Jehan Daruvala made it back-to-back FIA Formula 3 race wins and three in a row for PREMA Racing, as he came from second to win in Le Castellet, France. There was heartbreak for polesitter Jake Hughes, who lost P1 to the Indian, before making contact with Marcus Armstrong whilst battling for position and dropping to the back of the grid. Robert Shwartzman took advantage of the turmoil to claim P2, with Pedro Piquet completing the podium.

Hughes made the perfect getaway when the lights went out, standing firm in first and setting the fastest lap. Shwartzman suffered contrasting fortunes and dropped back to 6th, behind his PREMA teammates, as well as Piquet and Bent Viscaal.

Bottas leads Hamilton
Bottas leads Hamilton
The superior Mercedes F1 car is too much for Ferrari and Red Bull as the Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton again ran 1-2 in the third practice session for the French GP at Paul Ricard Saturday morning.

Bottas tuned a lap of 1m30.159s to nip his teammate by just 0.041s - nearly identical times since the driver means almost nothing in F1.

The Ferrari's were out to lunch in 3rd and 4th, Charles Leclerc 0.446s behind Bottas and Vettel 0.474s back - again near identical times because the car is everything in F1.

Last year's traffic jam
Last year's traffic jam
French Grand Prix organizers hailed their new traffic management scheme as a success on Friday, after gridlock sorely tested the patience of Formula One fans in 2018, but ticket sales were down.

Eric Boullier, the former McLaren racing director who is now a strategic advisor for the Le Castellet circuit, said the evidence was encouraging.

“At this time of the day last year we had 6,000 people on site, because they were all blocking the road, and we have 15,000 now,” he told Reuters after the first of two free practice sessions.

Michelin has refined the tire they prototyped years ago
Michelin's new Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System (Uptis) does away with one of the defining aspects of tires as we've known them for more than 100 years: the air inside.

Unlike past attempts at airless tires, Uptis functions the way other modern tires do and, Michelin claims, will provide a similar driving experience.

Unveiled at the company's sustainable-mobility-focused Movin'On Summit in Montreal today, Uptis is a tire without a traditional sidewall that carries its load by the top thanks to a new resin-embedded fiberglass material that Michelin was granted over 50 patents for.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud dominated the month of May, winning both the Indianapolis Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500, however he is one of only two Chevy drivers to have won a race this season. The other is his Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden, who won at St. Petersburg, Detroit and Texas Motor Speedway.

Mercedes destroying competitors and destroying F1
Mercedes destroying competitors and destroying F1
(GMM) Chase Carey has admitted the one-sided 2019 season may be contributing to Formula 1's crashing television ratings in some markets.

In Germany, for instance, viewership on free-to-air RTL this season is down compared to 2018 by a factor of about a million pairs of eyes per race.

But Carey, the F1 CEO, says that in other markets, the numbers are actually up.

$175m budget cap for 2021 'a big number' - Brown
Zak Brown and Lando Norris
Zak Brown and Lando Norris
(GMM) The $175 million a year budget cap for 2021 will not provide the level playing ground some F1 teams were hoping for.

That is the view of Zak Brown, the McLaren supremo who told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that the leaked figure was "not a surprise".

"Of course there are things that I would like to be different, but it makes no sense to fight for changes that will not come. That's wasted energy," he said.

No third Penske car for Bathurst
Tim Cindric uses every excuse in the book for why no third car
Tim Cindric uses every excuse in the book for why no third car
Team Penske boss Tim Cindric has ruled out an extra Bathurst 1000 wildcard entry in the foreseeable future for preparation and logistical reasons writes Mark Fogarty.

According to Cindric, as long as testing remains severely restricted, there is no chance of an entry at Bathurst for Team Penske stars like Australian IndyCar ace Will Power.

Furthermore, he points out that Bathurst’s clash with the IMSA season-ending Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta means the operation doesn’t have the resources to run a third car in the Mount Panorama classic.

Antonio Giovinazzi
Antonio Giovinazzi
(GMM) Antonio Giovinazzi has vowed to "never give up" in his quest to improve and succeed in Formula 1.

The Italian rookie immediately impressed when he stepped in at short notice at Sauber in 2017 for the then injured Pascal Wehrlein. But he also made waves by crashing in both qualifying and the race in China.

Backed by Ferrari, 25-year-old Giovinazzi sat out 2018 as a test driver, but has returned this year for his first full-time race season with Alfa Romeo.

Video: Saving fuel and still going fast
Being asked to save fuel isn’t one of the real fun parts of being a race driver, but the ability to conserve fuel - while still going fast - has won an awful lot of big races.

In IndyCar racing, it allows us to often run a different strategy and take advantage of the caution periods, make quicker pit stops, or even make one less pit stop than the others.

In their latest video (Safe is Fast) a group of top IndyCar drivers, led by the legendary fuel miser Scott Dixon, reveal their fuel-saving secrets.

Due to low TV Ratings "No Plans" To Replace Waltrip In NASCAR Booth
Darrell Waltrip
Darrell Waltrip
Fox Sports CEO & Exec Producer Eric Shanks said there are no current plans to replace NASCAR analyst Darrell Waltrip next year and instead could contract its booth from three people to two. Waltrip is retiring from his 19-year run with Fox Sports after this weekend’s broadcast at Sonoma, which is the last Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race this season before NBC Sports takes over next weekend.

There has been speculation about who will replace Waltrip next year and join play-by-play man Mike Joy and fellow analyst Jeff Gordon, but Shanks told THE DAILY that it is not a sure thing he will be replaced. Shanks in an email wrote, “Darrell has defined FOX NASCAR coverage from Day 1. You can’t simply snap your fingers and replace someone like him. For now, there is no plan to add anyone to the booth for 2020 … we’re just focusing on saying ‘thank you’ to DW.’” Adam Stern/SBD

Video: How Modern IndyCars Make So Much Power From Such Tiny Engines
Honda IndyCar engine
Honda IndyCar engine
In IndyCar, engine manufacturers have to comply with a strict set of rules that define displacement, cylinder count, and boost levels. Currently, the only engine configuration allowed is a twin-turbocharged 2.2-liter V-6. Here's how teams are able to squeeze more than 700 horsepower from such a small motor.

As Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained shows in his latest video, it comes down to two main factors. The first is RPM. IndyCar engines can rev all the way to 12,000 RPM—far higher than your average road car engine. That means more power strokes per minute, without valve float or knock.

Pagenaud's Indy 500 car will never race again
Simon Pagenaud
Simon Pagenaud
When Simon Pagenaud parked his No. 22 Menards Chevrolet in victory lane after winning the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on May 26, it was the end of the road for chassis No. 042.

In the Team Penske rotation of NTT IndyCar Series cars since 2013, the Dallara IR-12 had used four different aerodynamic packages over the years. It was a car that powered Pagenaud to many of his nine victories since joining Team Penske in 2015, including a five-win campaign in 2016 when he won the season championship.

Truly autonomous, aka Level 5, cars are still science fiction
There are still morons out there that think they can make computers do what the world's greatest computer - the human brain - the one God created
There are still morons out there that think they can make automobile autonomous computers do what the world's greatest computer - the human brain - the one God created - can do

Machines are already a huge help to auto drivers. Take automatic emergency braking, or AEB. That’s when your car stops itself if it detects that you’re about to hit another vehicle or other obstacle. According to new data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, AEB reduces rear-end crashes by 50%, and reduces crashes with injuries by 56%. In the U.S., there were 1.7 million such rear-end crashes in 2012, resulting in 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Mass deployment will take many years, but the NTSB has estimated that this technology could eventually reduce fatalities and injuries from rear-end crashes by 80%.

By 2022, nearly all new vehicles in the U.S. will have at least automatic emergency braking, thanks to a voluntary commitment made by 20 auto makers, from a small but growing percentage of new cars today.

AEB and related Level 1 technologies such as lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection and reverse automatic braking—collectively known as ADAS, or advanced driver assistance systems--are just the beginning.

Will the ruling be overturned?
(GMM) The FIA could rule within hours on Ferrari's request for a "review" of the time penalty that cost Sebastian Vettel victory in Canada.

The review is believed to now be in the hands of the French GP stewards at Paul Ricard, who will connect with the Montreal stewards by video conference.

Sources suggest the 'new evidence' presented by Ferrari as the basis for the review request is footage from Vettel's backwards-facing cockpit camera.

Alonso eyes 'winning car' for 2020 F1 return
Alonso needs to realize his time has passed in F1. None of the top teams wanted him before. What has changed now?
Alonso needs to realize his time has passed in F1. None of the top teams wanted him before. What has changed now?
(GMM) Fernando Alonso has admitted he could return to Formula 1 in 2020.

The new back-to-back Le Mans winner will not return to the world endurance championship next year, and now he has told the Italian magazine Man In Town that the F1 door remains open.

"If F1 becomes an attractive option again, there is no doubt that I would go back," said the 37-year-old Spaniard.

Zak Brown has ruled out a 2020 seat at McLaren for Alonso, but the two-time world champion is believed to be eyeing a cockpit at one of the top three teams.

"I had contact with Mercedes in 2016 when Nico Rosberg decided to retire," Alonso revealed. "I talked to Toto Wolff but in the end we did not reach a definitive yes. I was at McLaren and it was not easy to find a solution.

Turning a new leaf
Antonio Giovinazzi
Antonio Giovinazzi
Formula One seasons are not a continuum. The succession of races provides teams and drivers with the chance of a fresh start every two weeks, a clean slate at the beginning of each race weekend on which to build.

Such turning point is in Antonio Giovinazzi’s sights as we head to the French Grand Prix in Le Castellet, the eighth round of the 2019 season. The young Italian roared past throngs of his excited countrymen last Saturday, with thousands lining the streets between Faenza and Brisighella: as he collected the Trofeo Bandini award, a prestigious acknowledgment of his career path from karting to Formula One, the love and affection of his compatriots reminded him of the importance of his role as the first Italian in Formula One since 2011. He was waved and cheered on, every meter of the way.
