Richard Childress Racing announced today they have re-signed driver Kevin Harvick to a multi-year contract that will keep him behind the wheel of the no. 29 Chevrolet. Terms and length of the new contract were not disclosed.

"It's great to put all the questions to bed," said Harvick. "I know I’ve been pretty quiet about the way we've gone about it, but I feel pretty good about the way everything has gone between Richard (Childress) and myself and all the internal things that have been going on."

Toyota Racing announced the winner in the on-line "Sponsafy Your Ride Contest" on Saturday, unveiling the winning design selected from over 77,000 submissions.

In addition to the grand prize package, Toyota has donated $5,000 to Karson's family to help with his medical costs. Driver Denny Hamlin's charitable foundation plans to make a donation as well.

Toyota driver and team owner Michael Waltrip will take Knape's winning design to the track in June at the Toyota/save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway.

Indy Qualifying update at 4:00 PM  If you wanted to go fast today, you had to be lucky.  Those with early draws had faster speeds, but by 1:00 the track had gotten slippery, the winds were gusting, the sun was out, and the frustrations -- growing.

This year, the top nine qualifiers must requalify at the end of the day, but at least Alex is in the hunt for the final pole position.  Seemingly solidly in that last round are Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti, Will Power, Scott Dixon, Alex Tagliani, and Graham Rahal.  Surprisingly, Ed Carpenter hung onto the 9th spot.

Around 3:00 the clouds started to come out, and activity began to resume.  Helio captured P1 in the heat, which then encouraged the rest of the field.  Ryan Briscoe then made the top 9 with his attempt.  After unsuccessful attempts by Alex Lloyd and EJ Viso, Vitor Meira put the AJ Foyt car into the race (but not solidly).  More ...

Heart stopping win for Tambay in Imola  Adrien Tambay was first under Race 1 checkered flag in Imola. It was an unexpected result, clinched thanks to a great drive and maybe a bit blessed by fate, given the huge number of connections: Adrien Tambay wins on the same track where, 27 years ago, his father Patrick won an F.1 GP with a #27 Ferrari car; and if this isn't enough, 27 is also the number of the box in which the Charouz-Gravity Racing cars are parked.

The first straight was enough to realize that the Imola race was going to be an eventful one: Pantano's start was better than Tambay's, and the Italian driver immediately started to put pressure on the poleman. At the first corner, the Tamburello chicane, Filippi made a mistake and went through the gravel trap, cutting the corner. He emerged still ahead, but with dirt tires he was an easy pray for Pantano and had to look in the mirrors to block Tambay, followed by Duncan Tappy, Onidi, Piscopo, Crestani, Grubmüller and Charouz, with the Czech forced to retire on lap 2 due to a gearbox problem. Indy Qualifying update at 12:30  After an 90 minutes of qualification for the 2010 Indy 500, Alex Tagliani sits on the provisional pole for the Indy 500.  Helio Castroneves is a close second, followed by Will Power.  At the end of the day, the top 9 qualifiers will requalify for the pole position, so Alex's team is not done with the day.

Complicating the Tagliani situation is that his teammate, Bruno Junqueira, sits on the sidelines due to sponsorship (and if rumors are true, parts shortage) issue.  In previous years the parts from Tag's car could simply be used on Bruno’s car, but now the second pole attempt twist in qualifying means that the car must be kept intact until the end of the day. Palmer takes superb victory in Monza classic
Palmer, Dean Stoneman and Kazim Vasiliauskas atop the podium
Jolyon Palmer delivered an assured performance to clinch his second win of the season in the opening race at Monza.

Starting from pole, Palmer made a solid start to keep the lead into the first corner before second placed Johan Jokinen boosted past the 19-year-old on the run down to the second chicane. The Dane's joy was to be short lived however, as he received a drive through penalty from the race stewards. Jokinen had unfortunately stalled his car on the green flag lap, and he then broke the rules as he filtered back through the field prior to the start. It was a bitter blow for the talented racer as he handed the lead back to Palmer on lap eight. More ...

Dover TV Ratings drop  UPDATE NASCAR on FOX delivered a 3.7/10 (5.8 million viewers) on Sunday afternoon for racing from DOVER. Sunday's 3.7/10 is down -8% compared to last year's 4.0/10 when the race did not face an NBA Playoff game. That -8% decline is the steepest for a NASCAR race since February's Las Vegas race, and reverses a fairly positive recent trend in which three of FOX's four Sprint Cup races prior to Dover had posted modest year-to-year gains. For the season-to-date, NASCAR On FOX is now averaging a 4.9/10 nationally. That's down -4% compared to last season's 5.1/11 and excludes races that were rained out and made-up on Mondays.

05/17/10 NASCAR on FOX earned a 3.6/9 Sunday for racing from Dover International Speedway. That's flat with last year's overnight, although this year's race faced markedly tougher competition. This year's Dover race aired two weeks earlier than last year's and the final hour of the race faced the NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, and PGA golf, three events that combined for 6.7 rating points worth of competition from 3:30-4:30pm. Last year's race aired on the last Sunday of May and faced just 3.7 points of competition. With just one race remaining on FOX, NASCAR is averaging a 4.4/9 in the metered markets, off -4% compared to last year's 4.6/9.

Overheard at Indy - Friday  In the final practice before qualifications at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, thirty drivers were within 1/2 of a second today of the fastest lap put in by Helio Castroneves.  Castroneves was barely an eye blink faster than Will Power - around 2/100 of a second.  Alex Tagliani was a surprise third fastest.  Helio is on top of the combined practice sheets as well, just barely ahead of Scott Dixon.  Except for a minor brush with the wall by Paul Tracy, there were no on-track incidents.  Virtually all cars recorded a combined practice time within a second of the top speed for the month.

The day was often interrupted by light rain, was considerably cooler (70 degrees) than the forecast for Saturday -- and certainly cooler than the expected 90 degree day on Sunday.  Indy is always a temperature-sensitive track, and so the teams will have to dig into their data books for a setup for the next 2 days.  More ...

Q&A with Team Penske at Indy  Roger Penske, Rick Mears, Tim Cindric, Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Will Power

MODERATOR: OK, as is the usual procedure here, we'll introduce the participants and get the questioning going, then open it up to you. Again we have to move this along rather quickly because everybody involved up here does have another commitment at 11.
Starting the introductions from the far end, we all know the 15-time Indianapolis 500 winner going for another one this year, Roger Penske. The president of Penske Racing, Tim Cindric; team adviser, four-time winner, Rick Mears; Mikaella's father -- is that a good enough intro? Three-time winner going for four, Helio Castroneves; Ryan Briscoe, who was in the championship hunt right until the final race last year and the current points leader in the IZOD IndyCar Series; with a great start to 2010, Will Power.
Roger, with 15 wins, is the 16th just going to be another ho-hum race and win for you or are they all important?

ROGER PENSKE: I don't think you can come to this racetrack and think it's ho-hum. One of the things we say to our people is that we come here like it's the first time. The thing we do have is the experience. I've said it before, some 600 years of experience are in that garage of running at this track. You know, it's a constant challenge for us as a team, for me personally, and I think that the people that we put together for this year, the three drivers, are the very best, you know, I feel in the whole group of drivers that are here with experience. Obviously, Will, he's not had the experience on the ovals but seeing what he's been able to do here in the last couple of days; Helio, and also Ryan, I think we've got the guys to beat. More ...

Filippi unstoppable on Friday in Imola
Lucas Filippi
Luca Filippi was unstoppable today in Imola. The Euronova Racing driver clinched the best time of the whole day, 1'32"324, but he was the quickest also in the last Practice, even with a slower time (1'32"872). In the combined classification of the whole day, including also the two testing sessions, Filippi is ahead of Giorgio Pantano. The SuperNova driver is hoping for a strong performance tomorrow to recover after a really unlucky start in Brno, and given the pace shown throughout the day he is undoubtedly among the favourites. Mercedes crew winning 2010 pitstop speed race  (GMM)  Mercedes is winning the race as the team with the fastest pitstops in 2010.

An analysis by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport shows the Brackley based team has performed the fastest race pitstop at the last four grands prix of the season.

Interestingly, Michael Schumacher was turned around the fastest of the entire F1 field in China, Spain and Monaco, while his teammate Nico Rosberg only received the quickest service in Malaysia.

The Red Bull pit crew, meanwhile, did the fastest pitstops at the opening Bahrain and Australian grands prix, with both Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber benefitting equally from the quick service.

The speed of the tire-changing pit crews is more significant this year than in the recent past due to the ban on refuelling.

"For us, we need to do things even better than the best in order to not be open to criticism," he added.

"Our dossier needs to be better than any others, because I do not expect any gifts from the FIA, quite the contrary," said Todt. More ...
