Honda Indy preparations under way
The 2014 Honda Indy is less than one month away, and the fun has already started.

Crews have been hard at work, converting Toronto’s streets surrounding Exhibition Place into race tracks for a double dose of races starting on July 18.

"Seeing the Indy Cars whip around the streets of Toronto, the speeds that we hit is cool itself, but over the three days it's so much more than that," said James Hinchcliffe, an IndyCar Series driver.

"It’s fun it's fast, its loud, its sexy, almost sensory overload, but give me things to do with my friends, my buddies, my girl friends, let me come down and check it out," said Charlie Johnstone, president of Honda Indy Toronto.

This year, you won’t be restricted to just watching really fast cars. For instance, for the first time, you could watch lumberjacks duke it out in the STIHL Timbersports Series.

"We know they get huge crowds and I think with our Timbersports and their racing it’s going to go hand-in-hand pretty well," said Cecil Starr, a lumberjack athlete.

The organizers of the Honda Indy in Toronto introduced these activities outside the race last year and it’s been a hit since, so expect a lot more of these in upcoming races.

IndyCar Texas TV rating (Update) UPDATE The final ratings for the Texas IndyCar race on NBC Sports Network were down from the overnights:

Item Rating Viewers (000s)
Race 0.3 424
Pre-Race 0.2 267
Post-Race 0.2 244

06/11/14 The IndyCar Series Firestone 600 from Texas earned a 0.4 overnight rating on NBCSN Saturday night, down 64% from last year on ABC (1.1).  But cable ratings are different that network TV ratings.  Although the rating was down 64% the number of viewers were down over 80%.......and is what really matters.

As we have been saying all along. NBC Sports Network remains the noose around IndyCar's neck.

NASCAR Sonoma TV Ratings
TNT eked out only the third increase in viewership for NASCAR Sprint Cup coverage this season. Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race from Sonoma earned a 2.8 U.S. rating and 4.7 million viewers, down 7% in ratings and virtually flat in viewership compared to last year (3.0, 4.7M) and down 15% and 10%, respectively, from 2012 (3.3, 5.2M). Viewership for the race was up just 0.3% from last year, rising from 4.66 million to 4.68 million. Still, that marked the third viewership increase of the season for Sprint Cup racing, and the second on TNT. Considering the competition from the World Cup, and the overall down season for NASCAR, any increase over last year is fairly impressive. Even so, this year's race ranks as the second-lowest rated from Sonoma since at least 1998 and the third-least viewed since at least 2002. Sports Media Watch / Bloomberg / TV By the Numbers

Tracy headlines 2014 Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame Class
Paul Tracy was called many things during his outstanding racing career. Boring was never one of them. AR1 congratulates 'PT' on his well-deserved induction into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Scott Maxwell and Paul Tracy were fierce rivals as rookies, but they’re sharing the checkered flag as both are inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.

Now 50 and 45 respectively, they’re to be honored along with road racer Diana Carter and builders John Magill and Norris McDonald, Sept. 27 in the hall’s 20th annual induction ceremonies, presented by Canadian Tire Corporation.

Having accelerated away from more formal black-tie ceremonies, the fan-friendly Hall of Fame celebration is returning to the Glen Gould Studio in downtown Toronto for a second year.

“It is especially ironic to be inducted with Paul, as we have now come full circle from our early Formula Ford days in the 1980’s, where we cut our teeth as youngsters and established our reputations going head to head against one another” said Maxwell,” a class winner in the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans and veteran of the American Le Mans and NASCAR Rolex Grand-Am series who continues racing while operating a highly popular motorsport enthusiasts’ store in downtown Toronto.

Tracy, Indy Car champion with seven wins in 2003 and runner-up in the disputed Indianapolis 500 of 2002, said he was blown away by the career-capping honor.

Hunter-Reay & Dixon earn ESPY nominations
2013 Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon
INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, June 24, 2014) - Reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon and recently-crowned Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay are nominees in the "Best Driver" category for the annual ESPY Awards.

Andretti Autosport's Hunter-Reay earned the Best Driver ESPY in 2013 after claiming his first Verizon IndyCar Series title in a dramatic 2012 season finale at Auto Club Speedway. He won the 98th Indianapolis 500 in May - the first by an American since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006 -  in a dramatic late-race duel with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.

2014 Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay
"It's such an honor to be nominated again," Hunter-Reay said. "This is more exciting news following what was one of the most intense finishes in the history of the Indy 500. The list of ESPY nominees includes top athletes from around the world and in so many forms of sport. The ESPY we won following our Verizon IndyCar Series championship sits amongst the awards of my most significant accomplishments."

Dixon, driver of the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, earned his third series title with a late-season run that saw him rally from a nearly 80-point deficit win by 27 points over Castroneves.

Congressional hearing to focus on Indy 500 security
IMS President Doug Boles will testify at a Congressional hearing regarding security measures for major events.
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — If you feel safe when you go to the Indianapolis 500, you need to know that the planning to keep race fans secure is nonstop. Some of that planning is now being shared with others and Congress is playing a role.

Indiana Congresswoman Susan Brooks, R-5th District, conducted a field hearing Monday in New Jersey to examine the security at major events including the Indy 500. One of the things that came out is that tighter security measures are on the way.

The 300,000 or so race fans who come to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May are being watched on video cameras. This year, for the first time, the federal government helped out with extra cameras and helicopters, according to testimony given by IMS President Doug Boles.

“We had eight Homeland Security folks from Chicago that actually came down, helped us run our event,” said Boles. “It turned out to be a seamless relationship.”

“One of the keys to success,” said Rep. Brooks, “is thorough planning and coordination.”

Numerous safety revisions made to Houston circuit
IndyCar's return to the streets of Houston in 2013 left a haunting impression on many who witnessed Dario Franchitti's career-ending crash at Turn 5. Flying fence structures that landed in the grandstands, not to mention accident debris that injured fans, also tainted the event's first running after a five-year hiatus.

As the series returns for this weekend's Grand Prix of Houston double-header, drivers and fans will find a number of necessary safety improvements in the wake of what took place last year. INDYCAR, sanctioning body for the Verizon IndyCar Series, performed and concluded a thorough and detailed investigation of the crash, finding multiple improvements for the track's safety measures to be increased and areas for its spec Dallara DW12 chassis to be strengthened.

Michelin returns to historic Watkins Glen
The #56 BMW Team RLL will be one of the Michelin shod entries in this weekend's six hour race at Watkins Glen.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 24, 2014) - The first TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series event at Watkins Glen International marks the first time that Michelin has raced in a major event at the storied circuit in nearly 15 years.

Michelin technical partner teams from Viper Team Oreca and Chamberlain Motorsport Viper swept the podium at the 1999 FIA GT Championship race at Watkins Glen in October 1999.

Competing in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class in the TUDOR Championship, Michelin will try to match that success as its 2014 technical partner teams from BMW Team RLL, Corvette Racing, Porsche North America, Risi Competizione Ferrari and Krohn Racing Ferrari and, ironically SRT Motorsports Viper.

The 3.37-mile, 11-turn circuit, with over 140 feet in elevation changes twice each lap, presents a number of technical challenges including long, fast straightaways ending in downhill cornering, uphill exits and a mix off high, medium and low speed corners and heavy braking zones.

Kyle Busch makes odd comments about M&M's
File it under things that make you go "hmm..." but there was an interesting exchange over the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing radio frequency after Carl Edwards won the Toyota/SaveMart 350 on Sunday. While Kyle Busch was driving into the garage after race he asked, "Is the M&Ms contract signed yet?" To which an unidentified voice replies, "No". Crew chief Dave Rogers then adds, "But you fought hard all day. Sorry we didn't bring you a better race car. You drove all day. Bring it back to us." While we're not sure what to make of the comments, the timing seems curious, particularly since J.D. Gibbs told reporters this weekend that M&Ms will remain with Busch through 2015. Motorsport.com

Spanky's trailer
A photo from Spanky's trailer - To Spanky, you are the best, (signed) Denis Hulme
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, In Stephen Cox’s great series about the L&M Porsche part 3 of 7, Marilyn Motschenbacher Halder talks about my old friend, Spanky Smith.

Their social circle was small and intimate. Marilyn Motschenbacher Halder spent much of her time at a the universally recognized social center of Can Am’s inner circle known as "Spanky’s trailer."

"I don't even remember Spanky’s last name. I don’t think anybody ever knew it," Marilyn said. "It was one of those old Winnebagos. There would be Denny [Hulme], George [Follmer], Revvie [Pete Revson], and the photographers, and Lothar and me, and the wives. Jackie Oliver would be there. We’d always gather at Spanky’s trailer and everybody would sit there and laugh and shop talk. They’d say, ‘You should have seen me in this turn!’ and just bench race."

Edwin ‘Spanky’ Smith was a racing photographer from Endicott, NY. He was quite a bit older than I was but we both loved racing and we both collected everything we could get our hands on at races. We traded team stickers and other memorabilia. Spanky died in the 1980’s and his brother was faced with liquidating Spanky’s entire house full of racing memorabilia. I purchased his sticker collection and others wound up with his pins, photos, and collectables like the oversized check Bruce McLaren was given in a Can-Am victory lane.

IndyCar mid-season report card
What kind of a season has it been so far in the Verizon IndyCar series? Chip Ganassi's team has four cars and no wins while Ed Carpenter sports one car, two drivers and a pair of victories. Former champions Sebastian Bourdais and Tony Kanaan have each led one lap compared to rookie Jack Hawksworth's 32. Will Power has had four on-track penalties, two wins, three runner-ups and leads teammate Helio Castroneves in the point standings. Ryan Hunter-Reay is either brilliant or on the hook. Despite two DNFs, Marco Andretti ranks fifth in the standings.

That's the good, bad and ugly of the first eight races of 2014 and it's also time for the mid-season report cards – a tradition started 32 years ago by yours truly that is embraced by few, scorned by many but enough of a nuisance that Roger Penske puts down the Wall Street Journal for two minutes to look it over.

So here goes and, with credit to A.J. Foyt, no cryin' from any momma's boys about their grades. Suck it up and get better. More at Racer.com

Bernie would be happy if F1 grid shrank
Bernie Ecclestone has never exactly been a champion of the little guy. As you might expect, he seems pretty unconcerned with keeping the smaller, financially troubled teams on the grid. Could this spell more trouble for Gene Haas' American F1 effort?
Formula 1 commercial chief Bernie Ecclestone says he is not afraid of losing teams from the grand prix grid if financial struggles become too much for any of the field.

Speculation about the economic health of several F1 teams has been rife in recent months, amid rumors of some squads looking for new owners. But, asked if he was worried that the current 22-car entry might shrink, Ecclestone replied: "In fact, I would be happy. It's like a poker game. You don't know the other players. They should not be in the game. You should not be in this business if you cannot afford it."

Ecclestone said his main concerns about the state of F1 related to its spectacle and sporting regulations. He reiterated his belief that the 2014 cars "do not have the right noise" and also hit out at the stewards' approach, during a Austrian Grand Prix weekend in which track limits infringements at the Red Bull Ring's Turn 8 proved contentious.

"We have too many rules that are not necessary," said Ecclestone. "When a driver crosses a white line he will be punished. That's wrong.

Hey, Let's Hold a Car Race On a Cement Parking Lot During Summer
There is no better way to ensure fans won't show up for an IndyCar race, or return in future years, than to hold it in the heat of the day in summer in Houston.  The forecast is for 90 degrees and humid.  Does IndyCar have a death wish in Houston?  Why isn't this race in mid to late April after the rodeo and the Houston Open?
Indy cars raced around the Reliant Stadium park last October. There were problems with the track and seating layout which resulted in 13 spectators going to the hospital after the car of Dario Franchitti went airborne. Franchitti's injuries were severe enough that he had to quit racing.

The IndyCar Series returns to Houston this weekend for the Grand Prix of Houston. The weekend's once again brings a doubleheader of Indy racing with races on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Race organizers promise safer conditions -- the blame for last October partly goes, they claim, to having to squeeze the event into a weekend between Texans games which did not allow for enough time to fix problems with the track. But while the actual course might be safer, conditions for drivers, crews, and spectators promise to be much, much, much worse.

NASCAR afraid its drivers can't handle the rain
Social media did a nasty burnout Saturday while NASCAR officials delayed the start of the Gardner Denver 200 at Road America for 57 minutes because of ever-changing weather conditions.

Racing fans on Twitter took the Nationwide Series to task for over-managing the competition.

"Too wet for regular tires, but not wet enough for rain tires," wrote one fan. "This is the first red flag for clamminess I've seen."

Even IndyCar driver Graham Rahal weighed in: "Why caution when rain starts coming down? How bout just pit and get rain tires? Mixes up strategy, makes it fun."

Gaughan holds off faster Tagliani at Road America (Update) UPDATE Correction: The article below on the Nationwide race at Elkhart Lake says that there have been only two other NASCAR  races in the rain, both Nationwide races. In February 1972  the Citrus 250 race also included rain, with rain tires planned in advance, and used when it started to rain at Daytona.

06/22/14
Former IndyCar driver Alex Tagliani won the pole and dominated the race.  But his Ford ran out of gas and he had to limp to the pits. He then came from 20+ to 2nd in the last two laps and if the race had gone another lap he’d have been first as Gaughan takes the lucky win.

Brendan Gaughan survived two early off-track excursions and a race in which much of the second half was contested in rain as cars rode on wet weather tires to win Gardner Denver 200 Fired Up by Johnsonville NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.

It was the third time in NASCAR history -- all on road courses and all on the Nationwide circuit -- that a race has been run in rain. The other two were in Montreal in 2008 and 2010, also on a road course (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve).

Racing in the rain ignited something in Gaughan that helped overcome and forget his early misfortune and go on to earn his first career win on the Nationwide circuit in 98 starts. He also has eight career wins in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

"I love racing in the rain; it's fun," said Gaughan, who was in the 2010 Montreal race, and has driven in rain several other times in other series. "And when you're good at it, it makes it even more fun.

"I haven't smelled blood in a long time, that's something I've been lacking lately, that killer attitude. When it started to rain, even without the wiper blade, I started to smell blood and said, 'I'm coming.'

"It's fun to watch guys who haven't done it in the rain. They don't understand the rain line, and fortunately for me, I did."

Patrik Sandell wins inaugural Wash DC GRC race
Patrik Sandell leads
Patrik Sandell took a thrilling victory in Sunday’s Red Bull Global Rallycross event, Volkswagen Rallycross DC, held at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. In the first motorsports event to take place in the nation’s capital in over a decade, Sandell earned his first Red Bull GRC victory by beating Nelson Piquet Jr. and teammate Joni Wiman to the finish.

“It’s absolutely perfect,” Sandell said after the event. “I felt when we came here that if I could just be smart and not make any mistakes, I could fight for the top. And I knew that the start at the final was so important, so I just tried to focus on that as much as I could. I think I took the start directly on the light, and that made me come off the line so good. That was the key to everything."

Volkswagen Rallycross DC Reaches Capacity Crowd in First Year
Officials from Volkswagen Rallycross DC announced a sell-out Sunday crowd at the inaugural running of Volkswagen Rallycross DC-the third round of the 2014 Red Bull Global Rallycross Series.  The temporary rallycross track built on the Festival Grounds of Washington, D.C.'s historic RFK Stadium reached capacity before Sunday's main event. After record first-day attendance for a Red Bull Global Rallycross event Saturday, strong walkup figures boosted crowds to capacity on Sunday.  While final figures are still being compiled, the event saw more than 10,000 visitors over the two days.

"In some respects, this first year was a test run for us and so we were conservative with our plans. But, Volkswagen Rallycross DC exceeded our expectations," said Tim Mayer-General Manager, Volkswagen Rallycross DC.  "This sell-out crowd is proof positive of how the incredible action of Red Bull Global Rallycross, the great venue here at RFK Stadium, and a festival atmosphere attracts a diverse audience of all ages."

Gutierrez handed Silverstone penalty
Esteban Gutierrez has been given a 10-place grid penalty for next month's British Grand Prix after the Sauber driver's release from the pits was adjudged to be unsafe.

During his first pit stop in Sunday's Austrian GP, his mechanics struggled to fit the right rear wheel and while the Mexican only made it approximately 20m down the pit-lane before his garage realized their error, a mandatory penalty applies.

While he was given a 10-second stop-go penalty during the race, he will now also be docked 10 positions after qualifying at Silverstone in two weeks' time.

Williams did not compromise race pace to win pole
A 3rd place for Bottas
Rob Smedley says Williams did not compromise their race pace in order to achieve pole position for Sunday's Austrian GP.

Instead of the usual Mercedes front row lock-out, this Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix will get underway with both Williams drivers on the front row.

For the first time since 2012 the team achieved a pole position when Felipe Massa crossed the line with a 1:08.759 at the Red Bull Ring. Adding to the team's joy, Valtteri Bottas brought his FW36 home in second place, 0.087s slower than his team-mate.

Smedley, Williams' head of vehicle performance, has been quick to deny that Saturday's one-lap pace could hurt the team's race pace.

Cecotto holds on for dramatic GP2 sprint win
Stefano Coletti (left- Racing Engineering), Johnny Cecotto (Center-Trident), Raffaele Marciello (Racing Engineering)
Cecotto claimed an emotional win this morning in the sprint race at Spielberg, making a blistering start to lead from lights to flag and brushing off attacks from his rivals all race long to take the top spot of the podium for Trident from the Racing Engineering pairing of Stefano Coletti and Ferrari Academy driver Raffaele Marciello.

The Venezuelan made up for yesterday's disappointments by making a storming start from P3 to mug front row starters Alexander Rossi and Mitch Evans, who were split at the first corner by the fast charging Racing Engineering drivers. Further back there was trouble for Felipe Nasr, who was caught up in an incident as the field shook itself out at turn two, and was soon back in the pits and out of the race.

Darwin victory better than Bathurst: Winterbottom
Mark Winterbottom claimed his win at the SKYCITY Triple Crown was 'better than Bathurst' citing a perfect combination of factors that extended his V8 Supercars Championship lead.

At what may be a pivotal part of the V8 Supercars' season, Winterbottom repelled the Red Bull Racing Commodore of Jamie Whincup and then a rampant Shane Van Gisbergen in the final laps.

It sounded a huge call at the time but the man they call Frosty - who had an epic closing laps battle with Whincup at last year's Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 - explained.

Nasr wins GP2 feature race in Austria
Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix), Felipe Nasr (Carlin), Raffaele Marciello (Racing Engineering)
Felipe Nasr put on a crushing display in the first ever GP2 race in Austria, leading from lights to flag as his rivals floundered in his wake to claim a famous win in the Styrian alps ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne and Raffaele Marciello in today’s feature race in Spielberg.

The victory was set up at the start when the Brazilian made a storming start as the lights went out, mugging the front row of poleman Johnny Cecotto and Jolyon Palmer to lead the field into turn one for a position he was never to relinquish: the Venezuelan was unable to maintain his pace of yesterday and was soon losing positions to Stefano Coletti and Palmer in the first few laps.

Rosberg: Hamilton spin cost me pole shot
Rosberg beating his teammate on a regular basis now
Championship leader Nico Rosberg says an error from Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton cost him a shot at pole position during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Rosberg was behind Hamilton on track during the second runs in Q3 when the Briton spun under braking for Turn 2, forcing Rosberg back off and abort his hot lap.

Rosberg went on to qualify in third position, behind the Williams pair of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas.

Pressure mounts as Hamilton spins down Austria grid
He had the dominant hand over his teammate Rosberg early in the season, but now Hamilton is choking as Rosberg steps up his game
(GMM)  The pressure is mounting on title favorite Lewis Hamilton, with even the Briton admitting his 2014 challenge could be slipping away.

After a car failure in Montreal put him 22 points behind Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, Briton Hamilton insisted he cannot afford many more strikes against him.

Going into the Austria weekend, the 2008 world champion said: "Another situation like that (Montreal) and that gap might start to get too big."

Indeed, the mountain became even steeper after qualifying, where Hamilton secured just a ninth place spot for Sunday's race.

Verstappen wins thrilling F3 race at Spa
Verstappen takes the checkered
Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing), the son of ex-Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen, scored his second season in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the 7.004 kilometers long Formula 1 circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. The 16-year-old Dutchman with residence in Belgium won the 13th season round from Lucas Auer (kfzteile24 Mucke Motorsport), the nephew of ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger. Jake Dennis (Carlin) claimed third place. Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam) remains in the lead of the drivers’ standings. The French Lotus F1 junior driver retired following a collision with Antonio Fuoco (Prema Powerteam) on the opening lap.

Max Verstappen already moved up into the lead at an early stage and didn’t lose his position after a safety car intervention. The safety car was deployed on lap six after 16-year-old Santino Ferrucci (Eurointernational), who is making his series debut this weekend, and Italian Antinio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) had collided and retired. Verstappen’s victory was only briefly in jeopardy on the final lap when Lucas Auer started an attack. Verstappen turned this off successfully and took the checkered flag ahead of his opponent from Austria.

Exploding Goodyear puts Stewart in wall at Indy
Tony Stewart was running lap speeds more than a second faster in race trim than in the past when he blew a tire during a Goodyear tire test Tuesday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver was uninjured in the accident, which came 17 laps into a 20-lap run and was the only problem during the two-day test, according to Goodyear officials.

"Tony was approaching the end of a very strong 20-lap run, with his lap times as much as a second faster than what has become the norm at Indianapolis at that point of a run," Goodyear's Director of Racing Greg Stucker said in a statement. "It appears that increased, sustained speed over that run generated a significant amount of heat, which eventually caused the right-front to go down. Those are the conditions we have to consider in making the right decisions for the race."

IndyCar Prepares for Return to Pocono
Marco Andretti after winning the pole in 2013 at Pocono
In just two weeks, the IndyCar Series makes its return to Pocono Raceway for the Pocono IndyCar 500.  This week, several drivers from the series came to test at the track.  The "Tricky Triangle" is still taunting teams, trying to configure their cars to give them the best opportunity to get in victory lane.

"This track is a phenomenal racetrack and it fits IndyCar and IndyCar style racing to a ‘T’ and it is not easy," said Ryan Hunter-Reay.

"You go to a lot of track and talk about compromise on setup.  Other ovals you go to you might have a little more under-steer off of turn 2 than you do turn 4 so you address that, but here the characteristics of the car between the two ends of the racetrack are completely opposite.  It is so, so different," said James Hinchcliffe.

Formula E reveals circuit for Punta del Este ePrix
The FIA Formula E Championship has today revealed the location and circuit layout for the Punta del Este ePrix – the host for round three of the new global electric race series on December 13 2014.

Taking place in six months from now, the Formula E series has been warmly welcomed by the city authorities including the Mayor of Punta del Este Martin Laventure, Jorge Tomassi, President of the Automobile Club of Uruguay and event organizer Fernando Caceres.

At 1.1mile (2.8km) in length and featuring 20 turns, the street circuit is located along Punta del Este’s picturesque harbor - nicknamed the Monte-Carlo of South America - just south of Maldonado and is based on the track previously used for the TC2000 touring car events. Set on a beautiful beach backdrop, the tight, twisty layout uses a mix on medium straights and sharp turns, providing a challenge for the Formula E teams and drivers.

The Champ is back.

Six-time V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup blasted his rivals off the Hidden Valley circuit at the SKYCITY Triple Crown in Darwin, sending the clearest message yet that he is far from done.

Latest on Jeff Gordon's back
Jeff Gordon
Getty Images for NASCAR
Jeff Gordon met with members of the media at Sonoma Raceway and discussed many subjects, including his back. (The full transcript can be found on our home page.)
Q) HOW IS YOUR BACK NOW? HAVE YOU HAD TO DO ANYTHING SINCE CHARLOTTE THAT YOU DON'T NORMALLY DO TO MAINTAIN IT?
Gordon: "Since that incident in Charlotte, of course I had the cortisone shots - that was the biggest difference in things that I hadn't had to do before. Then there was waiting for that to wear off to see what happens. In between that, I'm just doing a lot of ice, some TENS, the stimulation - the electric stimulation, and then my normal stretching and exercise routine that I always do. Just trying not to push it too hard. I've really gotten into bike riding this year, and was in great shape right before that happened in Charlotte. I've had to stay off the bike, but I'm looking forward to getting back on it. It feels pretty good out here. I'm happy as hard as you are braking, and all the shifting you are doing out here, I was a little concerned, but it has gone really well. The plane ride out was harder than anything, sitting there for five, six hours.
