Many dignitaries and partners of the Grand Prix du Canada attended today the inauguration ceremony of the new paddocks at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, after a year of intensive construction work coordinated by the Societe du parc Jean-Drapeau within a tight deadline. The major project was completed through funding that included a $41 million contribution by the City of Montreal and $18 million from the Gouvernement du Quebec. Completion of the renovated paddocks means the 2019 edition of the Grand Prix du Canada Formula One race, which starts on June 7, will have new state-of-the-art facilities.

Newgarden leads Castroneves
Newgarden leads Castroneves

JOSEF NEWGARDEN (No. 2 Shell V-Power Nitro Plus Team Penske Chevrolet): "We had a pretty good day. We're trying to set a few things methodically and slowly. I was relatively happy with the car being in the window. The Shell Chevy looks good and feels good. It looks like a race car. It's really pretty and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. We just need to make sure it's as fast as it needs to be. It was a solid day. We worked on some race stuff and will probably get into some qualifying stuff tomorrow."

Newgarden leads Day 2 at Indy, but really Rossi did
Rossi fastest without a tow
Rossi fastest without a tow

Josef Newgarden turned the fastest lap in his #2 Penske Chevy on Wednesday at 228.865mph, but that speed was set with a big tow and is not indicative of real speed.  #9 Scott Dixon was 2nd quick and close behind at 228.835mph. It's nice to get all the glory, but you won't be qualifying this weekend with a tow.

However, the real fastest man on Wednesday was Alexander Rossi. He turned zero laps with a tow, so in the first table he was a lowly 34th quick, but in the 2nd table below, the no-tow speed table, he was fastest on the day at 224.648mph in his #98 Andretti Honda.

Alonso's mangled McLaren Chevy

An incident in turn 3 has ended Fernando Alonso's Indy 500 practice session Wednesday. Fernando is okay and the team are currently evaluating damage to the car.

He explains what happened in this interview but it is pretty clear his car is not handling well behind another car.

FERNANDO ALONSO - (On what happened prior to contact) “It was understeer on the car, and even if I lifted the throttle on the entry of the corner, it was not enough, and I lost completely the front aero. The wall came too close and too quickly. Unfortunately it happened today. We will lose a little bit of running time again. I’m sorry for the team, but we will learn and hopefully we will come back stronger tomorrow. I’m disappointed and sad for the team and for the guys.

Nikita Mazepin buries field first time ever in the Mercedes

Proving that F1 is at least 99% car and 1% driver, and perhaps 99.5% to 0.5%, F2 driver Nikita Mazepin stepped into a Mercedes F1 car for the very first time and buried everyone else with a 1m15.775s lap, 1.25s faster than Alex Albon in 2nd at 1m17.079s.

The Mercedes is so good pretty much any decent driver can step into it and win.

GP of Indianapolis TV Rating (3rd Update)
Simon Paegnaud's sensational defeat of Scott Dixon kept viewers glued to their seat
Simon Paegnaud's sensational defeat of Scott Dixon kept viewers glued to their seat

UPDATE CORRECTION: Our spreadsheet of historical ratings had an error. It indeed was a 0.55 final rating last year.  Our spreadsheet had 0.8, but that was last year’s overnight. We reported last May: The Verizon IndyCar Series IndyCar Grand Prix at IMS Saturday on ABC pulled in a 0.8 TV rating (1.14 million viewers) between 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM ET, up 14% from last year's overnight TV rating of 0.7. The final rating dropped to 0.55 but we did not update our spreadsheet.

Therefore, this year's 'final' rating was actually up 29% over 2018, which is great news.

IndyCar's 'Nub' is causing headache for drivers
Note clear plastic lip installed at the leading edge of Alexander Rossi's cockpit opening
Note clear plastic lip installed at the leading edge of Alexander Rossi's cockpit opening behind the silly 'Nub'
IndyCar decided to implement a 'Nub' in front of the drivers faces in the name of safety until their chassis can be redesigned to accommodate a full F1-Halo.

The idea is that it might deflect an object and save the driver from injury.

Unfortunately it is causing buffeting of the drivers head, and in some cases lifting of the helmet from their head.

Teams are experimenting with different size windscreen lips behind it to try and direct the air over the drivers head.
