Indy Day 2 practice notebook
Team Penske driver Ryan Briscoe talked Saturday about the condensed schedule and Team Penske's chances in the 2010 Indianapolis 500.

RYAN BRISCOE: (About schedule): "It's about the same amount of running time. I think we're about six or eight hours shorter than we've had in the past. Track time is about the same, but it's a bit busier and a little more intense. There is a little more strategy involved with getting qualifying and race setup all in one week. Now we squeeze it in to one week and almost do a reverse. We'll get ready for the race first and then later in the week we'll really focus on qualifying and get ready for Pole Day next Saturday. I really like the fact that all of the drivers are out here on Opening Day. It's exciting for the fans that the first cars to hit the track are guys like Helio, Franchitti, Dixon and others who have won the race before. I think it is more incentive for the fans to come out and see the pros." (On running well in last year's Indy 500): "Last year was really good for me, but I was a bit unlucky in the race and we fell back. We had to make an extra stop early in the race. So, it was a bit unlucky, but I feel really good. The team, obviously, is the class of the field here at Indianapolis. It's going to be tough. I'm sure Ganassi is going to be strong, as well. We're going to be right there. Hopefully, we'll get it right on Race Day."

Speed increase on Day 2 at Indy
Seven rookies passed muster and another half-dozen breezed through their refresher programs. Soon afterward – on a cloudy and cool afternoon – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway came to life with 33 drivers getting the green flag to seek the speed necessary to pocket the $175,000 pole prize and the consistency to attain a bigger payday May 30.

Day 2 of practice for the Indianapolis 500 was interrupted a few times for moisture on the mammoth racing surface, but it didn’t drench lap speeds. For the second day in a row, Helio Castroneves paced the field with a lap of 227.046 mph (39.6395 seconds) and six topped 225 mph.

"Despite the weather, with it raining off and on, we were still able to work on some areas to make the car better for the race," Castroneves said. "It's always good to be out there learning something. On the fast lap, I just put myself in a good position to get a good draft and we wound up with a faster lap than yesterday (226.603 mph)."

Merc teammates side with Schu over Alonso move
(GMM)  Michael Schumacher's Mercedes teammates have sided with the seven time world champion over his controversial last-corner pass on Fernando Alonso.

After deliberating for four hours in Monaco, the stewards on Sunday evening decided to drop the German out of the points, even though team boss Ross Brawn insists the safety car period had officially ended.

Nico Rosberg thought Schumacher's pass had been a good one.

Stewards penalty drops Schumacher out of points
(GMM)  The Monaco stewards, including driver representative Damon Hill, have imposed a penalty that drops Michael Schumacher out of the points placings.

The seven time world champion passed Ferrari's Fernando Alonso at the last corner of Sunday's race, after the safety car that had been deployed for the Jarno Trulli/Karun Chandhok crash pulled into the pits.

There is a new rule in 2010 that allows overtaking between the safety car line and the finish line.

Audi A1 for Playmate of the Year
What do Markus Winkelhock and the "Playmate of the year 2009" have in common? Both come from Swabia. Michaela Grauke from Stuttgart was voted as "Playmate of the year 2009" by approximately 25,000 Playboy fans and was presented with the key for a brand new red Audi A1 1.4 T by the Audi factory driver during the official prize giving in Munich on Monday. Sorry, but we could not get the rights to any images of miss PMOY. We might just have to send Scott Morris out to catch a few shots.

BMW Wins Nurburgring 24
BMW's factory M3 GT2 took victory in this weekend's Nurburgring 24 Hours.  Drivers Jorg Muller, Augusto Farfus, Uwe Alzen and Pedro Lamy came home ahead of the Farnbacher Ferrari despite gearbox problems causing some scares in the final hours.

"During my last stint we lost fourth gear," said Muller. "The problem gradually got worse. The main priority was to be careful and keep the car in the race. Everything worked out superbly in the end."

The electro-hybrid Porsche 911 GT3 of Jorg Bergmeister, Richard Lietz, Marco Holzer and Martin Ragginger had looked set to take a historic victory as it led through the night, only to stop on track with a technical problem a few hours from the end, handing the lead to the BMW.

Schu, Brawn, confident Alonso pass was legal UPDATE Michael Schumacher has been assessed a 20-second penalty for having passed Fernando Alonso on the final corner of the Monaco Grand Prix, and drops from sixth to 12th in the final standings.

Schumacher will eventually get his sixth place reinstated because race steward Damon Hill made the wrong call, probably out of revenge
Under rule 40.13, which states that "if the race ends while the safety car is deployed it will enter the pitlane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the checkered flag as normal without overtaking," Schumacher has been given a penalty.

The German, who had passed Alonso for sixth, dropped all the way down to 12th, meaning Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi's scores the final point for 10th.

05/16/10 (GMM)  Michael Schumacher and Ross Brawn are confident there will no post-race penalty applied by the stewards in the wake of a controversial last-lap incident.

The seven time world champion passed Ferrari's Fernando Alonso at the last corner of Sunday's Monaco grand prix, after the safety car that had been deployed for the Jarno Trulli/Karun Chandhok crash pulled into the pits.

Webber leads title, stewards probe Schu-Alonso pass
(GMM)  Mark Webber on Sunday took over the lead of the world championship by winning his second consecutive grand prix in the space of a week.

The Australian, who was unchallenged in the Principality despite the appearance of several safety cars, dominated the entire Barcelona-Monaco double-header and is now level on points with his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Team boss Christian Horner urged Vettel to "relax" if he wants to get back on terms with the sister RB6.

"Sebastian dominated at the start of the season but Mark has really found his stride," the Briton told the BBC.

Team bosses still undecided on Michelin v Pirelli UPDATE (GMM)  After no less than three meetings in Monaco, a final decision about F1's tire situation for 2011 still has not been made.

The latest meeting was held on Sunday morning, with team bosses discussing solid proposals made by Michelin, Avon and Pirelli, amid reports Bridgestone might be persuaded to stay.

According to the BBC, FOTA's technical chief Ross Brawn said the Italian marque Pirelli's proposal is a viable one.

"We've had a good proposal from Pirelli which we're looking into seriously," he said.

It is believed another meeting will be held within the next few days, where a final decision is likely.

Alonso hits back at critics
Fernando Alonso rounded on his critics after being accused of making too many mistakes since moving to Ferrari this season.

Following his victory in the season opener in Bahrain Alonso was then involved in a first-corner collision with Michael Schumacher in the subsequent grand prix in Australia.

Rain during qualifying played havoc in Malaysia, with Alonso among a host of big names who started at the back of the grid after second guessing the weather and getting it wrong.

In China, the 28-year-old jumped the start and served a drive-through penalty before finally proving his worth again last Sunday in front of his home crowd in Spain by finishing second.

Ford sales tank in Europe
Auto sales fell last month in several major European markets as scrappage programs wound down or were curtailed in some countries, and Ford Motor Co.'s decline was even greater as the automaker held back on offering big incentives to match its rivals.

Ford's sales in its 19 traditional European markets fell more than 17 percent in April, compared with the same period a year ago, while the entire industry declined just more than 5 percent. As a result, Ford lost more than a point of market share in the region.

Rosberg not disappointed with new car switch
(GMM)  Nico Rosberg insists he is not disappointed with the reversion to the newer long-wheelbase Mercedes car for the forthcoming Turkish grand prix.

After Michael Schumacher struggled with the original short-wheelbase car earlier in 2010, he was the team's pacesetter in Barcelona, where a longer-wheelbase was introduced along with other car developments.

But for the twisty curves of Monaco, the original car is being used once again, and Rosberg has once again been in front of his famous teammate.

Webber emerging as 2010 title favorite
Mark Webber
(GMM)  Mark Webber is emerging as the favorite to win the 2010 world championship.  That is the belief of Mercedes reserve driver Nick Heidfeld, after seeing Webber's second pole position within a week on Saturday.

Webber, 33, still lags his highly-favored teammate Sebastian Vettel in the points standings, but won dominantly in Barcelona and is the favorite to hang onto first place in Monaco on Sunday.

He is 3:3 in his 2010 qualifying battle with Vettel, and now has the momentum of recent success, Heidfeld told German television Sky.

"We all know how strong Sebastian is," said the German, "but Mark is now beating him.  It's his third pole position.

Sun in Monaco, ash cloud in Britain
(GMM)  A warm and sunny day has greeted the formula one world ahead of the 2010 Monaco grand prix.

There is just a smattering of white cloud in the sky, and still the odd local forecast predicting a slight possibility of afternoon rain.

Causing more nervousness than the Monte Carlo forecasts, however, are reports that say the Icelandic volcano ash cloud is "rapidly encroaching" British airspace.

Airports in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man have already closed, and officials are warning that flights into England and other parts of Europe are also set to be disrupted in the coming days.

Top-10 to start Monaco and Super Soft tires
Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) has used Bridgestone’s super soft compound tire to blast to his third pole position of 2010 with a new pole position record amidst the glamour of the tight and twisty streets of Monte Carlo for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Webber set a time of 1min 13.826secs and will be joined on the front row tomorrow by Renault F1 Team driver Robert Kubica, who was also fastest in the morning practice session, using the super soft compound for a 1min 14.806secs lap.

Q&A with Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tire Development

What was significant about today’s running?

“Today was all about learning the track condition after a day of no Formula One Bridgestone rubber being laid on the surface yesterday. In the morning, track temperature was quite cool, so it took a little longer for both compounds to warm up to their ideal operating temperature.”

Rosberg apologizes to Schu after block
Michael Schumacher
(GMM)  Michael Schumacher accepted an apology from his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in the hours after qualifying at Monaco.  After the seven time world champion told reporters he had been blocked in Q3 by the younger German, Rosberg later said: "I apologized because I realized that it wasn't ideal."

The Brackley based team also took a portion of the blame, admitting that the radio and GPS systems have not been working well in the Principality.

Boss Ross Brawn conceded that Schumacher, who has been outqualified by Rosberg at every grand prix venue this year except Barcelona a week ago, was initially "annoyed" about the incident.

"But when I explained to him what happened he was ok, just frustrated," said the Briton.

And he said it was a mistake to have the two W01 cars circulating nose-to-tail, following a problem getting "Nico's car out of the garage".  "We cocked up," admitted Brawn.

Webber in 'no rush' for new Red Bull deal
Mark Webber
(GMM) Mark Webber is F1's man of the moment, but on Saturday he was not in the mood to confirm the latest paddock rumor.

In the space of a few months, the Australian has been linked with a looming retirement and a 2011 Ferrari seat, and the latest whisper is that he has signed an extension of his contract with Red Bull.

But in Monaco, after scoring his second consecutive pole position within a week, the last-start winner played a straight bat.

"Certainly haven't come to any agreements yet but there's still a long way to go in terms of what to do for next year," said the 33-year-old, the first Australian since Sir Jack Brabham in 1967 to be on pole in the Principality.

And if he wins on Sunday, leaping towards the very top of the drivers' standings, it will be the first Australian win in Monaco since Brabham more than 50 years ago.

HRT denies fighting for F1 survival
(GMM)  HRT has denied reports it is fighting for survival.

At Monaco, F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone said in an interview with a British newspaper that he was working to help the struggling Spanish outfit make it through its debut season.

But team owner Jose Ramon Carabante responded: "For sure it (the comments) is not about us, maybe he is talking about other teams that do not have sponsors.

"We have no financial problems and we are already thinking about 2011," he told the Spanish sports newspaper Diario AS in Monaco.

However, given the collapse of the team's relationship with its car designer Dallara, Finland's Turun Sanomat predicts that HRT will run out of spare parts by June's Canadian grand prix.

It has already been suggested that the lack of spare parts explains why Bruno Senna's car has not been repaired since a problem at the rear developed in Spain a week ago.

The situation means the Brazilian rookie would have been only tenth on the GP2 practice timesheets on Thursday.

Nicolas Todt hinted in Monaco that his GP2 team ART has much higher ambitions should the FIA, led by his father Jean, grant the team the 13th team place for 2011.

"We do not want to be seven seconds behind.  If we did not have the budget, we would not be doing it," the Frenchman told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.
