BMW iNext
BMW iNext

Jaguar Land Rover and BMW Group today confirmed they are joining forces to develop next generation Electric Drive Units (EDUs) in a move that will support the advancement of electrification technologies, a central part of the automotive industry’s transition to an ACES (Autonomous, Connected, Electric, Shared) future.

The strategic collaboration will build on the considerable knowledge and expertise in electrification at both companies. Jaguar Land Rover has demonstrated its leading technical capability in bringing the world’s first premium battery electric SUV to market - the 2019 World Car of the Year, the Jaguar I-PACE, as well as plug-in hybrid models; and BMW Group bringing vast experience of developing and producing several generations of electric drive units in-house since it launched the BMW i3 in 2013.

Chevrolet Bolt EV fitted with prototype airless tires from Michelin
General Motors on Tuesday said it will test a prototype airless tire from Michelin.

The prototype is called the Uptis, short for Unique Puncture-proof Tire System, and GM plans to test them on a fleet of Chevrolet Volt EVs, with a view to making them available as early as 2024.

Airless tires, often called tweels, are nothing new. Michelin has been developing them for over a decade and already offers them for some commercial vehicles. Another company offering airless tires is America's Polaris, which has one designed for off-road applications.

Carlos Ghosn still maintains he was framed by Nissan as a way to stop the Renault/Nissan merger

The ongoing criminal and conspiratorial saga of Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s former chairman, was reignited once again by Ghosn’s wife Carole speaking with CNBC.

Ms. Ghosn has stood by her husband through his initial and subsequent arrests, and she has been vocal with her belief that Nissan’s board plotted with Japanese government officials to see the former chairman removed and jailed due to his plan for Nissan to merge with French automaker Renault. Carole Ghosn’s latest testimony came via an interview with CNBC’s “Closing Bell” where she stated “A few people within Nissan decided to get rid of my husband,” and “that that was the easiest way not to do the [Renault-Nissan] merger.”

Red Bull loses key engineer to Ferrari (Update)
Until Ferrari steals Aldo Costa back from Mercedes, Mercedes will continue to eat their lunch
Until Ferrari steals Aldo Costa back from Mercedes, Mercedes will continue to eat their lunch
UPDATE
Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko has confirmed that Ferrari have been making approaches for his staff as the Scuderia look to turn around their underwhelming start to the 2019 season. Ferrari have been looking to other teams for solutions after failing to win any of the first six races of the season.

Scuderia team principal Mattia Binotto recently confirmed that he was considering bringing Simone Resta back to the team.

Resta was chief designer at Ferrari before leaving for Sauber – since rebadged as Alfa Romeo – in May 2018.

Binotto has come under scrutiny for combining the roles of team principal and chief technical officer – with the SF90's below-par performance and Ferrari's questionable strategy calls seen as proof that he has bitten off more than he can chew.

Indy failure a 'lesson' for McLaren - Villeneuve

Zak Brown asked Roger Penske for last minute help. Penske gave them a setup, Andretti gave them shocks, but it all happened too late for the McLaren team to understand what they were given
(GMM) Jacques Villeneuve thinks McLaren will have learned "a lesson" by failing to qualify for the Indy 500.

With a full team entry for the first time, McLaren ran Fernando Alonso in 2019 but the car was not fast enough even for the top 30.

"I am sure this will be a lesson for everyone," Villeneuve, who won the Indy 500 in 1995 prior to switching to F1, told Spain's Marca.

"This is probably the most difficult competition and they wanted to do it alone," said the 1997 world champion.

Many believe McLaren, which is now run by Zak Brown, faltered at Indy because its main focus is on Formula 1.

"It's difficult for them," Stroll, 20, told La Presse. "I spent two seasons there.

The 20-year-old was delighted to leave struggling Williams at the end of last year, and sounded confident the team now owned by his father Lawrence was a good move.

However, he has scored just 4 of Racing Point's 17 points so far.

The reason? "A mixture of bad luck and adapting to the team," Canadian Stroll told La Presse.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has conceded that the Scuderia does not have any updates which will have a noticeable effect on its performance coming soon.

It implemented its first engine update earlier than usual, in Spain, to no avail, and is beset by downforce deficiencies.

Goodyear tire notes for Michigan and Texas
Michigan
Michigan
According to this week’s Goodyear media release about racing at Michigan, “Recent Monster Energy NASCAR Cup races at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway – where passes for the lead and passing in general were up – have the NASCAR world excited about what we might see at Michigan International Speedway this weekend. With this current Cup rules package, corner speeds will be up at Michigan and tight racing throughout the field should be the order of the day. The track is still relatively smooth since it was resurfaced in 2012 so Goodyear’s tire set-up at Michigan is now aligned with what is run at another recent repave in Texas Motor Speedway.”

Chilton comes from money. Why risk driving on dangerous ovals where the Carlin cars are slow. Once the Halo/windscreen is introduced in 2020, Chilton might reconsider
Carlin's performance at Indy underscored how bad their cars are on oval tracks. Perhaps so diabolical they are scary.

Max Chilton will not compete in this Saturday night’s race at Texas Motor Speedway, and he will not compete in the race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, July 20, the race at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, August 18 or the race at Gateway Motorsports Park (now World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway) on Saturday, August 24.

“I would like to thank Gallagher for being supportive of my decision to not compete in the remaining oval races this season – I am extremely fortunate to have such a supportive partner. Risk Management is a central consideration of both Gallagher and myself in how we operate.

"I think I came into this year with a lot of experience," said Ericsson. "My goal and expectation was to run up front from the start. I think we had the pace to do it, but it's been a bit of a deeper learning process than maybe I expected.

Mercedes is bringing a more powerful engine to Montreal and will likely bury Ferrari again
(GMM) Mercedes could have a tougher challenge on its hands this weekend in Canada.

Although the German team has proved utterly dominant in 2019, winning all six races so far, the concept of Ferrari's car is tipped to be strong in Montreal.

"The track characteristics present a different challenge, given that top speed, braking efficiency and traction are the main considerations," said Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto.

Indeed, it is the corners where Ferrari is struggling this year, and a Mercedes engineer told Auto Motor und Sport: "We only have three corners there to make up time".
