Briggs, Phil, Shelby and Stirling. We were young together, we grew old together, I will miss you Denise!

GP of Indy: First Practice Report (Update) UPDATE Added photos of LED position lights on cars below.

Sebastien Bourdais edged out Will Power and Scott Dixon to lead the first IndyCar practice session for Saturday's Grand Prix of Indianapolis. The top 5 cars (8 of the top 10) are Chevy powered, with Honda powering 9 of the bottom 11. Takuma Sato was the fastest Honda for the session.

Before the session began I caught up with Josef Newgarden, who was the winner two weeks ago at Barber. He told me that the buzz has long since disappeared -- "Two weeks is a long time, and you're only as good as your last race" were the words he kept repeating, although he allowed as though he was greatly relieved with his first victory. "We've been so close and I knew it was just a matter of time."

Alonso wearing sunglasses for eye infection
Fernando Alonso
(GMM)  Eyebrows were being raised on Thursday as Fernando Alonso refused to take his dark sunglasses off during the official FIA press conference.

Earlier this week, on social media, the McLaren driver showed photographs of a stye in his eye, and then his trip to McLaren's driver simulator in Woking -- wearing dark glasses inside.

"I have to keep them on," the Spaniard said as he prepared for Thursday's media activities ahead of his home grand prix.

BHA Indy GP Notes & Quotes
Gabby Chaves
INDIANAPOLIS –The second Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis kicks off the Month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday May 9th (3:30pm ET, ABC). The 2.434-mile, 14-turn road course incorporates portions of Turns 1 and 2 and the front straight of the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval and the remainder of the circuit is within the infield, allowing for great spectator viewing.

Last year, weather played a role in qualifying. This year, the forecast calls for an 80% chance of rain on race day. Like the postal service, the BHA team will be prepared to deliver no matter what Mother Nature throws at us...

Sean Rayhall back with 8Star Motorsports for Indy Lights Indy GP
Pompano Beach, FL, May 7, 2015 - 8Star Motorsports and promising young driver Sean Rayhall are getting ready to compete in this weekend’s Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Indianapolis Grand Prix. Rayhall and 8Star initiated this Indy Lights partnership at Barber Motorsports Park, where he achieved the fastest lap and track record after only being in the Dallara IL-15 a few times. The expectations for the upcoming races are high, especially now that Rayhall has had more time to get accustomed to the 8Star machine.

Rayhall has competed in Indianapolis before while wearing 8Star orange. Last year’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Indianapolis Grand Prix was one to be remembered in many regards. The main takeaway was that Rayhall and 8Star’s pace and strategy were second to none, and the young American tallied a series of fastest laps.

LED Lights on KV Racing's Stefano Coletti's car
Zach Wenzel-NGI
Testing at Barber Motorsports Park just before the season got underway (March 16-17) saw the initial testing of a prototype version of on-board LED position lights; the LED panel was fitted to the KV Racing Technologies car of Stefano Coletti for the test. This technology has been confirmed - and we could see it for the very first time as early as May 24 at the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

The LED panels will be mounted on both sides of the car and will indicate the current position held by the car during each session or race. The equipment was received last week after the manufacturer received feedback from the series after the March try-out.

'Month of May' Beckons for Belardi Auto Racing at Indianapolis
Felix Serralles
Felix Serralles
With its race shop located just west of Indianapolis in the city of Brownsburg, Belardi Auto Racing is excited to have the opportunity to direct all of its focus on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the next month.  The Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires team will be part of this weekend's Grand Prix of Indianapolis doubleheader (May 7-9), which will put Belardi's drivers on the track's popular 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course. Just over a week later, they will return to IMS for testing ahead of the prestigious Freedom 100 on May 22.

Team driver Juan Piedrahita competed on the road course circuit last year, although that was in the old version of the Indy Lights car, while Felix Serralles has yet to sample the layout, which when run clockwise utilizes turn one and front straight of the famed oval.  Serralles is coming off a strong fourth place finish at Barber Motorsports Park two weeks ago, and maintaining the momentum he gained will be crucial as the season progresses. Both drivers are expecting solid results.

JDC MotorSports Adds Hargrove to Pro Mazda Lineup for Indy Road Course
Scott Hargrove

JDC MotorSports will add a significant weapon to its arsenal for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented Cooper Tires event this weekend (May 7-9) on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.  Last year's championship runner-up Scott Hargrove will race alongside team pilots Kyle Connery and Parker Nicklin on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn layout, as he looks to gain track time to keep his skills sharp in anticipation of his return to the Indy Lights series. JDC has also added Autobahn Country Club Pro Mazda champion Kevin Davis to the squad for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, running in the Expert category.

"We're very happy to welcome Scott back under the tent for this weekend's events and I believe that he will provide a positive tone and very useful data,” offered John Church, Team Principal. "Scott ran for us in the USF2000 and we've watched him mature into one of the best young drivers in open wheel racing.  Kyle and Parker should benefit from having Scott with us, and it's great to have Kevin under the tent as well.  We think that he'll be able to challenge for the Expert class win this weekend."
