Hinchcliffe took 14 pints of blood en route to Methodist
Hinchcliffe almost died from loss of blood
Injured IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe said in a video released Tuesday that his recovery from the May 18 accident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is "ahead of schedule," but he's cautious about a return to driving.

Hinchcliffe crashed during Indianapolis 500 practice. A piece of his car's right front suspension pierced an artery in his left upper thigh, causing life-threatening blood loss.

"The blood (recovery) started in the ambulance," Hinchcliffe told SportsNet, a Canadian cable sports network. "From what I hear, they skipped the (track's) infield medical center and (drove me) straight to (IU Health) Methodist (Hospital) because they knew it was bigger than that. I think I had 14 pints of blood en route to the hospital and the human body only holds 12, something like that, and then a bunch more in surgery until they were able to get in and get the artery fixed. Yeah, it was touch-and-go.

NASCAR Drivers Council Focused Early On Future Sprint Cup Rules, Safety For Participants
The goals of NASCAR's new drivers council are "coming into focus," as it seems most drivers "agree on at least a couple" of priorities, including future Sprint Cup rules and driver safety, according to Jim Utter of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER.

Driver Jimmie Johnson said the council is "really focused on rules and being a helpful hand in decisions made there and safety. It’s hard to say which one is a priority." He added, "We just want to make sure our voice is heard and the people who make the decisions know what is really going on in the car.” Several participants in early council meetings have said that NASCAR facilitated a meeting at Dover Int'l Speedway and "offered suggestions on how the drivers could create their group."

France says new manufacturers still interested in NASCAR
Brian France
NASCAR Chairman Brian France [interviewed on SiriusXM Satellite Radio Monday] said NASCAR still fields calls from potential new manufacturers. "We're generally open to figuring out how to make a new manufacturer work in NASCAR," he said. "We have those discussions. Obviously, it's complicated how a manufacturer might enter the sport. It goes back to the original points. They want to make sure they have a fair and balanced playing field. If they line up talent, that they can have a shot to compete and do well.

Montoya chases Triple Crown of his own
Juan Montoya
American Pharaoh became the 12th horse to claim horse racing's Triple Crown on June 6. Later this summer Juan Pablo Montoya will try to become the second driver to complete Indy car racing's Triple Crown.

Prior to American Pharaoh’s accomplishment, Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner in 1978 - the same year that Al Unser won the Indianapolis 500 and the 500-mile races at Pocono Raceway and Ontario (Calif.) to become the only driver in the same calendar year to win the three-set race that was part of Indy car racing from 1971-80. After Ontario closed in 1980, it was replaced by Michigan International Speedway and the Triple Crown continued until 1989.

Scott Dixon
Is this the emergence of another Scott Dixon second-half surge?

Dixon's decisive victory in the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway - the ninth of 16 Verizon IndyCar Series races - was his second of the season and 37th of his Indy car career.

Additionally, and potentially more importantly, it drew him 20 points closer to championship front-runner Juan Pablo Montoya, who now takes a 35-point advantage over Team Penske teammate Will Power into the Honda Indy Toronto on June 14. Dixon is 43 points back.

Toronto IndyCar race needs help again
My involvement with the biggest auto racing show in the GTA/Metro Niagara goes back long before the first actual “Molson” Indy Toronto in 1986.

While working at 680 CFTR Toronto, now 680 News, in the 1980s, an effort to rewrite auto racing in our vicinity was announced, as promoters wanted to bring The IndyCars, or ChampCars, the stars of the famed Indianapolis 500, to the streets of the provincial capital.

This was extremely exciting news for me, having been an avid IndyCar fan since childhood, so I knew I had to get involved with this high-velocity adventure.

McLaren offers 'more resources' to help Honda
The silly F1 engine regs are so difficult it has brought auto giants Renault and Honda to their knees.  And what has that accomplished other than wasting hundreds of millions of dollars?
(GMM)  McLaren has offered to help works engine partner Honda to end the current crisis before it becomes "embarrassing".

Despite boring race, small crowd, IndyCar expected to remain at TMS
Every year the crowd in Texas gets smaller and smaller. About 15,000 showed up this year
It's becoming more of a question whether Texas Motor Speedway and IndyCar is the right match anymore. Another snoozer of a race Saturday, despite being the "fastest" in the track's history, brought up more concerns.

Only five drivers finished on the lead lap. The winning driver - Scott Dixon - could have put it in cruise control the final 12 laps with a winning margin of more than seven seconds.

It was heavy on single-car racing and light on drama. No significant wrecks or major movers, just yawns.

Are Pocono Raceway's shorter races a sign of NASCAR's future?
Pocono
For almost 40 years, the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit's two races at Pocono Raceway were 500-mile events. And those two races were often described by fans, drivers and the media with two simple words - "too long."

Each time the circuit visited the 2.5-mile triangle track, complaints would pop up. Pocono, located between Philadelphia and Scranton, Pa., has been host of the longest races on the circuit in terms of time, averaging more than 3½ hours and sometimes passing the four-hour mark.

Newman not happy with Allmendinger after contact
Ryan Newman
Ryan Newman
Ryan Newman is not happy with AJ Allmendinger after the two made contact in Sunday's Axalta "We Paint Winners" 400 at Pocono Raceway. Newman's streak of consecutive top-10 finishes at Pocono Raceway came to an end Sunday when he was involved in an incident with Allmendinger on lap 141.

Allmendinger, who was battling Newman for seventh, appeared to slide up the track just a little as the duo raced through Turn 1 and made contact with the left-rear of Newman's car in the outside lane. That caused the No. 31 Chevrolet to hit the wall and Newman's day ended with a severely damaged car. "It's pretty obvious what happened," Newman said. "The #47 (Allmendinger) just ran out of talent. He has got one coming now." Motor Racing Network

TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU EXPECT FOR THE RACE TODAY:
"Pocono has kind of turned into a track where I like coming to and seem to be always pretty quick whenever we come here.  I got my first pole last year and this weekend I feel like we are pretty good.  We were second quick in practice yesterday, second quick on the 20-lap average to (Kevin) Harvick.  I'm hoping for good things today.  I know it always changes in the race.  There have been a lot of times where we have been really fast in practice and then kind of aren't quite as good in the race.  Hopefully today is a little different and we can have a good run.  Just try and carry on our momentum from last week and get a good finish today."

Brian France Joins NASCAR RACEDAY from Pocono; Talks Driver Council

NASCAR Chairman & CEO joined the NASCAR RACEDAY panel on FOX Sports 1 Sunday morning from Pocono Raceway to discuss a variety of topics, including the new "driver council" that met last week at Dover.  Below are excerpts from France's interview, as well as reaction from FOX NASCAR analysts Darrell Waltrip and Michael Waltrip:

FRANCE ON WHAT DRIVERS' CONCERNS WERE IN THE MEETING AT DOVER:

"The first thing is we've been doing a lot of that in the last four or five years anyway.  We've got an OEM council, we meet with the car manufacturers, we have track meetings that we didn't have before, we have owner meetings that we didn't have before.  So, needless to say, the most important stakeholder in our sport, besides our fans, are our drivers.  That's a good thing for us to hear in a more formal setting some of the things that are on their mind.  It was a good meeting.  It was a good discussion."

Honda teams voice serious concern over future of IndyCar
Honda sponsors may leave IndyCar - why sponsor a car that has no chance to win?
There was reason for Honda IndyCar teams to feel upbeat after last weekend's doubleheader at Detroit when Honda driver Carlos Munoz won the first race of his career in Race 1 followed by Honda sweeping positions 2-9 in Race 2.

But that has not been cause for celebration for the two Honda team owners that have actually found a way to win a race with the Honda in the first half of the 2015 IndyCar season. That's because James Hinchcliffe's victory in the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana and Munoz's win at Detroit were in rain-shortened races. Honda teams know that in a straight-up fight with the Chevrolet teams, they are outmatched.

It all comes down to the Aero Kit -- where competition between cars was going to become an integral part of IndyCar racing with the return of innovation and creativity.

Buemi penalized for unsafe release
Sebastien Buemi's post-race penalty drops him from 2nd to 9th place in the Moscow ePrix race results
Sebastien Buemi has lost second place in the Moscow ePrix after his e.dams-Renault team was penalised for an unsafe release.

The team had already held Buemi for 68 seconds, far longer than the mandated 58 minimum requirement, when they released Buemi into the path of the approaching Venturi entry of Nick Heidfeld.

As a result Buemi had 29 seconds added on to his race time – the equivalent of a drive-through penalty – which dropped him to ninth place.

This means that all the drivers from fourth to ninth have been promoted one place – including Heidfeld into a first podium spot.

Lotus F1 Team has best qualifying of 2015
The Lotuses have found some speed in Montreal
Lotus F1 Team enjoyed their season's best qualifying performance with Romain Grosjean fifth and Pastor Maldonado sixth for tomorrow's Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Both drivers carried on with strong weekends so far to set times under a second away from pole position.

Romain Grosjean, E23-04. Q: P5, 1:15.194. FP3: P3, 1:16.772

"It's great for the team, we've been competitive since our first lap here this weekend; staying in the top seven all the time. The car's been feeling great today; P1 in Q1, P3 in Q2 and finally P5 to start tomorrow. I think everything has been working very well and it's good that both cars are up there. Tomorrow it's a tough race, for the brakes definitely, but generally too so we need to care of that but it's the same for everyone. A podium finish would be fantastic - we can hope - but a top five will be really great. We'll do our best as always and we'll see how we get on."

IndyCar can take F1's lead on this issue
18 inch wheels have no place on race cars. F1's 13 inch wheels will stay and IndyCar should drop their wheels down to 13 inches as well.
Without a doubt IndyCar needs reduce dependency on aero grip and increase dependency on mechanical grip. As such IndyCar would be wise to switch to 13" diameter wheels, something AR1.com has recommended on numerous occasions.

There was another recent push within F1 to switch to the 18-inch wheel but the top engineers in the sport have recommended against it.

"The subject of bigger wheels has been raised many times over the last five or eight years," said Mercedes executive technical director Paddy Lowe.

Rahal: Texas will be a hard race
Graham Rahal
Graham Rahal
Q and A with Graham Rahal at Texas

GRAHAM RAHAL
:  I didn't feel much of a difference with those (Revised Butt Bumpers).  Everything seems to be fine from that side of things.

This is going to be a tricky, tricky race.  You know, I know there's a new tire here, there's a whole bunch of aero changes.  But the times seemed to be falling off pretty quickly.  I think even in qualifying, you might have to take it pretty easy on your out lap to not hurt the tire too much for the two laps.

You know, the panels seem to be fine.  All those sorts of things are all right.  There's so many different configurations we can all play with I know the Honda boys have been trying out.  Sato, at the end for instance, ran without any of the winglets on the rear of the car and all that stuff.  Obviously his first lap was quick and his second lap was about three miles an hour slower.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PART OF THE PENN STATE FAMILY HERE IN PENNSYLVANIA?
“It’s amazing.  We had a chance to go over to Penn State and visit with the students and faculty and the group of engineers that are doing so much to be the future of companies like Axalta or the future of racing.  I think Axalta has done some amazing work this year with how they interacted with their customers as well as reaching out to – we did it last year with Texas A&M and then this year with Penn State.  It’s been very productive and successful for them.  Them also being the title sponsor for this weekend they are doing some great work and I’m proud to be associated with them.  Pennsylvania and here at Pocono we have always had great fan support, not just myself, but NASCAR in general.  I think after having Penn State and those blue and white colors on our No. 24 car we are certainly going to have even more support.  The pressure is on, but at the same time we are just excited about that relationship.”

Driving modern F1 cars like piloting an airplane
Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso believes the complexity of driving a modern Formula One car is similar to being an airplane pilot.

Much has been made of the challenges of a modern F1 car from inside the cockpit, with drivers now expected to do a lot more than just race. Alonso thinks the role of the driver has shifted away from racing hard to making sure the whole package is working at the optimum level.

"You have to control everything in the best way possible or most efficient way, that's your challenge," Alonso said. "Like airplane pilots, probably, they just have to control that everything is working fine. A small little plane, they have a lot more to do probably, because there's not so much automatic to do. It's now difficult to push the limit because if you push at the limit something will go into a less efficient mode and that will affect the total lap time. You just need to make sure everything is at 100% - not yourself."

Sage Karam has been hoping to get people to pay attention to his racing, but a five-race penalty levied by officials of the Verizon IndyCar Series following Sunday's race in Detroit might not have been what he was looking for.

A sentence in an IndyCar release listing infractions from the latest event in the series said simply, "IndyCar officials placed driver Sage Karam of Chip Ganassi Racing on probation for five races for violating Rule 9.3.3 (Avoidable Contact) during Race 2."

Hamilton: I'm the man
Hamilton tells the media he is the only one that can save F1
LEWIS HAMILTON is turning himself into a one-man promotional crusade for a sport dogged by waning
popularity.

And the world champion insists he knows the image he is building: "It's definitely rock and roll. I don't want to be a jet-set star. I want it to be the rock and roll lifestyle."

As if to prove the point, - Hamilton posted a wide-eyed mock rant on social media and a picture of a goat in sunglasses.

He also leapt 20 feet into the Med in a wet suit and a baseball cap then put the snaps on
Instagram.

LeMans Scrutineering - How it works!
Fans enjoy a prerace fan forum
The Le Mans week is just about to get under way! This year will be one to remember, perhaps more so than any other because of the quality of the field and the entertainment on hand for the crowd’s enjoyment. On Sunday 7th July at 14h30 the Dome S103 making its Sarthe debut will be the first car to run the gauntlet of the men in white at scrutineering on Place de la Republique in the town center of Le Mans launching the 2015 festivities.

Since 2012, scrutineering and administrative checks, commonly called Le Pesage (The weigh in) as in the early days of motor sport, take place on Place de la Republique in the town center. Fifty-six cars and 168 drivers will follow one another and file past the eagle eyes of the scrutineers who will decide whether or not the machines comply with the regulations, and if the men are fit to drive them.

IndyCar takes untested aero changes into tonight’s Texas race
The sealed Butt Bumpers on Montoya's Chevy so air cannot flow through them when traveling backwards, causing lift
With another new and untested aerodynamic configuration on its cars, the Verizon IndyCar Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway, arguably its most dangerous track, for Saturday's Firestone 600.

Because it's the first time this aero configuration has ever been used, we won't know until after the 248-lap race on Saturday night if the changes produced the desired effect.

The reaction of a crashed car running the Texas aero package was put to the test very quickly on Friday, as Ryan Hunter-Reay crashed his Andretti Autosport Honda about halfway through the first practice session. Hunter-Reay was uninjured, but his No. 28 car sustained extensive left side and rear damage.
