Pagenaud leads Thursday practice at Indy
Simon Pagenaud

Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud led a Chevrolet-dominated Thursday session in practice for the 99th Indianapolis 500. With a speed of 228.793, the Frenchman lapped the famed 2.5-mile oval just over a tenth of a second quicker than yesterday's fast man Carlos Munoz of Andretti Autosport.

The only other Honda joining Munoz in the top-10 would be teammate Marco Andretti in ninth.

Similar to yesterday, a car got airborne during practice. This time it was CFH Racing's Josef Newgarden. Luckily, the winner of the recent race at Barber Motorsport Park was checked and released from the infield care center.

Why Castroneves' car flipped over UPDATE
Rest assured that it was not that small wicker you see here in this photo that caused Helio to go airborne, but instead the air when it hit the Butt Bumpers behind the rear wheels. The Butt Bumpers act like big sails.
Before Thursday practice began at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 99th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, race No. 6 in the Verizon IndyCar Series season and arguably the most important of the bunch, Chevrolet teams were told to remove the center wicker bill that runs the length of each car’s nose.

After some computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies, Chevrolet felt the wicker might have been a partial contributor to Helio Castroneves’ flight on Wednesday afternoon that left his car unable to perform but, thankfully, not its driver, who drove a backup later in the day and placing 15th with only 12 laps in the books.

Vautier to qualify, Davison to race
Tristan Vautier
Tristan Vautier will drive the No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing Honda in qualifications May 16-17 for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race in lieu of JD Davison, who is competing in a sports car race in Canada. Vautier then will depart for Silverstone, where he'll compete in the Blancpain Endurance GT Series event on Race Day at Indianapolis.

"It is an interesting tradeoff," said Vautier, the 2011 Star Mazda and 2012 Indy Lights champion who went on to earn Verizon IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year honors in 2013 with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Vautier systematically progressed through his refresher program on the 2.5-mile oval May 14 and worked through the team's program for the six-hour session in preparation for qualifications. Davison, who will compete in his second consecutive Indy 500, recorded the fourth-fastest lap time (228.043 mph; 39.4663 seconds) in practice May 13.

Toro Rosso plays down Renault team takeover
(GMM)  Toro Rosso chief Franz Tost has played down the chances of a team takeover by Renault.

Earlier this year, at the height of Red Bull's public spat with the French carmaker, it seemed inevitable that Renault was going to either buy and rebrand the junior outfit Toro Rosso, or quit formula one altogether.

But this week, Renault's F1 chief Cyril Abiteboul played down that likelihood.

"We are living through a tough moment," said Abiteboul.  But "this marriage has all the reason in the world to last.

NASCAR issues written warnings to five teams
NASCAR announced Wednesday that #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team and #22-Joey Logano's team were among five Sprint Cup teams that received written warnings for failing inspection last weekend at Kansas Speedway. NASCAR stated that the teams of Logano, #13-Casey Mears and #27-Paul Menard received written warnings for failing pre-qualifying inspection twice.

NASCAR stated that the teams of Earnhardt and #35-Cole Whitt received written warnings for failing pre-race inspection twice. The Sprint Cup Rule Book states in section 12.5.3.1.c that if the same team receives two warnings during two consecutive events - whether a points event or not - then the team faces a P1 penalty that could include one or more of the following: Deduction of practice time, deduction of qualifying time, last choice in selecting pits, delay in order of inspection and/or other penalties.

Haas Not Ruling Out Danica Patrick Move To F1
Danica Patrick
NASCAR team co-Owner Gene Haas "has no desire to fuel speculation but neither will he rule out entirely the possibility of Danica Patrick racing for his new Formula One team next year," according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS. When asked whether the world's best-known female racer might make a sensational switch from ovals, Haas said, "If the right sponsor came along, then anything is possible."

Even as he spoke "his F1 team principal Guenther Steiner grimaced." Steiner said, "Don’t put anything in that Danica is coming to F1." Haas, who nonetheless "left no doubt" that his Stewart-Haas NASCAR driver would be given "serious consideration" if the deal was right and she wanted to do it, said, "We’ve been down that path last year."

Tobacco Company Philip Morris International Renews Ferrari F1 Sponsorship
Tobacco brands are not allowed to feature on Formula One cars.
Philip Morris Int'l Inc. "is continuing one of the quietest sponsorships in sports," according to Alex Duff of BLOOMBERG.

Ferrari Team Manager Maurizio Arrivabene said that the largest publicly traded tobacco company "has renewed its backing of the Ferrari Formula One team for three more years" even though advertising laws mean it has not displayed the Marlboro cigarette brand at a race since '07. Cigarette makers were once major sponsors in the sport, with three companies spending more than $750M on the world’s most popular auto competition in '01, "before rules banned advertising on cars."

Indianapolis 500 Wednesday practice quotes
Helio Castroneves
HELIO CASTRONEVES (No. 3 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet): "The (car) was definitely fast; we were even taking off. Not the way we would want to take off. I have to thank all the messages from the fans of encouragement, and to Team Penske to put a car together and be back out there again. The car was impressive. You can't be scared when you go out there. I didn't want to wait to run until tomorrow, and now we'll focus on Thursday and Friday."

ROGER PENSKE (Owner, Team Penske):

"I think the ability of the team in five hours to put that (back-up) car together - we had to take the engine out of one car and take a lot of the pieces off - and get out for a few laps says a lot. It looks like we're competitive; we ran 226 (mph). To me, it's a good start for tomorrow." (about the car getting airborne) "You're always concerned when a car gets backwards; it looks a little bit like NASCAR the way the thing went up and went over. You can only test so much in your simulations and in a small wind tunnel, and I think this is something good to know now because we can look at it and see what are the right things to help all the cars that are on the track."

Munoz leads Wednesday practice at IMS at over 230 MPH
Carlos Munoz
Colombian Carlos Munoz posted the best lap seen so far this week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to end an eventful day of practice at the famed 2.5-mile oval on top.

The Andretti Autosport was the first driver to break through the 230mph barrier, and put Honda on top of the timing screens for the first time this week.

“Really, we were not looking for a tow, we just made a change and said, ‘OK let’s go in the group and see if we can just cop a tow and feel the car in traffic a little bit,” said Munoz.

Wednesday at IMS - Andretti is BACK!
Carlos Munoz topped the time sheets Wednesday at IMS

Yesterday we thought we'd be writing off Andretti Autosport. A tough winter, a tougher season to date, and yesterday one car burned up while another popped an engine. But at they say, that was yesterday. Today, Andretti Autosport' Carlos Munoz topped the speed charts by some 2/10 of a second over second place Townsend Bell. Marco Andretti posted a 9th fastest speed, Ryan Hunter-Reay in 11th, and Justin Wilson in 19th. Honda officials were very happy to see Andretti Autosport back at the top of the leader charts for sure, not to mention seeing an entire day go by with nary a motor issue. (Sato was forced off of the track with an upright failure, not a motor issue.)

The day was punctuated by two incidents. In the first, Helio Castroneves had the car suddenly come around in the entrance to turn 3, backing into the wall. The car then continued backwards down the track, where it became airborne, flipping over and dropping the car on Helio's roll hoop. The car then righted itself, coming to a stop. Helio was back on the track at the end of the day with a fixed car, and was 15th fastest on the day in the tow.

Video: Helio Castroneves flip at Indy Wednesday
So much for the holes IndyCar put in the underbody to prevent cars from getting airborne. Penske driver Helio Castroneves was lucky to escape uninjured when he lost control of his Chevy in turn 3 at Indianapolis today and went airborne.

Traveling backward, the rear of the car lifted off the ground and flipped. The landing was initially upside down, with the roll hoop taking most of the impact before the car turned over on its wheels.

"The car (is) good and I am very blessed," Castroneves said in a statement released by Team Penske. "Unfortunately I still do not understand what happened. I got loose in turn one and spun out.

Wednesday IMS Practice Report #1 (Update) UPDATE ROGER PENSKE (Owner, Team Penske): (On driver Helio Castroneves' crash): "It looks like the car got backwards, air got underneath it and the car flipped. He's just resting in there. Not an issue. No broken bones. Nothing. He's alert. In fact, I talked to him right after he hit the ground. He'll be fine." (About car getting airborne): "We're playing with new areas from the aerodynamic standpoint, and of course, going backwards at that speed, you don't know what kind of lift it had. But obviously, it got airborne which we were surprised (about). We'll take a good look at it." (Will you repair the car?): "We wouldn't run that car. We'll run a backup car."(About the penalty given to Castroneves): "We were surprised that we got a penalty, quite honestly. We weren't notified of anything during the race that was going to be a review.  We've got 48 hours to review it and see what we're going to do."

Ecclestone's expression says how he feels about the current F1 democracy
Bernie Ecclestone suspects that very little will get agreed in Thursday's much anticipated F1 Strategy Group meeting, where rule changes both for the short term and for 2017 and beyond will be discussed.

Ecclestone controls six votes, the FIA has six, and Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Williams and Force India have one apiece. Ideas that gain support are then forwarded to the F1 Commission, where all the teams are represented.

Busch: No one expected me to come back this quickly
A day after receiving medical clearance to return to Sprint Cup Racing, a grateful Kyle Busch admitted Tuesday that after suffering extensive leg and foot injuries in a late February crash at Daytona International Speedway, virtually no one expected him to be back in a race car for this weekend's Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Busch credited his speedy recovery to physicians, intensive physical therapy and the extra time that not having a "day job" afforded him.

NASCAR grants Chase waiver to Kyle Busch
NASCAR announced today that Kyle Busch will remain eligible to compete for the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. Busch will qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup by meeting all requirements of eligibility excluding Rule 17.6.2.1.a, which requires a driver to start all Championship Events of the current season.

NASCAR made the decision after the driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota received the appropriate medical clearance documentation to immediately return to NASCAR racing. To qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Busch will need to be within the top 30 of the Championship point standings after race No. 26, and meet all other stated requirements within the NASCAR Rule Book.
