Kalitta, Wilkerson, Coughlin, Jr. Hold Top Qualifying Spots at Bristol
Doug Kalitta is the current Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier Friday evening at the 17th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.
Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) are also provisional qualifying leaders at the 11th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
Kalitta piloted his Mac Tools dragster to a 3.781-second pass at 326.71 mph during the second round of qualifying to claim the no. spot with Steve Torrence sitting in the second position followed by Leah Pritchett.
Wilkerson powered his Mustang to a 3.895 pass at 328.22 to take the lead in the Funny Car class over Robert Hight and Courtney Force, Coughlin Jr. currently holds the Pro Stock top spot after running a 6.694 at 204.85 in his Chevrolet Camaro followed by Bo Butner and Erica Enders.
Qualifying for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals continues at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Bristol Dragway.
Lowe's To Stay On Johnson's No. 48 Car Through At Least '18 Cup Season
Lowe's is back for at least one more year
NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson has "signed a three-year contract extension that will keep the seven-time champion" at Hendrick Motorsports through '20, while Lowe's has "signed an extension" to stay on Johnson's No. 48 Chevy through '18, according to Dustin Long of NBCSPORTS.com.
Both contracts were "set to expire" after this season. Lowe's has "served as Johnson's sponsor at Hendrick since he drove three Cup races" in '01. Johnson began running full-time in '02. NBCSPORTS.com

Intense week for Ligier at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2017 After long weeks of preparation, Onroak Automotive’s entire force are mobilized for the 85th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Track side, seven Ligier JS P217 are entered in the classic Le Mans race, and 28 Ligier JS P3 in Road to Le Mans, two races organized as a curtain raiser. In the paddock, a support service is in place to meet the needs of the LM P2 and LM P3 teams, and more than 400 guests will go behind the scenes of “the most beautiful race in the world”. To further intensify this event, the manufacturer presented its brand new racing car, the Ligier JS P4.
24 Hours of LeMans Porsche Qualifying Report The two Porsche 919 Hybrids will start third and fourth on the grid in the 85th running of the Le Mans 24-hour race on Saturday at 3pm. With a lap time of 3:17.259 minutes, Neel Jani (CH) claimed the third fastest lap overall on Thursday evening. Timo Bernhard (DE) qualified the Porsche LMP sister car to start fourth on the grid with a lap of 3:18.067 minutes on the 13.629 kilometer long Circuit des 24 Heures.

Veteran stock car and open-wheel driver Sam Hornish Jr. will return to Team Penske this summer to compete in select NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) races for the team, driving the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang. Hornish is currently scheduled to compete in both upcoming series events at Iowa Speedway (June 24 and July 29) and the NXS road course event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (August 12).
