Indy 500 post-race notes
It was a good month for J.R. Hildebrand
Below, are a few post-Indianapolis 500 notes bullet point style.

• AFS Chip Ganassi Racing driver Sebastian Saavedra was treated for a right foot contusion. He will undergo further evaluation prior to being cleared to drive
• CFH Racing’s J.R. Hildebrand quietly turned in a strong effort finishing 8th, 1 spot ahead of teammate Josef Newgarden

• A practice crash last Sunday, a month-long struggle to find speed and a lap 112 crash that relegated him to a 30th place finish, made this May a rather forgettable one for 2013 and 2014 pole winner Ed Carpenter.

Indy 500 raceday notes
The crowd is making its way into IMS
It's about 10 a.m. here at IMS. Below, are a few notes to help get you ready for today's Indy 500:

***Our math says the fuel windows will be somewhere in the range of 30-33 green flag laps

***In terms of fuel-mileage, we expect Honda to the advantage over Chevy by about 1.5-2 laps per stint.

***The window for the final pit stop open on lap 167. Theoretically, if someone is saving fuel it could be sooner. But 167 seems to be the number.

Gossage worried about flying IndyCars
IndyCars have been flying for years
Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage said he plans to talk Monday with IndyCar competition president Derrick Walker about whether the series will consider making aerodynamic changes to slow the cars.

"I started to call Derrick the other day, and I thought, ‘They’ve got their hands full with the biggest race of the year," Gossage told NBC Sports. "I'm sure they’re thinking about all the races and what they need to do to take care of these cars and these drivers."

Good morning from Indy (Update) UPDATE Just as I post a report saying rain is not forecast for today what happens? It starts raining.

There is currently a spitting-type rain at IMS which we expect to pass. We'll keep you updated.

Brian C. reporting from IMS

Scott Dixon will lead the field of 33 to the green flag in today's 99th running of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing
Good morning from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s about 6:30 a.m. on a cool, slightly overcast morning with temperatures in the mid-60s. As we look out of the media center toward the northeast, the sun is beginning to rise over the turn 3 grandstands. The AR1 Central Indiana Weather Bureau expects temperatures to climb in the high 70s by the time we see the green flag around 12:05 E.T.

And although this is central Indiana, where the weather forecast seems to change every few minutes, the most recent forecast calls for almost zero chance of rain during the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500.

The IndyCar Series, set for a visit to Boston on Labor Day weekend 2016, is expected to generate $35 million to $45 million in revenue and fill more than 44,000 hotel beds over the holiday weekend, Mayor Martin J. Walsh said Friday.

“It’s a great opportunity for the city of Boston,’’ said Walsh. “It’s going to put us [in] the international spotlight. It’s a great way to showcase our city.’’

AR1 catches up with former Indy 500 competitors
2015 is the thirtieth anniversary of Danny Sullivan’s Spin and Win.
The Indy 500 is full of traditions: the Indy 500 Gordon bagpipers, the Purdue Marching Band, 33 drivers in 11 rows, the singing of Back Home again in Indiana and the release of the balloons at the start of the race to name a few.

Over the past few days, we here at AutoRacing1 have enjoyed relishing in the history of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing with a few of the competitors who have helped make this event what it is. One such individual race fans surely remember is Danny Sullivan. This year is the thirtieth anniversary of Sullivan's 1985 'Spin and Win.' Driving the #5 Miller American March/85C Cosworth for Roger Penske, Sullivan was running second on lap 120, when he moved to the inside of leader Mario Andretti entering turn 1.

It’s a happy day for Richie Stanaway: the rookie has claimed his and his team’s maiden GP2 win controlling the race from start to finish with a display of maturity and calm driving. Behind him, Raffaele Marciello and rookie Sergey Sirotkin completed the podium.

The Kiwi made quick work to build a two second gap which was enough to keep the Italian at bay. Behind the pair, Sirotkin made a great start to move past Julian Leal and take third.

IndyCar race seen as grand for Boston
Boston Seaport District
Bringing the sights and sounds of IndyCar to the streets of the Seaport District will be a major win-win for both the racing organization and the city, insiders say, providing Boston with a Labor Day revenue boost and introducing the high-octane sport to a broad new fan base.

"You can see races on television, but you can’t get the taste or flavor of the sport until you’re there and you see the speed of the cars, the braking ability of the cars and what these drivers can do,” said former pro IndyCar driver and ESPN analyst Scott Goodyear. “Any time you can get your product in front of a new market, it is going to grow the fan base and every sport is looking to do that."

Sebastian Vettel takes it to Mercedes in final practice
Sebastian Vettel takes it to Mercedes in final practice

Sebastian Vettel heads into qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix poised to take the fight for pole position to Mercedes after storming to the fastest time in final free practice.

Ferrari's Vettel emerged as the man to beat in FP3, his final effort toppling the Mercedes' by stopping the clock at 1min 16.143secs.

Indeed, Mercedes had looked comfortable out front for much of the session, but Nico Rosberg's response to Vettel's fast lap would leave him two tenths behind the Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton was more than half a second behind the German as he aborted his last runs due to traffic and yellow flags.
