COTA officials today after their stupidity cost them $25.9 million
Circuit of the Americas is out $25.9 million in state funding for its Formula 1 race as the Texas State Capitol ended its legislative session on May 27 without passing legislation that would have approved an annual request originally denied on a technicality.
The money was to have come from the state's Major Events Reimbursement Program to help offset costs from the 2018 F1 United States Grand Prix. The funds were expected to be paid to the track -- that is, until COTA officials missed a Sept. 24, 2018, deadline for submitting a human trafficking prevention plan as part of its annual application for the funds.
Smith Family Looking To Take SMI Private opening door for sale of NASCAR (2nd Update)
Bruton and son Marcus Smith, taking SMI private. The France family did the same with ISC and its tracks. When it comes time for a buyout of the entire bundle of NASCAR and all the tracks, there will be no shareholders in the way.
UPDATE Something interesting is happening in the business of racing. In April, Sonic Financial, the majority owner of racetrack business Speedway Motorsports(NYSE:TRK), offered to take Speedway private. This comes just a few months after NASCAR offered to buy out Speedway Motorsports' rival International Speedway(NASDAQ:ISCA). These buyout offers come after years of disappointing ticket sales from the racetracks and declining NASCAR TV ratings.
Speedway's take-private offer comes from the company's controlling shareholder at a price below where the stock had been trading in the recent past. Are insiders trying to pull one over on shareholders, or does the offer represent a fair deal?
The buyout offer
On April 23, Speedway Motorsports received a letter from Sonic Financial offering $18 per share in cash for the shares not already owned by Sonic Financial, O. Bruton Smith, the founder and executive chairman of Speedway Motorsports, or his family. The stock closed on April 22 at $13.59. Sonic, Smith, and his family already control over 70% of Speedway's voting power.
Patricio O'Ward after failing to qualify for the Indy 500
UPDATE After not even qualifying for the biggest race in the world, the Indy 500, Patricio O'Ward, in hindsight, should have taken the Andretti Autosport offer of 8 races.
Word has it he might still be banging his head against a wall, but he does have Red Bull backing him now, and they could take him to F1. O'Ward, Alonso and Max Chilton, all F1 wanna-bees, were not fast enough to make the Indy 500 field.
(GMM) Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri has apologized publicly for the errors that messed up local driver Charles Leclerc's qualifying in Monaco.
The Monaco born 21-year-old was fastest in the final practice session before qualifying, only to be knocked out in Q1 when Ferrari strategists decided not to let him back out of the pits to save tires.
Leclerc was livid, saying: "It's very difficult to take. I need some explanations."

Ford GT program to shut down operations (2nd Update)
Ford confirms it is pulling the plug
UPDATE This news by Ford from April was followed by BMW confirming that its FIA WEC factory commitments will also end next month after just one season with its MTEK-run M8 GTEs. That, as expected, brings the likely number of factory-backed FIA WEC GTE Pro cars for the 2019/20 season to just six, with only a pair apiece from Aston Martin Racing, Porsche GT Team and AF Corse now expected.
With near-zero fans at most sportscars races except LeMans, Long Beach and Sebring there is not much value there for manufacturers.

Alexander Rossi has many titles -- 2016 Indy 500 winner, 5-time IndyCar race winner, dog dad.
More specifically, Rossi is a dog dad to Brunner George, a mini golden doodle. Rossi and his girlfriend got Brunner from a breeder in Salt Lake City about a year and a half ago. He said they chose the breed because they wanted a dog that would be easy to travel with and not shed. They also wanted a “smallish” dog.
Chris Minot down on ground after being struck hard by tire

Minot was a part of the pit-crew servicing Jordan King for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500. On lap sixty-nine of the race, King pulled into the pit-lane and unfortunately collided with a tire that was waiting for him in his pit-box. The tire was sent careering into Minot, the right-front tire changer, with the brunt of the impact being taken by Minot’s left leg.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing can confirm that Thomas Laurent will join the team as its test and reserve driver for the 2019-2020 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season.
Thomas, 21, has emerged as a rising star of endurance racing and already has a Le Mans podium to his name, finishing second as a teenager in 2017. That impressive performance paved the way for his first experience of the TS050 HYBRID, during the WEC rookie test in Bahrain in December of the same year.
(GMM) Masashi Yamamoto says the failed McLaren collaboration was Honda's "biggest lesson" since the Japanese marque returned to Formula 1.
In Monaco, the Honda-powered Red Bull of Max Verstappen diced for the race lead with winner Lewis Hamilton. He didn't even finish on the podium, but Yamamoto says it is one of the important "small victories".
"We have learned that the most important thing is to celebrate the small victories as steps forward," Yamamoto, Honda's F1 boss, told Speed Week.
Italian-French-American megamerger that would rattle the global auto industry
The late Sergio Marchionne tried to merge Fiat with GM, now it could happen with Renault
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV proposed a roughly $40 billion merger with French rival Renault SA, RNO -0.32% a deal that if completed would create the third-largest auto maker by production and scramble an industry that has been seeking scale to cope with fast-globalizing markets and rapidly changing technology.
If Renault and Fiat Chrysler consummate a deal, it would create a car company with annual vehicle production of almost nine million passenger cars and light trucks. Such a combination would rank behind just Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Co. but ahead of General Motors Co. Including Renault’s alliance partners, Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. , group output would swell to around 15 million, far ahead of the pack.

(GMM) Mattia Binotto says Ferrari is working on a plan to get back up to speed with Mercedes.
