Nationwide deep-sixes Hendrick Motorsports Sponsorship
When you don't win sponsors walk
When you don't win, and TV ratings drop, sponsors flee

Nationwide Insurance will end its sponsorship of Hendrick Motorsports after this year, using an early out clause in its contract as the company goes through several significant changes to its business structure and executive team. This marks a big blow for HMS, as Nationwide had 20 primaries per year on Alex Bowman’s No. 88, which likely took the deal into the eight figures annually. The Ohio-based company will retain a presence in NASCAR -- albeit a much smaller one -- by continuing to run PSAs featuring Dale Earnhardt Jr. and hosting partners at select races next year.

Audi recalls 1,644 E-Tron electric SUVs for wiring leak
Audi E-Tron
Audi E-Tron
Audi announced on Monday that it will recall 1,644 Audi E-Tron EV crossovers. Approximately 540 of the recalled vehicles are already in customer hands, while the remainder are already at dealers or in transit to dealerships. It's worth noting that this is not a stop-sale; Audi will continue E-Tron sales during the recall.

The problem stems from the vehicle's wiring -- specifically, a grommet on the wiring assembly between the charging plug port and the battery. The grommet may allow moisture buildup, and if too much moisture accumulates, the vehicle may throw a warning light or, in a worst-case scenario, start a fire. Audi was quick to note that no "thermal events" have been discovered since the car's introduction, but moisture sensors in the wiring harness have detected buildup in five cases globally since the model's debut.

Carlin INDYCAR driver Patricio O'Ward joins Red Bull Junior Team (3rd Update)
IndyCar had better act fast on the Mexico City race and securing O'Ward in a top ride, or risk kissing him Goodbye to F1
IndyCar had better act fast on the Mexico City race and securing O'Ward in a top ride, or risk kissing him Goodbye to F1

UPDATE Patricio O’Ward is at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on Saturday and is scheduled to meet with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko to discuss next steps toward a move to F1.

His Red Bull backing does not include buying any rides in IndyCar, it is only to get him a test in F1 and if he shows promise then probably more.

O'Ward is reported to have no backing from Mexico and Carlos Slim, but if he makes it to F1, look for that to change. However, if the Mexico GP goes away as reported, O'Ward's F1 dreams will likely take a big hit.

Mario Andretti likes to make sure the passenger gets his money's worth
Mario Andretti likes to make sure the passenger gets his money's worth

“I like to make sure the rider (in the 2-seat IndyCar) feels like I’ve left nothing on the table,” Mario Andretti told NBCSports.com on Friday in Texas.

But on Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, the 79-year-old Andretti was giving a business associate a ride around the high-banked oval when the car broke loose coming out of Turn 2 and spun out.

Andretti was able to maintain control of the car and keep it from hitting the outside wall. The car drifted across the track and made light contact with the infield retaining wall.

Hamilton says F1 should level playing field between teams
Hamilton wants return to V12s, manual gearboxes, and no power steering
Hamilton wants return to V12s, manual gearboxes, and no power steering
Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton believes returning to an old-school style of racing would solve Formula One’s ongoing problem with parity.

The four-time world champ and current leader in the standings said Thursday the vast separation between the top teams and the lower teams is hurting the sport. Mercedes has won all six races this season and will look to make it seven in a row at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.

“People do continue to comment that it’s boring,” Hamilton said of the inequality between teams. “Ferrari wins for a period of time, McLaren wins for a period of time, Mercedes, Red Bull. How you stop that?

Alex Tagliani wishes his daddy bought him an F1 team so he too could have a ride in F1
(GMM) Lance Stroll would not be in Formula 1 if not for his billionaire father's money.

That is the view of Alex Tagliani, a former Indycar driver who like Stroll is from Canada.

"I'm not taking away his talent, but I'm going to give you my opinion," Tagliani told Canadian broadcaster TVA Sports on the weekend of the Canadian GP.

"I don't think so," he answered when asked if Stroll would be in F1 if he wasn't bankrolled by Racing Point team owner Lawrence Stroll, his billionaire father.

Abiteboul slams $175m budget cap figure
The crying towels are out in the F1 paddock
The crying towels are out in the F1 paddock

(GMM) The F1 teams are divided over Liberty Media's handling of the 2021 rules reform.

Firstly, it emerges that the F1 owner has settled on a US $175 million annual budget cap per team for the period between 2021 and 2025.

Excluded are driver, engine, travel and marketing costs.

"This is not a new start," an angry Cyril Abiteboul, the team boss at Renault, told Auto Motor und Sport. "The plan was that all teams should be profitable."

Also telling is that the budget cap amount is supported by Toto Wolff, boss of F1's biggest spender, Mercedes.
