Time for the creation of CART-II
After watching the greatest race in the history of IndyCar Racing at Fontana Saturday, with less than 5,000 people in attendance, it's clear the Hulman-George family is running the sport into the ground. It's time for the team owners to re-unite and take back control of the series to save it from the failure by the group on 16th and Georgetown to market some of the greatest racing on this planet.

Gurney's White Paper Articulated for the Need for the Creation of CART - Now it's time for CART-II as many of the same arguments hold true again

While team owners Roger Penske and U.E.'Pat' Patrick are regarded as being the founding fathers of Championship Auto Racing Teams, the genesis of CART actually began in early 1978 when team owner Dan Gurney composed a white paper and sent it to all the owners.

Video: Miller unloads on Mark Miles
The RACER Channel's Robin Miller unloads on an empty house at Auto Club Speedway and the scheduling decisions presided over by IndyCar boss Mark Miles. While we don't agree with Miller about the series ending on Labor Day as long as the first race is end of January, making it an 8+ month long season, we do think the owners need to start a new CART series because the Hulman-George family are running the series right into the ground. TV ratings are down, the crowd in Fontana was only 3,000 according to Miller, and the purse size isn't much more than a Saturday Night dirt track race.

NASCAR Sonoma afternoon report
With Coors Light Pole Qualifying the only NASCAR Sprint Cup Series session, it’s been something of a quiet day. I spent a fair amount of time in the garage area after qualifying as the teams converted their cars from qualifying to race setups.

One of the major discussion points here this weekend has been the aero package to be run at Kentucky. Paul Wolfe, crew chief of the #2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford driver by Brad Keselowski, was nice enough to spend a few minutes sharing his thoughts on the matter with me.

Wet Track Cancels Qualifying At Watkins Glen
Qualifying for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen was cancelled Saturday afternoon because of wet conditions. In fact, after the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race concluded under caution about 3 p.m., all on-track activity for the rest of Saturday was cancelled, including a Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race, and a Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge race.

See our photos here.

So the lineup for Saturday's TUDOR Championship race will be set by points, which was a major disappointment to the Honda-powered No. 60 Michel Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian Ligier JS P2. The team had practiced at Watkins Glen in preparation for the race, and it showed in practice, when driver Ozz Negri was the fastest overall.

IndyCar mid-race report from Fontana
The crowd during the red-flag with 5 laps to go.  Too bad the attendance was pathetic
Lucille Dust/AR1.com
We are approaching lap 125 and we have just gotten our first yellow for Helio Castroneves, the guy leading the most laps in this race.  We have had 43 lead changes, the most ever in an IndyCar race.  Perhaps the best race IndyCar ever put on and hardly anyone is here to watch it. Maybe 5,000 in attendance.

Graham Rahal has been really improving his position today.  Ryan Briscoe has been running in the front also today until he had to replace his back wing just now.  And Team Penske has been having fantastic pits stops for Will Power, who is in the lead now.

Statement from Brian France
Daytona Beach, FL - "NASCAR will maintain its long-standing policy preventing the use of the Confederate Flag in any official position at our events. In all areas that NASCAR controls on a given race weekend, the flag has no presence.

"We have been clear in support if this position throughout our industry and to those across the country who have called for the eradication of the Confederate Flag. We be as aggressive as possible to disassociate NASCAR events from an offensive and divisive symbol. We are working with the industry to achieve that goal."

Saturday morning update from Fontana (update) UPDATE A few clouds have moved in over Auto Club Speedway a couple of hours ahead of today's MAVTV 500. We're not sure exactly how long they will last or what effect it will have on the today's race. However, it is for now at least, not as oppressively hot here in Fontana.

We'll keep you updated throughout the day.

We should see some close racing like this today
Happy race day from sunny Fontana, California.  It is a pleasant morning at 68 degrees but will be 93 by race time.

The starting grid for today's race has Chevy in 8 of the top 10 positions and 4 of those Drivers are Team Penske and 3 drivers are racing for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Juan  Montoya, the points leader, will be starting 5th today and stated yesterday that he thought the race today will be pack racing due to the new aero kit.  His teammate, Helio Castroneves thinks just the first 20 laps of the race we will see the cars all packed up.  And then the tires will start to fall off.  Marco Andretti, the quickest Honda starting 3rd today, says the tire degradation will affect the outcome of the race, but not as bad as in Texas.  He feels good about his car and says the race will be fun.

97,000 fans basking in the sunshine at the legendary TT Circuit Assen were treated to one of the greatest MotoGP battles ever witnessed as the nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi managed to hold off Marc Marquez in a dramatic end to the race to take his 111th GP victory and extend his championship lead.

Marquez made a move on Rossi as the duo entered the final chicane on the very last lap and made contact with the Italian, forcing Rossi to run straight on through the gravel. Rossi managed to stay upright though and went on to take the checkered flag 1.242s ahead of Marquez, claiming his third win of the season and first from pole position since Misano in 2009.

Morning update from Sonoma
It’s an overcast mid-60 degree morning here at Sonoma Raceway. As I stare out from the media center overlooking the pit straight, Sonoma Raceway president and general manager Steve Page is introducing five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon, who is about to host a Q & A session with fans.

Talking to some of the locals, the cloud cover is expected to burn off shortly. Sunshine and temperatures in the high 70s are expected for today.

If you've ever been to Sonoma Raceway or just even Sonoma County you don't need me to tell you of the romantic rolling hillside landscape and picturesque vineyards as far as the eye can see. Sonoma County is home to around 250 wineries and an estimated 1100 growers of wine.

"We've been waiting to see where the aero kits are going, to see what IndyCar's vision is," Steve Eriksen, HPD's vice president and chief operating officer told The Star today at Auto Club Speedway. "This gives us something to look at."

Afternoon update from Fontana UPDATE We caught up with Scott Dixon after he placed the #9 Degree Chevrolet atop the time sheets in practice 2. He said the team changed his engine today and he had his race setup for downforce on the car in this practice. Still, he's unsure of his chances in qualifying and the race.

"The speeds are good but you can never get into a rhythm in practice to see how well you are doing in comparison with the other cars."

Verizon P1 qualifying is scheduled to start in about an hour and a half. Should be an interesting session.

Noon update from Fontana
After the first IndyCar practice, you see Honda in positions 1 and 2 on the speed charts.  Could this be the weekend The Hondas excel over the Chevrolets?

There has been a change to pit entry for this weekend.  The reason for this change is that at Texas Motor Speedway several cars went too fast on pit in off Turn 3 and crossed the apron back onto the racetrack.  So this weekend pit entry will be off Turn 4.  There is a dashed white line and cones at pit in to indicate where the drivers can emerge from the track onto pit lane.

Record-breaking Rossi claims sensational pole position in Assen
Movistar Yamaha's Rossi silenced the doubters by smashing Casey Stoner’s previous pole record from 2012 by over a second to claim his 61st career pole position. The nine-time World Champion set a 1'32.627, the fastest ever time on a motorbike around the 4.5km track.

With the sun breaking through the crowds and track temperatures reaching 38°C the scene was set for an epic Q2 at the legendary TT Circuit Assen, and the fans in the packed grandstands were not left disappointed. Rossi, who freely admits his qualifying performances have been his weakest link during a Grand Prix weekend, answered the critics in the best way possible to take his 51st premier-class pole position at the Motul TT Assen. The Italian had earlier finished on top of the combined timesheets after FP3 for the first time since the new two-tiered qualifying system came into place in 2013.

What Kyle Busch needs to do to make Chase
Kyle Busch
Kyle Busch
Heading into Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, #18-Kyle Busch is 39th in points, 173 points behind 30th-place #51-Justin Allgaier. If Allgaier keeps accumulating points at his current rate, he'll have roughly 435 points when the regular-season ends. That, in turn, means that to catch Allgaier, Busch will have to average a 12th-place finish in the next 11 races.

Considering that in the four races Busch has run since returning from a compound fracture of the lower right leg and a midfoot fracture of the left foot, his average finish is 24.75, it's safe to say Busch has his work cut out for him. Plus Busch has to win a race. FoxSports

Video: The sound and speed of IndyCars when the sport was big (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 The largest attendance for an IndyCar race at Fontana was in 1999 under the CART banner when over 100,000 showed up. 2000 was still good, and in fact in Mexico City CART race drew 300,000 that year.  But by 2001 and 2002 the destruction of the sport, started by Tony George in 1996 when the IRL started, began to take effect.  George took CART's biggest race away from them, the Indy 500, and eventually some CART teams were paid off to join the IRL.  It was the end of the greatest era in IndyCar Racing.

06/25/15 Below are photos from the 2000 Marlboro 500 CART IndyCar event.  Note the size of the CART IndyCar crowd. Those in the IndyCar paddock who helped destroy CART, and you all know who you are, note the size of the crowd at Fontana this coming weekend and you will understand that you are responsible for the sad state IndyCar Racing is in today. Instead of working to build CART to be larger than F1, you tore it down and destroyed IndyCar Racing - you cut your own throat and the throat of all the fans who used to love the sport.
