F1 Engine costs have doubled
AR1.com has been telling its readers for two years that the horrible sounding F1 engines have doubled in costs and are driving fans to the exits out of sheer boredom.

But wait, the familiar high pitched scream can still be heard in some areas of the paddock… the offices of team finance directors.

Though enjoying something of a renaissance, certainly compared to where it was a couple of years back, Williams owes much of its recent success to the inspired move to Mercedes power units.

However, the move came at a price.

Largest auto recall in history announced
Air bag maker Takata Corp. has agreed to declare 33.8 million of its inflator mechanisms defective, effectively doubling the number of cars and trucks that have been recalled in the U.S. so far.

The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which reached an agreement with Takata after sparring with the company for the past year over the size of the recalls and the cause of the problem with millions of air bags. It will be the largest recall in the agency's history.

IndyCar needs to bite bullet, and bite it now UPDATE Another reader writes, Dear AR1.com, Scrap those 2014 rules,  Put a "Indy Car" cover on the 1995 rule book!  950 hp V8s Any car builder you want, NO SPEC Dallara shit box. It was the best racing in the world at the time and could be again. Oh don't get me going, the state of Indy Car racing makes me sick. I was trying to talk it up the other day, the guy says, "My road car makes more power than an Indy Car, why should I bother with them". Enough said.  John Miller

A reader writes, Dear AutoRacing1.com, I have an absolute solution to the problems plaguing the sport I love, IndyCar, right now.

Revert back to the spec that produced great safe racing for the past three years!  IndyCar needs to bite the bullet, admit it made a mistake, with the best of intentions but a mistake nonetheless, and pay each entrant $250,000. (about half of what they have spent but worth it to bring back great, safer, racing) and mandate the 2014 spec from Detroit on.

IndyCar qualifying TV rating
INDYCAR Indianapolis 500 time trials Sunday pulled a 0.97 TV rating on ABC with about 1.2 million viewers. All IndyCar races should be on network TV with 1+ million viewers per race.  Instead IndyCar spends money on aero kits that are destroying team finances and sending cars airborne with most races on NBCSN that hardly anyone watches. They like cashing that NBCSN check though.

Something is amiss in Indianapolis, where a series of wrecks is overshadowing 500
Did Hinchcliffe's right front suspension fail because it could not withstand the added downforce from the new aero kits? Lack of testing - shame on IndyCar
IndyCar had a crisis looming well before James Hinchcliffe was injured in another spectacular accident during preparations for the most esteemed race in motorsports.

Three cars have gone airborne, and one of the series' most popular drivers was in the intensive care unit Monday night after surgery on an injury to Hinchcliffe's left thigh suffered when he crashed following a suspension part breaking. IndyCar said he was in stable condition.

As Hinchcliffe's car shot back down the track toward the apron, it quickly tilted on its side and seemed headed to a rollover before it snapped back down on all four wheels.

Hinchcliffe injured in another big Indy crash (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Hinchcliffe is listed in stable condition and underwent surgery on his upper left thigh at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He will not be driving in this year's Indy 500.

05/18/15 James was reported awake, breathing on his own, but in pain. Practice on hold until "we can determine the cause of the accident." Sources saying that it was "confirmed" that is was a front-right failure. In-car audio had a flapping noise, not unlike a flat tire.  Looked to me like both front tires were up. Tim Wohlford reporting from Indy

05/18/15 James Hinchcliffe has had a big accident during practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this afternoon.  The car appeared to bottom on the transmission (suspension failure) and he went hard into the Turn 3 wall.  The lap before in the same corner you can see a puff of smoke from under the car as if it bottomed on that lap too.

When the destroyed car came to rest Hinch was moving his head slightly but then he appeared to lose consciousness.  He was removed on a backboard but reports are he is now awake and alert and being taken to the IU Medical Center.

IndyCar Butt Bumpers send another car flipping at Indy (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 The two photos below show clearly why the Chevys are getting airborne when they get backwards but the Hondas should not.  Note how the Honda has a flat back with zero lift but the inside of the Chevy Butt Bumper has a sloped surface (where the car no. is) that cause a huge amount of lift at the speeds the cars are going as soon as the car turns backward at 200+ MPH.

New Audi R8 LMS wins Nurburgring 24 Hours
The Audi R8 LMS managed a brilliant 24-hour racing debut by clinching victory at the Nurburgring. Audi only unveiled its GT3 race car ten weeks ago – now the production-based sports car impressed in a tough battle that lasted up to the last hour of the race. In the end, Audi Sport Team WRT with Christopher Mies/Nico Müller/Edward Sandstrom/Laurens Vanthoor (D/CH/S/B) was 40 seconds faster than the BMW Team Marc VDS.

The battle for victory in the Eifel endurance race has not been as thrilling as this in a long time. During the 24 hours the lead changed 35 times – a record in the event that has been held since 1970. After the race’s midpoint, either the number ‘28’ R8 LMS or its fiercest rival was running in front, depending on the pit stop sequence. In the end, the Belgian Audi team prevailed with a concentrated performance of its drivers and solid teamwork. Vincent Vosse’s squad and each of the four race drivers celebrated their first victory in this classic event.

Sunday Qualification - Rules changes
Mark Miles and Derrick Walker make excuses for the silly aero kits
Mark Miles and Derrick Walker make excuses for the silly aero kits
Mark Miles and Derrick Walker announced at a recently concluded press conference that qualifications will be done in race setup and normal boost levels. What you run today, you have for the race. There also will be no Fast Nine shootout.

Already the cynics in the media center, and no doubt elsewhere, are calling this "amateur hour". However, Miles and Walker both reiterated that they had 3 cars get airborne, and that they didn't entirely understand why, and so "out of an abundance of caution" they made the rule changes. Since they didn't understand the issue entirely, they couldn't say for sure that the Honda vehicles wouldn't have the same problem, so the changes were applied to Honda as well.

Mark Miles meets the press
Mark Miles, CEO - Hulman & Company, parent of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway:

"This morning we saw a third car get into the wall, turn backward and lift into the air. We've said all along we want to go faster, but we want to do so safely.

"As a precautionary measure, INDYCAR will require that the cars qualify today in the same aero setup that they will run in the Indianapolis 500 next weekend. Also, for today, boost levels will return to race conditions. Given these changes, we have elected to not award points for today's qualifications.

Sunday Qualification - delays continue! (Update) UPDATE And to think, all that money spent on aero kits that appear to be causing the cars to snap out of control and fly thru the air, and they do not put one single additional fan in the grandstand. Instead the money should have been used to put all races on network TV.

The CART IndyCar were running faster than these cars run way back in 1996.  The current underpowered Dallara was never designed to run at these speeds, so now they are adding all sorts of body parts to try and get the speeds back to where they were in 1996 - 20 years ago.  And they call this progress?  CART was light years ahead of the IRL (now IndyCar), but Tony George decided to spend a family fortune to kill it off and now we have what we have. And many of the teams owners currently in the paddock broke ranks with CART and sided with Tony George in the destruction of what was the greatest open wheel series in North America and a very close 2nd to F1 to create the current state of IndyCar Racing. Gentlemen take a bow.

Sunday Qualification, and this is gonna be GOOD!
Ed Carpenter crashed in turn 2 in early practice. Like previous Chevy crashes his car snapped around and backed into the wall. Unlike the previous crashes, while the car did get on its roof it was from the action of the wall than from the air.

This has thrown the entire schedule out the window. 10:00, the scheduled start time for qualification, has come and gone. More importantly, rumor has it that IndyCar will now DISALLOW the added boost, changing the aero for at least the Chevrolet cars, and planning yet another practice session in the near future.

Prior to that Scott Dixon lead the field with a 233.001, more than a tenth faster that Will Power. Not every car that wanted to practice got out on the track, as the yellow flag flew for both the Carpenter incident as well as a later wall repair

Today all 33 spots will be decided. If one of the cars hits the wall and the driver is unable to get back on the track, then we have our 33 for the month. Under old traditional qualifying procedures, Ryan Hunter-Reay would be sitting on the Pole for next week's race, but with the current ad-hoc rain-addled system it would be entirely possible for Hunter-Reay to miss the show if he smacks the wall today.

-- Lucille Dust and Tim Wohlford, reporting from IMS

Penske wants to run Blaney full time in 2016
Ryan Blaney
Ryan Blaney
Roger Penske wants Ryan Blaney to run a full NASCAR Sprint Cup season in 2016 with the Wood Brothers. Blaney, a Team Penske development driver, has been farmed out to the Wood Brothers for about 18 Cup races this year. Blaney has made four starts so far this season and finished a career-best fourth at Talladega three weeks ago.

A lack of available seats has made it difficult for Penske to give Blaney many opportunities, and the Wood Brothers alliance has worked well for both sides. "This is a partnership really with Woods' people and ours," Penske said before Saturday night's All-Star race. "We've got the technology and the ability to build the right pieces for them. It's like a brother-in-law."
