Jay Penske is public tiff with Nikki Finke
Oops, someone spilled the party dip at my launch party. Last night my lawyers received a nasty legal letter from former IndyCar team owner Jay Penske (aka Little Lord Fauntleroy) trying to shut down my new website. He also doesn’t want me exercising my right to free speech. For those not in the know,  Penske owns Deadline Hollywood which I founded and ran until our Fall 2013 dust-up. As you know, I dutifully sat out months because of the non-compete. That ended on April 1st when Penske did not pay the 6-figure sum I was owed. So I was able to start work again on June 2nd.

Meanwhile, Penske was negotiating with me to come back to Deadline! He was throwing money at me – nearly $500,000 a year to not even write a word – plus other good stuff. But every time I accepted his settlement, he would change terms adverse to me, and then we’d have to negotiate all over again. So on the night of June 11th, we reached an impasse. And I started up NikkiFinke.com the next day. But now he’s spitting nails.

Friday notebook from LeMans
Macneil, Bleekemolen Set To Race In Different Car After Qualifying Crash
A crash by Bret Curtis in the No. 79 ProSpeed Competition Porsche during Thursday’s first qualifying session put the plans of 2013 American Le Mans Series GTC champions Cooper MacNeil and Jeroen Bleekemolen in serious jeopardy for the 82nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, set to begin Saturday at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. ET).

Fortunately, the team was able to secure another car overnight. In a further link to North America, it is the same car that current TUDOR United SportsCar Championship competitors Paul Miller Racing fielded in the American Le Mans Series last season.

The car is being raced this year in the European Le Mans Series by driver Sebastien Crubile, who also will replace Curtis in the driver lineup. Curtis has not been cleared to drive by race organizers, the Automobile Club l’Ouest (ACO).

Win at Texas satisfying Carpenter as owner, driver
Ed Carpenter - The anti-gun lobby must hate those guns - see below
Victory in the Firestone 600 on June 7 at Texas Motor Speedway was personally satisfying for Ed Carpenter as the driver, and maybe more gratifying for the Ed Carpenter Racing team owner.

It was the second victory of the season for the team. Carpenter competes in the oval track races in the No. 20 Fuzzy's Vodka/Ed Carpenter Racing car, while Mike Conway is in his first year with the team for the street/road course events. He won at Long Beach in mid-April.

The last time two different drivers won in the same car in one season was 2005 when Bruno Junqueira won at Monterrey, Mexico, in the No. 2 Newman-Haas Racing car. He was injured in the Indianapolis 500 and Oriol Servia drove for the remainder of the season, winning at Montreal.

Weather puts a damper on testing at Milwaukee Mile for IndyCar race
Wednesday, June 11th was "Washout Wednesday" at the Milwaukee Mile! So what did the race teams do?

About a dozen IndyCar race teams were scheduled to test at the Milwaukee Mile on Wednesday for the August race - but Mother Nature had other plans.

"Lots of YouTube videos right now. Watching some French hill climbing of all things," IndyCar driver Justin Wilson said.

Drivers like Justin Wilson were finding ways to wipe away the time while technical folks like Blair Perchbacher still had to get something done. After all, his race team had about 40 people on hand Wednesday, plus their cars and equipment. All those people and stuff must be in Iowa Friday for more testing.

Mallya's stake in Kingfisher Airlines drops below 10%
FLYING LOW
• 7.31% Value of Kingfisher Airlines' shares invoked and transferred by IDBI Trusteeship to lenders depository account
• 8.55% Fall in Vijay Mallya's stake, which was at 15.86% by March-end
• 30.14% Mallya's share in the beginning of 2014
On Wednesday, IDBI Trusteeship invoked and transferred pledged equity shares worth 7.31 per cent in Kingfisher Airlines to the depository account of lenders. As a result, UB Group chief Mallya’s holding in the now defunct airline has fallen to 8.55 per cent from 15.86 per cent in March.

At the beginning of this year, his stake in the airline stood at 30.14 per cent.

Following IDBI Trusteeship’s move on Wednesday, lenders to the airline have invoked all its pledged shares. About a week ago, Kolkata-based United Bank of India (UBI) had issued a willful defaulter’s notice on Mallya, after the consortium of lenders to the airline failed to make headway in recovering dues.

"I don't use drugs, for sure," Mayfield said. "I don't drink. I might have a couple of beers a year, maybe. … I don't steal. I haven't broke into any buildings and stole race parts and stuff."

Walker talks about possible return to old IndyCar venues
On Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway, IndyCar Series operations and competition chief Derrick Walker spent some time with select media members openly discussing several racing and logistical issues concerning the tour.

On returning Surfers Paradise:

"Not that it's a bad idea but what you're doing is focusing on race tracks as neat places to go to. The biggest hurdle is that we can think of all these great places that we want to go race but for us and other racing series, some of these places have to think it's a good business venture and be willing to pay the fee to get us to come.

"With Australia, it's not a bottomless pit of money pit of money for a bunch of Indy cars to go race. With the business model of Surfers Paradise, there was a government sponsor that wanted tourism and an American product — an international product — coming to their shores highlighted by what they were trying to advertise.

New Superspeedway owner won't rule out NASCAR, IndyCar bids
IndyCar attendance 2006 - night race massive Firestone ticket giveaway
IndyCar attendance 2007 - day race no massive Firestone ticket giveaway. The concrete racing surface was too bumpy for the fast IndyCars.  Very dangerous.
Robb Sexton, new owner of Nashville Superspeedway, won't rule out attempting to bring back NASCAR and IndyCar racing at some point in the future.

"Never say never," Sexton said Tuesday during an interview about his vision for the sprawling Gladeville track on which racing was suspended three years ago.

During its 11 years of operation, the track ran NASCAR Nationwide and truck races, and was on the IndyCar schedule for eight seasons. The lower-tier NASCAR races failed to draw, the IndyCar Series departed, and the big dreams for the track died.

Sexton, undeterred by past disappointments, is determined to revive the dream.

"It's a great facility and we're going to put it to use," he said.

In addition to utilizing the 1.3-mile main racetrack, Sexton also expressed interest in developing the drag strip, dirt track and short track that were included in the original blueprints.

"We plan to develop the entire facility," Sexton said. "We have a comprehensive business plan that involves using the track 52 weeks a year, with a primary emphasis on the motorsports community. Our focus is on a motorsports identity."

The F1 thrill is gone, TV viewership plummeting (Update) UPDATE [Editor's Note: Make no mistake about it, the F1 scream is gone, and with it the thrill. Can't say we didn't tell you so. Couple that with the lack of interest from youth around the world and make no mistake about it, racing is in trouble and F1 is no exception. IndyCar, NASCAR, F1, Sportscars, everything is at risk until the racing leadership addresses the real problem.]

F1's television ratings in key markets are strikingly down in 2014.

Writing in the Spanish sports daily Marca, correspondent Miguel Sanz said the most worrying figures are coming out of Latin America, where the ratings decline has been a staggering 50 per cent.

"In Italy," he added, "depending on the successes of Ferrari, the drop is 20 per cent based on data from the first five races of 2014."

A closer look at Italy is even more worrying.  Considering only the Canadian grand prix, the combined losses by broadcasters Rai and Sky in just a single year was almost 3.5 million viewers.

"Spain, always with an eye on Fernando Alonso, is at a 15 per cent decline", said Sanz.

Junie Donlavey dies (Update) UPDATE Statement from Glen Wood on Passing of Junie Donlavey
"The only thing you really need to know about Junie Donlavey is that he was probably the most well-liked person ever in the sport of NASCAR.  He was a good friend of the Wood Brothers … one of our very best friends in the sport.  I can tell you I would call him on the phone, and even before I could get a word or two out, he knew who it was that was calling.

"The thing I will always remember about Junie is that he was never mad or upset.  He took everything in stride.  He just enjoyed being around the sport and being around people.  You’d see him in the garage, and he’d always be talking with someone, and I used to love seeing him doubled-up laughing over some story.

Video appears to show Massa to blame for accident with Perez in Montreal (Update) UPDATE We found an overhead video that show they both moved - Massa right and Perez left.  Perez did not move that much, but the combination of the two moving caused the accident.

06/09/14 As can be seen from this video starting at the 27 second mark, it is clear that Felipe Massa misjudged and ran right into the left rear of Sergio Perez on the last lap of the Canadian GP.  You can see Perez is holding his line on the outside and Massa just drove straight into him.

NASCAR reporter breaks his ankle while interviewing Dale Earnhardt Jr.
MRN reporter Dustin Long was interviewing Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Pocono Friday when a terrible accident temporarily derailed his weekend. Long fell off one of the scales that NASCAR uses to weigh cars and broke his ankle. Long posted a gruesome photo of the injury on his Twitter account.

Earnhardt took the blame for the accident, saying he led Long through the scales as a shortcut.

Ever hear the saying "break a leg" for good luck?  Well Earnhardt went on to win Sunday.

Ed Carpenter
Harry E. Walker/LAT for Chevy Racing
There wasn’t a big celebration Saturday night for Ed Carpenter Racing after Ed Carpenter captured the Firestone 600K at Texas Motor Speedway.

Maybe there was just a little beer consumed on the plane back to Indianapolis for the crew as they landed on the early hours of Sunday morning for the 15-man crew. There wasn’t time to enjoy their sponsor’s product, Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka.

Truck drivers Matt Giese and Jeff Hughes had already hit the road with the winning No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet and headed to Iowa for the Tuesday test day at the Iowa Speedway small oval.
