IMS will bend over backwards for Tony Stewart, who like Jeff Gordon, thumbed his nose at IndyCar and went to NASCAR
Tony Stewart, who is retiring from NASCAR at season’s end, will receive a going-away gift from Indianapolis Motor Speedway next week that will encourage him to return.

IMS is giving Stewart a dirt track inside Turn 3.

Yes, that Turn 3.

The plan, IMS president Doug Boles said Tuesday, is to install a 3/16th-mile oval for Stewart’s media appearance July 5. Several teams that own dirt midgets have been invited for what amounts to an exhibition. It stands to reason Stewart will take anyone’s offer to take a spin around the new oval, and he might even be the first to do so.

Stewart was told of the plan last weekend, Boles said.

But, on the day of the press conference, team owner Roger Penske added one more race to it, the Kohler Grand Prix in Road America. The reason for that is Menards is based out of Wisconsin and that’s John Menard’s home state. Adding that race was big for the entire company.

The crew were guests at a pro Volleyball event and they parked on a main road next to plenty of people. When they returned to their vehicle after the event, a window was busted and bags were taken. Most of the guys had their cell phones and wallets on them but plenty of valuables were gone.

One crew member said, “They got everything they could grab without opening the doors. Its seemed to be a smash and grab type of robbery.” We did ask about hard cards and were told only one hard card was stolen during the ordeal. pittalks.com

In the state budget passed earlier this month, Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers eliminated $500 million originally proposed for the subsidy program and other low-emissions initiatives – the result of a political impasse.

Without the funds, the electric-car subsidy, which has helped Californians purchase 150,000 low- and zero-emission cars since 2009, has hit a roadblock. Thousands of consumers applying for the incentive each month now are pushed to a waiting list.

Stewart's battered car after he and Hamlin went at it

Denny Hamlin (second) was the top-finishing Toyota in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway to claim his career-best finish at the 11-turn road course, Hamlin talked to the media after the race, part of the transcript:

Q) What was the last lap like from your vantage point?
Hamlin: "Tony (Stewart) was doing a good job maintaining his tires, a good job of running consistent laps there. Really he gave me an opportunity to get close. On the second to last lap he wheel hopped into (turn) seven, allowed us to get close and I just did a poor job of getting through 11. I was expecting to really drive in deep and I really thought that was going to happen and he did, but I also left the bottom open and that was a bad mistake on my part. Still a great race. I was proud of the FedEx Cares Toyota team for giving me a car that could win. We'll take this and go with it."

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A. and the Northern California Toyota Dealers have signed a multi-year agreement to continue as co-title sponsor of the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway, officials announced today.

Toyota, which celebrates its 10th year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2016, has served as co-title sponsor of the Toyota/Save Mart 350, as well as the raceway’s official vehicle, since 2007. The three-year extension will mark 13 years of sponsorship with Sonoma Raceway, making Toyota one of the facility’s longest-running sponsors. Toyota also signed on as title sponsor of the raceway’s NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing event, the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals (July 29-31), this year.

Audi has another DTM winner: youngster Nico Muller (24) won a turbulent DTM race at the Norisring on Sunday, causing Audi to triumph twice within the space of 24 hours in its “home round” in Nuremberg.

Following “Forza Italia” with Edoardo Mortara’s victory on Saturday, it was “Hopp, Schwiiz!” on Sunday. In his 36th DTM race, the youngest Audi factory driver celebrated his first ever victory in the DTM. In front of an impressive crowd of 123,500 spectators (throughout the weekend), the Swiss at the wheel of his Playboy Audi RS 5 DTM delivered an impeccable performance on Sunday. Having started the race from grid position three, he improved to second place right in turn one. Subsequently, Muller put pressure on pole sitter Tom Blomqvist and overtook the BMW also thanks to a quicker pit stop. In the final stage, Muller controlled the pace and kept his cool even when a safety car period shortly before the finish ruined his advantage of 2.5 seconds.

Urrutia wins wet Indy Lights race
The premier level of the Mazda Road to Indy provided plenty of excitement this morning as Uruguayan Santiago Urrutia, last year’s winner of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, made light of treacherous conditions at Elkhart Lake’s scenic Road America circuit to claim his second Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race victory for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian.

Brazilian teammate Andre Negrao secured his best finish to date in second, while yesterday’s winner Zach Veach completed a fine weekend by taking third for Belardi Auto Racing.

Sunday morning update from Road America (2nd Update)
UPDATE The rain has just about stopped. We now have an 8:20 am central time start for warmups and the session has been shortened from 30 min. to 20 min. Given the radar map shows the rain will stop 2 hours before the race time, and hence we will have a dry race, why risk crashing the car on a wet track in warmups?  If we are a team manager we are skipping morning warmup.  We shall see what transpires. Mark C. reporting from Road America.

06/26/16  We are on hold waiting for the arrival of the medical helicopter. The ceiling is too low for the helicopter to fly right now, so perhaps we won't have a warm-up session until just before the race, and hopefully after the track dries....if it dries. Mark C. reporting from a very wet Road America

Kurt Busch plans to compete in Gulf 12 Hours
Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch's next challenge could come this December in the Gulf 12 Hours - possibly alongside MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo in a GT car. Busch, who has dabbled in IndyCar and dragsters, now has his eyes set on sports cars - but more importantly the Yas Marina Circuit, site of the Formula 1 finale. Following his trip to Baku for the European Grand Prix, Busch jetted to Abu Dhabi where he tested a F3000 car at the Yas Marina on Tuesday. Last year's podium in the Gulf 12 Hours featured a Ferrari 458, Mercedes SLS and an Aston Martin Vantage. But Busch's objective was to simply get a feel for the circuit. "It would be like a Pirelli World Challenge Series-type car," Busch said.

Video: Townley and Gallagher Brawl After Truck Series Crash
Saturday night's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race looked more like a Saturday night late-model race at the local dirt track, after truck series drivers Jon Wes Townley and Spencer Gallagher ended their eventful night with an on-track brawl after crashing out of the Drivin' For Linemen 200 at Gateway Motorsports Park

Following their second on-track incident of the night on lap 155, Gallagher and Townley exited their disabled trucks in turn one before Townley tackled Gallagher, sending both falling to the pavement. The two then grappled near the apron of the racetrack with Townley delivering a WWE-style takedown on Gallagher. The two then got back to their feet and exchanged a few punches before a NASCAR official finally stepped in to break up the fight.
