Can IndyCar succeed in New England where it has failed before?
IndyCar failed miserably in New Hampshire. Will the party atmosphere of downtown Boston make it an annual pilgrimage for IndyCar?
The clean, quick, jet-like whine produced by turbo-charged Indy car engines will reverberate throughout the Boston Seaport district next Labor Day weekend after the Verizon IndyCar Series announced Thursday it plans to expand its 2016 schedule to include the Grand Prix of Boston.

The race will be held Sept. 2-4, 2016, and contested over an 11-turn, 2.25-mile temporary street circuit that will encircle the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. It will mark the first time the IndyCar Series has raced in the Boston area but will not be the first time open-wheeled Indy cars have raced in New England.

The track was dry early and some drivers got good lap times in.  Then it began to rain and drivers all pitted. The rain stopped with half an hour to go, but it wasn't until the final 10 minutes that drivers headed back out.

Rossi claims wet Monte Carlo pole
Pole for American Alexander Rossi
Alexander Rossi has claimed pole position - the second of his GP2 career - in the streets of Monte Carlo in wet conditions. The American driver set a laptime of 1:37.019, half a second clear of his closest rival Arthur Pic in Group B. Quickest in Group A, Raffaele Marciello will start from the front row in tomorrow's feature race.

Group A – Odd numbered cars
Drops of rain started to fall as the thirteen cars of the first group lined up in the pitlane. Some opted for super soft tires (including Series leader Stoffel Vandoorne), whilst others more cautious decided to take to the track on wet tires. The latter option proved to be the best one as the drivers on slick tires struggled on a slippery track on their out-lap. They re-joined the pitlane to switch to wet compounds.

Frenchman Arthur Pic set the fastest laptime of this morning’s free practice session. He lapped the narrow streets of Monte Carlo in a 1:20.556 in the closing stages, two tenths quicker than Alexander Rossi and Pierre Gasly.

The session opened in cool conditions and under grey skies with Rossi being the first man to feed onto the track. However, before anyone could complete a lap, Mitch Evans stopped between turns 2 and 3 with what seemed to be electrical gremlins. The red flags were out and the cars returned to the pits briefly. When the track was live again, Rossi wasted no time to top the timesheet.

Andretti pans IndyCar Aero Kits
Andretti: All we did was spend a lot of money and hurt the racing. We split the field up. I don't think the cars race as good as they did. It put the burden of expense on the teams and I don't think there's one more new fan in those stands because of it.
Here's the one thing we know for sure about the IndyCar aero kits: They're controversial. And they've been a point of controversy in the IndyCar paddock since they were first discussed in 2010.

That controversy has only intensified this May, with high-profile team owner Michael Andretti taking the wheel as the most vocal detractor.

The aerodynamic body work was supposed to set the Honda and Chevrolet cars apart. IndyCar also sought other manufacturers to make aero kits and bring more variety to the series. In the end, though, manufacturers besides Honda and Chevy took a pass.

The kits were supposed to bring the promise of higher speeds and potential new track records for the Indianapolis 500 -qualifications and race.

Mercedes Engine Boss Andy Cowell Rejects Ecclestone's Hybrid Claims
Mercedes has rejected claims by F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone that the current turbo hybrid engines "have no relevance to road cars," according to Andrew Benson of the BBC. Ecclestone, 84, has "long opposed the engines because they are quieter and more expensive than the previous V8s." He told F1 Racing magazine that the engines "have nothing to do with cars; they will never be used in cars."

But Mercedes F1 engine boss Andy Cowell said that road cars would soon be using "exactly the same" technology. Two separate hybrid technologies are being used in the F1 engines, which were introduced last season. One "recovers energy from the rear axle during braking, stores it in a battery and reapplies it under acceleration."
