AR1 Carb Day Notebook
Helio Castroneves receives congratulations from team owner Roger Penske after winning the Tag Heuer Pit Stop Challenge
It was an action-packed Coors Light Carb Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Below, is a short update of a few of the happenings.

I spent a few minutes sitting on the pit wall during the Tag Heuer Pit Stop Challenge talking to Chip Ganassi Racing Teams managing director Mike Hull. Hull was his usual talkative self, and he went to great lengths to compliment the teamwork and preparation of the four Ganassi drivers Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Charlie Kimball and Sage Karam. Noting that each driver will need to make 7-9 pit stops Sunday, and that the team will need to execute those stops successfully to win, I got the sense the Ganassi squad is quietly very confident headed into Sunday.

Castroneves' team wins the pitstop competition
Team Penske hopes a successful Coors Light Carb Day will indicate a good Indianapolis 500 race day.

Reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion Will Power, who will start the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race from the middle of the front row, topped the speed chart for the final practice session, the last opportunity for teams to fine-tune their cars before race day May 24.

Power, driving the No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, topped the speed chart with a quick lap of 229.020 mph, with pole-sitter Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing (228.585 mph) and NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing's Tony Kanaan (228.490) right behind.

New Biotelemetry Technology Will Get "Inside" Drivers During ABC's Indianapolis 500 Telecast
Auto racing has long been known to be physically stressful for drivers, especially a race of such major intensity as the Indianapolis 500. Now, television viewers will have data to show just how physically intense it is.

ABC’s telecast of Sunday’s 99th Indianapolis 500 will introduce the use of biotelemetry, a high-tech sensing system that will, in real time, give viewers the heart and respiration rate as well as calorie burn rate of two drivers competing in the race.

Jack Harvey wins anticlimactic Freedom 100
Englishman Jack Harvey has been too often the bridesmaid in his year and a half of competition in Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, but he was out in front when it mattered in this afternoon's Freedom 100 Presented by Allied Building Products at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The race was held in glorious weather conditions in front of a sizable Coors Light Carb Day crowd, part of the build-up toward Sunday's 99th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian teammates Ethan Ringel, Scott Anderson and RC Enerson completed a sweep of the top four positions as the race finished under caution after series points leader Ed Jones (Carlin) crashed out of seventh place in Turn Four with just three laps remaining.

Chevys dominate Indy 500 Carb Day
If today's speeds during Carb Day for the 99th Indy 500 are any indication, Sunday is going to be a long day for the Honda teams.  Will Power, lead driver for Penske Racing, drove his Chevy to a top speed of 229.020 MPH to lead the 1-hour practice session, which was the final chance for the drivers and teams to get their cars setup for race day.

Chevy drivers Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan and Simon Pagenaud were 2nd thru 4th with the Takuma Sato in 5th - the fastest of the Honda drivers.

Update from IMS
Will Power currently tops the time sheets.
With low humidity, a gentle breeze, and nary a cloud a sky, it's beautiful spring day here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As I write, Carb Day practice for the Verizon IndyCar is currently under caution for track inspection. Will Power tops the times sheets followed by the four Ganassi cars of Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Charlie Kimball and Sage Karam.

One thing we'll go ahead and pass along is that a few cars are sporting different liveries:

Monaco post-race GP2 quotes
Thoughts from Vandoorne, Rossi and Canamasas

GP2 Series: Stoffel, third win of the season for you. How does that feel?

Stoffel Vandoorne: Things are feeling quite special at the moment. I mean, winning in Monaco is probably one of the nicest races that you can win. To have achieved that is just great. It wasn’t easy. I had to fight for it so it makes it even better. Me and Rossi started on the prime tyres. Marciello and Pic were on the options, so we knew they were going to pit quite early. The risk was that there was going to be some traffic at some point. In the end, there was a VSC about 20 laps from the end I think. It was just on the limit to box or not with the prime tyres. In the end, it seems that it was the right decision to box then. We had to make the super soft to last until the end. It was not that easy: O drove quite slow in the beginning, making sure I didn’t kill the tyres. Then, I had some left in the end to push.

250 MPH barrier at Indy
The relatively flat corners at Indy are not conducive to a 250 MPH lap
A reader asks, Dear AR1.com, I know there is a lot of talk about breaking the lap record of 239.260 MPH set by Arie Luyendyk at Indy in a 2005 CART IndyCar but given the new Dallara IndyCar is inferior to the 10-year old CART IndyCar cars, is there any chance of that happening and what about the 250 MPH barrier, which would be huge? Dan Black, Missouri

Hamilton contract a blow for Rosberg - Prost
Rosberg has to reflect what his worth is after Hamilton signed a huge deal with Mercedes
(GMM)  Lewis Hamilton's new contract is a psychological blow to Nico Rosberg.

That is the view of F1 legend Alain Prost.

Earlier this week, Mercedes announced a new three-year contract for Hamilton, the reigning world champion.  Multiple sources estimated the deal at up to an incredible $50 million per season -- and possibly more.

Vandoorne over Rossi in Monaco
From left, Rossi, Vandoorne and Canamasas
McLaren tester Stoffel Vandoorne has claimed his third victory of the season in the most glamorous of surroundings, implementing the perfect strategy to win the feature race this morning in Monaco ahead of Alexander Rossi and Sergio Canamasas.

The Belgian had to wait for his moment, jumping the American in the pits to switch positions during a race-long battle between the pair, as well as manage the challenge of the others around them. At the start it was Raffaele Marciello who was in the pound seat, using his soft tires to jump poleman Rossi into Ste Devote, while Vandoorne tried but failed to get past the soft shod Arthur Pic, making do with P4 ahead of Jordan King, Sergey Sirotkin, Julian Leal and Canamasas as the field headed up the hill towards Casino.

Documents: Kurt Busch's ex-girlfriend used veterans' charity as bank
The truth about the kind of person Driscoll (L) is beginning to come out
The truth about the kind of person Driscoll (L) is beginning to come out
An ESPN Outside the Lines investigation has found several questionable practices at the Armed Forces Foundation charity under Patricia Driscoll's (CEO) direction in the past decade. Driscoll is the former girlfriend of NASCAR driver #41-Kurt Busch. The couple made headlines last year when Driscoll accused Busch of strangling her and smashing her head into a wall during an argument.

Driscoll was recognized as president of the Armed Forces Foundation, a charity aligned with NASCAR and various sports-related entities that aims to help veterans in need. Documents show the Armed Forces Foundation has, in effect, been repeatedly used as a bank to lend money for or pay various personal expenses, including bills for a private company Driscoll owns.

NASCAR racers notice IndyCar's safety team
The quick response of the IndyCar Series safety team in saving James Hinchcliffe from suffering catastrophic blood loss in his accident Monday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway demonstrated the critical role the series-hired safety team plays in driver care. NASCAR doesn't have its own safety team, instead relying on the tracks to hire the doctors and emergency medical technicians who treat the drivers.

While NASCAR requires an emergency response plan, holds an annual safety worker summit as well as weekly meetings at the tracks hosting each event and can dictate staffing requirements to the tracks, NASCAR's traveling medical staff consists primarily of nurses who keep driver files and know their medical histories. Drivers talked with NASCAR after Kyle Busch's accident earlier this year about the week-to-week staffing levels and training. Busch suffered a broken right leg and broken left foot in an accident Feb. 21 at Daytona International Speedway in one of the most crushing wrecks in recent years.

DTM - 'Class One' Materializes
DTM Class One touring car series to get started in 2018
On the day after the 2015 Nurburgring 24h Race, the 'Class One' steering committee, consisting of representatives of the Japanese GTA, the American IMSA and the DTM umbrella organization ITR e.V., held its first meeting of the year and made ground-breaking decisions.

In September 2014, the three organizations agreed upon basic key parameters of the technical regulations and now, they passed the engine regulations. In addition, they succeeded in defining the aerodynamics specs, with the details now having to be tested and developed to find out if they can be technically realized. The 'Class One' cars will resemble today’s DTM and GTA vehicles in the areas body and aerodynamics a lot. The touring cars will be powered by new turbo charged four-cylinder engines producing about 600bhp.
