IMS to improve track egress for Indy 500
An extensive review that included consultation with some of the world's leading experts in innovative stadium strategies has produced a new gate entry plan that will allow fans attending the 98th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race to enter the facility with greater ease and efficiency than ever before.

This year, IMS will open eight additional gates to fans entering the facility, as the open gate total goes from 18 in 2013 to 26 on Sunday. The opening of these eight new gates will, in turn, increase the total number of entry lanes from 77 to 182, with 12 express lanes for those entering the facility without coolers or bags.

Dallara's simulator flawed
Mario Andretti got in Dallara's new IndyCar simulator earlier this week.

"I was playing around and drove on that white (line in the IMS turns) and all of a sudden I'm crashing," he told the Indy Star. "It actually was scary.

"Then before you know it I'm up (high) looking down on the Speedway. I said to the engineer, 'Am I dead? Am I looking down from upstairs?' "

Then things got virtually weird.

Montezemolo moves to ease Alonso frustration
(GMM)  Luca di Montezemolo on Thursday moved to reassure an apparently increasingly frustrated Fernando Alonso.

Daimler and Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche this week hailed the Spaniard as "perhaps the best driver" in F1.

Alonso responded by saying it is "curious" that rivals heap praise on him, while only "opposite" feedback comes from those in his inner circle.

It was interpreted as a clear sign that Alonso's patience may finally be up with the Maranello team, five years after Ferrari promised him a title-winning car.

Title leader Hamilton 'overslept' in Monaco
(GMM)  There was action on and off the track in Monaco on Thursday.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton's day began with a thump on the door, as two Mercedes staff roused the sleepy Briton in his harbourside yacht.

With just minutes to spare before morning practice, Hamilton was hurriedly ferried to dry land and he was still jogging to the paddock as the turbo V6 engines began to rev.

"I overslept," he admitted afterwards.

Palmer on pole position
Series leader Jolyon Palmer has ruled today’s qualifying session in Monte Carlo with another blazing laptime of 1:20.774 leaving only crumbs to his closest rivals. Rio Haryanto who set the quickest laptime in Group B will start from P2 tomorrow whilst Mitch Evans who was second fastest in Palmer’s group will start from third place on the feature race grid.

Group A
The first qualifying group which consisted of all odd numbered cars fed onto the track on super soft Pirelli tires. Palmer was quick to set the early pace before Johnny Cecotto went top on his fourth lap and dipped under 1m22s. Daniel Abt improved on the Venezuelan’s laptime, but soon after that Cecotto found some extra pace to claim the top spot again. But to no avail: Palmer was on a mission and lapped the track in a 1:20.774. Cecotto tried to deny P1 to Palmer but he hit a bit of traffic at the new chicane hence ruining his efforts. In the dying stages, Evans who had spent the first seven minutes of the sixteen minute long session without a laptime put his head down and edged Cecotto out of P2, but still remained four tenths clear from Palmer.

Palmer fastest in opening GP2 session at Monaco
Series leader Jolyon Palmer has set the record straight in this morning’s free practice: the Briton posted the quickest laptime with a blazing 1:20.707, three tenths faster than Johnny Cecotto. Monegasque Stéphane Richelmi finished third in the other DAMS car.

The session opened in overcast conditions. All cars fed onto the track on soft Pirelli tires with Palmer sitting pretty at the top of the standings early on. As the clock continued to tick down, the track improved and so did the lap times. Cecotto looked pretty fast, but traffic at La Rascasse meant he could not dip under 1m22s. That was not the case for Felipe Nasr: the Brazilian set a laptime of 1:21.949, but Coletti snatched the top spot going four hundredths faster than the Carlin man.

Kurt Busch goes up in flames
Kurt Busch “joined the club,” in Tony Kanaan’s words, with a crash in practice at Indianapolis this week.

He hit the wall in Turn 2 on Monday, leaving his car in pieces and flames.

Now the NASCAR driver will have to race in a backup car Sunday when he attempts to run both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. Only 13 times has the double been attempted, and only six times on the same day. (The races were on separate dates from 1961 to 1973).

Australian-based British driver James Winslow has finalized a deal to compete in the prestigious 24-Hours of Le Mans. The multiple international open-wheel champion will join the successful Caterham entry as part of the Greaves Motorsport operation for an assault on the twice-around-the-clock endurance classic in the hotly contested LMP2 class aboard the #42 Caterham Zytek-Nissan.

Initially expected to join the ranks of the GTE class, Winslow admitted that his dream of competing at the Le Mans 24 Hour would only reach maturity behind the wheel of a prototype.

“For as long as I could remember I’ve wanted to drive at Le Mans, but the dream was always to be behind the wheel of an open cockpit prototype,” the race winning Asian Le Mans Series LMP2 driver explained.

Wide-Open Field Set for 12th Annual Freedom 100 at Indianapolis
Last year's 4-wide Freedom 100 photo finish won by Peter Dempsey on the outside
Equality is one of the talking points as the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires field heads back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week for its signature event, the Freedom 100, on the historic 2.5-mile oval. Four drivers already have tasted the fruits of victory during the opening six races - Zach Veach, Gabby Chaves, Matthew Brabham and, most recently, Luiz Razia - and several other contenders, including highly rated Europeans Jack Harvey and Alex Baron, have their sights firmly set on adding their names to that roster as the 14-round campaign marks its halfway point with the first of three visits this season to oval tracks.

Last year's Freedom 100 was settled only in the final few inches of a spectacular race when Peter Dempsey, who was running fourth on the entrance to Turn Four on the last lap, drafted to the outside to claim the victory for Belardi Auto Racing by 0.0026 second in a blanket four-abreast finish - the closest in the storied history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Montoya says IndyCar more intense than NASCAR
Juan Montoya
Juan Pablo Montoya, even amid his NASCAR struggles, always seemed relaxed away from the track, laughing, telling stories and freely giving opinions on racing topics.

So to see him relaxed Tuesday during a lunch with Charlotte media was no big surprise. Except when he talked about his own performance and his own racing situation, there seemed to be a little more excitement, a little more optimism.

That shouldn’t be a surprise. Montoya made a name for himself in open-wheel racing. He won the 2000 Indianapolis 500, and now for the first time since then, the former CART champion and Formula One race winner is back at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in an Indy car.

Monaco to be 'more interesting than usual' - Perez
Sergio Perez
(GMM)  Although a critic of F1's new era, Sergio Perez admits this weekend's Monaco grand prix will be "more interesting than usual".

Two weeks ago in Spain, the Mexican was highly critical of the 2014 season so far, saying it is "embarrassing" that GP2 cars are now rivaling F1 for laptime.

However, he expects drivers grappling with their high-torque turbo-powered cars between the Armco at tight and twisty Monaco will be a spectacle.

"It will be really interesting here," Perez said in the Principality on Wednesday.
