LeMans 24 hour 7: #7 Toyota and #8 Toyota trade lead
The #8 Toyota is now in front
The #8 Toyota is now in front

Seven hours in and the #7 Toyota still leads over the sister #8 Toyota in the 24 Hours of LeMans classic but the #8 Toyota will take the lead in a few minutes when the #7 pits.

For the first 15 minutes or so of this hour, the safety car neutralised the race. Both Toyotas came in during that time, with Fernando Alonso handing #8 Toyota over to Kazuki Nakajima and Jose Maria Lopez replacing Kamui Kobayashi in #7 Toyota. Both had to wait for the safety car trains to pass the pitlane exit, meaning the gap increased to around a minute.

The lead Toyota is still over one lap ahead of the 3rd place car - the #3 Rebellion with Sergey Sirotkin Berthon at the wheel.

$2.3M McLaren Speedtail catches fire
Can McLaren do anything right these days?
Can McLaren do anything right these days?
The McLaren Speedtail is the high-class automaker's newest hypercar that is due to be delivered to customers beginning early next year. But before keys reach the hands of the 106 lucky owners, McLaren has begun to test its cars on public roads—and one was just spotted billowing smoke at a British gas station.

While smoke can be seen pouring from the rear of the car, it's not immediately evident just how much damage the McLaren sustained, nor how the incident itself began. An update from a Facebook page shows that electrical problem was able to be contained and the car itself was saved from being rendered a complete loss.

WEC is 'Socialist Racing'
You have to have your head up your posterior to work hard to be fastest in sportscar racing
You have to have your head up your posterior to work hard to be fastest in sportscar racing
In any Socialist society, all of which fail miserably, if you work hard the government takes your money and gives it to the freeloaders.

In sportscar racing, it's no different. If you work hard to go fast, the series bosses take it away and give it to the inferior.

Aston Martin and Corvette have both been penalized in the latest GTE Pro class Balance of Performance issued for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The Aston Martin Vantage GTE, which took pole on Thursday night thanks to Marco Sorensen's 3m48s lap, has been given a small turbo boost reduction. How stupid can you be to put your car on pole in Sportscar racing, knowing you will be penalized for it.

Marquez snubs Lorenzo: "I don't need his new components"
Marc Marquez
Marc Marquez

The news of the day is that Marc Marquez is playing catch up at Barcelona. The Honda rider preferred to focus on tires rather than set a fast time at all costs today. Aside from that, the Spaniard is also aware of new parts brought by HRC for his team-mate.

That tank reminds me of the Ducati tank, it's related to ergonomics and so I don't need to try it – begins Marc – one of the unique things about Honda is its ability to build two bike with the same base and then develop them. HRC is very good at satisfying its riders' requests. Lorenzo's tank is an element that doesn't take time to bring to the track. It's different if we start talking about the engine or frame, but I don't think we should even waste time there. The bike is proving to be fast and we're on the right path”.

That record stood for more than three decades as an ultimate testament to power, engineering and skill, only falling to an experimental Porsche last year that was custom-built for the task.

Last Monday, that record was surpassed for the second time – by an all-electric car.

Ferrari pushing ahead with Vettel penalty appeal (2nd Update)
Ferrari appealing but normally a 5-sec penalty is not appealable
As we told you, a 5-sec penalty cannot be appealed. Ferrari must have finally read the rule book

UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AutoRacing1.com, The stewards, who are likely embarrassed that they got suckered by Mercedes into penalizing Vettel, are not convincing.

The comment that they gave Vettel "the most lenient punishment" allowed ignores the basic fact that the incident was simply a racing incident and they should have decided that and been done with it and not ruin the race.   Ira Fierberg, CA

Dear Ira, The damage done to F1 by that Steward decision was reprehensible. IndyCar used to make stupid decisions like that after Wally Dallenbach retired, but recently the Stewards are making much better decisions and have taken the 'let'em race' attitude, especially when racing for the win on the final lap or two.
