A.J. Foyt: Newly-designed IndyCar 'very ugly' (Amen)
The Butt Bumpers have turned the already hideous looking Dallara into a monstrosity. AR1 suggests they be removed from the cars altogether
A.J. Foyt won't mince words when he talks about the current Dallara DW12 Indy Car.

"I think the cars are very ugly," said Foyt, owner of A.J. Foyt Racing and motorsports legend. "They are not open-wheel cars. Hopefully the series will do away with them."

Foyt, who runs Takuma Sato and Jack Hawksworth in the Verizon IndyCar Series, was talking at Belle Isle before Sunday's Race 2 of "Chevy Dual in Detroit."

Today's Indy Car rear wheels are semi-enclosed by the body work, not open, as in the traditional mold of a single-seat formula car.

Jamie Green unstoppable at Lausitzring
Jamie Green doubles up in Germany
Jamie Green doubles up in Germany

All the doubts have gone. Three years after moving from Mercedes-Benz to Audi, things are really going well for Jamie Green. In a dominant way, the Audi driver also secured himself the second race win at Lausitzring, his third victory in the still-young motorsport season. "The perfect start into the season," Green enthused. "A dream!" Audi also dominated proceedings in race two. Mattias Ekstrom and Miguel Molina took the remaining podium slots. In total, seven of the eight Audi drivers made it into the top ten. In sixth position, Daniel Juncadella was the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver while Maxime Martin was the fastest BMW driver in eighth.

Pre-Race Detroit Update UPDATE No surprise here. INDYCAR has declared a wet start for today's race.

05/31/15 We are getting close to the start of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit Presented by Quicken Loans Duel 2 here on Belle Isle. While the rain is still steady, it has lightened up since the end of the 2nd qualifying session that was canceled. Latest reports from the tireless staff at AR1's Southeastern Michigan Weather Bureau say that the rain should end around 4 p.m. local time.

With it still raining, we imagine everyone will start on the wet tires.  When and if it stops raining, the tire gamble and strategy will come into play.  Then we will see what effect the 51 degree temperatures will have on the tires and their ability to maintain grip.

A final note: with the rain expect fuel windows to be longer. This could turn into a two-stopper should things go the full race distance. Of course, if it’s a timed race, then who knows how that will change strategy.

Update from Detroit UPDATE I talked with Dale, engineer with Firestone this morning. They shipped more wet tires to Detroit overnight so the teams could have 1 extra set of wets.  Dale also reiterated what Jon Beekhuis told me in that the cold temperatures here in Detroit won't affect the tire performance.

Some IndyCar teams just did a system test and the track was OK to run on. The  tires were even warm when they came back to the pits, Dale stated.

They are also working on a new compound for the wets. originally the new tire was going to be in Toronto but that has been moved back to Mid Ohio.

Good morning everyone. Brian C. here.

Although I am not in Detroit, I have spoken with AR1's Lucille Dust who said the area sustained heavy rains overnight. With qualifying scheduled to begin around 11:30 a.m., there is the possibility the starting lineup for today's Dual 2 of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit Presented By Quicken Loans will be determined by Verizon IndyCar Series entrant standings.

Below, you will find the lineup should the cars start on entrant points and the full updated season entrant standings after yesterday's Dual 1.

Green victorious at Lausitzring, Germany.
Jamie Green takes the checkered
Jamie Green takes the checkered
The opposition came off second-best in the DTM race at the Lausitzring on Saturday as four Audi drivers decided the battle for victory in the third race of the season among themselves. Jamie Green, who had already won the first race of the 2015 season at the Hockenheimring was first across the line after 32 laps. He had a margin of 4.261 seconds from second-placed Edoardo Mortara. Another Hockenheim race winner, Mattias Ekström, claimed the final spot on the podium.

"I am particularly proud of this victory," Green said. "First of all, I am not one hundred percent fit due to illness, and secondly, I had to drive the entire race without DRS." The Brit had the following explanation for the fact that it was still enough for his second win: "My Audi RS 5 DTM perfectly suits my driving style, a dream start into the season. And I want to add to that tomorrow."

Kanaan mindful of need to attract young fans
Tony Kanaan in the Taylor Swift car this weekend. Kanaan recognizes the need to attract young people to the sport, but as AR1.com has written many times, that is never going to happen until motorsports proposes to the NCAA to make go-kart racing a sanctioned sport in high schools and colleges
Whether he knew it or not, Tony Kanaan, the 40-year-old IndyCar driver from Brazil, was quoting Taylor Swift even before he hopped in her car Saturday afternoon.

Actually, it's Chip Ganassi's car. But this weekend at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, the No. 10 Chevrolet is unmistakably Swift's, too, with a new paint scheme – powder blue with pink highlights and a pair of sunglasses - advertising her "1989 World Tour," which made a pit stop Saturday night at Ford Field.

And there's no mistaking the Ganassi race team's intentions here, either. IndyCar racing - like just about every other sports entity - is trying to stay relevant in an oversaturated sports marketplace, tapping into the coveted 18-to-34 marketing demographic whenever possible.

The IndyCar circuit is "on a high right now," Kanaan insisted, referring to a successful Memorial Day weekend, where the Indianapolis 500 saw a ratings bump after a crash-filled week of track controversy, outdrawing the NASCAR nightcap - the Coca-Cola 600 - for the first time in a decade.

IndyCar racing in Boston fast became a reality
So wait, you’re telling me there’s a huge auto race coming to town a little more than a year from now and those cars will travel a 2.2-mile course at speeds that top out at around 180 miles an hour? Here? On the streets of downtown Boston, where 17th-century cow paths etched our roadways?

I know next to nothing about racecars or auto races or fuel injectors, chassis, superchargers, or Farfegnugen. But I do know, in my 45 years of tooling around downtown Boston, first in a 1970 Ford Maverick with Hurst shifter, I’ve never once been able to go faster than 28 miles an hour. So count me in. This excites me. I’ll pay just to see a car go that fast on our streets without hitting a traffic jam, pothole, toll booth, or political stonewall.

Buescher Extends Xfinity Points Lead With Dover Win
Chris Buescher lurked for much of Saturday’s Buckle Up 200 at Dover International Speedway but led when it counted, and eventually moved teammate Darrell Wallace Jr. out of the way and stretched his fuel to take the checkered flag at the Monster Mile.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series leader started second behind Wallace Jr. and only led 10 laps as Joe Gibbs Racing's Matt Kenseth and Erik Jones stayed out front much of the race, with Kenseth finishing second. Sipping fuel, Buescher got his second XFINITY win of the season, as nerve-wracking as the finish was.

Afternoon report from Dover (Update) UPDATE Added final practice times below.

05/30/15 It’s about 1 p.m. here at Dover International Speedway. The second NASCAR Sprint Cup practice session of the day has begun. The session is currently red-flagged with rear end grease apparently having leaked onto the track from the #88 car of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Earlier, Darrell 'Bubba' Wallace secured the Coors Light Pole for the 34th Annual Buckle Up 200 presented by Click It or Ticket NASCAR XFINITY Series race scheduled to start around 2:30 p.m. ET.

I spent some time in the Sprint Cup garage area asking teams what the key was to getting the car right at Dover. As you probably know, the teams weren't exactly overly forthcoming with information about the specifics of set up. However, there are some themes that seem to be universal.

Morning Update #2 from Detroit
James Davison
I talked with the James Davison today after his Tudor series warm up this morning.  James has had a busy week with race cars, Sunday he was racing in the Indy 500 for Dale Coyne Racing.  After a miscall on pit road, his car was retired.  he said it was a bittersweet feeling about the 500.  "I was running in the top 3rd of the field with half of the race to go.  I was on course to finish in the Top 10.  It was a frustrating and Unfortunate ending."

He is qualified 8th for today's Pirelli world Challenge race, which he says is a faster car than the #007 Aston Martin in which he is qualified 16th for the Tudor United SportsCar race.

His career goal is to drive an Indy car and feels being in North America is his best opportunity for this to happen.  "I cannot risk losing my sports car ride at this time.  But IndyCar is where I want to be." He is living the race car driver dream in North America.

Good morning from Dover
Denny Hamlin
Good everyone morning. Brian Carroccio coming to you from yes, Dover International Speedway. It's a few minutes after 8 a.m. here in a relatively quiet media center. While temperatures are currently only in the low 70s, let me tell it is wicked humid outside.

Luckily, as the temperatures rise during the day (highs in the mid-80s), the humidity is suppose to burn off.

Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 FedEx Cares Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry won the Coors Light Pole Award for Sunday's 46th Annual FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks Race. It was Hamlin's 21st career pole and 3rd of 2015. Martin Truex Jr. will start second, Kyle Larson third.

Morning update from Detroit
Surprisingly the sun is up and today's 30 minute practice is early for a 3:40 pm race. This morning's conditions should be different from race conditions since rain is still in the forecast for this afternoon.

Will the Hondas get some great results this afternoon? It is pretty hard to beat the Penske's and the Ganassi's but Sato could end on the podium if all goes his way.

More updates after the morning practice at 8:55. Lucille Dust reporting from Detroit

Detroit track resurfacing done by a bunch of shoemakers
Indy 500 winner Juan Montoya. They resurfaced much of the Detroit track with concrete - it's bumpy as hell and needs to be diamond ground. Why wasn't this picked up before the race weekend?
Juan Pablo Montoya thought it had character.

Takuma Sato felt it was still bumpy, in spots, anyway.

Helio Castroneves, the Team Penske veteran, asked, "What bumps?"

Roger Penske's resurfacing of the Belle Isle racetrack, which now has a lot of new concrete, came under discussion after qualifying Friday for today's Race 1 of the "Chevy Dual in Detroit" Verizon IndyCar Series weekend.

"It has a lot of personality," said Penske's Montoya. "There are a couple good bumps; makes it tricky. It has a lot of character."
