Andretti team dominates Thursday Indy Practice (Updated)  UPDATE Added results below.

05/16/13 In a show of strength, Andretti Autosport dominated the first 3, and 4 of the top 6, positions in today's practice sessions. Rookie Carlos Munoz posted a 225.125, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti. Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves rounded out the top 5. In all, 33 cars took to the track, although Buddy Lazier was not up to speed on his lap on the track.

Rookie Munoz also seemed to quickly be a fan favorite, at least among females of the Tiger Beat Magazine age group. Moving to the fence to sign an autograph, he was quickly engulfed by a swarm of giggling, swooning, blushing very young females. No doubt the Columbian has some star power shared by fellow Columbian Helio.  More ...

Conor Daly Crashes - Indy Thursday Practice report  UPDATE Added crash photos.

Daly hits the Turn 1 wall
Mike Young/IRL
Conor Daly crashed heavily in the south short chute around 2:15 pm, between turns 1 and 2. It appears as though he got in too high, and as he tried to bring it back into the groove the rear end stepped out. The car hit flush with the right side of the car, pretty much destroying everything on that side. Conor was checked and released back into the pool (cleared to drive); the incident is the first of the month. AJ Foyt racing was rumored to be considering a third car, so should it be necessary they do have at least 1 spare car.

The comments from drivers all seem to be from the same copy writer: “We got out yesterday, ran some laps, mile’d out on the motor. We’ll see how it goes today.” The engines have to go at least 1850 miles between changes this year, with a maximum of 2000 miles. This means that most of the teams will hit that number sometime Friday, “necessitating” a motor change for Pole Day -- although Chevy representatives think that this strategy is a secret or something. Possible Indy track upgrades for 2014  The state has approved a major loan package of $100 million for upgrading the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Speedway is in the process of hiring a master planner to prioritize projects, but fans are already making suggestions.

Chief Operating Officer Doug Boles said fans' suggestions will be taken seriously.

"Fan input is really out biggest piece, so we filter everything through the fan experience," Boles said. "I think most of the improvements and additions that you're going to see here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have something to do with the fan experience. So we take a lot of that input. We understand what our fans like. We understand some of the things that are more difficult for them when they're here. And so we're going to try and work through those." More ...

McLaren wants Button for new Honda era
Button
(GMM)  McLaren on Thursday opened the door for Jenson Button to lead the charge for the new works Honda partnership beginning in 2015.

Button's existing contract does not extend that far, and so when the 33-year-old was mentioned and quoted in Thursday's official statement, it did not say if the Briton would still be in the cockpit.

But McLaren's managing director Jonathan Neale said on Thursday: "I was just laughing with Jenson about it.

"Jenson will drive here as long as he wants to.

"He fits our values and our culture really well.  He's here with the workforce this morning and it's more a question of hoping he will still be here in 2015," he added. More ...

McLaren-Honda deal not exclusive  McLaren says its new engine deal with Honda from 2015 is not exclusive, leaving the door open for other teams to seek a supply deal when the Japanese manufacturer returns to the sport.

McLaren has secured a works deal with Honda, but when asked if it was "exclusive" McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale said there was nothing stopping Honda supplying a second team.

"It is better if Honda answers that directly, but all engine suppliers coming in to F1 know they are doing so with the expectation that should they be required, they are prepared to supply more than one team," he was quoted by Autosport. "We have no illusions; and we have a lot of work to be ready for 2015. But should the FIA or Bernie [Ecclestone] request, then Honda is aware of that situation. It is not exclusive in that respect."

NASCAR does not plan to change rules on communicating with suspended crew chiefs  While teams continue to expand communications with suspended crew chiefs and crewmen, NASCAR does not plan to change its rules on teams communicating with personnel not allowed at the track. NASCAR President Mike Helton said Wednesday that no changes in the rules are planned. NASCAR's rules keep those suspended off track property and off team radios. More ...

Audi goes to Le Mans aerodynamically optimized
In Le Mans, a long-tail version of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro will be entered
Five more weeks until the Le Mans 24 Hours celebrates its 90th anniversary. Over the period of 14 years, Audi has won this classic race eleven times and in doing so has consistently been delivering top performances in aerodynamics as well. They are a major reason for excellent lap times being achieved again and again despite the reductions of engine output due to the regulations.

A look at Audi’s first sports prototype is quite revealing, as the concept of the Audi R8R from 1999 clearly differed from the current R18 e-tron quattro – not only because the first race car had an open cockpit as opposed to the closed one of the current car. More ...

Change for Indy 500 victory lane  The Indy 500 winner won’t be lifted in victory lane now that the platform on which his car rests has been grounded.

IMS officials decided to discontinue the raising of the car to make additional room for team members to celebrate with their driver. The lift, which debuted in 2000, wasn’t large enough to accommodate more than the car and a few people.  It was meant to raise the top-3 finishers (i.e. the podium).
