F1 and IndyCar in severe decline since screaming engines gone
IndyCar and F1 fanbase will continue to decline unless both series return to screaming engines.
AR1 has predicted that IndyCar and F1 would suffer severe declines when switching to quiet turbo V6 engines that do not scream. We stated that knock-your-socks-off-sound was the #1 thing that keeps fans coming back for more. Well both series switched to their quiet non-screaming engines and both have been in steep decline ever since. And the decline will continue until the scream returns.  Period.  End of story.

In a separate piece, Eason opined an hour before Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix "and the paddock of the Red Bull Ring was as near to deserted as it is possible to get." Some of the huge motorhomes "looked as though they were shut for early closing."

Sonoma Raceway releases traffic management plan for Toyota Save Mart 350
SONOMA, Calif. (June 22, 2015) – Sonoma Raceway and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) today unveiled their plans to mitigate race-day traffic on area roadways during this weekend's Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.

NASCAR's annual visit to the Sonoma wine country marks one of the Bay Area's largest single-day sporting events, and the addition of racing fans to the normal wine country visitor traffic puts tremendous strain on the surrounding road systems, particularly the two-lane stretches of Highways 37 and 121.

Traffic on the surrounding roadways is expected to be most affected during the following days/times:

NASCAR releases statement about the Confederate Flag
"As we continue to mourn the tragic loss of life last week in Charleston, we join our nation's embrace of those impacted. NASCAR supports the position that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley took on the Confederate Flag on Monday. As our industry works collectively to ensure that all fans are welcome at our races, NASCAR will continue our long-standing policy to disallow the use of the Confederate Flag symbol in any official NASCAR capacity. While NASCAR recognizes that freedom of expression is an inherent right of all citizens, we will continue to strive for an inclusive environment at our events."

Mercedes test driver fastest on Day 1 in Austria
Pascal Wehrlein
Pascal Wehrlein
Day of a 2-day F1 in-season test at the Red Bull Ring began today and as expected, anyone can be fastest in the Mercedes F1 car.  Pascal Wehrlein set fast time of 1m11.005s.

Pascal Wehrlein
"It was a very mixed day! Unfortunately the weather meant that we couldn't do our full schedule. In fact, we didn't get any running at all this morning and only managed three runs on dry tires in the afternoon. But there were definitely some positives at the end. I got to try the slicks, intermediates and wets, so it was good from my perspective to be able to compare the tires and get some experience in all conditions - even if it wasn't ideal for the test program.

Interviewing the legend named Mario Andretti
Mario Andretti
Mario Andretti
The term "Icon" is thrown around far too often in sports.

To become a true icon, an individual has to boast a pedigree of historic proportions, and his notoriety and popularity has to transcend the boundaries of his profession.

Mario Gabriel Andretti easily fits the description.

Born in Italy, The Andretti family moved to The United States when Mario and his twin brother Aldo were just boys. Their family settled in Pennsylvania and quickly got involved with the sport on area dirt tracks.

Stats for the 17th overall victory for Porsche at the Le Mans 24-Hours
No. 19 Porsche
On Sunday, 14th June 2015, the trio of Earl Bamber (NZ), Nico Hulkenberg (GER) and Nick Tandy (GBR) took the 17th overall victory for Porsche at the Le Mans 24-Hours. They were followed across the line by the sister car of Timo Bernhard (GER), Brendon Hartley (NZ) and Mark Webber (AUS). This made it the fourth one-two result for the brand after achieving this in 1971, 1987 and 1998. But there are more interesting facts and figures about the race.

• The winning team completed 395 laps (5,382,82 kilometers). This year’s race was only two laps short of the longest distance covered in Le Mans back in 2010.

Why not Phoenix for IndyCar
The crowd in attendance in 2005 explains why IndyCar isn't going back to Phoenix
Question: A few years ago IndyCar took a poll asking which venue would you like to see added to the schedule and Phoenix won hands down. Why isn't Phoenix being added to the schedule? (Chris, Phoenix)

Answer: Because the numbers haven't added up. It's a similar situation at Michigan, another ISC-owned track where the last IndyCar race was an attendance fiasco. A host track needs the right combination of ticket sales, sponsorship support and sanctioning fee to make it a worthwhile venture. Obviously, those things haven't come together for some of our favorite venues. Road America is another place people want to see IndyCar race, and there is a stronger movement there for a 2016 event. As I've said before, if everyone who said they wanted to see a race at these venues had actually purchased tickets, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Keep that in mind for Milwaukee and Pocono, two places where the profit margin is tight. If you want to see racing continue there, buy a ticket to the events in July and August, respectively. By the way, IndyCar last raced at Phoenix in 2005. It last raced at Michigan and Road America in 2007. Curt Cavin/Indy Star

Hamilton not worried about Rosberg
Hamilton knows he can beat Rosberg on any given day. What he does not know is whether Mercedes will engineer a title for German driver Rosberg
Lewis Hamilton insisted he is not concerned about Nico Rosberg's form, despite his team-mate narrowing his championship lead to 10 points after victory in the Austrian Grand Prix.

"When you think about the places where points have been lost, it has been a pretty good year so far," Hamilton said.

"He has done Barcelona and here, two out of eight isn't too bad really. I'm happy with that. He has had just two strong weekends."

IndyCar Toronto TV Rating (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 The final numbers are in. The IndyCar Series racing from Toronto drew 196,000 viewers on NBCSN last Sunday afternoon, down 60% from race 2 of a doubleheader last year (484K) and down 24% from 2013 (258K). The telecast, which was dwarfed head-to-head by NASCAR on FS1 (3.5M), ranks as the least-watched IndyCar race on any network since Houston in October 2013 (161K).

The Edsel Ford was so ugly hardly anyone would buy it so Ford killed it. IndyCar needs to kill the Dallara DW12.
The 0.25 overnight turned out to be the same for the final.  That represents 196,000 viewers.  That is it......versus 1 million minimum IndyCar gets on ABC network TV.  We will say it until we are blue in the face, but IndyCar does not listen. The series is dying for three reasons:
  1. The series is invisible on NBCSN.  With one month of ABC races the series is out of the eye of the public for 11 out of 12 months a year.
  2. The engines do not scream anymore. The quiet boring engines put even the chipmunks to sleep. New fans come, they listen and they go home uninspired never to return
  3. The Dallara DW12 was the ugliest race car ever produced, that was until they slapped the current bodykits on the car and made it even uglier.

Eriksson wins Red Bull Global Rallycross Daytona II
Red Bull Olsbergs MSE driver Sebastian Eriksson took the first victory of his Red Bull Global Rallycross career in Sunday's main event at Daytona International Speedway. Eriksson, who took third place in Saturday's final, held off Ken Block and Steve Arpin for the victory.

"It's been a great weekend for us," said Eriksson, who also took the Red Bull GRC points lead by eight points over Block. "We struggled a little bit yesterday with the setup of the car—we didn't have the pace to close on the fastest guys, but we solved that for today. I won my heat and my semifinal, and we got away in the start of the final so we could get a little bit of a gap on Ken and the other guys. And I guess I could do my own race and this time, it was enough."

Foust wins Saturday Daytona GRC race
Tanner Foust
Two-time Red Bull Global Rallycross champion Tanner Foust overcame mechanical issues on Friday to score the victory in Saturday's Red Bull GRC main event at Daytona International Speedway. Foust beat Bryan Herta Rallysport's Austin Dyne and Red Bull Olsbergs MSE's Sebastian Eriksson, who finished in second and third place, respectively, in the initial leg of the weekend doubleheader.

"It's been an amazing development process," said Foust, who gave the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle its first win in a points-paying Red Bull GRC event. "It's unbelievable how committed Volkswagen are to engineering perfection. Combine that with Andretti, and a lot of people have put a lot of work into these cars. To get on the top of the podium so soon, and to be so good in the points with both cars so soon, is great."

Honda not ready for second F1 team
Honda needs to get its act together before it sells one of its engines to another team
(GMM)  Honda has backed away from speculation it is ready to supply a second team with engines in 2016.

The Japanese carmaker has said consistently since returning to the sport that while this year will be spent focused on works partner McLaren, it is open to selling the same turbo V6 to paying customers from 2016.

Manor, currently powered by last year's Ferrari power unit, had indicated it was open to a change.

But as the works McLaren-Honda collaboration continued to stutter in Austria, Honda's F1 boss Yasuhisa Arai said: "I still think it is a good idea to supply more teams with engines, but the truth is that there is no such plan.

Jenson Button's 25-place penalty is further evidence that Formula One is disappearing up its own exhaust pipe
Button proves F1's insanity
A combination of arcane rules and Honda's spluttering engines have produced two of the most absurd punishments ever handed out in Formula One.

McLaren-Honda's two drivers, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, will both start the Austrian Grand Prix with 25-place grid penalties, even though there are only 20 cars taking part.

They are being punished for engine changes. But it is not as simple as that. The FIA handed out a sheet 'explaining' the decision in language that went beyond jargon into impenetrable technical gobbledegook.

Wolff admits Mercedes domination not good for F1
Toto Wolff smiles as Mercedes decimates F1 field yet again
(GMM)  Toto Wolff has admitted Mercedes' continuing dominance of formula one is not good for "the show".

From left, Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix), Rio Haryanto (Campos Racing), Nobuharu Matsushita (ART Grand Prix)
Rio Haryanto has claimed his second win of the season in this morning's sprint race in Spielberg with a drive of skill, speed and cunning to defy series leader Stoffel Vandoorne and Nobuharu Matsushita despite driving with a broken front wing for the second half of the race.

The Indonesian driver started as he meant to go on, making a great getaway as the lights went out to out drag poleman Nick Yelloly on the inside line into turn one. Alexander Rossi tried to go to the outside but three into one didn't fit: the American and the Briton collided, Rossi dropped back but continued, but Yelloly's race was run.
