Auto GP series is toast
The open wheel racing mental midgets around the world cannot figure out that there are too many series, and they are eating each other's lunch. Eventually the sport will collapse from its own stupidity | Auto GP organizers have confirmed they will suspend the 2015 season, starting with this weekend’s Paul Ricard round, due to the low number of entries.
Although the 2014 season ended with 10 cars, the new season kicked off at the Hungaroring with one less participant despite the category joining forces with the FA1 series over the winter.
The size of the grid was reduced even more in the second round at Silverstone as Johnny Cecotto and Leonardo Pulcini both discontinued their participation. Read more & Comment...

Austrian F1 GP TV Rating (Update) UPDATE In the USA NBCSN's live telecast of the Austrian GP earned a miniscule 0.37 rating, with an average audience of 525,000 viewers. No USA drivers in a winning car so Americans have little interest. Ferrari would be wise to put Alexander Rossi in place of Raikkonen instead of Bottas. What is more important to F1 and it manufacturers and sponsors, Finland or the USA?
06/23/15 German free-to-air TV channel RTL "recorded nearly 5 million viewers for its broadcast of the Austrian F1 Grand Prix on Sunday," according to the SID. An average of 4.81 million viewers tuned in to watch Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg celebrate his third victory of the season. RTL obtained a market share of 32.7% for its race coverage, which started at 2pm (SID, 6/22).
DWDL's Alexander Krei reported German pay-TV operator Sky drew a record 440,000 viewers for its broadcast of the race, the channel's best viewership of the season. The number translated into a market share of 3.3% in the target demographic 14-49. DWDL

Alex Fontana gets Trulli call-up Alex Fontana will replace Vitantonio Liuzzi at Trulli for the Visa London ePrix at Battersea Park this weekend.

Odds to win the MAVTV 500
 |
Your 2014 MAVTV 500 podium | Below, are odds to win this weekend's MAVTV 500 courtesy of Bovada Sportsbook.
As you would expect, the betting favorites come from the Penske and Ganassi stables, led by 2013 Fontana winner Will Power. In both of the previous 2015 oval races, the Penske and Ganassi teams swept the top-four finishing positions, and led an overwhelming percentage of the laps. No reason the 4 Penskes along with the top-two Ganassi cars (Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan) shouldn't be the favorites.

MotoGP: 1-2 for Pedrosa and Marquez
 |
Dani Pedrosa | Fresh from his podium finish in Catalunya, Dani Pedrosa was immediately fast out of the box in this morning’s FP1 session – which he led for the majority – ending up third fastest with his time of 1’34.570 (lap 19/19). Dani did an exhaust comparison today and worked on various setups on his Honda RC213V machine, improving his time in the afternoon by over a second with his record breaking lap of 1’33.450 (lap 18/20), beating Casey Stoner’s record pole lap in 2012 of 1’33.713.
Despite a small crash on his out lap this morning (turn thirteen), Marc Marquez was able to press the reset button and continue his work as normal aboard the 2014 specification chassis – with updated 2015 swing arm and exhaust. This afternoon, Marc also improved significantly from FP1 (1’34.552 lap 17/20) with his time of 1’33.589 also under Casey’s time, finishing second behind teammate Dani.

Ed Carpenter looks to turn California dreams into reality
 |
Ed Carpenter | To borrow from the 1966 hit song by the Mama's and the Papa's, Ed Carpenter has been spending a lot of California Dreamin' lately – of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
Carpenter has made just two starts thus far this season, both on oval tracks. Unfortunately, mishaps caused him to fail to finish both races.
He crashed in last month's Indianapolis 500 and finished 30th in the 33-car field.
Then earlier this month at Texas, the Indianapolis native suffered engine problems and finished 22nd. Read more & Comment...

NASCAR Technical Institute prepares for Chrysler partnership Though Mooresville's for-profit technical institute bears the name NASCAR, only about 20 percent of its graduates go on to work in racing. Most head to careers as auto technicians at car dealerships. Because of a new partnership forged between the school's parent company, Universal Technical Institute, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, students at the Mooresville campus will now be able to take part in specialized training from all three of America's major auto manufacturers. "It gives students confidence that major manufacturers are investing in our program," NASCAR Technical Institute President Jennifer Bergeron said in an interview.

Scott Dixon Teleconference
 | Scott Dixon | Verizon IndyCar Series driver Scott Dixon was the guest on the INDYCAR media teleconference to discuss this weekend's MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway. Q. What are your thoughts on the season so far? You're third in points, but you are a little bit behind the Penske duo of Juan Pablo Montoya and Will Power. You're usually strong in the second half. Heading to Fontana, do you think you are in position to contend for another series title? SCOTT DIXON: Yeah, you hope so. I think with how the season's gone, the No. 9 Target car has been strong in just about every scenario. We've had some pretty sore races I think with St. Pete, the mechanical issue there with the airjacks. Then New Orleans was kind of the non-race there. Toronto was a bit of a bummer, I think, with strategy and just how we ended up there. I think we could have capitalized on a good points-ending day there.

Austria test Day 2 - Mercedes continues to dominate
 |
Rosberg smiling at Mercedes' sheer dominance | Nico Rosberg Monday and Tuesday were two long days waiting for better weather, so today was important as there are only four test days during the season now. Luckily, the track was consistent and we could try a lot of different things. We had a gearbox issue just before lunch but luckily it didn't really cost us any time as we could work on it during the break and the guys did a great job to get me back out there so quick, so thank you to them for that. It was an intense program but we got through everything and learned a lot. We started with was some aero work then spent time looking at tires and a few mechanical things like spring settings. We also ran a stiff setup in preparation for Silverstone, which will be useful for next week. The car felt good with that so I'm sure we will be strong at the next race. It's a very fast track and you have to drive it very hard. But that sort of content - high-speed corners needing good downforce - is a specialty of this car, so I'm feeling confident.

Versatility key to becoming Verizon IndyCar Series champion
 |
The greatest IndyCar drivers - like Mario Andretti - won in NASCAR, F1 and Sportscars. That is what AR1 calls a truly great versatile driver. Juan Montoya fits that bill today. | There is not a more versatile racing series in the world than the Verizon IndyCar Series, and that’s been a trademark of American open-wheel racing for some time.
On Saturday, Auto Club Speedway will host the fourth MAV TV 500 on the fastest track in the series. It'll be the third oval race this season, following the Indianapolis 500 and the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway. Of the remaining five events on the schedule, three will be on ovals.
There have been 10 IndyCar races leading to Fontana, the majority of them on street courses (St. Petersburg, Long Beach, two in Detroit and Toronto).
No other series comes close to the variety of competitive venues. NASCAR does vary from its usual oval stock car races for a pair of Sprint Cup road races, but no other discipline ventures from its traditional roots. Read more & Comment...
