The first recall addresses “a potential intermittent electrical connection in the steering gear” that Ford says "might result in the loss of electric power-steering assist while driving." The automaker says four minor accidents have been traced to the issue, with no injuries involved. The Detroit circuit is almost all concrete now
The Detroit circuit is almost all concrete now
Spectators and competitors will notice and benefit from infrastructure improvements on Belle Isle when they arrive for the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans.

The work, which since last year's Verizon IndyCar Series doubleheader includes more than $4 million in paving of the 2.35-mile street circuit and $250,000 in drainage improvements, is part of the long-term public-private partnership revitalization initiative started in 2007. The state Department of Natural Resources has operated Belle Isle Park as a state park since February 2014.

"We have a brand new racetrack with almost a mile of new pavement; our track is almost entirely concrete. It will be high grip and we know in combination with aero kits fans will see records fall every day," Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix chairman Bud Denker said.

Prototype 18-inch F1 tires taken for a spin in Monaco
18 inch F1 wheels on a GP2 car
Last week’s Monaco Grand Prix delivered Nico Rosberg his third victory in a row at the track, and prior to the race the Circuit de Monaco was also host to 18-inch tire demonstrations for two F1 feeder championships. Pirelli showed off its larger diameter race-ready GP2 rubber while Renault Sport Technologies fielded a Formula Renault 3.5 car fitted with 18-inch Michelin tires. These demonstrations are significant given both tire makers’ views on the direction F1 tire evolution should take, a topic of particular interest now that tenders are open for F1 tire supply between 2017 and 2019.

Pirelli has tested race-ready 18-inch GP2 tires during the course of this year and displayed these on 22 May. The tires shown in Monaco were based on Pirelli’s supersoft compound and of a similar size to those tested on a Lotus F1 car following last year’s British Grand Prix. The tires were fitted to the GP2 development car and driven on two demonstration laps by Martin Brundle.

The Indy 500 made NASCAR look bad
Carl Edwards won Charlotte on strategy. Montoya won Indy on guts
On May 21, at Charlotte Motor Speedway in what NASCAR officials call "a driver availability," i.e., a media conference, Kevin Harvick, the reigning Sprint Cup champion, said, "Wait a second. Let’s clarify the 'aero push.' Does anybody watch Formula One? It's been there for years. It's in IndyCars. It's in racing. If you run behind one of your colleagues … you're going to have an aero push.

"It's never going to get fixed."

In other words, live with it.

Racer, team owner, auto magnate Roger Penske to be inducted into Automotive Hall of Fame
Roger Penske and his wife with his driver Juan Montoya
Roger Penske and his wife Kathy with his driver Juan Montoya
Fifteen Indianapolis 500 wins (sixteen wins as of 5/24/15), hundreds of professional race wins overall, dozens of national championships, all in a wide range of motorsports, from Formula 1 to Trans-Am, Can-Am and more. Even the best drivers can but dare to dream of such a record; as an owner, though, Roger Penske made all that happen and more, and it's in part for those accomplishments that the Automotive Hall of Fame will induct him into its ranks this summer.

Which is not to say that Penske has only seen racing success as a team owner. In his teens, the Ohio native began refurbishing older cars and selling them for a profit, and he quickly graduated to buying and selling last year's race cars and in turn figuring out how to keep them competitive. By the time he entered Lehigh University, he'd owned Jaguars and Mercedes-Benzes, and soon he traded one of the latter-a gullwing, no less-for a competition Corvette so he could go racing himself, as he related to Jim Donnelly in Hemmings Muscle Machines #111.

Montoya collects $2.45 million for Indy 500 win
Montoya and the Borg Warner Trophy
Juan Pablo Montoya earned $2,449,055 from an overall purse of $13,397,315 for his victory Sunday, May 24, in the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In driving his No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet to victory, Montoya held off reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion and teammate Will Power by 0.1046 of a second – the fourth-closest finish in race history. The Penske pair battled Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in a thrilling final 15 laps. This marks Montoya’s second Indianapolis 500 win, as the Colombian won "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" as a rookie in 2000.

Five of the race’s 37 lead changes occurred in the last 15 laps following a restart when Montoya, who led four times for a total of nine laps, passed Dixon in Turn 1 for second place before overtaking Power exiting Turn 4 to capture the lead on Lap 197. He held the lead for the remainder of the 200-lap event. The nine laps led by Montoya is the third-fewest laps led by a winner. Dan Wheldon led one lap in 2011 and Joe Dawson led two laps in 1912.

Pirelli Ready To Bid For New Formula One Contract

Tronchetti said, "We intend to stay if the regulations are the ones we agree upon, and if the costs are affordable, and the guarantees we want to have in the contracts are accepted." Tronchetti Provera said that "he was against a proposal to allow teams a free choice of dry tire compounds" but suggested there could be a "satisfactory compromise."

F1 Refueling Proposals Likely To Be Dropped As Teams Reveal Concerns Over Costs
Why can't F1 use gravity fed fuel and one man per tire?
Proposals to reintroduce refueling into F1 are "likely to be dropped because of a lack of support," according to Andrew Benson of the BBC. The idea to bring back refueling, which was last used in '09, came out of a rule-making strategy group meeting of leading teams and officials. But further talks this week have revealed "major opposition, with teams concerned about the costs."

F1 is "pressing ahead with other changes" planned for '17 to speed up the cars. Mercedes Exec Dir Toto Wolff said, "It is going to be back to the quickest cars on the planet with the most efficient energy usage, with wider tires, with driver aids removed, with driver-controlled starts back again. There is so much good stuff happening." None of the teams are "in favor of refuelling, which was banned on grounds of cost, safety and because it reduced the amount of on-track overtaking." BBC.

"The Indy 500 is the longest IndyCar race of the season, and like the Rolex 24 and Sebring, it requires a very measured, disciplined approach. You have to keep the big picture in mind, and I find that works well in sports car racing, too. It’s great preparation for Indy every year."

Obviously. Bell started 23rd in his Dreyer & Reinbold Kingdom Racing Chevrolet-Dallara, and finished a solid 14th, after running in the top 10.

Toronto Indy race lands Molson Coors Beer sponsorship
Under CART the Toronto race was three times bigger than it is today and Molson sponsorship was a big part of that . Here in 2001 Michael Andretti (C) celebrates one of his 7 Toronto wins and AR1.com was there
Molson Coors is returning to the Indy. Organizers of the Honda Indy Toronto today announced a new partnership with Molson Coors Canada to serve as the official beer and cider of Ontario's largest annual sporting event, through 2017.

"Toronto has an important place in the history of auto racing in Canada and Molson Coors has been a big part of that," said Charlie Johnstone, President of the Honda Indy Toronto. "We are thrilled to welcome them back as a major partner of the event."

This is the first year that Molson Coors will be associated with the event since founding and holding title sponsorship of the event from 1986 to 2006. Indy fans will now be able to responsibly enjoy the event with the great brand portfolio of Molson Coors, including Coors Light, Molson Canadian, Creemore Lot 9 Pilsner, Granville Island Hey Day Hefeweizen, Molson Canadian Cider and Heineken.

Honda drivers have a 'frustrating Indy 500'
The Chevy powered cars, like Indy 500 winner Juan Montoya above, have smoked the Hondas all year long
Graham Rahal played catch-up for 3 hours and 5 minutes Sunday afternoon at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, pushing and charging and scraping for every last speck of speed.

In the end he'd chase the leaders for 500 miles. Problem was: He could've chased for 500 more and still never closed the gap.

Why? Because Rahal was racing the 99th edition of the Indianapolis 500 with one arm tied behind his back. That's life when you're running a Honda engine on a day – a month, really – that was thoroughly conquered by Chevrolet.

Crampton, Beckman, Enders take Topeka wins
Funny Car racer Jack Beckman finished off a record-setting weekend of racing at Heartland Park Topeka Sunday by claiming a victory over category icon John Force at the NHRA Kansas Nationals.

Richie Crampton (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

Beckman used a pair of 3.9-second runs to outrun Courtney Force and John Hale in earlier rounds and then beat Del Worsham in a close semifinal before speeding to another three-second run to oust the 16-time world champ in the final round. Prior to that, Beckman clocked three-second runs in two of the three rounds of qualifying on Friday and Saturday.
