INDYCAR Eliminates Push-to-Pass Monitoring
In an effort to promote more overtaking at Verizon IndyCar Series road- and street-course races, INDYCAR announced it will no longer display entrants' push-to-pass counts and usage via indicators in its timing and scoring software.

Until now, teams were able to monitor all Verizon IndyCar Series competitors' push-to-pass (P2P) count and when they are being used via the INDYCAR timing and scoring system available in each pit box.

"Unfortunately, the information given to the teams on the push-to-pass function has tended to be used as a defensing measure," said Derrick Walker, INDYCAR President of Competition and Operations. "The driver being overtaken activates his or her own P2P to defend, which defeats the intention of P2P, obviously. We will limit the availability of that information, which will make things interesting, particularly late in the race."

Piquet Jr takes pole in Toronto
Piquet Jr.
Nelson Piquet Jr took pole position this morning in qualifying for the Toronto round of the Indy Lights Series presented by Cooper Tires. The Brazilian was near the top of the timesheets for the majority of the session but it was his final lap that claimed the top spot ahead of this afternoon’s race. Ed Jones was also competitive on his first visit to the challenging street circuit, but struggling for grip qualified sixth.

After limited running yesterday, both Piquet and Jones faced a steep learning curve this morning in the 30 minute qualifying session. After rain yesterday the track proved slippery as the drivers began their first qualifying laps, with several drivers spinning. Piquet was quick to show his pace, going P1 in the first 10 minutes of the session.

IndyCar: Saturday morning update from Toronto
Low clouds on Saturday morning
Lucille Dust/AR1.com
Good morning from Toronto.  Practice 3 is underway and we are waiting for the sun to break out from behind The clouds that are still hanging over the area from yesterday.  It is supposed to be 70 degrees and dry today. This is not the weather we are used to for this race, which is usually hot and humid.  It is a welcome change.

Will Juan Montoya get his first Toronto pole today or will his experienced teammate Will Power take the point for the pole?  Don't rule out Scott Dixon who won both races here in 2013 and has finished on the podium in three of the last six races here.  Sebastien Bourdais is also a factor and he won here last year in the first race of the weekend.

Mario Andretti reunites with pace car from Indy 500
Mario reunited with 1969 Indy 500 pace car

Mario reunited with 1969 Indy 500 pace car

When auto racing legend Mario Andretti won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969, he rode in a muscled Camaro for a victory lap with wife Dee Ann Andretti and team owner Andy Granatelli.

Flash-forward 46 years to Wednesday. That same Camaro, looking just as good now as it did then, cruised up to Andretti Winery on Big Ranch Road for an audience with the legendary Andretti himself.

Wade Ogle, a Napa native who had grown up with a love of classic cars, had brought his restored Camaro for Andretti's inspection, and perhaps for a walk down memory lane.

Only a few days prior to that 1969 win, the Camaro had been one of the first responders after Andretti's historic crash during the qualifying event. Andretti walked away from the wreckage with only minor burns to his face, but the car he was planning to race in the Indy 500 was destroyed.

FBI, IRS investigating Kurt Busch's ex-girlfriend, Patricia Driscoll
Patricia Driscoll - she tried to ruin Kurt Busch, but that court case tipped the FBI and IRS to look into Driscoll's business
FBI and IRS officials are investigating Patricia Driscoll, former girlfriend of NASCAR driver Kurt Busch, over allegations she has mishandled money as executive director of the multimillion-dollar Armed Forces Foundation, three sources told Outside the Lines.

The investigation follows an Outside the Lines report on May 22 that detailed a host of questionable practices by Driscoll during her ongoing 12-year run as executive director of the foundation, which has ties to sports-related entities, including NASCAR. Driscoll also is facing a federal whistleblower complaint filed by a former foundation employee.

Among the practices raised in the Outside the Lines report:

• Documents show the Armed Forces Foundation had, in effect, been repeatedly used as a bank to lend money for or pay various personal expenses, including bills for a private company Driscoll owns.

• The nonprofit's federal tax filings and audit reports in some instances fail to match, resulting in unexplained discrepancies about the amount of cash on hand, the mismatches totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Nelson Piquet Jr. thinks that the Verizon IndyCar Series could and should race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport).

Not that he thinks the downtown Honda Indy Toronto race should move to the Bowmanville natural road course, but rather that Canada should have two top-level North American open-wheel events.

Piquet, who is currently leading the championships in the Formula E series with one race to go, is at the Honda Indy to drive the Carlin Motorsports Mazda in the Indy Lights Series on Sunday.

He also spent two seasons in the NASCAR Xfinity and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Roush questions NASCAR inspection process
NASCAR inspection line
NASCAR inspection line in 2008 using templates instead of lasers

Team owner Jack Roush questions the consistency of NASCAR's laser platform, raising issues with an inspection process noteworthy for the numerous warnings issued teams this season. Cars must go through NASCAR's laser platform for inspection at the start of the weekend, before qualifying and before the race. The laser platform logs measurements of various parts, including front and rear wheel camber, wheel base and rear axle location. The laser platform can record measurements within 1/1,000th of an inch in some cases.

Controversy has surrounded NASCAR's inspection process and the platform this season. Roush raised issues about the laser platform Wednesday night on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "Dialed In" show when asked about inspection issues this season.

Honda needs help and it's not getting any from IndyCar
The Honda aero kit is not only slow, it's ugly. Teams are ready to throw in the towel
Honda still has much to resolve as it struggles through this IndyCar Series season, but its IndyCar leader is convinced the manufacturer will return in 2016.

"I have every confidence," Steve Eriksen told The Indianapolis Star on Friday. "We want to be there for the 100th Indianapolis 500. (The race) has been too much a part of our history."

Honda has multiyear contracts with its teams, but its commitment to IndyCar expires at year's end. Eriksen, the vice president and chief operating officer of Honda Performance Development, said his group has proposed a contract extension through 2017; he said IndyCar prefers 2020.
