GP2: Vandoorne dominates in Austria
From left, Sergey Sirotkin (Rapax), Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix), Alex Lynn (DAMS)
Stoffel Vandoorne continued his domination of feature races this year with a crushing performance in this afternoon’s race in Austria, locking out the top spot once again as he has done each time out since Abu Dhabi last year, despite the best efforts today of podium finishers Sergey Sirotkin and Alex Lynn.

Once again the win was set up at the start, with the McLaren test driver starting from pole for the fourth time this year and denying a fast starting Sirotkin into turn one, with teammate and fellow front row starter Nobuharu Matsushita slow off the line but holding off Raffaele Marciello, Nick Yelloly and Rio Haryanto, while behind him Williams test driver Lynn lost 3 spots at the start but picked them all back up again before the end of the first lap.

Kendall, Martin, Ruby and others inducted Friday night
Four-time IMSA champion Tommy Kendall was one of six members inducted to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America on Thursday night. He was joined by fellow luminaries Mark Martin, Ricky Carmichael, Lloyd Ruby, Walker Evans and Duke Nalon.

"This is awesome, but at the same time it's hard to process - it's hard to believe," Kendall said. "I've kept active driving up until last year, but when I think about it, my real career ended nearly 20 years ago when I stopped racing full time at the end of 1997."

Erik Jones dominates in repeat win at Iowa
NEWTON, Iowa — Last season, a powerful run through Iowa Speedway helped Erik Jones finally emerge from the tall shadows cast by bad luck.

But the talented 19-year-old's relationship with misfortune re-formed in 2015 - until, again, Iowa.

Jones entered Friday's American Ethanol 200 winless in eight NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts this season and stung by back-to-back finishes of 23rd and 15th.

NASCAR teams will bear most costs for new rules change
Sprint Cup Series teams will bear a vast majority of the cost to implement a new aerodynamic rules package for next month’s race at Kentucky Speedway, the Observer has learned.

According to a NASCAR memo distributed to teams this week, a copy of which was provided to the Observer, Cup series teams will be responsible for the cost of virtually all the changes required for cars to participate in next month’s Quaker State 400.

Indy Car- The Best Show On Track that nobody sees
Graham Rahal

[Editor's Note: Yes IndyCar puts on some great racing, but because they insist on showing the majority of their races on NBC Sports Network instead of ABC network TV, hardly anyone even knows the series exists. This has resulted in a shrinking fan base. The IndyCar brass do like receiving that hefty check from NBCSN, which helps fund the Leader Card welfare program. Welfare breeds mediocrity and half a field of ride-buyers. Put all the races on ABC, with a guaranteed 1 million+ viewers per race and the teams will begin to attract sponsors and they won't need the welfare money and they won't need to rely on ride-buyers to stay afloat. Makes too much sense, therefore, IndyCar will never do it.]

While other sports grabs the national spotlight, a race series is going on with just as exciting and thrilling competition. It showcases some of the best drivers in the world, racing at death-defying speeds around tracks all over North America, complete with adoring fans roaring with delight every time their favorite driver passes by. Kids clamor to get their idol's autograph. Loyal viewers tune in on TV every weekend. And races around the nation are seeing a resurgence in attendance.

F1: Vettel leads final practice in Austria
Sebastian Vettel before the rains came

In a session slowed by rain for the final 20 minutes, thereby preventing ultimate fast times, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel turned the fastest lap for the 2nd session in a row to top final practice for the Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring. Vettel was the only driver below the 1m10s mark with a lap of 1m09.994s, which was slower than his fast time Friday of 1m09.600s

Lewis Hamilton was 2nd for Mercedes with a time of 1m10.011s just 0.017s adrift. Showing the strength of Ferrari this weekend, Kimi Raikkonen was third at 1m10.177s.

NASCAR Michigan TV Rating (2nd Update)
UPDATE #2 NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Michigan drew 3.5 million viewers on FS1 Sunday afternoon, down 17% from last year (4.3M) and down 22% from 2013 (4.5M), both on TNT, and the least-watched edition of the race since at least 2000 (viewership prior to 2001 was not available). Viewership for the race did not dip below four million in eight seasons on TNT (2007-14), and reached as high as 8.5 million on the FOX broadcast network in 2003. Keep in mind this year's race was hampered by several rain delays. FS1 averaged 3.0 million viewers for nearly 2 1/2 hours of rain delay coverage. Each Sprint Cup race on FS1 has had a double-digit decline in viewership, with the last two down from coverage on TNT. The downward trend is not confined to FS1, however. Excluding rainouts, eight of the past nine Sprint Cup telecasts have had a decline from last year, with the lone exception being Fontana in March (+3%). That is a far cry from the solid start to the season, in which the first three races each posted gains. Sports Media Watch / ShowBuzzDaily

Nurburgring Bans Future Lap-Record Attempts
Some records, it seems, are not made to be broken. News from Germany that the owners of the Nurburgring have effectively banned timed runs over the 12.9-mile long Nordschleife means that the current production-car record of 6 minutes and 57 seconds, set by the Porsche 918 in 2013, could well stand forever.

Speed limits were imposed on parts of the Nordschleife following a fatal crash in a VLN endurance race back in March, when a factory-entered Nissan GT-R being driven by Jann Mardenborough took off on a high-speed crest and left the track, killing a spectator. The limits have stayed in place during manufacturer testing, the infamous "tourist driving" sessions, and also subsequent racing. And now Nurburgring GmbH has confirmed to Car and Driver that they won’t be waived for manufacturers wanting to try to set record times, even if they take exclusive use of the whole track.

Austria set for 'silver versus red' battle
Can Vettel take it to Mercedes in Austria?
(GMM)  Those with a ticket for Sunday's Austrian grand prix could be in for a 'silver versus red' treat.

Last year, 90,000 race-day spectators watched on as Red Bull organized the first F1 race in picturesque Spielberg for over a decade.

But it is believed only 50,000 will be trackside in 2015.

"I suppose no one wants to watch two silver cars speed off into the distance," said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

The day after Le Mans
The winning No. 19 Porsche
The winning No. 19 Porsche
The crossing of the finish line by the two 919 Hybrid race cars at the Circuit des 24 Heures yesterday, Sunday, June 14, marked an historic moment for Porsche. After an absence of 16 years, Porsche returned to Le Mans in 2014 – and just one year later, the brand triumphed with a first and second-place finish.

“This one-two finish in Le Mans 2015 is such a fabulous result we wouldn’t have dreamed of”, said Porsche AG Chairman Matthias Muller after the race. “The entire team has done a great job over the recent three or four years and well deserve this success.”, Wolfgang Hatz, Executive Board Member for Research and Development, said he viewed the double victory as “a reward for the courage our development engineers displayed with their 919 Hybrid concept, and for the tremendous effort made by the 230 employees involved in the project”.

The Hills are Alive - Austria's Top 5 gifts to F1

  1. Red Bull Ring Main Straight
    Red Bull Ring
Wildlife – Canada might present the hazard of the occasional small rodent but Austria’s circuit has the big stuff – deer. Stefan Johansson memorably demolished one (and his McLaren) during practice in 1987 and Juan Pablo Montoya nearly encountered another in 2001 when his engineer informed him that a deer – he told JPM that it was “like a horse with horns” – was on track. The Colombian’s calm response was a simple “oh, dear”.
  2. Atmosphere – It’s got all the things a proper grand prix should have – high speeds, variable weather and a passionate crowd, most of whom are living, very boisterously, in tents. If that sounds like classics such as Silverstone, the Nurburgring, Spa and Monza, well, there you go.

GP2: Vandoorne dashes to seventh GP2 pole
Vandoorne and Nobuharu Matsushita jpg.jpg
ART teammates Vandoorne and Nobuharu Matsushita lockout front row

Once again on stellar form, Series leader Stoffel Vandoorne achieved a record today at the Red Bull Ring by snatching his seventh pole position, the most in GP2’s history. With a lap time of 1:14.174, he beat his teammate Nobuharu Matsushita by 0.089s. Just like in the first round of the season at Sakhir, it will be an all ART Grand Prix front row. Pierre Gasly completed the top three.

The sun appeared above the Austrian track as the pitlane opened and the drivers fed onto it on Supersoft Pirelli tires. This morning’s fastest man Sergey Sirotkin was the early pace setter and the first stint of the session saw him and Vandoorne swapping places at the top of the standings. Both drivers even clocked in an identical lap time of 1.14.721 at one point. Just before the halfway mark, Sirotkin reclaimed provisional pole having lapped the track in a 1:14.966.

F1: Vettel tops Practice 2 in Austria
Sebastian Vettel fastest despite gremlins
Despite having more problems with his Ferrari, this time his gearbox, Sebastian Vettel turned the fastest lap in the 2nd practice session for the Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring.  Vettel's time of 1m09.600s set early in the session before his gearbox acted up was fast enough to pip Nico Rosberg's sandbagging Mercedes by just 0.011sec.

After only getting 4 laps in during the morning session, Vettel sat out the 2nd half of the afternoon session with gearbox woes.

Kimi Raikkonen was third for Ferrari followed by the Lotus Mercedes of Pastor Maldonado.

GP2: Sirotkin tops free practice in Austria
Sergey Sirotkin
Russian ace Sergey Sirotkin has had the perfect start to his Austrian weekend by setting up the fastest lap time of today’s free practice session in a blazing 1:14.880, three tenths clear of Mitch Evans. Series leader Stoffel Vandoorne completed the top three.

The session opened under grey skies and in cool conditions with the drivers feeding onto the Red Bull Ring track on Medium Pirelli tires. Sirotkin was quick to set the early pace ahead of Pierre Gasly, until Vandoorne claimed the top spot lapping the Austrian track three tenths quicker than the Russian.

NASCAR: Testing drivers comment on rules change
Because his team was among several testing tires at Richmond International Raceway on Wednesday, David Ragan is hoping NASCAR doesn't have any plans to alter its short-track rules before the Sprint Cup circuit returns here in September for the Federated Auto Parts 400. "I think they've got a pretty good package when it comes to short-track tracing," said Ragan, who drives for Michael Waltrip Racing. "I don't think your aero package is as important as the fast 1½-mile racetracks. When you're at Martinsville and Bristol and even here in Richmond - it's a little faster - it's important to have your tires working together, your mechanical grip right. Aero is certainly important, but it's not as important as those big tracks."

NASCAR: Lug Nut or Valve Stem Issue?
Flat tires caused when valve stems have been knocked off by lug nuts during pit stops have been a recurring issue for teams this season. The #19 of Joe Gibbs Racing driver Carl Edwards, the #27 of Paul Menard (Richard Childress Racing) and more recently, the #4 of Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing) are among those that have been affected by the problem.

According to some in the garage, the problem isn't that the lug nuts occasionally strike the stem during a tire change. Instead, it's how the stem is seated in the wheel that makes it easier to be knocked off. "I don't even know how to fix it," Rodney Childers, crew chief for Harvick, said after Sunday's race at Michigan International Speedway. "Definitely got to do something though."  NASCAR.com

Porsche finishes production of the 918 Spyder technology pioneer
Finishing touches on the last 918 Spyder
Finishing touches on the last 918 Spyder
Stuttgart.
Today, the checkered flag marked the finish: after 21 months of production time, the final Porsche 918 Spyder came off the line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen according to schedule. But the legacy of this technology pioneer will reach far beyond its production time. Future generations of sports cars will benefit directly from innovations of the 918 Spyder.

The 918 Spyder was systematically developed to be a performance hybrid with plug-in technology. The hybrid super sports concept car made its debut at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show where it met with overwhelming approval. In the summer of 2010, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG gave the green light for its production development.

F1: Mercedes begin their Austrian Waltz
Nico Rosberg
Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton prepared for their Austrian Waltz this weekend by topping the opening practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix. Rosberg set a best time of 1m10.401s around the Red Bull Ring, but Hamilton always lets Rosberg lead a session or two before he smokes him on Sunday.

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen was third while his teammate Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari stopped early and was an embarrassing dead last as the German is suffering his 2nd straight weekend of horrible Ferrari reliability.

Valtteri Bottas was fourth fastest in his Williams while Felipe Nasr rounded out the top-5 in what was largely a track-cleaning session outside of Zeltweg.
