Legge to race at TMS for the first time
Kathryn Legge
Tim Wohlford/AR1.com
Katherine Legge is racing at Texas Motor Speedway for the first time this weekend.

But her journey to the IZOD IndyCar Series began at Texas Motor Speedway in November 2004 when she participated in a test for female drivers organized by Infiniti Pro Series (now Firestone Indy Lights) team owner Kathryn Nunn.

In Europe at the time following a season in British Formula Three and not invited to the three-day session, the 2002 British Racing Drivers' Club "Rising Star" award winner nonetheless arrived at the track with firesuit and helmet in hand. More ...

Travis Pastrana takes a lap with Mario
Travis Pastrana (R) took an IndyCar ride with Mario Andretti in the 2-seater.  After going around at IndyCar speeds the NASCAR stock car he has been driving must feel like slow motion.
Global RallyCross competitor and action sports star Travis Pastrana rode in the Indy Racing Experience Two-Seater today with Mario Andretti. The ride, along with the ride of Andy Bell, was filmed for use on their MTV show "Nitro Circus."

TRAVIS PASTRANA: "The whole time I was like, 'Oh no, oh no!' It was awesome, though, I had fun. I actually didn't think it was going to be that exciting, but it was really cool." (About how it compares to NASCAR or Monster Trucks]: "That feels really similar, except for Mario Andretti was driving that time. So that was cool, he's definitely a racing icon and a legend. It has a lot of grip, that's for sure." [On if he wanted to drive]: "I would have loved to have been in the front seat. I tell you what, being in the back seat, he came around the corner and didn't lift, we're wide open and I was like, 'I hope it sticks and nothing that I can do or say right now would change the outcome of this at all.' So that part I don't like, but it was good."

Texas Friday Updates - 2
Alex Tagliani may be on pole but these girls were better eye candy
Tim Wohlford/AR1.com
Alex Tagliani, freshly rescued from Lotus hell, scored his first pole of the season, his second consecutive pole at Texas Motor Speedway.

Tagliani lead a 4-car Honda sweep of qualifications, winning 6 of the top 10 spots. There is no doubt that the Honda cars have a horsepower edge, not only at full boost on the street circuit of Detroit, but also the super ovals of Indy and Texas. (See related feature article)

**************

The owners weren't the only ones meeting at Detroit. As it turns out, the drivers also met, and in the meeting, voted unanimously for less downforce in the cars. At Texas, they got it -- and the drivers are talking about how much harder the cars are to drive.

And mind you, they like it this way. Second place qualifier Graham Rahal compared driving the high-banked Texas oval to driving, of all places, the flat oval of Milwaukee. The drivers are saying that speeds will drop off drastically over the course of a pit cycle, that the cars move around a lot more, and that the drivers are much more involved than in the past. Graham said that he'd be tired on Sunday morning after the race.

Oh, and they are saying, the LOVE it this way. And they believe that we won't see the pack racing we've seen in the past few high-banked "NASCAR" ovals. And that's the part they really love. "You somewhat control your own destiny" in the words of Graham Rahal.

**************

The drivers also are saying that the slingshot passing seen at Indy won't be a factor at Texas. For one thing, the front stretch here is much shorter, and has this funny kink in the middle. However, the aero package being run here, combine with the fall-off anticipated in the tires, will negate this for much of the race.

Graham Rahal ended up his press conference by saying, "At Indy we weren't hanging on like we are here. Quite frankly, maybe Indy next year they need to take this sort of formula and take it there, where you're limited to how much downforce you can run.... Indy was a great show, for sure, but if all things go the way I think they will, I think tomorrow could go even better."

ISC Taking Steps To Revive, Expand Plans For Entertainment Complex In Daytona  International Speedway Corp. is taking early steps to revive and expand its former Daytona Live! project, seeking city approval to nearly double the space for a planned entertainment complex across from Daytona International Speedway.

What will be built -- and when -- is still up in the air. But paperwork the ISC filed with the city lists a 660-room hotel, a 2,500-seat theatre and 1,350 multi-family residential units as possible uses for the land. The additional acreage would give the project 180 acres of land to potentially develop, although Speedway officials caution that any project will move in phases and likely involve only a fraction of the acreage requested. The race was stopped for track repair and resumed after a delay of approximately two hours.
