Toyota 'confident' arrested exec Hamp didn't intend to break Japan drug laws
Toyota Motor Corp. expressed confidence in communications chief Julie Hamp, its first female senior executive, after she was arrested Thursday on suspicion of a Japanese drug offense involving a prescribed medication, saying she did not intend to break any laws.

Hamp, 55, who was appointed managing officer and chief communications officer for Toyota in April, told police she did not think she had imported an illegal substance, a spokesman for Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department said.

"Toyota has been made aware of Ms. Hamp's arrest but has no further facts in light of the ongoing investigation by the authorities," Toyota spokesman Shino Yamada said in an emailed statement.

Ecclestone Says Series Will Not Return France's Mangy-Cours Circuit
F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone "has indicated" that the series "will not return to France unless an adequate replacement for the unpopular Magny-Cours circuit is found," according to Pete Gill of SKY SPORTS.

France has not "hosted a race since 2008." Magny-Cours replaced the Paul Ricard circuit as the home of the French GP in '91. While the track itself "received mixed reviews," the venue’s rural location -- "slap bang in the middle of nowhere," according to former Red Bull driver Mark Webber -- "proved a turn-off for supporters and protagonists alike."

Common components include a massive swingarm, Ohlin’s shocks, a slipper clutch, magnesium wheels, and Brembo brake calipers squeezing Yutaka rotors. The street version also features an aluminum frame, under-seat gas tank, and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic bodywork just like the race bike.

Bill could launch new American classic car industry
There could be more classic cars hitting the road soon. Cars that look like classics, that is.

The Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015, introduced this month in the House of Representatives, would allow small companies to produce and sell ready-to-drive replicas of classic cars without subjecting them to the prohibitively expensive safety and emissions tests the major automakers’ vehicles must undergo.

IndyCar's compact schedule burning out team crews
There have been a lot of complaints about the IndyCar Series' schedule, which runs 16 races in five months.

One big complaint is that the offseason is too long. That, IndyCar insiders complain, leads to fan disengagement and lack of exposure during the long offseason.

Another is that the seven-month offseason prompts teams to lay off engineers, mechanics and other crew members. Some team owners simply can't afford to maintain their staff during that much downtime.

Used Chevrolet Volt Batteries Help Power New IT Building
So much for used electric car batteries filling up toxic waste dumps
What happens to the batteries that power Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric cars when their useful life is done? Five of them are helping keep the lights on at the new General Motors Enterprise Data Center at its Milford Proving Ground.

Repurposed scrap Volt battery covers already star in a variety of applications, from bat houses to nesting boxes for endangered duck species. Now, as Chevrolet closes on the second-generation Volt for 2016, it's time to begin tapping the energy left in batteries from first-generation models.

Because the Volt typically draws its power from a band of energy in the battery pack, there is a lot of leftover juice for stationary use. A new solar array and two wind turbines feed the administration building's circuit breaker panel, where the five Volt batteries work in parallel to supply power to the building, delivering net-zero energy use on an annual basis.

Fisher hopes to capitalize on recent IndyCar success
American Josef Newgarden gets 2nd win for Americans Sarah Fisher and Ed Carpenter. Instead of spending the family fortune destroying CART and along with it the sport of IndyCar Racing, Tony George could have spent 1/10th of what he wasted on starting a 4-car team of American drivers and helped grow the huge sport CART created rather than destroy it by created the IRL.
Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing had its best weekend at the track since forming as Sarah Fisher Racing in 2008.

Josef Newgarden and CFH teammate Luca Filippi finished first and second at the Honda Indy Toronto street race Sunday. It was the team's first ever one-two finish and the second victory this season for Newgarden, 24, a promising driver in his fourth season on the open-wheel circuit.

Sunday marked the seventh win for the team, which has grown from a small, low-budget enterprise to one of the most respected up-and-coming teams in the IndyCar paddock.

Still, CFH Racing has a long way to go to attain the resources of the series' big boys - such as Team Penske, Andretti Autosport and Target Chip Ganassi Racing - but underdog image could be one element that makes the team more attractive to fans and sponsors.

"This [victory] is a great story for their team and great story for the league of David and Goliath," said Zak Brown, founder and executive chairman of Just Marketing International, a Zionsville-based motorsports marketing firm. "For sure it will help them in future sponsorships."

Drivers can now access Porsche Car Connect functions even more conveniently, without having to reach for their iPhones. However, the Apple smartphone still continues to manage communication with the vehicle and integrates the Apple Watch as an additional display and control element.

The Apple Watch provides information on the vehicle status and allows certain vehicle functions to be monitored and controlled by tap and gesture input. The “remote” display, for instance, visualises whether windows, doors, boot lid and sunroof are closed; the vehicle can also be locked if necessary by pressure of the finger (“Force Touch” function). The “Carfinder” function shows the location of the car, while the navigation function guides the driver to the position of the vehicle if required. As soon as drivers are in the vicinity of their Porsche, they can easily identify it on a full parking lot or in a multi-storey car park with the functions to sound the horn and flash the lights.

FOX NASCAR Analysts React to Rule Changes for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Following NASCAR's announced rules package changes in effect for the July 11 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES race at Kentucky Speedway, FOX NASCAR analysts Darrell Waltrip and Andy Petree offered their thoughts on what effects the changes might have.

WALTRIP ON WHAT HE EXPECTS DRIVER REACTION TO THE NEW PACKAGE WILL BE AFTER THE KENTUCKY RACE:

"When all is said and done, I expect drivers will say they want the power back. That's what they are missing, and NASCAR is trying to disguise less power with these aero changes.  In all my years as a driver, I always wanted more downforce and more horsepower.   Rules packages like this tend to divide drivers.  Some will like it and be able to handle the changes, while others will hate it.  It's hard to strike a balance and please everyone."

IndyCar: The case of disappearing grandstands
Hotel X construction took out a chunk of grandstands but there are not enough fans anymore for them to bother putting them elsewhere
The number of grandstands at the Honda Indy continued to shrink this year and are now at embarrassing levels. A race that once packed 75,000 fans into Exhibition Place [in the CART days before Tony George destroyed the sport] now likely has somewhere around one-tenth that number in grandstand seats.

The biggest reduction this year happened behind pitlane on the start-finish straight where about half of the seats were removed due to ongoing construction. While there exists room elsewhere at the venue, the seats were not relocated or replaced. In the end, it didn't matter as Sunday's rain meant few of the seats were used. A charitable guess would put the race day crowd at about 10,000. Jeff Pappone/Globe and Mail

IndyCar Honda drivers such as Graham Rahal still overpowered by Chevy
In NASCAR Chevy eats Ford's lunch, and in IndyCar Chevy eats Honda's breakfast, lunch and dinner
Until the likes of Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti can return to consistent podium finishes racing under Honda power, Chevrolet will remain as the undisputed champion power plant for IndyCar.

No disgrace, really, considering Chevrolet is flexing everywhere these days, including weekend victories at LeMans and in NASCAR. But Honda is probably most recognized as a brand with IndyCar. To consistently sit well outside of the points race and the manufacturers hunt this season with 10 of 16 races in the books clearly does not sit well.

Two pieces of good news for Honda include two weeks to kind of regroup as this coming Father's Day weekend will be an off weekend for the series before returning the weekend of June 27 for the oval race in California. The other plus for Honda is, historically, the manufacturer responds pretty quickly to adversity.
