Russell handed Austrian grid penalty for Kvyat incident
George Russell
George Russell. Between qualifying grid penalties and power unit change grid penalties, is there anyone on the grid that didn't get a penalty?

Williams' George Russell has been handed a three-place grid penalty for "unnecessarily impeding" Daniil Kvyat during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Kvyat was on a flying lap when he entered Turn 9 and came up on a slow moving Russell, forcing him to run wide. The Toro Rosso driver failed to escape Q1 as a result.

Russell admitted after the session that he was unaware of Kvyat's position and wasn't informed by his team that the Russian was approaching, nor that he was on a flying lap.

Brit Dan Ticktum sacked

UPDATE Christian Horner elaborated on why the decision was made to axe Ticktum.

“It’s a scheme that is results based and he’s had a tough time in Japan and it wasn’t working out,” Horner told Sky Sports F1.

“He was a member of the junior team and it was decided that he wasn’t the right guy moving forward as an option for either us or Toro Rosso, therefore the sums were called.

“He was given the shot, he was given the opportunity. It’s up to these guys to grab that with both hands.”

That this is the first Ferrari 312T offered at auction is of little surprise – just five chassis were built for Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni for the 1975 Formula 1 season.

Juri Vips
Juri Vips

Juri Vips achieved his first FIA Formula 3 win in style in today’s Race 1 at the Red Bull Ring, leaping two positions from third to become the first non-PREMA winner of the campaign. The Hitech Grand Prix racer finished ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Max Fewtrell and PREMA Racing’s Marcus Armstrong, muscling his way past the both of them in the early stages.

The Estonian overcame a frantic start and clung onto P3 despite an initial overtake attempt from Jehan Daruvala when the lights went out. Armstrong also came under threat at the start and initially lost first to Fewtrell who was quick off the line from P2. The Brit dashed in-front of the Kiwi and took the racing line, but Armstrong fought back and reclaimed the position down the inside of Turn 2.

Hulkenberg is on his 5th Power Unit already as Renault scrambles to catch the big boys
Nico Hulkenberg will move on par in terms of power output with Renault team mate Daniel Ricciardo after the French manufacturer opted to give him their engine upgrade ahead of final practice for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo was the first to run the unit in France, but as Hulkenberg was on the brink of penalties, the German didn't take the new engine - and thus the penalties - because it was their home race.

On Friday morning, Renault confirmed Hulkenberg would run his fifth internal combustion engine (ICE) – at what is the ninth race of the season – in Austria, which means a five-place grid penalty.

Brett Moffitt won for the second time in three races, capturing Friday night’s Camping World 225 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.

But about an hour after the checkered flag, Chastain’s truck was found to be too low in post-race inspection, prompting NASCAR to take the win away from him and give it to Moffitt instead.

NASCAR President Doesn't See Massive Changes For '21 Schedules
Steve Phelps
Steve Phelps
NASCAR President Steve Phelps on Friday said that he "doesn’t foresee 'massive, wholesale changes'" to the '21 schedule.

NASCAR has already announced a shakeup of the '20 schedule, which saw "significant movement of dates on the calendar."

Those changes appeared to only "embolden those who want even more drastic changes" in '21, when five-year sanctioning events with current tracks "will expire."

Phelps’ comments on Friday "seemed to temper that idea." Phelps said NASCAR still plans to "listen to what the fans have to say" as its future schedules are created MOTORSPORT.com

Nyck De Vries

Nyck De Vries pulled off a qualifying masterclass to seal pole position with time to spare in Spielberg, stretching his Championship lead by four points. He finished ahead of rookie duo Anthoine Hubert and Gunayu Zhou. The BWT Arden ace saw a gamble pay off where he set his best laptime when the rest of the field returned for fresh tires.

Sergio Sette Camara and Mick Schumacher were the early time setters on an ever-warming Red Bull Ring circuit. The Brazilian’s time on top didn’t last long and he was soon knocked down the ladder by De Vries. The Championship leader’s time of 1:14.233 was the hottest of a flurry of scorching fast laps, putting him ahead of Luca Ghiotto and his main Championship rival Nicholas Latifi.

F1 teams vote to stick with 2019 Pirelli tires

Wolff and Mercedes get their way again, ensuring Mercedes will win every race in 2019

The F1 team bosses, together with some drivers, met with the FIA and Pirelli ahead of this morning's opening session as a number of teams sought to have the Italian manufacturer revert to the 2018-spec thicker treaded tires.

The move follows the failure of a number of teams to get their thinner treaded tires into the correct operating window, which in turn has caused them to blame almost all their misfortune this year on the tires.

One team that has got the tires to work correctly is Mercedes, and understandably the German team was against the move back to the 2018-spec tires which would have required the support of seven teams.
