From left, Rayhall, Harvey and Jones
The championship battle in Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires intensified massively today as Englishman Jack Harvey won his first race of the season for seven-time championship-winning team Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian in the Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

Rookie Sean Rayhall, from Winston, Ga., finished a strong second for 8Star Motorsports following a race-long battle with the Carlin pair of Ed Jones and Max Chilton on the 2.439-mile Indianapolis Grand Prix Circuit.

Fix, Andretti take Fast Five poles for Foametix Trans Am 100 at Road Atlanta
Paul Fix
Paul Fix led the way for the TA class during “Fast Five” qualifying for the Foametix Trans Am 100 at Road Atlanta, claiming pole position for tomorrow’s race with a time of 1:20.120.

This will be Fix’s first pole position of the year and should serve as a strong springboard for his Championship aspirations; as he currently sits second in the point standings to Amy Ruman.  However, during today’s qualifying session, it was Ruman who was in second, but only just.  The current points leader turned a time of 1:20.246 from behind the wheel of the No. 23 McNichols Company Chevrolet Corvette—strong enough to solidify second position for tomorrow’s race and a top of the table showdown with Fix.

Old-school unveil for No. 24 at Indy
Townsend Bell's No. 24
Lucille Dust/AR1.com
Old and new came together on Friday when Dreyer & Reinbold-Kingdom Racing unveiled the livery for its No. 24 Robert Graham Special Chevrolet for the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 alongside the bright yellow sprint car built by Floyd "Pop" Dreyer, grandfather of team principal Dennis Reinbold.

Duke Nalon drove the sprinter to the 1938 AAA Eastern Championship, one of many accomplishments for Dreyer, who constructed the car bodies of the three front-row starters for the 1931 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

"I've been coming to (IMS) since I was a little kid, so it's just fabulous to be back," said Reinbold. "It's a special deal for me in celebration of my grandfather as we tie it in to the unveiling of our 2015 car."

Miller Motorsports Park Set To Close
They built the track so large fans cannot see the cars because they are too far away, i.e. it was not fan-friendly at all. Miller Motorsports Park, home to both a 4.5-mile road course and a short-course off-road track, will close later this year. The facility, which opened in 2006, will cease operations on Oct. 31 according to a statement by the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, which owns the facility. The group has opted not to renew the lease on the land in Tooele County, thus closing the track.

The track will remain open for the remainder of the racing season. The track is scheduled to host several traveling racing tours, including MotoAmerica, the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.

Honda IndyCar teams praying for rain
Munoz in one of the 'lemon' Wirth Hondas
The Honda IndyCar teams are praying for rain for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Indianapolis, as a way to equalize things a bit.  The Wirth designed road course aero kit is a complete failure and an embarrassment for Honda who are getting their lunch eaten by Chevy teams.

In IndyCar knockout qualifying round 3 for the fastest 12 cars just ended with the top-6 advancing to the final round.  There is only one Honda car in the top 12 and they are way down in 11th position. Most people are surprised Honda has not fired them already.

GP2: Vandoorne scorches to pole in Barcelona
Stoffel Vandoorne
Stoffel Vandoorne
Stoffel Vandoorne has continued his crushing form, dominating his rivals to steal a record sixth pole in a row in scorching conditions this afternoon in Barcelona, leading almost all session long to take the top spot from Williams test driver Alex Lynn and Pierre Gasly.

The ART driver was untouchable today, stopping the clock at 1:29.273 late in the session to take pole by over four tenths, despite the best efforts of the remainder of the field. The Belgian was briefly delayed by a red flag on the first flying lap, brought out by a slowing Artem Markelov at turn 4, but the field was soon underway again and Vandoorne set the pace immediately, with Lynn closing to within a tenth as the field returned to the pits.

Pirelli denies changing tire selection philosophy
(GMM) Paul Hembery has denied reports Pirelli is shifting its focus towards softer compound choices in 2015.

When asked about claims F1's official supplier wanted to spice up races by bringing softer tires to grands prix this year, Fernando Alonso was unimpressed.

"I say that they should stay with whatever was the original plan because they could change the result of the championship," the Spaniard insisted.

Clint Bowyer talks about his home race
Clint Bowyer
CLINT BOWYER, No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
What was the experience like with the Kansas City Royals this week?

"I'm thinking go to the game, tailgate with friends in the parking lot, have a couple beers, take in a ballgame – like everybody else and enjoy the night. Oh no, I showed up and suited me up and we went and had batting practice, went to the bullpen and (Jeremy) Guthrie (pitcher, Kansas City Royals) threw some stuff at me. He threw a fastball by me and then a curveball. Man, I'm telling you, when you stand in front of that baseball it gives you a whole new appreciation for a professional level of ball like that – holy cow. Here I am, my knees are already buckled and I'm starting to get out of the way and by the time it hits the dirt it's like 12 feet away from you. It wasn't even close. Great experience, fun to see the Royals. It's been a great ride here so far and they ain't done yet."

Do you have any concerns about the new rules package here at Kansas with the corner speeds?

Harvey wins Indy Lights pole
Jack Harvey earns his second pole of 2015
With a lap of 1:15.064 seconds Schmidt Peterson Motorsports' Jack Harvey earned pole position for today's Race 1 of the Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis Presented By Cooper Tires. It was the second pole of 2015 for Harvey who also earned the first starting position at Long Beach.

Carlin's Ed Jones, who won the first three races of 2015, qualified second 0.14-seconds behind Harvey. 8StarMotorsports' Sean Rayhall was third. Carlin's Max Chilton and SPM's R.C. Enerson rounded out the top-5.

It was a disappointing session for series championship leader Spencer Pigot. The Orlando native, who dominated both races at Barber recently could only manage a sixth place effort.

The green flag for today's race is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. Harvey, who has scored four second-place finishes so far in 2015 will look to earn his first victory.

Indy Friday Grand Prix Practice Report
Helio Castroneves led a Chevrolet-dominated third practice session
In another display of Chevy power -- Wait, this is the way that all of these reports have gone? -- Helio Castroneves and Sebastien Bourdais laid down nearly identical laps to lead morning practice. Castroneves clocked 1:10:3756 in a last-minute lap, narrowly squeezing out Sebastien Bourdais by a quarter of a tenth of a second. Simon Pagenaud, Will Power, Scott Dixon, Juan Pablo Montoya and Tony Kanaan all were in the 1:10 range.

And once again, Graham Rahal lead the Honda team with the 8th fastest (Sato was 12th fastest in the 25 car field). Rahal was extremely animated as he came out of the car, and took a long while to stop wildly gesturing -- or perhaps, it wasn't wild gestures, but a rehash of how the car was handling. "Challenging" is the word is politely used -- "I won't say that it's awful." But he did say that there isn't 7/10 of a second in that car, which would've put him atop the leader board. "Maybe if we can stop the brakes from locking up, we'd pick up a tenth. But there isn't 7/10 of a second in the car."

Spanish GP: Hamilton over Vettel in 2nd practice
Vettel closing on Hamilton, but still 4/10ths off
Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of FP2 for the Spanish Grand Prix, beating Sebastian Vettel by 0.4s.

While Mercedes had been almost a second clear of the field in the opening practice session, Hamilton was pushed more closely by Vettel as Ferrari looked more competitive on the medium tire. Hamilton's time of 1:26.852 left him a little under half a second clear of Vettel, with Nico Rosberg in third but 0.75s off his teammate.

GP2 cars on par with F1 cars
Today's F1 cars with their hybrid engines are slow, expensive dogs.  They doubled the cost and ruined the sport
After the first practice session for both the GP2 cars and the F1 cars, the times are fairly similar with the top GP2 drivers faster than the bottom 15% of the F1 times.

GP2 teams spend 1/100th of what F1 teams spend, proving that all that money spent on F1 technology is a complete waste.  Not only does it take the driver out of the equation (any monkey can drive an F1 car) it really does not get you much performance gain.

GP2, with very little technology, is a true measure of driver talent - i.e. a real sport.  F1 is no longer a sport, but an engineering exercise.  Engineering is NOT a sport.

NASCAR: Johnson addresses Talladega conspiracy theory
Did Johnson let Earnhardt win to keep sponsors happy?  Probably.
After the unusual conclusion to last Sunday's GEICO 500 at Talladega – in which Dale Earnhardt Jr. led most of the final stint while the field remained in a long train behind him with no one willing to risk fanning out and making a move in case they lost the draft - social media has been rife with suggestions among fans that Earnhardt's Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson made no attempt at a pass for the lead as payback for a previous occasion in which Earnhardt had pushed him to the win.

The conspiracy theories were further stoked by the fact Johnson already had two wins and so had qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, while Earnhardt had been winless.

Appearing at a media event at Charlotte Motor Speedway to promote the upcoming Sprint All Star race and Coca-Cola 600 at the track, Johnson called the idea of a gift win for Earnhardt "ridiculous."

"Absolutely not. That's the most ridiculous thing ever," Johnson said. "I was doing everything within my power to set up a pass for the win. We had such a small group of guys in line there just wasn't any energy. I dragged the brake a few times and backed up to the cars behind me; I just got this small run off of their push. Junior was easily able to defend that."

Rahal: Honda aero kit needs improvement everywhere
The Wirth designed Honda aero package is a complete failure
Graham Rahal believes that the Honda aero package needs to be improved across the board if it is to regularly compete with rival Chevrolet on IndyCar's road and street courses this year.

Honda has struggled to match Chevy ever since the manufacturer-designed aero kits made their debut at the season-opener in St Petersburg

Rahal ended the opening day of practice for this weekend's race on the IMS road course as the quickest of the Honda-powered runners, but he was still more than 0.4 seconds off the pace, and admitted that the gap will be difficult to breach.

Spanish GP: Mercedes 1-2 waltz continues in practice 1
Nico Rosberg - Take that Ferrari - My engineers are better than your engineers
Nico Rosberg finished the first practice session for the Spanish GP in Barcelona on top, just 0.070s ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, but a comfortable 0.978s clear of Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari in third.

Unless Ferrari was sandbagging in session 1, which they have every reason to, their new upgrades still leave them a second per lap slower than Mercedes.

Kimi Raikkonen was 4th in the 2nd Ferrari.

With both Mercedes drivers close in time to each other (0.070 sec apart), and both Ferrari drivers close in time to each other (0.026 sec apart) but 1 second slower than the Mercedes, it's clear that the driver means nothing in F1.
