Square CEO Jack Dorsey, is also getting Square big into Bitcoin payment processing

Payment processing company Square has signed a new B2B deal with Indianapolis Motor Speedway where it will provide its payment processors at the track's concession stands for Sunday's Indianapolis 500.

Many of the track’s concession stands previously only accepted cash, but they now will carry Square’s hardware that accepts all credit/debit cards plus mobile payments like those from Google and Apple.

Hawkers walking up and down the grandstands also will carry Square mobile handheld hardware to accept credit/debit and mobile payments, and Square says this is only the second sporting event where it has used such technology. Square also has a deal with the Nationals. Adam Stern/SBD

Goodyear tire info for Charlotte
Goodyear will debut a special “Honor and Remember” sidewall at Charlotte
Goodyear will debut a special “Honor and Remember” sidewall at Charlotte
According to this week’s Goodyear media release, “Monster Energy NASCAR Cup teams will be running the same tire set-up for the Coca-Cola 600 that they ran during All-Star weekend at Charlotte. Based on the racing last weekend, tires will be a factor. First, All-Star teams that took four tires overcame the track position of those that did not. Second, with 12 race sets of tires for NASCAR’s longest race, the pit crews will play a big part in a team’s success, and those that master all those four-tire pit stops will help their car gain valuable spots on pit road.”

Added Greg Stucker, Goodyear director of racing, “The Coca-Cola 600 is the longest race on the schedule and it is held on one of the more temperature sensitive tracks upon which we compete, as the race starts in daylight and ends at night. We saw that fresh tires mattered last weekend during the All-Star race. Four tire pit stops should be the order of the day and teams have 12 sets of tires for the 400-lap race, so the team aspect of the sport will be on full display as the pit crews will be kept busy all night.”

Zak Brown's candid account of McLaren's failure to qualify for the Indy 500 reveals the team's costly lack of preparation and an astounding comedy of errors.

Miles says ticket sales are up, but with Alonso now out of the race, it is hard to tell what the walkup will be.
Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., which owns IndyCar and IMS, said the mixture of notable on-track storylines, activation from corporate partners and a deeper commitment to myriad community events around the race have been keys to the continued success in attendance of the Indy 500.

“It’s not like we had a lot of scientific data to project what to expect [after 2016], but knew how to sustain a lot of the growth in that year and it seems to be working,” Miles said. “The major contributor is we’ve had great racing but the thing that is more new for us, beginning in ’16, was the community engagement -- really working to involve every element of the community.”

Miles said that as of early May, ticket sales were tracking up a couple percent from last year’s crowd of 300,000, which could put this year’s attendance closer to 310,000, should the uptick hold through the race. Adam Stern/SBD
