Toyota: NASCAR Notes & Quotes
Denny Hamlin celebrates his June 2010 win at The Tricky Triangle
TOYOTA TIDBITS

POCONO SUITS HAMLIN:  Only one NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) driver has been more successful at Pocono Raceway than Camry driver Denny Hamlin, and Jeff Gordon has been racing at the 2.5-mile triangular track twice as long. Hamlin has four Pocono winner's trophies – including two in a Camry (August 2009 and June 2010) and two from the first year he visited the Pennsylvania race track in 2006. In 18 Pocono starts, the 34-year-old driver has won almost 25 percent of the races he has entered at the ‘Tricky Triangle,' and has recorded nine top-five and 12 top-10 finishes at the track, however he's looking for his first win since the track was repaved in 2012.

Bernie Ecclestone says F1 Strategy Group should be axed
Bernie Ecclestone believes it is time the Strategy Group was axed and for the FIA and Formula 1 Management to again call the shots.

F1's commercial rights holder feels the influence the leading teams now have on F1's future is having an adverse effect compared to the days when he and former FIA president Max Mosley were in charge.

Although such an alliance had its own problems, at present there is often too much self-interest from the major teams that prevents firm decisions from being taken.

Roberto Merhi heads to Canada with Manor Marussia
Roberto Merhi
LONDON, 3 June 2015 – After a successful race in Monaco, the young Spaniard is now heading to Montreal with the Manor Marussia F1 team to compete in Round 7 of the Formula 1 World Championship, the Grand Prix du Canada, this weekend.

Two weeks ago, Merhi achieved the best result of his rookie season so far in the Monaco Grand Prix, finishing in P16 and ahead of his Manor team-mate Will Stevens.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is a firm favourite for the fans and teams alike, as it is a real handful of a racetrack: low down force with long straights, big braking areas and plenty of challenges to keep the drivers on their toes.

A commercial that is slated to have more than 200 million impressions ($22M Broadcast Media Buy) and those ads are running in major prime time slots from stick and ball sports, motorsports and nightly network news.  For instance the Stanley Cup Finals, Belmont Stakes, NBA Finals, Golf, Movies, etc., not to mention every IndyCar race for the next month.  I have included some screen shots of the commercial below and the IndyCar looks fast and very different from a NASCAR, America’s dominant motorsport right now, and the driver has the looks as if they got him from central casting.

F1 bankrupts another promoter (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 (GMM)  The Russian grand prix has hit back at reports that its promoter is bankrupt.

Early this week, a Russian court declared that the government-owned 'Formula Sochi' company is bankrupt, even though a contract to host the race through 2020 is still in place.

But race organizers have hit back, insisting that the actual promoter since 2013 is OJSC Center Omega.

In a statement, the liquidation of Formula Sochi was confirmed, but Omega said it was not only in charge of the construction of Sochi Autodrom but also "the race-staging contract".

Castroneves thinks he would be a good fit for NASCAR

Three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves thinks he would look pretty sharp in a NASCAR Sprint Cup car.

Castroneves, who has driven for Team Penske since 1999 and has delivered 29 victories to its IndyCar program, says that he's always wanted to contribute to the NASCAR side of the Roger Penske racing operation. He's marveled at the success of Team Penske drivers Brad Keselowski -- a former Cup champion -- and teammate Joey Logano.

Penske, however, has made sure to put the brakes on those ideas.

IMSA Coordinating North American LMP2 Suppliers For 2017 Bid

Although the rules have yet to be finalized, manufacturers expect the limit to be ratified, and with everyone from Honda Performance Development, Multimatic, Riley Technologies, and a few new names interested in earning a supply contract, IMSA is looking at ways to include as many as possible in a single tender.

Trouble looming if Honda stays unhappy
Maybe it was a good thing that the Verizon IndyCar Series was in Belle Isle last weekend for the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit, because a little history lesson might be in order right about now.

The 2001 Detroit Grand Prix sanctioned by CART was the flashpoint for a political battle between the era's competing engine manufacturers that resulted in Honda announcing its withdrawal from the CART FedEx Championship Series just four months later.

They are pleading for lower engine bills and a fairer distribution of the sport's billion dollars in official income.

But the solution put forward by Bernie Ecclestone and the big teams is 'customer cars'.

All eyes on engine 'tokens' for Canada
Mercedes has so much power in their hybrid engine than everyone else they will not need to use any engine upgrade tokens to still cross the finish line first. Recall Mercedes developed the technology first and pushed for F1 to adopt it. It doubled the cost of F1 and ruined the sport, but Mercedes is winning and that is all they care about.
(GMM)  It is not clear if Ferrari and Honda will deploy their performance-upgraded engines this weekend in Canada.

The FIA this week has informed all the teams that the aforementioned two engine manufacturers have spent the first in-season 'tokens' of 2015 to up the speed of the respective power units.

In the rear of the two works Mercedes in Canada, meanwhile, will be fresh turbo V6s, but the German giant is yet to use any of its upgrade 'tokens'.

Auto Motor und Sport reports that the changes have all been made under the 'reliability' banner, meaning Mercedes still has 7 tokens up its sleeve.

NASCAR monitoring fuel cooling

"That's something we continue to look at, and with the heat in Dover, it was unbelievably hot, but that's something we have to continue to monitor anytime we're dealing with fuel," [NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve] O'Donnell said.

"You know we've had some incidents on pit road where we've taken some reactive measures from a safety standpoint. We'll sit down (Tuesday) and walk through that and look at the upcoming schedule and see what may or may not be happening on pit road as we go forward." NBC Sports

Montoya maintains points lead at halfway mark
Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya leads the Verizon IndyCar Series championship standings
Winning the Verizon IndyCar Series season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., and the 99th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race have helped Juan Pablo Montoya maintain the top spot in the championship standings through the halfway point of the season.

There have been seven different winners in the eight races.

The Indy 500 was worth double points, as is the season-ending GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 30, so Montoya collected a cool 101 points for his second victory on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. He's contributed three other top-five finishes to the total, and takes a 21-point lead over Team Penske teammate and reigning series champion Will Power into the June 6 Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Even consecutive 10th-place finishes in the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans last weekend didn't impact his standing as much as other title contenders.

Power sits second to Montoya in the championship.
Power placed fourth in Race 1 after setting the track qualifying lap record and earning the Verizon P1 Award for the pole position, and an 18th place in Race 2 after being involved in a late-race incident with teammate Helio Castroneves. It ended his streak of 32 consecutive races running at the finish.

Dixon, who won at Long Beach, lost two points to Montoya with fifth- and 20th-place finishes. He also was involved in a Race 2 incident with a teammate, Charlie Kimball.

"We gained points on Will with a 10th-place finish so it's not a terrible day," said Montoya, who started Race 2 from the pole based on entrant points after a downpour canceled qualifications and led a field-high 35 laps before dropping to fourth on a late restart and fading to 10th as the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet was running out of fuel.

Graham Rahal, who has posted four top-five finishes in the past five races, moved up to fourth in the standings. He recovered from a Lap 1 incident in Race 1 to finish third in the second race.

"Obviously, we would like to be winning but that's three podiums in the last four road and street course races and three in the past five overall for the Steak 'n Shake team so I'm pretty proud of where we are at," said the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver, who finished 19th in the championship in 2014. "We don't necessarily always have the fastest car, but if we can get to the end and have good finishes we can be right there."

Question on heart-rate before and after a crash
A reader writes, Dear AR1, I recall the ABC Indy 500 team commenting that James Jakes heart rate actually went down during the moments he was working to avoid contact with one of the race's crashes.  I haven't heard or read any further reporting on the dropping heart rate, and I find it counter-intuitive to conventional fight or flight reflexes.  Has AR1 heard anything further on the matter?  Keep up the great reporting of IndyCar. Bob Pagels, Downers Grove, IL

Dear Bob, You are exactly correct in that in normal people with anxiety or stress, the adrenalin can cause the heart rate to escalate; however, if he took a deep breath and held it to escape this moment or even paused his breathing  during this reaction time interval, his heart rate could have actually gone down.

Frustrated in the flyover states
Wet conditions made for a messy weekend in Detroit
Dear AR1:

As I watch the last few minutes of the IndyCar Detroit race on DVR, I have seldom been so angry at the gross inefficiency of race control with their pace car policies and incredible time wasted.  Also, while I respect the Holmatro crew, why are they so slow when no driver injury is involved? Note the discussion of "you get in, no you get in, no you get in" between Holmatro crew and Scott Dixon while no one tried to get off the track, so adding another yellow lap.

Drivers met with NASCAR on Saturday in Dover (Update) UPDATE Three-time NASCAR champion #14-Tony Stewart confirmed he was among a group of drivers that met with NASCAR officials for about two hours Saturday evening at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino adjacent to Dover International Speedway. Stewart came away impressed by the intent and encouraged by the content of the discussions. He said it was the first time in his 17 years in NASCAR racing he can remember this kind of informal get-together session between the sanctioning body and a group of drivers that also included Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick and Greg Biffle among others.

"They want to sit down, and they want to listen," Stewart told NASCAR.com on Sunday just prior to the FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks. I think it's just everyone staying on the same page which is good. It was a good thing, it was positive and makes me feel good about our sport that they want to keep everyone staying on the same page. I'd call it very, very positive." NASCAR.com
