Belgian GP secures three-year F1 contract extension at Spa

The Belgian GP at Spa has signed a new three-year extension with Formula 1's owners Liberty Media.
Belgian business newspaper L'Echo reports that the deal was signed this week, between Spa-Francorchamps' local Wallonian government and Liberty, extending the current deal which runs out after the 2018 event.
The renewal was back by a study that showed the 2017 Grand Prix enjoyed a 7.5% increase in attendance compared to 2016, as 95,965 tickets were sold, including 90,185 to foreign spectators. The Walloon spectators represent 2,133 tickets for 3,646 for the Flemish and Brussels visitors, ie a total estimated flow of 265,000 spectators in three days.
Sauber Motorsport AG expands collaboration with 3D Systems

As a former Formula 1 driver, Indycar champion and now team owner Michael Andretti knows a thing or two about race drivers, for him the best driver he has ever worked with is McLaren driver Fernando Alonso who he hopes will win this weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours.
The Spaniard drove a McLaren financed Honda-powered Dallara run by Andretti Autosport at last year’s Indy 500 where he worked closely with team chief Andretti, who admitted he will be streaming the Le Mans 24 Hour race to monitor Alonso’s progress in his debut at the legendary race with Toyota Gazoo Racing.
Mugello race winner Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) was the man to beat on the opening day at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, ending FP2 top of the timesheets after setting a 1:38.930 – the only rider to step under the 1:39 bracket.
The Spaniard improved his time by over 0.8 seconds from FP1 after finishing third in the morning, laying down the gauntlet ahead of qualifying on Saturday. Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) was able to bounce back after a crash in FP1, the Italian was the only rider to get within 0.4 seconds of the number 99 on Friday to finish second overall.
FIA considering automated checkered flag to reduce mishaps

The checkered flag is a near-universal symbol. It denotes the finish of a race and victory for one driver. But, the physical checkered flag's days could be numbered, based on comments from the FIA.
Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting told Motorsport.com in a Wednesday report that the FIA is pondering an automated and digital checkered flag to reduce mishaps. For those unfamiliar, the incidents are few and far between, but an mistake at the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix has prompted discussions about change. At the grand prix, the starter, who officially starts and finishes the race, miscommunicated with race control and ordered the flag waved on the 69th of 70 laps by a celebrity flag waver.
Rick Kelly continued the resurgence of Nissan with a dominant practice day in Darwin, setting up what could be another strong weekend for the former Supercars Champion.
Kelly topped the first practice session to start the CrownBet Darwin Triple Crown at Hidden Valley in the Top End ahead of the heavyweights of Supercars, Shell V-Power Racing and the Red Bull Holden Racing Team.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will launch a new weekly half-hour show devoted to motor sports on NBCSN as part of NBC Sports’ fourth season of Nascar coverage.
“Dale Jr Download” will debut Thursday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. following the series “NASCAR America.” The new program is essentially a broadcast of Earnhardt doing a weekly podcast. Mike Davis serves as co-host. The show is produced on-site at DirtyMo Studios in Charlotte, N.C., Earnhardt and Davis offer first-person insight into the life of a celebrated race car driver.

Ernie Francis Jr., the top winner in the history of the Trans-Am Series, is getting another taste of NASCAR this weekend in New Jersey.
Francis, a four-time Trams-Am Series champion and member of NASCAR's 2018 Drive for Diversity class, will join Rev Racing for the first road course race of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Saturday, June 16. It will make for Francis' second NASCAR start, as he finished 39th in the Xfinity Series race at Road America in 2017.
NBC Sports Rolling Out New Pitbox For Rest Of NASCAR Season
NBC Sports today showed off a new custom pitbox that will be at every race for its second half of the NASCAR season. The 14-foot-by-12.5-foot pitbox, which is a couple feet longer and higher than a typical pitbox, will be used for everything from pre/post race coverage to possibly having analysts call races from there. The pitbox cost roughly the same to buy as NBC’s prior pre-post race set did and features a touch screen at the base plus several screens, a desk and nine camera positions, along with prominent “NASCAR on NBC” branding.
IMS Makes Slight Ticket Price Increases For '19 Indianapolis 500
Indianapolis Motor Speedway has raised ticket prices on 65% of inventory for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 next May, the track confirmed to THE DAILY. However, IMS said that the average increase was by just 2%, that most increases are by less than $5 and that many decreases that IMS instituted in ’17 following the 100th running in ’16 are still in place during the ongoing renewal period.
Roush Fenway Racing Announces Additional 2018 Kenseth Schedule
Matt Kenseth will pilot Roush Fenway Racing’s flagship No. 6 Ford for 10 more races in 2018. Starting on July 14 at Kentucky Speedway, Kenseth’s summer stretch of four-straight weekends will conclude at Watkins Glen International on August 5.
Kenseth made his return to Roush Fenway earlier this year at Kansas Speedway and raced five consecutive weeks at the helm of the No. 6 Ford. After Kentucky, he will be behind the wheel of the car at Loudon (July 22), Pocono (July 29) and Watkins Glen (Aug. 5) – tracks where the Cambridge, Wisconsin, native has tallied a combined five wins.

With a government order to recall 774,000 vehicles in Europe, Daimler AG stands accused of having used illegal defeat device in its engines, while escaping the crushing cost of fines.
The move follows consultations with the German government in Berlin on June 11, which Daimler Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche called “constructive.” Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer for his part didn’t mince his words by ordering “an immediate formal recall because of prohibited shutoff devices.”

Final weekend TV Ratings - IndyCar reaches new low on NBCSN
NBCSN delivers IndyCar another new low
NBCSN delivered a record low TV rating for the Texas IndyCar race Saturday night under the lights.
Only 59,000 people tuned in between 18 and 49 years of age and the TV rating plunged 40.0% to 0.21. Ratings for IndyCar have pretty much been down across the board in 2018 (and 2017) but this rating has to be one of the worst.
And to think they signed a new TV deal with NBC and NBCSN. Amazing. Ratings table follows.
UPDATE The future of mobility is another step closer: Series production of the first purely electric Porsche is set to begin next year. In preparation, the vehicle previously operating under the working title "Mission E” has now been given its official name: Taycan. The name can be roughly translated as “lively young horse,” referencing the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest, which has featured a leaping steed since 1952.

Elon Musk has confirmed that he is completely serious about adding thrusters to the new Tesla Roadster and he added that the optional package will replace the mysterious back seats that the upcoming electric supercar is supposedly going to have.
